[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 313514]
1. We know this is already a problem. 2. The fix to this problem is huge, difficult and very invasive. It requires a new protocol extension and all the inertia that comes with it. 3. The proper fix to this problem breaks client-side API. see 2. 4. Workarounds can be found, but are limited to some use-cases only and will not work for the generic solution, because see 2. 5. We don't have enough man-power to fix this at this point, because see 2. Please refrain from commenting on this bug unless you can help with 5. Points 1 to 4 are pretty much non-negotiable. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/313514 Title: MASTER: evdev driver ignores keycodes > 255 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/linux/+bug/313514/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 707202] Re: X Freezes when un-blanking screen
Are you still having this issue? Fwiw, the change in 2:1.7.6-2ubuntu7.5 simply fixes a null deref issue; not something likely to cause an X freeze. However, you could try downgrading xserver to an earlier version just to be absolutely certain. Issues related to unblanking screen more generally are due to faults in the power management settings. So I would suspect gnome-power-manager or the kernel to be more likely culprits. ** Changed in: xorg-server (Ubuntu) Status: New => Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/707202 Title: X Freezes when un-blanking screen To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/707202/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 595379] Re: [i865] Sometimes in Chrome or Screensaver X-boom crash and freeze
i865 is supported on Lucid but we are not backporting fixes any longer. We've found the driver support for the 8xx chips is quite fragile - a fix for one particular chip can break others that are only slightly different, so SRUs have too high a risk of regression to pursue them. Often with random screensaver settings the flaw is due to a 3D opengl effect triggering an underlying bug in the mesa driver for 8xx. Disabling 3D and/or not using 3D screensavers is the workaround in this case. I do not know if Chrome uses opengl or 3d in any form, but if it does it could be affected similarly. ** Summary changed: - Sometimes in Chrome or Screensaver X-boom crash and freeze + [i865] Sometimes in Chrome or Screensaver X-boom crash and freeze ** Package changed: xorg-server (Ubuntu) => mesa (Ubuntu) ** Changed in: mesa (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed => Won't Fix -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/595379 Title: [i865] Sometimes in Chrome or Screensaver X-boom crash and freeze To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mesa/+bug/595379/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 574576] Re: [GeForce 310M] freeze w/ screen garbling (suspect xorg crash) [Lucid]
It sounds like a GPU lockup. These are notoriously hard to debug. On -intel there are tools and such for doing so, but those don't exist for nouveau. It is likely that this issue is fixed in a newer kernel since GPU lockups tend to be bugs in the kernel drm code. So, you might try just upgrading your kernel. Please test Precise (e.g. with a live cd), and if it still occurs there we can approach upstream about it. ** Package changed: xorg-server (Ubuntu) => xserver-xorg-video-nouveau (Ubuntu) ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-nouveau (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed => Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-nouveau in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/574576 Title: [GeForce 310M] freeze w/ screen garbling (suspect xorg crash) [Lucid] To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-nouveau/+bug/574576/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 872744] Re: Xorg freeze
High X CPU issues are almost always due to bugs in client programs where they make too many X requests (e.g. stuck in a loop). [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 861268] Re: text corruption in terminals (xterm, urxvt) and emacs
My dev setup: nvidia drivers ubuntu 11.10 64bit xterm vim I've tried two possible solutions mentioned here: http://lists.clug.org.za/pipermail/clug-tech/2011-June/045329.html Which are: CCSM -> Workarounds -> Fix screen updated in XGL with fglrx CCSM -> Workarounds -> Force synchronization between X and GLX But these didn't work for me. I do find that if I turn off syntax colors in vim the problem seems to go away (or at least the probability of it occurring is so low I haven't yet seen it). alt-tab then escape is a way to redraw the xterm screen as well. I can't seem to turn on unity-2d as in James' instructions. unity-2d is installed but not option in the gears menu (I haven't hunted for an alternate way to turn it on as yet). It'd be great if someone has another workaround that doesn't involve turning off syntax highlighting. Adding another image attachment example with areas that are lost highlighted in case more evidence helps... Thanks. ** Attachment added: "Another example of screen redraw problems. xterm vim unity" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/861268/+attachment/2611810/+files/unity-xterm-redraw-problem.jpg -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/861268 Title: text corruption in terminals (xterm, urxvt) and emacs To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/861268/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 571573] Re: [arrandale] no tty (freeze the system) [Hybrid graphics]
