[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently while watching videos (Fixed by 3.3.6 kernel)
The logs I submitted earlier are from a system that I can confirm has this bug. A few minutes ago, the bug occurred a few seconds after launching a DIVX-encoded AVI in VLC. I could still move the mouse cursor, but the rest of the screen became totally unresponsive. I could still log into the machine via SSH. Killing the X process works: the DE restarts and I can continue using the system without rebooting. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/993187 Title: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently while watching videos (Fixed by 3.3.6 kernel) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/993187/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently while watching videos (Fixed by 3.3.6 kernel)
Thanks Bryce! You've taught me to trust the community more than the experts. #91 Michael (starkpc) fixed one problem by recommending upgrading to a newer kernel to fix Ivy Bridge graphics lockups. Had I encountered this bug a week later than I did, I'd have run out of time and returned my brand new motherboard and CPU to the manufacturer and possibly given up on Ubuntu 12.04. Michael, you're my favorite community member right now! To those who encounter lock ups where you can still move the mouse or access the terminal, or you're using graphics other than onboard Intel, stay strong! A kernel upgrade might not fix your issue, but at least you know that others share your troubles and a fix should surely be in the works! Since this bug report is an amalgam of different issues, some of which have been fixed, I encourage users to ignore the current status and read through all the posts. The Won't Fix status is patently false for those of us whose systems have been completely fixed by the advice of the commenters. Bryce, I hope your common sense returns and allows you to point users of modern hardware to easy fixes instead of insisting that their adoption of Ubuntu was a mistake. These bug reports are not just for developers. Please return this bug to the previous status to alert users that there are possible fixes to their problems.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 914631] Re: [mir] mesa-demos
I would just like to add that I've observed (on Ask Ubuntu, for example see this recent one: http://askubuntu.com/questions/145439/enabling- gtx-570) a number of new users--mostly Windows converts--who see the Unkown in System Settings and, assuming that this means the card isn't recognized, break their systems trying to fix this non-problem by uninstalling the working drivers/installing the wrong drivers/etc. Although in theory this is a trivial bug, we might want to consider this side-effect that is occurring in practice when determining the urgency of this bug. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to mesa-demos in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/914631 Title: [mir] mesa-demos To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mesa-demos/+bug/914631/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

Hi ! I'm not so sure this is a Nouveau issue ... I actually use a proprietary NVidia driver. The 'xserver-xorg-video-nouveau' was merely a left-over after installing the NVidia driver. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 976863] Re: Ubuntu Precise (and other versions up to Natty Narwhal) can't identify correct monitor resolution
Even though there may be a resolution a user can perform, shouldn't this be slated for fixing so that it just works out-of-the-box in any of the upcoming updates or even the next version? In that case, should this be closed? P.S.: I haven't applied that resolution yet so I don't know if it works. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 966744] Re: Resume from suspend leaves me with black screen or a screen of the desktop before it suspended (though the mouse still moves/changes cursor)
I think I've reproduced this same error, though the scenario is slightly different: System Info - Lenovo thinkpad X200 notebook - Intel GM45 Express graphics - Ubuntu 12.04 32bit (x86-32). up-to-date as of June 2 / 2012 Steps to reproduce - set setting when the lid is closed=do nothing in Power settings - set Lock to On in Brightness and Lock settings - check Require my password when waking from suspend in Brightness and Lock settings - close the lid - open the lid expected results: I see the log in dialog actual result: backlit but dark screen, mouse cursor still moves as normal, mouse cursor changes as I move it around the screen as if it is responding to diff't UI elements. Occasionally the display is different: instead of blank/black screen other windows are visible, such as the dock and the top panel... but when that happens I cannot interact with them. The issue is intermittent. Cannot be reproduced all the time. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently while watching videos (Fixed by 3.3.6 kernel)
Since the bug many people are experiencing is related to hard freezes where you *cannot* move the mouse anymore or ssh the machine, maybe a new bug should be opened with these directions in the title, and then people should be directed from this thread to that thread instead. I confirm that I am still experiencing this issue with kernel 3.4.0-030400-generic, that there is no obvious trigger (most of the times it happens while the computer is on at night or while I am at work and nobody is using it), that it happened with KDE as well as Unity. I have a new Vostro V131 which, I believe, is a Sandy bridge(?). Are most of the people with *this* version of the bug running Intel systems with integrated graphic card? I would like to understand what we have in common. It would be a first step. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/993187 Title: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently while watching videos (Fixed by 3.3.6 kernel) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/993187/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently while watching videos (Fixed by 3.3.6 kernel)
I have Nehalem Lynnfield i7 860 + nvidia GeForce GT 220. My freezes occur when running either Unity 3D or 2D (64amd). Freezes persist after upgrading to 3.3.6, 3.3.7 and 3.4. Originally I was suspecting different culprit applications e.g. Chrome, VirtualBox, Eclipse IDE, Totem player, etc but later I experienced freezes when these applications were not running. At the office I have a workstation withe SAME hardware configuration (including nvidia model and drivers) which runs XFCE and it doesn't freeze which points to Unity/Compiz as a potential culprit.
