[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 998308] [NEW] invisible mouse cursor in 12.04

2012-05-14 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Issue
---
12.04 64 bit Installation finished successfully with no errors. But nether
login screen nor default desktop have mouse cursor. Mouse works but cursor
pointer is completely invisible. However cursor shows up for little moment
while in transition from login screen to desktop.

Facts
---
- default config for gnome - Tried both upgrade from 10.04.04 to 12.04 and
fresh install of 12.04 from alternate.iso. Exactly same look with no cursor.
- video drv ok - I use AST driver that manufacture validated with 12.04. Indeed
there is no errors in X server log and it uses driver provided by AST.
- no hw issues - hw in use cpu E5520 chip-set X58. Was working fine with ubuntu
10.04 for years with no issues at all.
- no errors in X server log
I see that combination of lightdm and unity-greeter is used but can not find
error in log.
What program is responsible to draw mouse cursor on default desktop in 12.04,
how to narrow the issue?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 64bit completely freezes frequently

2012-05-14 Thread Hein
Yesterday I did test run Ubuntu 12.04 32 bit from CD without any updates
or closed source drivers. That went perfectly well: no hanging system,
good performance. I'd love to install 12.04 32 bit and see how it does
after taking the closed source nvidia drivers and updates, but I'm
affraid I have an completely useless system once again.

Problems with 64 bit version were also not there when test driving it
from CD as far as I can remember. Has anybody tried to test his/her
system with a clean install without updates and then adding the updates
one by one? This could track down which update breaks 12.04 (if it is
related to updates installed after installation as I suspect). If we
know which update breaks Ubuntu it should be a bit easier to track down
the problem!?

Unfortunately I will not be able to test this in the coming 4 to 5 days.

Bug already scores 180 points but it seems we are still left alone by
the developers.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 982485] Re: [regression] Nvidia 295.40: Unity 3D does not work at all with the new nvidia driver

2012-05-14 Thread Wal
Hi Madbiologist, I downloaded and installed the 295.49 driver from
launchpad see post #152. Mine is running perfectly. I am running Ubuntu
12.04 with a Nvidia Geforce 7100 Graphics Card. I did not bother
downloading from proposed as I already had a working driver.

Not sure if you are just checking to see if the new update works or if
you have downloaded it from proposed and found it doesn't work. If you
have done the latter. Uninstall the previous driver then install 295.49.
Hope this helps.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 999056] [NEW] REGRESSION: 1920x1080 (standard HDTV) resolution with Intel graphics not working any more

2012-05-14 Thread Till Kamppeter
Public bug reported:

I have an Eizo EV2333WH-BK 23 monitor with 1920x1080 (16:9) as its
native resolution and a motherboard with built-in Intel 82G965 graphics
chipset. The monitor is connected via VGA cable.

This worked perfectly with Ubuntu Oneiric.

On Precise automatic installation chooses 1680x1050 (16:10) which is
once not the native resolution of the monitor and second, not the
correct aspect ratio. If I open the Displays part of the System
Settings and choose 1920x1080 (16:9) manually, the GPU crashes with a
completely messed up image and no possibility to stop this by switching
to a text console. The computer actually switches on Ctrl+Alt+F1 (as a
subsequent Ctrl+Alt+Del works) but the console does not get visible. The
image does not change. Only rebooting via Ctrl+Alt+F1 and Ctrl+Alt+Del
works and the display only gets correct after the complete shutdown when
the PC returns into the BIOS.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 999109] [NEW] complete freeze of Ubuntu after some time

2012-05-14 Thread Jonas Platte
Public bug reported:

Since I upgraded to 12.10, my computer freezes randomly after some time. If I
play Minecraft, it freezes after mac. 30min, if I use my computer normally it
only freezes after 1 hour or more. I think it never happened if I used Gnome or
Unity 2D (if I didn't play Minecraft there).
I can't use the mouse or get into the console with Ctrl+Alt+F1, so I have to
manually reboot the computer every time it freezes.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 982485] Re: [regression] Nvidia 295.40: Unity 3D does not work at all with the new nvidia driver

2012-05-14 Thread Felipe Augusto Araujo Dias
Mine is working again. I have Nvidia Geforce Go 6150 integrated graphics inside
a Compaq Presario V3000.
When -proposed was released, I first uninstalled nvidia-current and installed
nvidia-current-update (295.49) from -proposed. It worked fine. So, when the
nvidia-current 295.49 driver was finally released, I uninstalled
nvidia-current-update and reinstalled nvidia-current, not without running
apt-get update first.

For those who are still having unity2D being loaded, I know it may sound
silly but... have you checked if Unity3D is selected as the main
session? I've done this mistake a thousand times myself, checking
unity2D whenever I had a problem with 3D and always forgetting to change
it back when a fix was released.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 995013] Re: Xorg freeze after lid closed/opened (screen turned off/on) several times

2012-05-14 Thread Andrew Plummer
I hope this isn't old news, but I've done a little bit of testing and found
that the following lines appeared in my /var/log/Xorg.0.log when this freeze
occured:
[ 4255.536] (WW) intel(0): flip queue failed: Invalid argument
[ 4255.536] (WW) intel(0): Page flip failed: Invalid argument

I understand that the numbers in square brackets are timestamps of
number of seconds since boot. I haven't found a simple way of converting
these to human readable times (knowledge of the 'date' command clearly
lacking) but at any rate, a google of these lines lead me to comments 30
and 38 on bug 966744 which seems to suggest that these two bugs are at
least related if not actual duplicates.

