[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 782004] [NEW] Keyboard hangs after holding down shift

2011-05-12 Thread Ramon Casha
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

I am using Gnome 3 shell on Natty. After holding down shift for some
time, the keyboard stops responding (every key that I press produces a
beep - even shift etc). My accessibility features are all turned off. No
dialog or notification appears on the screen. Closing applications does
not work. The only option is to log off and log in again.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 769977] Re: Sudden video crash on intel chipset

2011-05-12 Thread bigbrovar
I think I am having this same issue. Reported it here
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-
intel/+bug/779163 Its totally random but occurs when I either on a video
call with skype or watching video with vlc. I don't know if it helps but
the first time I got this issue was when I used kernel 2.6.38 on ubuntu
10.10 (which shipped with the kernel 2.6.35) so it might be a kernel
issue? also a friend who runs gentoo confirmed to me he is running same
issues and he too is on 2.6.38.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 781983] [NEW] Screen becomes corrupted under normal usage

2011-05-12 Thread Pedro Côrte-Real
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

After upgrading to natty the screen is now sometimes corrupted. I can't
trigger this with a fixed set of steps yet but it happens most when
switching virtual desktops, coming back from suspend or connecting or
disconnecting an external monitor. It cleans up completely by switching
to the text console and back.

A screenshot is attached of when this happens. The corruption is always
of the form of something not having been refreshed/drawn in, never that
there is something out of place. So sometimes google chrome will lose
some of its decorations or a window won't fully show up after having
been alt-tabbed in. For windows, giving them focus usually causes a
redraw that fixes the corruption. For the panel any element used gets
refreshed but the empty portions will only be refreshed with a vt
switch.

I'm using the classic gnome desktop without compositing. I've noticed it
in google chrome's decorations a lot and that does it's own drawing so
it could be related. I filed this under the intel driver but it could be
a core xserver bug. Would trying unity on the same system help narrow
down the issue?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 781956] [NEW] Compiz tweaking crashed new gui

2011-05-12 Thread Jake McGregor
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Just after a network upgrade from 10.10, the GUI worked fine, at least
until I changed a few settings that made the menu bars disappear and now
after several reboots it still fails to load the menu bars. The classic
gui works fine but I like the new one is set up, and hopefully it can be
restored.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 764195] Re: laptop screen blacklight brightness always at 100% (even on battery), can't be lowered

2011-05-12 Thread bro
I just received the W520 lenovo with quadro 1000m from nvidia and
installed ubuntu 11.04.

I cannot change the screen brightness. What's worse: If I try with the Fn
shortcuts my screen freezes and I need a hard reboot (!).
Bios has graphics set to discrete only.

I can confirm this on my desktop (Radeon HD 4850) and notebook (Fusion

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 753144] Re: focused, or maximized windows blank

2011-05-12 Thread WarriorIng64
I have this issue on a desktop using an integrated GeForce 6150SE nForce
430, using the current NVidia proprietary driver. I tried the workaround
discussed above for increasing the frame buffer size in my BIOS settings
(from 64MB to 128MB in my case), and it worked for me.

Between this and wireless not wanting to work on my desktop, this is the
most hardware-related trouble I've had with Ubuntu in a long time. But I
do like Unity, which runs with no problems on my laptop with Intel
graphics. Hoping this gets fixed soon.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 779521] Re: nVidia GT525M binary driver does not install properly in Ubuntu 11.04

2011-05-12 Thread ctrl0l
I did it.
I worked, now I have the right message: "This driver is activated and currently
in use" and I can use the new interface.

The bad piece of news is that the performance now is very bad, much worst than
without this driver.
I tried Google Earth and it freezes for second or two very often. This was not
in this way when I used the original (Noveau) driver.
BTW, lsmod reports the following:
video 19438 2 nouveau,i915

Does that mean that this "Experimental" driver is still Nouveau driver?

After upgrade to 11.04 nvidia proprietary drivers don't work. As a
result - compiz doesn't, and applications depending on it, like unity,
docky, etc.). I tried nvidia-current and nvidia-glx-173. I've got NVidia
GT 230.

Tried:
sudo apt-get purge nvidia-current
sudo apt-get install nvidia-current
sudo nvidia-xconfig
shutdown -r now

also graphical "System -> Administration -> Additional Drivers"

Additional drivers says that "This driver is activated, but not

libnotify bug). The GPU is Intel.

I have this on an ASUS A6km with 32-bit Ubuntu 11.04. It might be the
same touchpad though, I think the Sony VAIO is quite similar to the ASUS
A-series.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 774207] Re: [Natty Intel 945GME] No desktop effects (kwin 100% cpu)

2011-05-12 Thread themroc
I found a solution for KDE and Kwin:
You have to deactivate the Effect BLUR (german: Verwischen).

After this and activate Kwin everything works normal.

