[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 781445] Re: Xorg's HAL causes Purple screen or Black Screen on GDM startup.
Adding GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD=text to /etc/default/grub tries to over-ride the variable set gfxpayload=$linux_gfx_mode in 10_linux where GNU says that if set in the/etc/defau;t/grub : ## QUOTE ## GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX' Set to `text' to force the Linux kernel to boot in normal text mode, `keep' to preserve the graphics mode set using `GRUB_GFXMODE', `WIDTHxHEIGHT'[`xDEPTH'] to set a particular graphics mode, or a sequence of these separated by commas or semicolons to try several modes in sequence. Depending on your kernel, your distribution, your graphics card, and the phase of the moon, note that using this option may cause GNU/Linux to suffer from various display problems, particularly during the early part of the boot sequence. If you have problems, set this option to `text' and GRUB will tell Linux to boot in normal text mode. ## END QUOTE ## Which later in 10_linux checks $linux_gfx_mode and if set to text tells the kernel not to boot graphics... (translation) This is a WORKAROUND telling the kernel not to use the GRUB_GFXMODE to set GFXTERM and not use KMS. This workaround, in essence does the same as 2 other workarounds of rolling back the kernel to 2.6.37.x or to roll back the version of Grub 1.99 to GNU Grub 1.98, in that they both them would ignor the GRUB_GFXMODE call.s All three of these workarounds circumvent around the present process by crippling it or ignoring it. A correct and closer Workaround is to set the parameters of GRUB_GFXMODE and pass them using KMS and the designed process... Which is working as a viable workaround out on the Support Forum. Setting the parameters of the video hardware and monitor manually as a workaround and having it work correctly, tells me the process does work, but it ia apparently s not being set up correctly with the right data. So the real question is: What is the process that VBE is using to query hardware when GRUB_GFXMODE is set auto? HAL? VBEPROBE / VBEINFO? Then we can check what in that process is passing bad parm's or locking up hardware. Whatever this process IS. this does seem to be where this problem seems to begin. If you leave this as saying that is the fix. then you are saying that GNU Grub 1.99, the Linux 2.6.38.x series kernel and Xorg X11R7.6 are all broke by not using the process at all. Anyone of these are all upstream, but this all affects Ubuntu (us). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-settings in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/781445 Title: Xorg's HAL causes Purple screen or Black Screen on GDM startup. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 195982] Re: Shift key (and caps lock) stop working when using VMWare
The behavior I saw before shift, ctrl stopped working was that all keyboard events and the mouse state were captured. The mouse moved, but stayed as the guest OS's mouse icon (vs Kubuntu's). I could not get to a local console and had to remotely kill the vmplayer process to get back any control. I also tried export VMWARE_USE_SHIPPED_GTK=yes in /usr/bin/vmplayer, which seemed to make the problem happen less frequently, but it still happens. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 781445] Re: Xorg's HAL causes Purple screen or Black Screen on GDM startup.
Like I said. I don't have this problem on this box or my 4 other's. I do have other 2 test boxs that are currently running Oneiric Ocelot 11.10 that I could pull down to reinstall 11.04 and recreate this problem with various hardware (Intel or AMD CPU's; nvidia, ati or intel video chipsets)... Or just look out on the support forum = there's no shortage of data. As for the comment that HAL is no longer used by the xorg.conf... My xorg.conf says it is. Is it lying to me again? (attached0 Next and included in this issue is the Sandy Bridge chipsets (Dell Alienware) where the y also have NVidia SLI's or ATI Xfire's... The query process is seeing the Sandy Bridge video modes, by not going further the the other chipsets to return their data. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-settings in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/781445 Title: Xorg's HAL causes Purple screen or Black Screen on GDM startup. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 569948] Re: When multiple users login, GDM doesn't come back after any of them logs out leading to DATA LOSS for the others
once you get the blank screen, does ctrl-alt-F7, ctrl-alt-F8, ctrl- alt-F9, ctrl-alt-F10, ... get you back to a graphics console? does ctrl- alt-F1 through F6 get you to a text login console where you can restart the gdm service as root? I often see that on our multi-user systems upon user logout; also I've wondered if it had to do with VNC servers coming and going in the background. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 782552] [NEW] [xorg-edgers] Xorg crash (SIGSEGV) when taking screenshot