Can anyone confirm that these line are appearing in their Xorg.0.log (if
viewing in during a freeze using tty) or Xorg.0.log.old after running
'sudo service lightdm restart' and getting back to X (by running: grep
Invalid argument /var/log/Xorg.0.log)?

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu

to be a regular (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.
Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 64bit completely freezes frequently

2012-05-14 Thread Bernhard Siebelmann
I get complete freezes running Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit on an Intel Ivy
Bridge machine with integrated graphics.

For me, one way to induce a freeze is to randomly drag the map in Google
Maps, both in Firefox and Chromium. The freeze will occur within a few
seconds of dragging. This happens in Unity 3D as well as Gnome Shell,
Unity 2D seems to be stable. I suppose this is a 3D-only issue.

When running Unity 3D from a live USB stick I can not reproduce any
complete freezes with the map-dragging method, but Firefox freezes for a
short time every few seconds. Sometimes the window turns dark. However,
the mouse is movable the whole time.

When I make a fresh install as suggested by Hein (#51) the freezes are
back, which is why I assume that the problem is not introduced by an
update.

Many of you seem to use mobile or integrated graphics. Might this be a
problem with shared memory?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 999141] [NEW] Dual monitor DisplayPort stopped working.

2012-05-14 Thread Julius Thor
Public bug reported:

After I updated today using Update-Manager I can no longer use my
secondary monitor which is connected via DisplayPort. This was a problem
a few months ago and it seems to have creeped back into ubuntu? I used
to use VGA while this was a problem and I have reverted back to that
workaround. The image is considerably worse so I hope whatever broke the
DisplayPort code gets reverted back.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 997858] Re: Plugging TV by HDMI

2012-05-14 Thread Marc Deslauriers
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a regular (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.
Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 968845] Re: bcm5974 touchpad doesn't work after S3 on MacBookAir

2012-05-14 Thread Luke Hoersten
Chase, I did both to confirm. The test I use is the network manager's
connect to hidden network and then the dropdown to select previously
connected to hidden networks. First boot it works just fine with
clicking the trackpad as well as tapping. After suspend, clicking always
acts as a double click (effectively opening and closing the dropdown
very quickly) and tapping works just fine. So at least for me, the
problem seems to be isolated to clicking on the trackpad.

I downgraded to 290.10 using the package available here:
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/precise/amd64/nvidia-current/290.10-0ubuntu2
and have not had a crash for a whole day. Previously, it was crashing every
hour or so.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 999191] [NEW] X crashes with gnome-session: Fatal IO error 11

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 907383] Re: Spontaneously eject from the session

2012-05-14 Thread Stepan Roucka
I ran the ubuntu-bug xorg and the output is
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/999191

It started happening after upgrading to ubuntu 12.04. Several times a
day, the gnome session crashes and drops me to GDM. This happens with
Unity and gnome shell. It doesn't happen with unity-2d.

Part of the syslog output:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 940564] Re: [8400m] nvidia-graphics-drivers (295.33-0ubuntu1), is causing failed restarts. shutdowns only a blackscreen on tty's other than tty7

2012-05-14 Thread IgnatiusReilly
I decided to move to the nouveau open driver.
Remove nvidia driver:

sudo apt-get --purge remove nvidia*

and install the open one:

sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-nouveau libdrm-nouveau1a
nouveau-firmware

It works very well (Ubuntu 12.04 Nvidia GeForce Go 8400M GS).
No Xorg crash so far and no shutdown issues.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 936159] Re: Xorg freeze, radeon gpu lockup with softreset

2012-05-14 Thread Ernst Sjöstrand
I can no longer reproduce this with latest xorg-edgers! Xorg-edgers
hadn't been updated in a while and then there was a big push around 2nd
or 4th May, and that solved it. I did not update the kernel when this
stopped happening, so the fix seems to be in userspace. No idea what to
backport...

update, but after running on-line updates it stalls after Greeter log-

If I choose 'Recovery mode' then 'resume normal boot' it comes up OKish (like
now) but lacks video driver at low res (should be 1440x900, but 1024x768 etc
is all I am offered).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 64bit completely freezes frequently

2012-05-14 Thread Brendan Brigham
I agree, 3d may be the issue. I have a Nvidia graphics card I'm running
from and have been testing on 2d for 2 days now, I haven't been able to
reproduce the freeze. Although I can't stand the 2d environment, it is
stable so far, not one problem. Hopefully some developers notice this
;-)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 980017] Re: [i965gm] GPU lockup render.IPEHR: 0x02000004

2012-05-14 Thread Bryce Harrington
** Description changed:

