[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 949606] Re: 64 bit dev packages should include 32 bit .so library file

2012-09-19 Thread Darko Veberic
we have similar situation here in CERN where some legacy software
requires 32 bit compiling and it is impossible to keep dependencies
needed by ROOT in 32 bit installed alongside the 64 bit libraries. just
to name a few library and -dev packages that are broken in such a way:
libcppunit, libxft, libxext, libxmu etc...

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2012-09-19 Thread hawk
I've updated my Ubuntu to kernel 3.4 and so far the lockups have stopped.
On Sep 18, 2012 10:05 PM, Martin Wildam 993...@bugs.launchpad.net wrote:

I had similar issues - currently on kernel 3.4.0-030400-generic (got
at http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/) and no freeze since
 then (a few days).

The only reason I did not use a higher kernel is because of the higher
kernel numbers do not work with the current vmware player which I need
 for work.

   Update: 6/12/2012
This bug is about a complete system lock-up. No other TTYs can be
started. Mouse doesn't move. Keyboard doesn't react. The only solution is
 hard reset.

Seems to happen on a variety of configurations, including nVidia, ATI
   and Intel graphics.

If you are still able to TTY or SSH into other sessions, move the
mouse or use the keyboard, file another bug.

   Thx. Joris V. (brains).

   Update: 5/21/2012
Updating the kernel to 3.3.6 as suggested by Michael in #91, the system
seems stable, no freezes yet in 5-6 hrs of using and watching videos for
 couple of hrs.

   Original description:
I recently installed newly released ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64 bit version on
my desktop. And it is frequently freezing, for the first few hours it ran
smoothly and when I started watching videos it started freezing randomly.
I have to use hard restart every time.
Initially it was only during videos but now even during normal browsing
 it is freezing.

I am using on board graphics and do not have any graphics card
   installed.

Can someone please help me here, I really love the new looks of 12.04
and it bugs me not being able to use :(

   Below is my hardware configuration:
Processor: Intel CORE i3 processor (2nd generation)
   Board: Intel® Desktop Board DH67BL
   Ram: 4GB
   Graphics: On board
   HDD: 500 GB

Please let me know if you need more information, or any specific logs
   I can capture (and how).

   Thanks,
   Ketan Patil

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1052910] [NEW] Rendering problems in X with various applications.

2012-09-19 Thread LGB [Gábor Lénárt]
Public bug reported:

Since a while I have stange issues with X. As it happens with multiple
applications, I guess it's not application related but some xserver
related issue. The issue itself is about having odd horizonal stripes
sometimes, or sometimed unreadable fonts, etc. Sometimes they disappear
after a while or after switching windows/workspaces, but not always. At
least gnome-terminal, google-chrome and pidgin are all affected, it
seems.

I use 32 bit ubuntu precise, and ubuntu-2D (with compositor turned on in
metacity though, through gconf) session.

I even had a GPU lockup problem once, when only magic-sysreq helped to
kill Xserver because it was frozen

[452138.919043] [drm:i915_hangcheck_elapsed] *ERROR* Hangcheck timer elapsed...
 GPU hung
[452138.919055] [drm] capturing error event; look for more information in
/debug/dri/0/i915_error_state

But the problem I've described happed before (and since then) this hung
too.

I've tried what kernel msg suggested (after guessing to mount debugfs
...), but:

root@vega:~# cat /debug/dri/0/i915_error_state
cat: /debug/dri/0/i915_error_state: Cannot allocate memory

And then systems slowed down a lot ... Also producing:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1053029] [NEW] Please add dependency on libtxc-dxtn-s2tc0, required by various games

2012-09-19 Thread Bryce Harrington
Public bug reported:

[Impact]
Various commercial games (including several from the Humble Bundle) require
s3tc texture support. However this is not available with Intel graphics due to
patent issues. Users with Intel graphics must manually install
libtxc-dxtn-s2tc0 to make the games work.

The problem is compounded if the user is on amd64 and the game in
question is 32-bit, because they then need libtxc-dxtn-s2tc0:i386, but
there is no mechanism via the GUI to install this.

[Fix]
Add Recommends on libtxc-dxtn-s2tc0 to libgl1-mesa-glx. This will pull in
the library directly on amd64 if the game is 64-bit, or will pull it in
indirectly when the 32-bit mesa is installed if the game is 32-bit.

[Test Case]
1. On an Intel graphics system install 64-bit (amd64)
2. Install one of the affected games. (E.g. Bastion, Psychonauts, Amnesia,
etc.)
3. Launch game

Expected Behavior: Game launches normally
Actual Behavior: Terminates with messages about s3tc texture support or
missing GL support, or runs but graphics are messed up (missing textures/black
surfaces.)

[Regression Potential]
None really, this merely causes one additional package to be installed that is
already available in the archive.

Perhaps if someone has the patent-encumbered libtxc_dxtn installed this
could conflict, however we do not provide that package in the archive.

[References]
All the following are examples of users on Intel gfx / 64-bit that ran into
problems running Humble Bundle games, and reportedly solved it by installing
the libtxc-dxtn-s2tc0 package.

So I ran some code that updated my Ubuntu Software Center to include Bastion.
But now when i try to download and install i get this error message: Depends:
libtxc-dxtn-s2tc0 but it is not going to be installed Anyone know a fix?
--- http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1992367page=15

When I try to load Psychonauts it crashes and this is the result I get when
running from teminal. Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

- GL_EXT_texture_compression_s3tc
---

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1033263] Re: Ubuntu 12.04 freezes with nvidia drivers

2012-09-19 Thread Karol Szkudlarek
I have ubuntu 12.04 and the latest and greatest nv driver 4.304.43 and
my E6510 Dell still suffers on crashes. Crashes which can be aborted,
any reisub methods... only poweroff button helps. Here are my downtimes
till time when I'm using a 12.04:

crash 2012-07-20 22:26:26 - up 2012-07-20 22:29:49 =00:03:23 (203 s)
crash 2012-08-07 21:05:38 - up 2012-08-07 21:19:29 =00:13:51 (831 s)
crash 2012-08-07 22:37:09 - up 2012-08-07 22:40:40 =00:03:31 (211 s)
crash 2012-08-12 17:36:20 - up 2012-08-12 18:20:58 =00:44:38 (2678 s)
crash 2012-08-16 10:27:22 - up 2012-08-16 10:33:18 =00:05:56 (356 s)
crash 2012-08-21 19:37:52 - up 2012-08-21 19:38:14 =00:00:22 (22 s)
crash 2012-09-01 23:14:06 - up 2012-09-01 23:17:22 =00:03:16 (196 s)
crash 2012-09-19 10:53:17 - up 2012-09-19 10:55:38 =00:02:21 (141 s)

so laptop crashes very often... and hardly can be runnable during 2
weeks without crash.. (I'm using suspend/resume to my laptop).. :-( So I
think that 304.43 are different then from ubuntu 12.04 package but still
is unusable and unstable.

Guess Xorg/Video-ati should also protect the memory allocation to avoid
such crash in case the app/toolkit requests a huge EXA buffer.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1022479] Re: bzr crashed with SIGSEGV in QGtkStyle::drawComplexControl()

2012-09-19 Thread Ricardo Salveti
Actually this crash happens at the xorg-server package, as it's a
fallback to use the system memory when dealing with mixed pixmaps.

I don't yet know if this would be something we could fix at the Xorg
side, but the behaviour of a broken app/toolkit crashing the Xorg is
something that needs to be avoided.

** Package changed: xserver-xorg-video-ati (Ubuntu) = xorg-server
(Ubuntu)