But note, "Blur" was still working in the release before (Maverick).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 741930] Re: [natty] nvidia binary packages for older cards - dependencies not met

2011-05-12 Thread Tom Epperly
It would be nice if the "do you want to upgrade" window wouldn't come up
until a nvidia-96 driver is available. I upgraded my Mythbuntu system
because it kept periodically putting the "do you want to upgrade" window
on my screen. Because I don't really have a mouse hooked up to my
system, I have to go to another system to run xvncviewer to get rid of
the upgrade window. I eventually upgraded to get rid of the window. Now
that I've upgraded, my system is hosed because nvidia-96 isn't available
and I can't seem to get nouveau to use 60Hz.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 745112] Re: [arrandale] desktop is messed up (goes black) when laptop is docked with two external 1920x1200 monitors (x86_64)

2011-05-12 Thread entonjackson
In Natty 32bit with Unity when I plug in a beamer, the beamer is recognized,
and you can see the panel at the top, but not the wallpaper, so the rest is
black. Putting windows via drag and drop to the beamers side makes me see the
grabbing hand cursor, but not the window itself. Changing Resolution on each
screen makes no difference.
Making a reboot, or having the beamer plugged in on booting up makes it work,
like it did in 10.10

I have Dell Vostro 1520 with an intel video card and the current drivers
installed.
Anybody has a solution?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 781804] [NEW] Error in driver causes numerous sudden "logouts"

2011-05-12 Thread Vsevolod Velichko
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

Since the natty dev-version (somewhere between alpha and beta) my session -
both unity and gnome-classic - suddenly logouts in absolutely different cases,
it can appear even when there is only urxvt open.
Since apport isn't able to catch such crashes, I couldn't report it earlier,
but when I tried lightdm today, I've found the backtrace in it's log (now I
see, that gdm is also writing it):

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 781788] [NEW] Xorg crash randomly since upgrade to Natty

2011-05-12 Thread EliCoten
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Can't seem to find any pattern. Display randomly crashes and restarts
with login screen. I think this problem may be related to unity. Using
'classic' interface hasn't crashed yet... though I haven't tried it as
much.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 706386] Re: Screen blanks on lid close, never unblank (reboot required)

2011-05-12 Thread Johannes Gowin
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 49521 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/49521

I'm experiencing this issue on a Lenovo U160 (Intel GMA HD) running Xubuntu
11.04 instantly after closing the lid. The lid close action is set to "do
nothing". Afterwards I have to hard reboot.
Wrote this also in bug file #49521, but that's from 2006.
If I can do anything to trace the bug tell me.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 661248] Re: Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT doesn't work with nvidia-current 260

2011-05-12 Thread Alex Bell
As I see if you have laptop with "right" graphic card - Ubuntu is not for you :(
Sorry, I'm not that clever to solve this problem, but I've tried to search for
people who could fix this. As you see the result is nothing.
As I understand the only way to run Ubuntu if you have the "right" card - is to
roll back to 2.6.32 linux kernel (linux-headers & linux-image).
Sorry for my English, thank you for reading.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 762478] Re: [nouveau] No icons shown in unity launcher

2011-05-12 Thread TheWhisp
Yes. I also installed Ubuntu 10.10 and Launcher worked with my FX 5200.
But it froze and I couldn't do anything. So launcher not showing icons
in 11.04 is not a hardware problem. Is someone working on the fix?

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 764650] Re: Flash video with hardware acceleration causes X crash with radeon driver

2011-05-12 Thread jovan dragisic
the issue is not KDE related. I just added fglrx to Ubuntu Natty, and going
into fullscreen and exiting made X hang. This is with hw acceleration.
dmesg from the hang appended.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 763422] Re: [i965] idle black screen plus other issues Ubuntu 11.04

2011-05-12 Thread Dustan Ashley
I also have the screen blanking issue which requires a reboot to resolve
(Same behaviour, can only see the mouse pointer). This is a complete
show stopper for me as I now have to reboot far more frequently than in
windows.

I am not sure how widespread this is, but I can confirm it presents on all
three of my 11.04 installations (One running the nVidia binary display drivers,
and the other two on different Intel chipsets).

The priority on this should be escalted.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 781402] Re: Ubuntu 11.04 / Unity freezing when screen is 'woken up'

2011-05-12 Thread serio.jeff...@gmail.com
I have the same exact problem. I've installed Ubuntu 11.04 about 4
times, and each time I've experienced the same issue. Every time I
leave my computer idle long enough for the display to go to sleep, it
freezes on the screensaver when I "awaken" it. All I am able to do is
move the cursor. I'm on an ASUS Essentio Series CM5570 desktop
computer. I've noticed the original poster is also using an ASUS, but a
different model. I am somewhat suspecting it could be an issue with the
hardware, but I'm not sure.

However, I have also noticed that when I use "Blank Screen" for
screensaver choice, the freezing does not occur upon awakening the
display.

