[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 549727] Re: Touchpad stops working after login

2012-07-10 Thread ethanay
this problem exists on Linux Mint 12 and 13, but for some reason is not
affecting me on Ubuntu 12.04...

unchecking disable touchpad while typing fixes the issue. in order to
avoid accidental clicks, you must also unceck enable mouse clicks with
touchpad and use the purpose-built buttons only :) (are they really
that inconvenient?)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 973096] Re: Nvidia driver causes xorg crash

2012-07-10 Thread Paul Maidment
I continue to experience this bug irrespective of which graphics driver
I have installed. In my case, whenever I am using the keyboard the
system is at risk of a crash. I know this because on this particular
machine, I rarely use the keyboard as it is being used primarily as a
virtualisation server, however, when I use the keyboard, a crash will
happen quite quickly, this seems to be more likely if I have typed a
number key or a period sign.

This machine can stay stable for days, or even weeks provided that the
keyboard is not used.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 921871] Re: Screen frequently distorts randomly

2012-07-10 Thread Mike Kovacevich
Have the same problem with my system (Dell OptiPlex GX520, Intel®
Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz × 2, Graphics Intel® 945G x86/MMX/SSE2, Ubuntu
12.04 LTS). After a clean boot all fine for a while then graphics start
to go wonky. Background image gets pixellated once an app like Firefox
is opened and then closed. Tool tips off the Unity Launchpad strip at
the left are effected i.e. some don't display correctly. In some rare
cases the entire system gets effected and the menu items, etc. can't be
read and a restart is necessary.

Problems only started with the introduction of Unity. Before this the
graphics worked perfectly.

May be related but my system also seems much slower now than 10.10 or
even 11.04.

Really annoying bug that feed the Linux nay-saying machine.

 find them out)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1021924] Re: Multiple Displays not working on Core i7 3770S + Intel DQ77MK motherboard

2012-07-10 Thread Rodney Dawes
Using the 3.5.0-3.3 kernel from the q-lts-backport archive, and xorg
from precise, the system boots and appears usable, but still the same
issue with the second display being 100% red. It also appears the
quantal daily image from today sort of works again, after a few toggles
of the mirror display option, and a few clicks of the apply button, in
the display prefs. Before that toggling, the screen was very fuzzy and
blinky. After a few cycles of that, it settled down to draw appropriate
colors and seemed stable, though the second screen was still 100% red on
today's daily image, as well. So this bug definitely seems to affect
both quantal and precise.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 973096] Re: Nvidia driver causes xorg crash

2012-07-10 Thread Marc Caballero
Hello, this is just to say that I experienced this issu as well. For me,
it is a shame, but the only way I managed to have a normal session
logged in has been to begin using only the onboard graphic card instead
of my Nvidia. In order to do that, I blacklisted all the drivers from
Nvidia.

I know it is a desperate solution but it worked. Hope it helps.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1012774] Re: screenresolution-mechanism.py crashed with ImportError in __main__: No module named XKit

2012-07-10 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Ok, confirmed, the 0.5 x-kit update renamed XKit-xkit, if compatibility
was broken the package should be renamed or use Breaks on all unported
clients, or compatibility must be restored

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1022979] [NEW] Intel i915, dual monitor does not work after login

2012-07-10 Thread Jiří Vyskočil
Public bug reported:

I have gone through a lenghty update from 10.10 to 12.04. The computer
is a laptop with Intel i915 graphics. It is connected to a TV set via
S-Video cable. I want a mirror display setup, which used to work fine in
10.10.

At the login screen, both the internal LCD panel and the TV screen work
as expected.

Both outputs are correctly detected in the Displays configuration
dialog.

After login i get either:
- internal LCD only - if I turn the S-Video monitor off in the Displays tool
- TV output only - if I select any other configuration (ie. TV only, both on
with mirror, both on without mirror)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 573295] Re: Only eraser works on Wacom USB PenPartner in lucid

2012-07-10 Thread Doug Brown
For anybody who's interested, I'm no longer seeing this bug in 12.04. (I
still was in 11.10, though). So it looks like something in 12.04 fixed
it...

