[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently while watching videos (Fixed by 3.3.6 kernel)

2012-06-02 Thread Ben Thornton
The logs I submitted earlier are from a system that I can confirm has
this bug. A few minutes ago, the bug occurred a few seconds after
launching a DIVX-encoded AVI in VLC. I could still move the mouse
cursor, but the rest of the screen became totally unresponsive. I could
still log into the machine via SSH. Killing the X process works: the DE
restarts and I can continue using the system without rebooting.

2012-06-02 Thread Bryce Harrington
Based on the past few comments, this does indeed appear to be an amalgam
of different issues, none of which are properly reported so this is not
actionable.

See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/Freeze for guidance on how
to properly diagnose and report gpu lockup bugs.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 992175] Re: crashed [whatever] fixes problems with screen brightness steps

2012-06-02 Thread Bzzz
Maybe kded4 has something to do with it. As described in bug #1007464,
brightness control was working as it should, but other things were
wrong. After killall kded4 and restarting it, some of these things were
fixed BUT brightness control via hardware keys is now broken again.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently while watching videos (Fixed by 3.3.6 kernel)

2012-06-02 Thread M
Thanks Bryce! You've taught me to trust the community more than the
experts. #91 Michael (starkpc) fixed one problem by recommending
upgrading to a newer kernel to fix Ivy Bridge graphics lockups. Had I
encountered this bug a week later than I did, I'd have run out of time
and returned my brand new motherboard and CPU to the manufacturer and
possibly given up on Ubuntu 12.04. Michael, you're my favorite
community member right now!

To those who encounter lock ups where you can still move the mouse or
access the terminal, or you're using graphics other than onboard Intel,
stay strong! A kernel upgrade might not fix your issue, but at least
you know that others share your troubles and a fix should surely be in
the works!

Since this bug report is an amalgam of different issues, some of which
have been fixed, I encourage users to ignore the current status and read
through all the posts. The Won't Fix status is patently false for
those of us whose systems have been completely fixed by the advice of
the commenters.

Bryce, I hope your common sense returns and allows you to point users of
modern hardware to easy fixes instead of insisting that their adoption
of Ubuntu was a mistake. These bug reports are not just for developers.
Please return this bug to the previous status to alert users that there
are possible fixes to their problems.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 948053] Re: nvidia-96 and nvidia-173 uninstallable on Precise

2012-06-02 Thread Bib
For those having issues with nouveau, I discovered on a clean
oneiric-precise install (because of unavailable non-pae liveCd), that
my issues with nouveau had disapeard, beautiful screen, clean cursor
etc..., although poor perfs... I don't know how this happened, but after
checking I learnt the driver used is vesa ! I don't know how to use vesa
on my ugly system. A pity precise follows the win7 not supporting these
~old cards (mine V28).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 914631] Re: [mir] mesa-demos

2012-06-02 Thread adempewolff
I would just like to add that I've observed (on Ask Ubuntu, for example
see this recent one: http://askubuntu.com/questions/145439/enabling-
gtx-570) a number of new users--mostly Windows converts--who see the
Unkown in System Settings and, assuming that this means the card
isn't recognized, break their systems trying to fix this non-problem by
uninstalling the working drivers/installing the wrong drivers/etc.
Although in theory this is a trivial bug, we might want to consider this
side-effect that is occurring in practice when determining the urgency
of this bug.

I guess it's the samme issue. and i run gnome 3 so clearly it's not an
issue with unity. my guess is it's either an issue with the kernel
driver or mesa. maintainers should check upstream for fixes.

relevant thing in common is that they both use USB/Bluetooth keyboards.
Another install on a laptop does not exhibit this problem of wrong
keyboard layout. Simplest work-around so far is setxkbmap no after

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 949641] Re: Installing both fglrx and fglrx-updates results in: error exit status 1 -/etc/init.d/atieventsd exists during rc.d purge

2012-06-02 Thread Viktoria S.
Hi!

I have fully updated xubuntu 12.04 64bit and ATI Mobility Radeon HD
5470. I have installed via Jockey the ATI driver (normal version, not
the post release one). The installation went well, it intalled the
driver, but I have noticed in synaptic that the package fglrx-updates is
in the not installed residual config state. I guess that is not normal.
If you need some logs or any other information please let me know.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 943104] Re: recipient address: comma inserted when pressing AltGr

2012-06-02 Thread Sandra Farnedi
I do NOT agree with expiring this bug. The problem is still present.
Easy to reproduce: italian keyboard, press AltGr key and you get ,
(comma followed by a blank character), in the text fields To:, Cc:,
Bcc: as again showed in the attached screen shot. Note that using an
italian keyboard the @ character is obtained pressing AltGr+ò key.

