Thanks for your bug report. I believe xorg is the correct package to report this against, as it involves the user being thrown back to the login screen (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage#Graphical_Environment), but the fact that the problem doesn't occur in an Ubuntu-2d session would seem to suggest Compiz may be at fault. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 888872] [NEW] Unity 3D desktop crashes in Oneiric using ATI Mbility Radeon X1600
You have been subscribed to a public bug: Summary: Unity 3D desktop crashes in Oneiric using ATI Mbility Radeon X1600 Problem: There doesn't seem to be rhyme or reason to this, be it having Firefox running, opening a link in Chromium to open in a new tab or watching a .flv video clip, using the subcontextual menus of Thunderbird, or watching videos in Totem. The desktop crashes bringing one to the login screen. Sometimes the desktop crashes as it's appearing. The last thing one sees is a black screen with text, and something about Pulseaudio, but I'm not sure it's an error as I see no red text (just white), and there's no time to read it before the login screen appears. Steps to reproduce: Login using Unity 3d. Use your system. Results The desktop crashes Login screen appears Expected results: No crashes. Comments: At one point I thought the problem was due to indicator-weather, but I removed it, and although crashes became less frequent, they increased drastically two days ago (after updating). This behaviour was non-existent in Natty. I went a whole day without this behaviour by logging in using Unity 2D, and went along using all the above apps to no crashes. I noticed there is a history of problems with Radeon video drivers, but they didn't describe this type of crash, and they seemed to be fixed in Natty, which makes me think it might not be a regression. The only other issue I can think of that might be related is that turning compiz plugins on and off (Widgets Layer, and Zoom Desktop), presumably the non-default one, crashes Unity. I looked into it and sources say that this could be an issue with my video card, which I find outrageous considering it's only a few years old (well within the 5 year margin for compiz support), which points to a faulty driver and/or lack of proper driver support. System Info lists my graphics support as Gallium 0.4 on ATI RV530. I found that odd. Wikipedia says that the my video card, although based on the RV530, is NOT the ATI RV530. So, I don't know if it's a matter of the wrong driver being assigned and there's no longer a Xorg.conf file to check, so I'm at a loss. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 829086] Re: Artifacts in 3D with Sandy Bridge
Yes, intel-gpu-tools in both Natty and Oneiric doesn't work from the repository (you get the error - Couldn't map MMIO region: No such file or directory). Compiling intel-gpu-tools from source is one option, but I also found a PPA that works, and you can also just download the .deb without adding the PPA: https://launchpad.net/~sarvatt/+archive/intel-gpu-tools For those people that are still experiencing some artifacts, I have been playing around with the "sudo intel_reg_write 0x9404 0x1800" fix most of the afternoon and have come to find that it matters when you run this command. This command must be run before any 3D happens, if you have already had the artifacts and then run the command it will not fix it, even if you restart your 3D application. It appears once the graphics card is in this "state" already, the fix won't work. You must run the command just after you started the computer, when there have been no artifacts or 3D yet. Because the command has to be run as root (and it doesn't seem to matter if you run it before X starts), I have found the perfect place to place this line is in the /etc/rc.local file, just before the "exit 0" line. Since /etc/rc.local is executed by root, you don't have to put sudo in front either. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to mesa in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/829086 Title: Artifacts in 3D with Sandy Bridge To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/mesa/+bug/829086/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 550625] Re: Alps touchpad is recognized but synaptics clients and scrolling do not work
Seth, thanks for your extensive feedback regarding the trackstick. Perceived behavior after patch application is that it's hard to point exact pixels. It feels like the cursor is too fast no matter how gently the trackstick is pushed. Changing the acceleration factor does actually have expected effect, i.e. changed acceleration. However no matter whether the acceleration is set towards higher values or lower values, one feels a significant (and constant) loss of "pointing precision" in the pointer while it is controlled via trackstick. If I understood correctly various touchpad revisions installed by different manufacturers report the same signature thus one has to use very compromise settings because the driver doesn't know which touchpad revision is installed (unless e.g. DMI table is inspected for retrieving more information about laptop). If it is the case I can understand it must be pain to satisfy everyone. Would you mind mentioning some few hints for anyone willing to poke around the trackstick sensitivity in the source code coming with the debian package of the driver? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-input-synaptics in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/550625 Title: Alps touchpad is recognized but synaptics clients and scrolling do not work To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/linux/+bug/550625/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 828761] Re: Resume from suspend takes much more time when nvidia-current driver is installed.