I hope this narrows it down a bit. I would appreciate any help on this.
:)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 698121] Re: xf86OpenConsole: VT_WAITACTIVE failed: Interrupted system call

2011-05-12 Thread Phil Welch
Andres,

Although I did nothing 'cause I knew nothing to do to resolve this bug,
in my case it was resolved merely by installing all required and
suggested updates to my system. Other than doing that I can offer no
suggestions or steps to resolve your issue other than the suggestions
offered me by the experts.

I would mention that using another browser other than the Firefox
default substantially increased the delta time between failures.  And;
although very imprecise, the more sluggish my system got the more likely
it was going to fail soon, so if I was doing coding or the like, when I
noticed the sluggishness, I rebooted which gave me a fresh start.
However, after awhile, I gave up on that and started doing my coding on
my production server; a decidedly risky but fortunately temporary
solution.

Best of Luck with your problem.

Phil

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 745112] Re: [arrandale] desktop is messed up (goes black) when laptop is docked with two external 1920x1200 monitors (x86_64)

2011-05-12 Thread Neil Crighton
I also had this problem with an x201s. The display on the laptop alone
was fine, but on attempting to plug in an external display, both
displays go black. I downgraded my linux kernel from 2.6.38-9 to
2.6.35-22-generic from the maverick repositories and this seems to have
fixed the problem.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 781445] Re: Xorg's HAL causes Purple screen or Black Screen on GDM startup.

2011-05-12 Thread Mike Ferreira
@Bugbot- This is not an "nVidia" thing. The happens with nVidia, ATI
Radeon, i915, Sandy Bridge, etc. This causes an nVidia chip instlled
consurrent with a Sandy Bridge no to be quesried and return it's mode
data.

Basically, it seems to be causing graphics modes data to be returned in
correctly, so that an invalid graphics mode is set.

Administratively--
If you would have read ths bug report thoroughly / carefully and the referred
question to launchpad about how to report it... I DON'T PERSONALLY HAVE THIS
PROBLEM! Which is why I asked all over about how to report this and where to
report this, before I did report this, so that ithis problem would not be
marked i"invalid."

Remember, I've been helping people solve this problem. Instead of
having one PC worth of data, I have 100's of PC's worth solved and most
share a common problem.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 124406] Re: Keyboard keys get stuck and repeat

2011-05-12 Thread Bryce Harrington
As I mentioned earlier, this was on the agenda for the xserver wishlist
bugs session at UDS, and was discussed yesterday. From reviewing the
current status of the bug here and upstream, there seems to be a
legitimate issue in general, however the general fix for this (e.g.
Ajax's branch) are not things we would want to risk pulling in as a
backport, nor something of high enough importance for the ubuntu x team
to invest time into, so for these reasons we're closing the issue as a
wontfix at this time.

However, we are concerned about the cases where specific hardware is
significantly broken (as several have described in recent comments).
But these issues are difficult to analyze and work on within the context
of this particular bug report. For users with issues that need deeper
investigation, please file a NEW bug using this command:

  $ ubuntu-bug xorg

It would be helpful if you can reference bug 124406, and include the
word 'keyboard' in the title so it gets autofiled predictably.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 760632] Re: Resizing Konsole crashes the whole system

2011-05-12 Thread Berend Dekens
@Stefanek kudos for a stable work-around! I only replace Xorg with the
1.9 version and left the nvidia driver at 270.41.06 and after dragging
Konsole across 2 monitors for 5 minutes I still didn't lock up!

And I agree with the general consensus that this is quite severe and
taking way too long to fix. I just disabled the update notifications for
Kubuntu and I'll resume updating my system once this bug is resolved...

i also wish to note that i am now using,

and the graphics blackscreen on idle has reduced 10 fold, but does still occur.
typically i had just converted my whole family to ubuntu as this bug occurs XD
so we are now all stuck with this issue

Yeah, I worked with upstream to have that tested and verified that it
works, I'm just building the new deb on ARM to make sure it works
(takes more than 20 hours to build).

Upstream also said that they will be releasing a new version in 2, 3
weeks, so there is no need to backport to Debian nor Oneiric.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 763005] Re: Fglrx with Compiz's "Sync to Vblank" makes Unity/Compiz plugins to crawl

Guys, after installing compiz settings manager and removing vsync
checkbox, performance is ok for HD 4770. Ati takes care of vsync with
their Tear Free whatever so no vsync issues after removing that
checkbox. This is major problem for Ati owners.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 755841] Re: [sandybridge] video tearing

I have reproduced the problem on Ubuntu Natty and LMDE with recent

thing holding me back from using linux as my main OS. Fullscreen full HD
video with tearing is unacceptable for users who spend any amount of

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 780961] Re: Natty Xorg crashes on Thinkpad X201 (i915 driver) during screen updates

2011-05-12 Thread Selene Scriven
... or apparently not a dupe. I have the updated package installed
already (and have all along). And I see "no error state collected" in
/sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/i915_error_state.

I'm still getting segfaults a few times per day though. :( The only
theory I've got is that sawfish may be sending X11 requests in a
different order sometimes, and may trigger a completely different Xorg
bug. I really have no clue though.