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1023075] [NEW] Brigthness and Graphics Support not available

2012-07-10 Thread Alvin Caralos
Public bug reported:

I can't adjust the brightness and my laptop turns really hot. I try
installing nvidia-current but what it just did was change the resolution
of my laptop to 800X600, so what i did to change it back was to delete
the xorg.conf in the /etc/X11 directory and uninstall nvidia-current and
nvidia-settings. I also try installing the driver that i downloaded from
nvidia website(NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-295.59) and still got the same
problem and again i uninstall it but using the command nvidia-
uninstaller. My major problem here is that i dont have a driver or I
installed it but doesn't working that manages my nvidia GEFORCE GT540M
graphics card that is why even if i'm just browsing my computer turns
hot that it will automaitcally shutdown. Please help and thank you in
advance.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2012-07-10 Thread Michael Helsvig
After the upgrade from 11.10 to 12.04, I have daily freezes for no
apparent reason; One freeze can come after a fresh boot with no open
programs - and another freeze can come five hours after working with
many programs. There is never a single action, that causes a freeze.
What is causing this? How is that even possible? I have never had any
problems like this in any version of Ubuntu on the same hardware. Every
freeze is a complete lock up of the system with sudden squared garbage
all over the screen. Not even the mouse nor keyboard responds. I have
not been able to find any errors, prior to a freeze, in the system log.
Could it be related to the encrypted file system option (eCryptfs)?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1019444] Re: Update Precise to mesa 8.0.3 (bugfix release)

2012-07-10 Thread Bryce Harrington
** Description changed:

  [Impact]
Fixes graphics corruption, application crashes, and xserver crashes across a
wide array of hardware. Several of these issues have been reported against
mesa. Others are likely affecting users but they don't realize it's mesa at
fault so we haven't seen their bug reports.

As per the release notes (http://www.mesa3d.org/relnotes-8.0.3.html)
this release contains over 20 bug fixes. Some of those are fixes to
make tests pass or fix build issues and may or may not be actually
relevant to end users. At least two bugs (#952896 and #988343) reported
in Launchpad. Others fix corruption issues and xserver crashes seen
while running games, memory leaks, and swrast problems.

Of particular note, this includes fixes for GPU hangs in 3D
functionality. We've had numerous reports of Intel hangs that are
difficult for users to reliably reproduce, and it's my hope these fixes
will help alleviate some of those hangs.

-
  [Development Fix]
8.0.3 was uploaded to Quantal prior to Alpha-2. So far no complaints have
been spotted attributable to this change.

+ Upstream has released 8.0.4 on July 10, which includes further bug and
+ test fixes, and may be worth a followup SRU once it has had some time in
+ testing. Looking through its changes I did not spot patches obviously
+ labeled as fixes to any regressions brought in by 8.0.3, meaning that
+ 8.0.3 is likely safe to put into precise now, and leave 8.0.4 for the
+ future since it includes a number of code refactorings and other tersely
+ documented changes that should receive review and testing before rolling
+ out.
+
  [Stable Fix]
- What's in quantal is basically just the update from 8.0.2 to 8.0.3 and two
other patches, for bugs #968284 and #981883, both of which are themselves good
candidates for SRUing.
+ What's in quantal is essentially just the update from 8.0.2 to 8.0.3 plus two
other patches, for bugs #968284 and #981883, both of which are themselves good
candidates for SRUing.

So, the proposal is that we SRU the same 8.0.3-0ubuntu1 package to
  Precise.

  [Test Case]
See the individually mentioned bugs for test cases of the specific bugs.

For general validation of the point update of mesa, the piglit test
  suite can be used.

