[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 746826] Re: [i915gm] GPU lockup ESR: 0x00000001 IPEHR: 0x7d8e0001

2011-04-01 Thread Bryce Harrington
These gpu lockup bugs typically involve your computer freezing (except
sometimes the mouse cursor moves), with a blank screen or the screen no
longer painting or responding to clicks. Only way to recover is to
power cycle your computer.

Do you ever notice problems such as that? From the log message it
appears you did experience that at one time.

(Reason I ask is we sometimes get false positives with the capture
tool.)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 745308] Re: [arrandale] GPU lockup (ESR: 0x00000001 IPEHR: 0x05000000)

2011-04-01 Thread Bryce Harrington
I think this lockup bug was likely due to the older mesa that was
present in ia32-libs.

Version 20090808ubuntu11 was just recently added to natty a day ago;
it's possible at the time your system locked up that you had the older
version of ia32-libs with the broken mesa.

Have you had any system lockups since you upgraded to this version of
ia32-libs? If not, then please see if you can reproduce the lockup
again with this ia32-libs, and give it a few days to recur.

This doesn't sound like an X bug. Instead it sounds like the indicator
icons haven't been found properly.

Moving to the relevant icon theme, but they'll need more details in
order to do anything useful with this.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 730476] Re: Part of the time appears cut off when displaying the day of the week and date

2011-04-01 Thread Karl Lattimer
unity 2d uses the gnome panel as well I believe, and it's indicator-
applet-complete or indicator-applet there are a few packages for various
indicator bits in the gnome panel.

I've investigated this bug a bit, and there's a guide being set in
indicator-datetime and that guide is adequate as it works for unity3d,
so I took a poke at the indicator-applet-complete and couldn't find
anything that may particularly limit it.

I imagine there's some calculation going wrong somewhere down the line
and it'll be in indicator-applet somewhere.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 747069] [NEW] [natty beta-1] Screen flashes on and of every few seconds with nouveau driver

2011-04-01 Thread Peter Belew
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-nouveau

I tried booting the Natty 11.04 beta-1 live cd (32-bit) on a compaq
presario with an nVidia chipset. The system took a long time to boot,
possibly because of fairly low RAM and possibly because the hard disk is
currently only formatted with a FreeBSD partition so that no swap space
is available. However, the bug I'm reporting is that once the system
logs in to a Gnome screen, the screen blanks for a second or so every
few seconds. Looking at Xorg.0.log (in attached bug.tgz file) it looks
like noveau and vesa drivers are loaded, along with various other
drivers including frame buffer drivers.

I previously had Fedora 14 installed, which displayed the same problem
with the default nvidia driver, but worked ok at the Samsung SyncMaster
570S panel's max 1024x768 resolution using a vesa driver. Likewise on
FreeBSD a vesa driver works better than the nv driver (which has another
resolution problem).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 706890] Re: dual monitors garbled display on 10.10 with Radeon X600

2011-04-01 Thread samo_nz
I have the same set up with the same symptoms, however there is a
workaround - Bob, when you enable dual monitors log out and back in
again and it should be ok, you will need to add a logout button to the
panel away from the garbled mess:)

This works but if enabling desktop effects under appearance, the display
gets messed up as described above and a log out and back in again
somehow reverts it back to no effects

After installed today's updated for natty my X crashes and starts over
with the login screen immediately after I touch my touchpad :( It's this
bug, or I have to report it separately? If it is, why it's only High I
can't use my note without an external mouse :(

2011-04-01 Thread Teej
For something which you think is a different problem, or *is* a
different problem or hardware, *always* file another bug report. Better
to have 100 bug reports separated than 100 problems in 1 report.

It looks like the upstream bug report has stagnated, do they need
reporting back on the test case, or just forgot about it?

This happened on the first boot after upgrading to Natty
GPU signature is similar to bug 721086

I filed this by manually running /usr/share/apport/apport-gpu-error-

was actually hung or not.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 730476] Re: Part of the time appears cut off when displaying the day of the week and date

2011-04-01 Thread Karl Lattimer
Digging deeper into indicator-applet it appears this code just responds
to the size request that the indicator makes, which should be perfectly
ample.

I doubt there is a way to detect indicator side if you're unity2d or
unity3d particularly easily, and even then I wouldn't really want to
special case the size stuff for one over the other.

The effected code appears to be in indicator-datetime.c,
guess_label_size.

I'll poke at this particular function and test some things and see what
kinds of results I get.

There is a lot of noise in CurrentDmesg.txt because rtl8192 is spamming
the kernel log, but this is the first abnormal drm message:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 730476] Re: Part of the time appears cut off when displaying the day of the week and date

2011-04-01 Thread Karl Lattimer
I think it's possible that the indicator might be calculating the size
with the incorrect style, that style may be valid for unity3d but not
for unity2d. The style would change after it has been packed into the
container.