There are two related (current) threads on this issue I've been following. thttp://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=11445091 http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1867282 I have a very slow resume from suspend, with all of the symptoms described above. I also have a delay when switching back to Unity from any virtual terminal via CTRL+ALT+F1 to go to VT1 and CTRL+ALT+F7 to get back to X. I've been experience this problem sense the launch day of 11.10, when I upgraded. My system is up to date. I have nvidia graphics with nvidia-current drivers. Let me know if there is any more info I can provide that would be helpful. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/828761 Title: Resume from suspend takes much more time when nvidia-current driver is installed. Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 771788] Re: nVidia driver activated and apparently being used but reported as not being used by jockey-gtk
hi Alessandro, I don't konw, what's wrong with your machine. I have tried Unity yesterday and I get 3D there too. But there is also a Unity-Desktop available that doesn't need 3D. So I think, that it is something different. Unity is not to be blamed in my opinion. Because here, Unity works with 3D. That seems to be something different And in LinuxMint, there will be a fork of Gnome2 called MATE. They are already implementing it and I hope, that it will be available for you with the outcome of LinuxMint 12. And here the driver is in Use too and runs fine. Also in Untiy. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 829086] Re: Artifacts in 3D with Sandy Bridge
We got an email back from Intel, the issue was fixed in Keith's drm- intel-next kernel branch and heading upstream. Apparently it's a clock gating issue on Sandybridge. As a temporary fix, if you have intel-gpu-tools, you can run: sudo intel_reg_write 0x9404 0x1800 For me it seems to have fixed the issue, I am running our software through a test now and so good so far. Obviously I am very thankful and appreciate all the hard work which > Seth devoted to the driver implementation. Just for the moment I would > disagree that this patch is ready for mainline. I did make some adjustments to sensitivity early on based on feedback. I apologize if I overlooked any subsequent comments. It's not true that trackstick sensitivity can't be adjusted in the driver, but it is true that these devices appear to report very different values for the trackstick once the touchpad is put in absolute mode, which causes the observed jump in sensitivity. Just becuase the driver changes have been merged doesn't mean we can't continue to improve it. The difficulty with the sensitivity is that it's partly personal preference, and from the comments I've seen I suspect that it might also vary from machine to machine. On the machines I'm testing with the sensitivity seems fine, and further reduction of the sensitivity in the driver actually impairs the ability to make fine adjustments to the cursor position. Actually it's _less_ sensitive than when I load the driver with proto=bare. It also seems to respond to adjusting the Acceleration setting on the Mouse tab of the Mouse and Touchpad settings. There was a rash of missing 10-wacom.conf's in I guess March 2011? I'll just continue showing users whose Wacom tablets aren't "working" due to a lack of a 10-wacom.conf, for whatever mysterious reason, how to install it manually. I can > add though that the scripts did not cause any problems in 11.04. This could be caused /etc/init/rc.conf having 'console output' in 11.10, which allows init scripts to interact with the console. But init scripts *should* limit their interaction to sending output. You could try redirecting input and output to /dev/null within the script, to see if this fixes the problem. Anyway, closing this bug report as invalid. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 812594] Re: HP USB Graphics Adapter (Displaylink) shows green screen
I did upgrade to Oneric, and yes the issue still occurs with Oneric, I still get the green screen when I plug it in, and tweaking of Xorg.conf is to no avail. This bug is also reported to Canonical Paid Support under my company globeone case: 00019304 I even went to the great lengths of sending a physical HP USB Display Link adapter to the Canonical London office so they could have the actual hardware to fix the bug with. This, as the project that my company is working on is dependent on getting a USB->VGA adapter working under Ubuntu. You would think with paid support (2 licences, one for Lucid and one for Natty) and actually sending the physical hardware Canonical/Ubuntu Community could come up with something better than: "I can't promise we'll get to it (we get way more bugs filed than we can usually get to), but your testing and feedback can help out if and when we do." [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 550625] Re: Alps touchpad is recognized but synaptics clients and scrolling do not work
I already remarked here that trackstick sensitivity becomes broken when this ALPS patches get applied. While it was an optional package I was okay with it. However I would disagree about getting the patches obligatorily. There was no reaction about it, I could speculate that people using touchpad usually don't care much about trackstick or based on some technical argumentation the developer believes the trackstick sensitivity problem cannot be related to this patch. If I am the vast minority with my Latitude E6410 I would take the time to remove the patched driver during kernel upgrade. Obviously I am very thankful and appreciate all the hard work which Seth devoted to the driver implementation. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 771788] Re: nVidia driver activated and apparently being used but reported as not being used by jockey-gtk
@Alessandro, this bug was exclusively on the drive being reported as not being used but actually being used and working perfectly. For the bugs related to graphic problems, reporting users were asked to report separate bugs. If you want to get attention to your bug it is better that you open a specific bug on your issue, attaching all the relevant information for your system, by entering from a terminal or with ALT F2 "ubuntu-bug nvidia-common", or if you believe it is a Unity bug, "ubuntu-bug unity". Doing that you will have a much larger chance that your bug is paid the right attention, here it will be overlooked for sure as this was a different problem than yours. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 771788] Re: nVidia driver activated and apparently being used but reported as not being used by jockey-gtk