  1. Install prerequisites:
   sudo apt-get --yes install cmake g++ mesa-common-dev libgl1-mesa-dev \
  libtiff4-dev zlib1g-dev libpng12-dev python-numpy \
  freeglut3-dev x11proto-gl-dev libxrender-dev
  2. Checkout the piglit test suite from upstream
   git clone git://anongit.freedesktop.org/git/piglit
cd piglit; cmake . ; make
  3. DISPLAY=:0 piglit-run.py tests/all.tests mesa802.results
  4. Install mesa 8.0.3
  5. DISPLAY=:0 piglit-run.py tests/all.tests mesa803.results
  6. piglit-summary-html.py summary/compare mesa802.results mesa803.results

The tests take several hours to run.

Note: Piglit is not a comprehensive test suite and cannot guarantee
that there are no regressions. However, it is being actively maintained
and updated with new tests by the driver maintainers as they add
features and fix bugs in mesa, so should have decent coverage for
recently made code changes (which is where regressions are more likely
  to live).

  [Regression Potential]
A/B testing was done on the three major open source drivers. This testing
found that the new version did not cause regressions, and actually a number of
tests passed that had failed or been skipped in 8.0.2. Results are posted at:

    http://people.canonical.com/~bryce/mesa803-piglit/

mesa provides 3D acceleration functionality for all of the open source
video drivers. Thus, the types of regressions to watch for with this
  change are:

    * X.org crashes, freezes, or errors
    * Graphical corruption when using compositing desktops
    * Crashes, graphical corruption or other failures in 3D applications and
screensavers
    * Performance regressions in 3D functionality, measured by dropped FPS
rates in unity or 3D games

For such bugs, the diagnostic process would be to downgrade mesa back to
8.0.2 (without any other system changes), log out and back in, and
verify the problem as not reproducible.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 999901] [NEW] Screen resolution does not fall back to default resolution when suspended with external monitor

2012-07-10 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

My daily scenario:

Plug my laptop to external monitor through HDMI port.
Open Nvidia settings (dual monitor in ubuntu does not work recognize my
external monitor) and set twinview, clone and turn of laptop screen to work
only with external monitor at higher resolution.
If laptop is suspended in this configuration (closing lid) and then resumed
without the external monitor plugged the screen does not fall back to default
configuration and tries to use the external monitor resolution.

This behavior limits the functionality of a laptop in many situations
(e.g. running late to a meeting). Falling back to default screen options
would be the desired behavior. Not sure how this can be implemented if
dual monitor does not detect my external screen and I have to use
nvidia-settings every day.

Thanks and keep up the good work!!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 999901] Re: Screen resolution does not fall back to default resolution when suspended with external monitor

2012-07-10 Thread Bilal Akhtar
This is a problem with the nvidia driver, which doesn't support the
xrandr protocol. Drivers supporting xrandr have this ability already;
the screen resolution falls back to the laptop's own screen if the
external monitor is disconnected during suspend, as far as I know.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1023184] [NEW] libtxc-dxtn-s2tc0 should create a libtxc_dxtn.so file to help MESA choose (breaks some Wine apps)

2012-07-10 Thread Scott Ritchie
Public bug reported:

http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=31161 points to a packaging bug,
either in Ubuntu's s2tc or mesa

Relevant quote:

Note that Wine needs the 32-bit version of that package though.

Actually I had it installed. But it seems like there is a bug in ubuntu i386
package. I had to create a proper symbolic link:

sudo ln -s libtxc_dxtn_s2tc.so.0 /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libtxc_dxtn.so

Now I can see the menu.

To summarize:

1) If you're using opensource graphics drivers, you have to install
libtxc-dxtn-s2tc
2) make sure you have libtxc-dxtn-s2tc0:i386 installed.
3) run with MESA_DEBUG=1 to see if there are warning couldn't open
libtxc_dxtn.so
4) If you're in Ubuntu 12.04 rewrite a link
/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libtxc_dxtn.so to point to
/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libtxc_dxtn_s2tc.so.0

Hopefully, this thread will help somebody.

