mandriva patches against xdm 1.1.8

XDM lacks consolekit support. This results in various problem when XDM
is used to login into desktop: for example, DBus messages are blocked by
PolicyKit.

I found a set of patches from KDM adapted to XDM in Mandriva SRPMS, but
I wonder why they are not upstreamed.

CCing SUSE and Mandriva Xdm maintainers.

None that I know of. But I am afraid I don't understand consolekit
very well. I did the patch upon request, based on kde3 kdm's patches.

But I was told it is working correctly.

While I don't understand what all the changes in those patches are for,
I do understand the GPLv2 header in the new consolekit files - X.Org does
not accept any GPL licensed code in our apps, so these patches will not
be acceptable until relicensed under an MIT-style license.

From a technical standpoint:
- 0004-Support-kdm-extended-syntax-to-reserve-a-server-for.patch
   - is this really needed for consolekit? This seems unrelated.

-0005-Initialize-the-greeter-only-after-checking-if-the-th.patch
   - seems reasonable, though I wonder about side-effects in people's
setup scripts, if any assumed the xdm greeter window was displayed first

-0006-Ass-console-kit-support-to-xdm.patch
   - I might make this a bit less #ifdef heavy, but it seems okay

-consolekit-xdm/0007-Add-files-required-by-consolekit-support.patch
   - I don't know enough dbus or consolekit to comment on most of this
   - The /proc/%d/stat section would need to be #ifdef linux

Untrue as both ArchLinux and Gentoo are carrying custom patch to enable
native ConsoleKit support in XDM too.

Can we reopen this bug, please?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 923285] [NEW] X freeze with nouveu when doing intensive tasks

2012-01-29 Thread Ayke van Laethem
Public bug reported:

When doing certain tasks, X freezes when nouveau is in use. (nvidia is
not used, I know that because switching to a tty is fast and the tty has
the right font size). This happens maybe one or two times a day when
doing certain tasks. This time I changed the display settings in
xfce4-display settings: rotation from 'normal' to 'left' (just to try
what would happen). Also starting Opera sometimes causes the system to
freeze (Opera uses hardware acceleration AFAIK). It also happens
sometimes that revealing the launcher in Unity causes the system to
freeze.

Symptoms:
 * Mouse still works, but clicking has no effect
 * keyboard doesn't work, not even the Caps Lock key. Switching to another TTY
thus doen't work
 * I can log in via SSH, although that is very slow. This way I have collected
the bug information (via apport-cli -f)
 * It happens in both Unity and XFCE with Compiz enabled.

Note: I first used Nvidia but found it buggy (redraw glitches, font in
tty too big etc.). Then I switched to nouveau and that caused freezes.
Then back to Nvidia and again to nouveau (by removing the nvidia-
current-updates package). The propriteary drives don't crash for me. I
haven't installed libgl1-mesa-dri-experimental.

The partial workaround from Damiön works as expected on a Macbook Air

Is there any way to enable the laptop monitor too and use xinerama?

I would spend a weekend working on this but I do not have the time. I'm
all out of weekends to blow for the next month or two.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 493645] Re: [G84 8600M GT] Xorg has default screen blanking value set to 600secs

2012-01-29 Thread LiSrt
Using XFCE on Oneiric 11.10 this bug still affects me - extremely
annoying when watching movies.

I've fixed this on previous installs (when there was still an
xorg.conf), but given that screensavers can be configured separately, it
would be nice if this particular part of X could be disabled by default.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 570151] Re: mouse stuck jumping between screens

2012-01-29 Thread Peter Jakobi
I'm not entirely certain if this was the actual fix to this multi-head issue
for me
(nvidia, twinview, 2nd head on the right rotated and panning, nvidia
propritary driver, lucid),
as this was a quite a while ago.

However the most significant changes I did back then, was switching to the
xorg-edgers-ppa and ubuntu-x-swat-x-updates ppas and updating *all* apps.

I'm currently using:
xserver-xorg-core 2:1.8.2+git20100705+server-1.8
nvidia-current290.10-0ubuntu1~lucid~xup1

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 923421] [NEW] When any application accesses tv card the display resets to login.

2012-01-29 Thread Salane
Public bug reported:

lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu precise (development branch)

  Version table:

This is fresh upgrade from oniric to precice. The Oniric install had no
problems running tvtime mplayer or vlc. Whenever any of these application
accesses the tvcard using fglrx drivers the display crashes to login. For
example if I start tvime, the application opens normally but then switches to
fullscreen and then immediately closes. This occurs even if I run with a -M
switch which instructs tvtime to run in window.
This does not occur with the radeon/mesa drivers. I tried both the
fglrx:2:8.911-0ubuntu2 and built from installer package fglrx:2:8.930-0ubuntu1.
This did not occur with previous version of xorg prior to earlier in the week.

this leaves a proper /root/xorg.conf.new, but tools such as ltsp

correctly.

proposed solution:
change this error to a warning since a proper working config is generated
anyway.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 912992]

2012-01-29 Thread Stephen Rees-Carter
I've tested and I still need the 'noapic' flag to successfully boot.

Can someone point me in the right direction to get this one fixed?
I will update my launchpad bug
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/903558) with fresh
details regarding this issue - but I don't know if it's in the right place to
be noticed.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 912992]

2012-01-29 Thread Stephen Rees-Carter
I have just upgraded my Kernel and the primary laptop monitor now loads up on
boot without any issues!
I still need to test the 'noapic' flag to see if it has been fixed too, but the
important thing is, I can now use my laptop as a laptop :)

Do you still want all that debugging information, or should I not worry
since it's now working?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 838577] Re: GNOME Shell display problems with FGLRX

2012-01-29 Thread Steffen Sindzinski
The new driver version 12-1 available from
http://support.amd.com/us/Pages/AMDSupportHub.aspx finally fixed it for
my notebook with HD4650. All animations and so are fast and smooth. For
installation you will need to download the package from the site above.

The following steps only work if you were using the fglrx before!

At my system 2 additionally packages were needed:
sudo apt-get install execstack dh-modaliases

go to your download folder:
cd Downloads

generate the Debs:
sh ati-driver-installer-12-1-x86.x86_64.run --buildpkg

install the Debs:
sudo dpkg -i fglrx*.deb

listed below.

What I did was log-off and restart my computer, then opened dash home. I
am not sure if Unity is the culprit, just adding to this report.