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg Any time I try to capture a screenshot of the entire screen, with any program, Xorg crashes. Screenshots of individual windows work OK. Even using select a region with the Screenshot plugin for Xfce4-panel causes a crash as soon as I click the button (before ever getting to select anything). This is the first time I've tried to take a screenshot since installing this system so I don't know if the issue exists in older versions of X. I'll try reverting to official packages and see if it still crashes. Before this I was using an entirely different machine, with an nVidia card and x86 CPU, so I can't really say if it's ever worked on this system. I just updated Ubuntu and logged back into the unity desktop (i've been using Unity 2D because of this bug) but now when logging back into Ubuntu desktop my Icons show up in he launcher which is great but now I have noticed that the Launcher wont dodge windows anymore and open windows hide underneath the launcher also the ALT F2 wont start the run dialog ether. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 781143] [NEW] two finger scroll event should end when fingers are lifted from touchpad
You have been subscribed to a public bug: For awhile now (including in Ubuntu 10.10 and 11.04), I've experienced an issue with scroll events initiated on my Touchpad. Steps to reproduce are: 1) Open Firefox 2) Start a vertical scroll event on Touchpad (two- finger scroll, in my case) 3) Remove fingers from Touchpad 4) Quickly hit ctrl The results are that Firefox will start zooming in or zooming out the page. I also experience this if I start a scroll event and quickly switch to a different workspace -- where my Terminal will start scrolling up or down. I would expect that the scroll event would die when I remove my fingers from the Touchpad, and probably when a meta key gets hit, too. I'm on a Thinkpad W510 on Ubuntu 11.04 using Unity. Here's all the info I can find on my Touchpad: [ 10.808053] Synaptics Touchpad, model: 1, fw: 7.2, id: 0x1c0b1, caps: 0xd047b3/0xb4/0xa [ 10.863551] input: SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad as /devices/platform/i8042/serio1/input/input7 I do have the synaptics-dkms package installed (version 1.1.0) ** Affects: xorg (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- two finger scroll event should end when fingers are lifted from touchpad https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/781143 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg in Ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 782718] [NEW] Screen corruption with ati graphics after dist-upgrade to natty
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg After upgrading to Natty, I have noticed a problem with my graphics. The desktop rendering becomes corrupted (see screenshot). This seems to happen at random after a couple of hours of use... I cannot find a reliable way of triggering the bug. Dragging the mouse across the screen clears the corrupted rendering, and the desktop can be seen as normal. Application windows are generally not affected, although sometimes artefacts of the corruption can be seen in areas of the window (for example the menu bar). I'm afraid I know very little about X, and how best to debug any problems. Please let me know if I can provide any extra information to help with the debugging. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 782726] [NEW] Dual-Head Configuration does not work properly with Compiz
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg After upgrading from 10.10 Maverick to 11.04 Natty I found that my dual- head display configuration on 10.10 no longer worked properly on 11.04. My desired set-up is to have two 1440x900 monitors set up side-by-side and the desktop stretched across the both of them. It took me some time to figure out the right configuration on 10.10, but I got it to work so I was less than enthused about it not working on 11.04. I documented a question on this issue here: https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/157414/+index I have attached a screenshot of my side-by-side configuration - as is clear the larger portion of the display is not shown right. After some digging, I found that a above-and-below configuration did work without the presentation being garbled. I'll try to attach a screenshot of that situation as well (after I've submitted the bug as it would appear it's not possible to attach multiple files??) Then, at the end of the day (literally) I stumbled upon a reference to issues with compiz - so I decided to try and log onto Ubuntu using Ubuntu Classic (No Effects). If I understand correctly, this option will force the system to run Metacity (??) window manager. After I did this, the side-by-side configuration worked without garbling. I therefore have a perfectly acceptable work-around for this problem (i.e. don't use compiz), and I've not lost anything in my transition from 10.10 to 11.04 (other than a days worth of digging to find the work-around). However I felt that it is probably appropriate to open a bug on this. As i indicated above, the problem went away once i stopped using compiz - so I think that's where the problem is but I've not been able to ascertain that (in other words the problem may be lower down somewhere). [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 774510] [NEW] Pointer Disappears When Cursor Type Changes
You have been subscribed to a public bug: The mouse pointer disappears right where the pointer type changes (i.e. going from the regular cursor to the link selection cursor). This happens on Ubuntu 11.04, both Classic (GNOME 2) and Unity 2D, and Kubuntu 11.04. It did not happen on Ubuntu 10.10. This doesn't affect any functionality, but it is kind of annoying. ** Affects: xorg (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Pointer Disappears When Cursor Type Changes https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/774510 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg in Ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