- Machine sporatically locks up while running compiz.
+ [Impact]
+ Lockup several times a day preceded by corruption, started immediately after
upgrading to precise on 1st April. Does not occur with Unity 2D. Seems to be
more frequently triggered when using the Unity 3D application switcher.
+
+ Bug is believed to be specific to gen4 hardware (e.g. i965).
+
+ [Development Fix]
+ Fixed upstream, and backported to the 8.0 stable branch.
+ This fix was cherrypicked and is uploaded to Quantal.
+
+ The patch essentially moves a chunk of code to be executed only after
+ the start of drawing. This chunk of code creates a single-level miptree
+ for rendering to as a workaround for a gen4-specific limitation. The
+ problem is that this was causing some code to use the renderbuffer's
+ contents before it was actually ready to be used (thus the glitches).
+
+ [Stable Fix]
+ Since the same version of mesa is (currently) in Precise as in Quantal, the
same patch can be used.
+
+ [Test Case]
+ 1. On affected i965 systems,
+ 2. boot into Unity 3d
+ 3. Repeatedly use application switching, open and close windows, etc.
+ 4. Should see the described bug in the course of 1 day of such testing
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+ The patch is on the large side, which can be a bit worrying, but the changes
are essentially just shifting code from one area to another. On the plus side,
the patch has been carried in the upstream tree and the upstream stable branch
for a number of months now.
+
+ The chunk of code appears to be limited to execution only on certain
+ hardware. It tests for certain missing features which I gather only
+ occur on certain i965 hardware. So, if there were a regression, the
+ scope of the regression would be limited to just that class of hardware.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 973096] Re: Nvidia driver causes xorg crash

2012-05-14 Thread Reason
This issue should be assigned to someone by now and he/she should be working
round the clock to fix this, there are litterally millions of pc's using nVidia
hardware which all potentially have this bug.
People are loosing work because of this and it really pisses them off!
I've lost hours of work aswell, which results in litterally throwhing money
down the drain.

Make this top priority it's been open for a month now!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 973096] Re: Nvidia driver causes xorg crash

2012-05-14 Thread Victor
@nosaer82 I could not agree more with you, it make the distribution
useless!

I personally updated to 302.07, but it stills happends (but less
frequently, or maybe I just stopped using flash/video)

There may be a solution here:
http://techcat.brainfull.net/?p=835 (spanish)

The suggested solution is to add the following ppa:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates
sudo apt-get update

Then force the version 295.40 in synaptic.

2012-05-14 Thread Michael
the problem is, how to debug this bug ?!
the machine freezes completely, no mouse or keyboard response.
no chance to switch tty1, tty2 ... Magic SysRq also not working... the machine
is completely death :(

unity-2d works fine, but unity/compiz is prettier.

machine specs:
os: ubuntu 12.04 , 64bit
cpu + gpu: Intel i5-3570K CPU
mainboard: Gigabyte Z77M-D3H (F6 BIOS)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 64bit completely freezes frequently

2012-05-14 Thread Daniel Ferradal
A question to everyone.

Which network card are you using to connect to internet?

I have a:
06:00.0 Network controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR9227 Wireless Network
Adapter (rev 01)

which is used by the ATH9K driver.

I have tried Linux mint 12, Debian stable and I have had freezes in all
so I bet it is a certain driver screwing but in my case it is making no
sense already. Thing is with Debian I have had the freeze after
installing just when I was connecting to my wireless for the first time.

Are you guys using the ath9k driver or am I going nuts?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 64bit completely freezes frequently

2012-05-14 Thread Trevor Bradley
This is obviously at least 2 or 3 different problems. My problems seem
to have cleared up after upgrading to NVIDIA's 295.49 drivers. My SysRq
key continued to work even under massive lockup.

Most of us experienced common symptoms: A near complete system freeze
with mouse continuing to work implies a unity3d or compiz problem in
some way. The only log entries I had that are suggestive any way are
likely symptoms of the lockup and system loads in the 40+ range.

I think what a lot of us want is guidance as to how to help diagnose a
system that's locked up or going to lock up in this way. If there were
only a Magic SysRq key that replied back with which process is causing
the system to go to hell.

I'd reccomend going to a text-console and letting top run constantly.
If the system starts getting sluggish you can switch back to the console
and see what's sucking up all the CPU/IO time.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 999326] [NEW] graphics display error

2012-05-14 Thread Halvor
Public bug reported:

I'm not a technical person. I've recently upgraded to 12.04 Then shortly
after that I couldn't play videos. The players would either crash or not
display the video, only the audio. I've filed two bug reports for vlc
without getting anywhere so far. Now I just ran checkbox-gtk and I was
told that the graphics deisplay test failed. Hopefully there lies the
problem for all my recent system troubles.

I'd like to mention one more symptom. Since this error thing appeared
sometimes all cpu is used, which is not normal at all even though I have
a very weak cpu. Xorg alone would consume 40% of the cpu.

That's all I can think of. I suppose you will be able to locate the two
previously filed vlc bug reports since there were some attachments to
those that you might want to look into,

Let me know if I need to do anything else. Perhaps this is a hardware
error and there's nothing you can do (and no problem related to
ubuntu/xubuntu),