This might be quite difficult to fix.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 747126] Re: X crashes on first touchpad touch

2011-04-01 Thread John S. Gruber
Work-around:
If, like me, you have difficulty not touching the touchad while you type, you
can use xinput to disable it:

xinput --list

and find the id of the touchpad. Say it is 12:

xinput  set-prop 12 Device Enabled 0

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 747338] [NEW] LiveCD should have a safe graphics option

2011-04-01 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Especially on nVidia cards, the default nouveau driver may not work and
the user would have to add a nouveau fake parameter at boot options in
order to crash the driver. It would be much better, especially for
unexperienced Ubuntu users, to have an easy option to boot with safe
graphics. For instance I filled the nouveau bug #564572 on april 2010
and it hasn't been fixed. A new Ubuntu user would probably just give up
because it doesn't work. The live session should either have a safe
graphics or an automatic blacklist of nouveau for a certain graphic
cards that have known critical bugs.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 709505] Re: [MASTER] fglrx failed to install/upgrade due to being incompatible with 2.6.38 kernel

2011-04-01 Thread Alberto Milone
@Anton
The links that you created (e.g. libGL.so - /usr/lib/fglrx/libGL.so) are not
necessary. ldconfig should find libGL anyway on a clean system.

@Christopher
I can't guarantee that Natty will work correctly on your computer. It's still
in Beta 1.

@dart
Please file a separate bug report about your problem

@EricDHH
You can remove nvidia with:
sudo apt-get remove --purge nvidia-current

Also, next time please put the output of commands in a text file and
attach it to the bug report (using the Add attachment or patch button)
instead of copying and pasting things in the bug report.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 747405] [NEW] Black Screen, Flickers and Visual Tearing

2011-04-01 Thread dart
Public bug reported:

After unity 3.8.2 (already past rev. 1039 that have workaround for
fglrx) update and installation of new fglrx from jockey, i am getting
black screen, flickers and tearing in unity that makes it unusable. Some
screenshots :

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fglrx-installer/+bug/709505/+attachment/1963679/+files/Screenshot.png

How do I submit logs? Unity is unusable. Logs from classic desktop
session will do?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 649809] Re: the session settings manager can try starting before the login screen one exits

2011-04-01 Thread Rodrigo Moya
mb21, I assume you are really running the package with the patch
applied, right? Can you double-check? If so, can you please run:

# echo sleep 5  /etc/X11/Xsession.d/50slowdownthere

as root and see if that fixes the problem? If so, maybe we would need a
bigger number of retries for very slow machines (like a virtual
machine), but this is confusing, since the problem was really on fast
machines.

have 1.3.99+git20110116.0e27ce3a-0ubuntu9. there should be a release

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 649809] Re: the session settings manager can try starting before the login screen one exits

2011-04-01 Thread The Compiler
Still not fixed for me either.

Latest beta, i7 640-LM, OCZ Vertex 2 SSD.

My session is a bit special, I don't start a normal gnome. It looks like
this:

florian@hermione ~ % cat /usr/share/xsessions/compiler.desktop
[Desktop Entry]
Name=Compiler
Comment=AWN and compiz
Exec=gnome-session --session=compiler
TryExec=gnome-session
Icon=
Type=Application
X-Ubuntu-Gettext-Domain=gnome-session-2.0

florian@hermione ~ % cat /usr/share/gnome-session/sessions/compiler.session
[GNOME Session]
Name=Ubuntu
Required=windowmanager;panel;
Required-windowmanager=compiz
Required-panel=avant-window-navigator
DefaultApps=gnome-settings-daemon;

mb21, anything like this applies to you as well?

Also, when I'm in the session, I cannot kill the original gnome-settings-daemon
with a SIGTERM, only a SIGKILL seems to do something...
Also, for some reason, it does not happen when I use a self-baked zen kernel.

Florian

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 649809] Re: the session settings manager can try starting before the login screen one exits

2011-04-01 Thread The Compiler
Rodrigo, for me, the sleep-workaround didn't help in any way, either
(even with sleep 5 or sleep 10). And I'm on the fast end :)

As said, for me, gdm's gnome-settings-daemon seems to actually hang
after I'm logging in. Still seems to be some kind of a race condition,
as this only happens maybe 1 in 15 times or so.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 747126] Re: X crashes on first touchpad touch

2011-04-01 Thread John S. Gruber
That's a perfectly reasonable question, Daniel.

Thanks to Chase, it is going to the main natty repositories, no need for a PPA.
It has already been published at
http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/x/xserver-xorg-input-synaptics/
and should
be headed to all of them shortly (maybe it has already propagated fully).

I was able to install by running update-manager a few minutes ago
without doing anything special.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 747487] [NEW] [i865] GPU lockup (IPEHR: 0x02000011)

2011-04-01 Thread BertN45
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

I have tried xUbuntu resulting in this error after logging in to the
desktop. Gnome and Unity are completely unusable with this i865 GPU.
Gnome completely freezes and only power off helps. Unity does not even
start. I will continue to try xUbuntu, see what happens here. In
Ubuntu 10.10 everything worked perfectly also the 3D effects of Compiz.
Can't you re-use the driver of Ubuntu 10.10 for 11.04?