Hybrid graphics isn't really supported on lucid. You probably should uninstall nvidia and just use Intel if tty access is important. You could also attempt to turn off kernel modesetting, although I don't recall if that was still an option in lucid. I think the actual issue here is a kernel conflict between KMS and -nvidia with the TTY's on Lucid so am refiling. If anyone can reproduce on Precise, please file a new bug about it with 'ubuntu-bug xorg' and we can have another look (hybrid graphics is one of the focus areas for Precise). ** Summary changed: - [arrandale] no tty (freeze the system) + [arrandale] no tty (freeze the system) [Hybrid graphics] ** Package changed: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu) => linux (Ubuntu) ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed => New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/571573 Title: [arrandale] no tty (freeze the system) [Hybrid graphics] To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/571573/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 611380] Re: segfault in KDE app not caught; causes X crash
Please collect a full backtrace on this crash - see http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Backtracing for guidance. ** Description changed: (As this bug probably has something to do with the interaction between the KDE app(s) in question and GNOME and X, I'm not totally sure where to put this.) --- updated tl;dr: If I'm using a KDE app during a GNOME session, sometimes it will log me out, which upon further research is caused by an X Server crash. This happens when a KDE program segfaults. The problem is that I know quite well that the segmentation faults in KDE apps are usually caught by the crash handler. And since I don't have a KDE desktop, I don't think the crash handler actually catches these segfaults when one is not using the full KDE desktop. Obviously, it probably should. --- I'm using the usual Ubuntu (GNOME) install, updated regularly but running one or two KDE-based apps on top of it - the one that most commonly triggers this condition is KolourPaint on top of GNOME, but that's because that's the one I most commonly use. (Then again, I'm using it because GNOME-based paint program clones are not nearly at that level of development.) This is what I generally do: 1. Log in and start any GNOME programs. This works fine. 2. Start the KDE-based program. This also works fine. 3. At some point while fooling around with said KDE-based program, the entire X Server is brought down. No, I can't seem to isolate this to any particular action or set of actions. Notes: 1. This error seems to have replaced the fact that when said program crashes, it brings up an error screen with the intent to report a bug, where the button to actually report said bug is nonfunctional (due to the fact that I do not actually have a full complement of Kubuntu packages). 2. The error in question, both in the previous report-a-bug screen and now with X crashes, seems to be some sort of segmentation fault. Not that I know what that means. 3. I didn't report this error when it brought up the KDE error screen. I report it now. That's because I'd vastly prefer catching bugs, even without saving program state, to completely upending X. Ending every program without so much as giving the user a chance to save state is /not nice/. 4. Despite the fact that I'm not totally sure whether this is an X bug or not, I used the report-with-X-info anyway; it might be useful. 5. I'm going to get a backtrace as soon as I can. + Backtrace: + 0: /usr/bin/X (xorg_backtrace+0x3b) [0x80e937b] + 1: /usr/bin/X (0x8048000+0x61c7d) [0x80a9c7d] + 2: (vdso) (__kernel_rt_sigreturn+0x0) [0x986410] + 3: /usr/lib/xorg/modules/libfb.so (fbSegment+0x215) [0xe68045] + 4: /usr/lib/xorg/modules/libfb.so (fbZeroLine+0x13c) [0xe64bec] + 5: /usr/lib/xorg/modules/libfb.so (fbPolyLine+0x72) [0xe648d2] + 6: /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/intel_drv.so (0xb69000+0x63695) [0xbcc695] + 7: /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/intel_drv.so (0xb69000+0x5c26b) [0xbc526b] + 8: /usr/bin/X (0x8048000+0xda0d8) [0x81220d8] + 9: /usr/bin/X (0x8048000+0x2860b) [0x807060b] + 10: /usr/bin/X (0x8048000+0x2a477) [0x8072477] + 11: /usr/bin/X (0x8048000+0x1ed7a) [0x8066d7a] + 12: /lib/tls/i686/cmov/libc.so.6 (__libc_start_main+0xe6) [0x275bd6] + 13: /usr/bin/X (0x8048000+0x1e961) [0x8066961] + Segmentation fault at address 0xb5f64ffc + + Caught signal 11 (Segmentation fault). [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 588549] Re: [gm45] Xorg crash when idle: Failed to map batchbuffer: Cannot allocate memory