Seems like a Radeon issue. This occurs on one of my laptops with the
open source radeon driver, but not with my Intel-based Desktop PC.

Googling around: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=49484
tells it is because an application tries to use a (D3D) format (e.g.
DXT/s3tc) even though it's not available.

I think it is a bug in wine. It should check for available formats and
stop if requested is not available and print a message how to fix it.

Actually, you wouldn't get that message for DXTn surfaces, though you
might for float textures. Could you see what the attached patch outputs?

Note that Wine needs the 32-bit version of that package though.

Actually I had it installed. But it seems like there is a bug in ubuntu
i386 package. I had to create a proper symbolic link:

sudo ln -s libtxc_dxtn_s2tc.so.0 /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libtxc_dxtn.so

Now I can see the menu.

To summarize:

1) If you're using opensource graphics drivers, you have to install
libtxc-dxtn-s2tc
2) make sure you have libtxc-dxtn-s2tc0:i386

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 973096] Re: Nvidia driver causes xorg crash

2012-07-10 Thread bjfcom
I'm running:
Ubuntu 12.04 (fresh installation from 07/09/2012)

$uname -a:
Linux donatello 3.2.0-26-generic #41-Ubuntu SMP Thu Jun 14 17:49:24 UTC 2012
x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

FInally updated Ubuntu 9 (without ever a problem) to Pangolin
Precise...now I'm here. My computer randomly logs off. Seems if I run
in Ubuntu 2D, the issue doesn't arise. I'm not sure this is the right
bug, but a possible duplicate directed me here. I don't seem to have
the Xorg issue, however, as can be seen here:

$dmesg | grep Xorg
(gives nothing.)

If it helps
$lspci$ lspci | grep VGA
02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation G92 [Quadro FX 3700] (rev

Please help!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1012916] Re: [nouveau] 12.04 Unity 3d hard freezes

2012-07-10 Thread markb
I don't know if anybody is following my story here but I noticed an
xorg-edgers kernel update from 3.5.0.3.3 to 3.5.0.4.4 today so I thought
I would give it a test running Unity. Note, as my previous comment I can
run kernel 3.2 forever without issue. So I upgraded and rebooted to
3.5.0.4.4 and I still see PFIFO_CACHE_ERROR nouveau errors but this time
my system does not lock up. I don't see any UI problems. Here are the
dmesg logs:

[ 6392.463172] [drm] nouveau :01:00.0: PFIFO_CACHE_ERROR - Ch 4/0 Mthd
0x0060 Data 0x800f
[ 6610.102638] [drm] nouveau :01:00.0: PFIFO_CACHE_ERROR - Ch 4/0 Mthd
0x0060 Data 0x800f
[ 6625.011826] [drm] nouveau :01:00.0: PFIFO_CACHE_ERROR - Ch 4/0 Mthd
0x0060 Data 0x800f

So kernel 3.5.0.4.4 has improved things, but there still seems a problem
there.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1023207] Re: Xorg crash

2012-07-10 Thread Ken Sharp
I got my system working again by:

1. Loading failsafe X
2. Downloading and installing the latest fglrx
3. Rebooted (but then Wine wouldn't start - this is usually a sign that fglrx
is NOT installed)
4. Installed the fglrx-updates packages
5. Rebooted

I'm back to normal for now AFAICT. This doesn't explain what happened,
however.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2012-07-10 Thread zeusstl
#370 gets a huge +1
My machine was crashing 1-2 minute after literally every single boot for two
weeks. Now its been running fine for 24 hours including suspend, hibernation,
and reboot.

If you have a dual boot (win7 + ubuntu 12.04), make sure to fully log
out of windows before trying to log into ubuntu. You must actually use
the log out feature to log out your windows user before you shut down
windows.

I'm wondering how many people on this bug post have a dual boot?