This kernel has been tested in other bug which should be identical with
this issue for a while.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-
intel/+bug/974830

And it fixes GPU lockup in several java applications. Probably this is
the same issue but at least they seem to relate. I will be glad if you
apply this patch to the main kernel release.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 943104] Re: recipient address: comma inserted when pressing AltGr

2012-06-02 Thread MadFranky
Same behaviour on Swiss keyboard (CH-fr), where the @ character is
obtained by pressing AltGr + 2.

What's interesting: if pressed as first character in the blank To, CC or BCC
field, then AltGR +2 gives a @, correctly.
However, if anything precedes (as in case of an e-mail address, a comma
followed by a blank space appear as soon as the AltGr key is pressed.

2012-06-02 Thread Andrey Gelman
Hi !
I'm not so sure this is a Nouveau issue ...
I actually use a proprietary NVidia driver. The

'xserver-xorg-video-nouveau'

was merely a left-over after installing the NVidia driver. I have
removed it, however the problem persists.
Pay attention, we have no sign of this in other applications, including
the gnome-terminal.
Thanks,
Andrey.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 976863] Re: Ubuntu Precise (and other versions up to Natty Narwhal) can't identify correct monitor resolution

2012-06-02 Thread KushalSharma
Even though there may be a resolution a user can perform, shouldn't this
be slated for fixing so that it just works out-of-the-box in any of the
upcoming updates or even the next version? In that case, should this be
closed?

P.S.: I haven't applied that resolution yet so I don't know if it works.
Unfortunately, I had to give away my monitors when I moved cities, so I
was unable to do the testing. Sorry about that.

2012-06-02 Thread Bob Bib
xserver-xorg-input-synaptics 1.6.0-0ubuntu1~precise1

The touchpad began to work decently.
With multiple X sessions opened, after switching from one to another, the
pointer becomes responsive in less than 5 seconds.

I think it's fixed as for now; reopen the bug if you still experience a
problematic touchpad behaviour.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 966744] Re: Resume from suspend leaves me with black screen or a screen of the desktop before it suspended (though the mouse still moves/changes cursor)

2012-06-02 Thread David MacBride
I think I've reproduced this same error, though the scenario is slightly
different:

System Info
- Lenovo thinkpad X200 notebook
- Intel GM45 Express graphics
- Ubuntu 12.04 32bit (x86-32). up-to-date as of June 2 / 2012

Steps to reproduce
- set setting when the lid is closed=do nothing in Power settings
- set Lock to On in Brightness and Lock settings
- check Require my password when waking from suspend in Brightness and Lock
settings
- close the lid
- open the lid

expected results: I see the log in dialog

actual result: backlit but dark screen, mouse cursor still moves as
normal, mouse cursor changes as I move it around the screen as if it is
responding to diff't UI elements. Occasionally the display is
different: instead of blank/black screen other windows are visible,
such as the dock and the top panel... but when that happens I cannot
interact with them.

The issue is intermittent. Cannot be reproduced all the time.

Gut feeling: the windows that are supposed to be drawn when the
computer is locked eg: when just the wallpaper and the login dialog are
supposed to be visible) are for some reason not rendered at the front,
though they are the 'active' windows (I'm not an X programmer so I'm not
sure of the right X terminology).

I don't recall this being an issue on either of 11.04 or 11.10.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently while watching videos (Fixed by 3.3.6 kernel)

2012-06-02 Thread pureblood
Since the bug many people are experiencing is related to hard freezes
where you *cannot* move the mouse anymore or ssh the machine, maybe a
new bug should be opened with these directions in the title, and then
people should be directed from this thread to that thread instead. I
confirm that I am still experiencing this issue with kernel
3.4.0-030400-generic, that there is no obvious trigger (most of the
times it happens while the computer is on at night or while I am at work
and nobody is using it), that it happened with KDE as well as Unity. I
have a new Vostro V131 which, I believe, is a Sandy bridge(?). Are most
of the people with *this* version of the bug running Intel systems with
integrated graphic card? I would like to understand what we have in
common. It would be a first step.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently while watching videos (Fixed by 3.3.6 kernel)

2012-06-02 Thread yurx cherio
I have Nehalem Lynnfield i7 860 + nvidia GeForce GT 220.
My freezes occur when running either Unity 3D or 2D (64amd). Freezes persist
after upgrading to 3.3.6, 3.3.7 and 3.4.

Originally I was suspecting different culprit applications e.g. Chrome,
VirtualBox, Eclipse IDE, Totem player, etc but later I experienced
freezes when these applications were not running.

At the office I have a workstation withe SAME hardware configuration
(including nvidia model and drivers) which runs XFCE and it doesn't
freeze which points to Unity/Compiz as a potential culprit.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1007690] Re: Dialog after Your screen is running in low-graphics-mode not accessable without mouse

2012-06-02 Thread Matt Fischer
This is simple to reproduce by editing lightdm.conf and setting greeter-
session= to something made-up, like greeter-session=foo and then
restarting lightdm with sudo initctl restart lightdm.