Yeah, all of the X error messages are just generic errors that mean the system ran out of memory. Some other gui app was probably leaking memory badly. The xserver in Lucid has poor low-memory-condition handling, so will crash in those situations, but the underlying problem is going to be something else. Fwiw, I put in several memory-starvation fixes into xserver subsequent to Lucid, but they don't actually fix the problem, they just make X not crash in these situations; your system is still out of memory and other things will certainly fail. Bumping out of the X queue since figuring out what's leaking will take additional sleuth work. ** Package changed: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu) => ubuntu -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/588549 Title: [gm45] Xorg crash when idle: Failed to map batchbuffer: Cannot allocate memory To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/588549/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 427846] Re: Thinkpad T400s laptop dock events not enabling/disabling external display
I still don't know what takes care of listening to kernel dock/undock events in kubuntu, but this is definitely not an X bug. Either the kernel is not propagating the events (unlikely), or kde isn't listening to them. Randomly picking a likely sounding kde package and forwarding it over there. ** Package changed: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu) => kde-baseapps (Ubuntu) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/427846 Title: Thinkpad T400s laptop dock events not enabling/disabling external display To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kde-baseapps/+bug/427846/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 557807] Re: [i865] Offers video resultions not actually supported on Lucid Intel 865G
While i865 is supported on Lucid still, it's not on newer versions of Ubuntu, and so we're not going to be backporting patches for it (except in extraordinarily rare situations where there is a "perfect patch".) We've found that 8xx is fairly fragile and so a patch that fixes an issue on one 8xx card can have a high risk of breaking some other slight variant of the same card. ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed => Won't Fix -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/557807 Title: [i865] Offers video resultions not actually supported on Lucid Intel 865G To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/557807/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 798868] Re: unity video tearing when moving windows in oneiric with nvidia-current
Hard to tell if it's the same effect as in original posting, but the description of Reid Kaufman, Nate Wiebe fits best. Good and smooth desktop performance only moving windows around is like slow-mo. Windows lagging behind mouse cursor when being moved about 1-2 seconds (resizing as well) - smooth non flickering, but way too slow. I installed a fresh oneiric ubuntu 11.10 on my netbook Samsung NC10 with intel graphic (OK, no probs) and on my desktop with onboard nVidia 8300 (slow window movement here!). Out of frustration after "nvidia-current" and "current with updates" and most recent from nvidia website in combination with vsync on/off, tripplebuffer tricks a.s.o. didn't work I finally switched both machines to Lubuntu 11.10. Everything OK on both machines because no compositing on desktop by default. As I wanted some eyecandy I installed xcompmgr on both machines with just shadows attached to my windows: the effect is back on my nvidia- machine just like on ubuntu/unity! So I suppose it's not unity but nvidia + compositing (+ current xorg- version-of ubuntu?) I have no idea where to search nor what to post to help to find a solution to this. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/798868 Title: unity video tearing when moving windows in oneiric with nvidia-current To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/798868/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 897186] [NEW] [i915] Dell 6410 After upgrading from 11.04 to 11.10 Does not detect all LCD resolutions
Public bug reported: I have a Dell Lattitude E6410 which was running 11.04 and detected all LCD panel resolutions. This was not the case when 11.04 was first released but a subsequent update enabled all resolutions to be recognised. I upgraded to 11.10 and now only see a single LCD screen resolution recognised (1440x900) As a workaround I can add the resolutions in uisng xrandr and this works OK but we should get 11.10 resolutions working as they did with 11.04.