Hi Andrea Wait. What you say would be true if the problem stemmed from the Nvidia drivers, but this seems not to be the case, the reality is that Unity is to be blamed, for the driver works well. I surfed many forums but they don't give me more pieces of information than I already have: usually everything revolves around installing drivers, forcing Unity start bla bla bla... I've already tried all that stuff and certainly I cannot say I didn't do something about that. Actually I've been trying everything. To no avail. So why doesn't the bug team tell me they won't just solve that UNITY bug, it's Unity the problem, not the nvidia-driver, otherwise the control panel wouldn't tell me that the driver is IN USE. When the nvidia-driver was buggy it used to tell me it was NOT IN USE. But now the situation has changed: it's IN USE. For me, these hints did it through several distros now. And before I do a bugreport, I try to help myself. I don't want to bother the bugteam. And thorugh helping yourself, you also learn something in Linux. But to be honest: there is already a long forum at nvidias homepage about things like that. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 550625] Re: Alps touchpad is recognized but synaptics clients and scrolling do not work
Everyone: I'm happy to report that the ALPS patches we've been testing have been accepted by the mainline input subsystem maintainer and should show up in kernel version 3.3. We also plan to include them in the Ubuntu kernel for the 12.04 release. Thanks for your help in testing! pauljohn32: In at least one case so far erratic mouse behavior has been shown to be caused by apparent electrical interference from other hardware, and since you say that plugging in USB devices causes the behavior it makes me wonder if you have a similar situation. This probably wouldn't create very dramatic movements when the touchpad was reporting relative motion events, so it may have been there all along but only became noticeable with the new driver as it reports absolute position events. Do I understand correctly that the dumps you gave were taken right after you saw sluggish cursor movement? If so I'll look and see if the data offer any explanation. BlogCrawler: In your log I see a typo that was fixed prior to the 0.10 version of the driver, so I don't think you're actually using the version from coment #492. You can check what version you have installed by running 'apt-cache showpkg psmouse-alps-dkms' in a terminal. If it shows the 0.10 version installed, you could still be using a previous version if you haven't rebooted or reloaded the driver since installing. To be safe, I suggest that after you verify you have the 0.10 package installed you power off your machine, remove all power (including the battery) for several seconds, then put the battery back in and boot up. Some of the old versions of the driver could leave the touchpad in a bad state when the driver initialization failed where your log shows the failure, and removing all power will ensure that the touchpad is fully reset.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 884356] Re: Unable to Install AMD ATI FGLRX Graphics Card Drivers Post-Release Updates
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal with as a ".crash" file. Please follow these instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer. If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport in /etc/default/apport and restart. Now open your file manager, navigate to your /var/crash directory and open the crash report you wish to submit. If this fails you will have to open a terminal and file your report with 'ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash' where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report. If you get an error that you aren't allowed to access this report you will have to file it with 'sudo ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash'. I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding. ** Package changed: nautilus (Ubuntu) => fglrx-installer (Ubuntu) ** Changed in: fglrx-installer (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided => Low ** Changed in: fglrx-installer (Ubuntu) Status: New => Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to fglrx-installer in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/884356 Title: Unable to Install AMD ATI FGLRX Graphics Card Drivers Post-Release Updates To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fglrx-installer/+bug/884356/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 888487] [NEW] Default video card driver broken
You have been subscribed to a public bug: I have upgraded from 11.04 to 11.10. 11.10 comes with a default video driver that does not work on a computer that has a Nvidia video card. The desktop freezes to that there is no way out except by switching off the computer. I then installed the proprietary Nvidia driver thru the Ubuntu Softare Center, and have solved the problem. I think that the upgrade tool should check that the computer has a Nvidia card and install its driver instead of installing the default one. ** Affects: libdrm (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Default video card driver broken https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/888487 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to libdrm in Ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 771788] Re: nVidia driver activated and apparently being used but reported as not being used by jockey-gtk
Hi Alessandro, Gnome-Shell is an alternative Desktop-environment to Unity. You can find that out here: http://wiki.ubuntuusers.de/Gnome_Shell?highlight=Gnome-Shell This Desktop-Environment works so pleasing for me and with 3D-Support. And here in the latest Firefox-Version, I can also use Torbutton again!! Perhaps if you install Gnome-Shell and use this instead of Unity??? The current version of Gnome-Shell in Ubuntu 11.10 is 3.2.1 And there, the extensions come back to life if you also install this ppa-repository here: https://launchpad.net/~webupd8team/+archive/gnome3 And then you need to reboot your machine and select GNOME als your Desktop and then you are in Gnome-Shell and there, 3D should work for you too. Becuase the output in your last posting said, that 3D-effects work for you. So it should work.
