[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1030630] Re: System freeze on logout and shutdown

2012-11-18 Thread William H. Allen
I am running an older build (11.10) on the same system (64 bit Toshiba
A665). Same problem - purple bar at top and frozen system at shutdown.
The thread above indicates the problem is back - does this mean there is
no resolution yet? Will this continue after I upgrade to 12.04 or 12.10?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1080291] [NEW] Overheating Lenovo Thinkpad T500

2012-11-18 Thread Bucic
Public bug reported:

Lenovo Thinkpad T500 runs hot / on high fan RPM when configured to use
the discrete Mobility Radeon 3650 instead Intel graphics. I haven't
noticed any differences between Catalyst and open source driver so I'm
reporting from Catalyst-configured configuration. Open source is a no-
go!

I use sensors command in terminal to verify temp values:
For intel it's below 2000 RPM and temps circa 40
For AMD it's close to 3000 RPM and temps 45 and higher. Once RPM reaches higher
threshold, it never goes to lower RPM values.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1080299] [NEW] Strange error popup appears from time to time

2012-11-18 Thread Michael Heuberger
Public bug reported:

From time to time I'm seeing strange error popups under Ubuntu's 12.10
Unity. These always say:

This problem report is damaged and cannot be processed.
TypeError(Error('Incorrect padding',),)

I have no idea what triggered these or where they are coming from. They
are a nuisance. I always have to close the popup. Sometimes it's
paranoid, happening like every 5 seconds then it won't happen for hours,
then again.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1080337] [NEW] Intel vs AMD desktop performance - worse on AMD

2012-11-18 Thread Bucic
Public bug reported:

Not much to say here. I can clearly see that during Superkey+W (unity
shortcut) or Ctrl+Shift+E in Firefox animations on Intel are smoother.
Some time ago I quit using AMD on my system because browser performance
was unbearable - see http://askubuntu.com/questions/92080/why-do-i-have-
poor-video-performance-in-browsers-with-a-ati-hd3650-gpu for details
(video + overall experience).

In 12.04 the difference was much more severe. In 12.10 the difference is
less pronounced (Firefox performance on AMD got better), but it's still
noticeable (12.10, desktop perf.: Intel vs AMD).

I acquired *.apport files from different configurations on my system, so
let me know what's needed to move the troubleshooting further.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1080350] [NEW] Overheating AMD Turion II Dual-Core Mobile M500 ATI RV710Mobility Radeon HD 4300

2012-11-18 Thread David Ayers
Public bug reported:

Ever since upgrading from Maverick (with GNOME Classic) to Precise
(using Unity 2D since using the default Unity makes the situation worse)
my note book regularly overheats with normal usage:

I've been regularly using:
echo low | sudo tee /sys/class/drm/card0/device/power_profile

I've am also using psensor to warn me if the temperature rises above
92°. When 'idle' the temperature is at about 80°. If the CPU is used
(merely starting eclipse and letting all the the startup validation
processes finish) it quickly rises to 88°. If the usages is sustained
(rebuilding a java project) the temperature oscillates between 95° and
98°. If I do anything else that adds to the load (ie. if the
temperature is 98° for short period of time), the system freezes, but
the everything remains on, fans and CPU temperature stays up. I need to
turn off the notebook by keeping the power button pressed.

Note that this system overheats /with/ the low power profile.

Here are some general stats about this system, please let me know, if I
can provide further information:

This started after the upgrading from Maverick. I'm currently running

Starting on Ubuntu 12.10, random freezes/hangs happen when using X.
Mouse and keyboard stop working for some seconds, then resume working.
System does not crash. X log reports problems with nvidia driver.
Problem is not reproducible.

[Problem]
ATI card fan is always on with opensource radeon driver

[Original Description]
$ cat /sys/class/drm/card0/device/power_profile
low

When I use the opensource driver for my ATI card the notebook fan is
always spinning and temperature of outgoing air from fan is very high,
even when I set /sys/class/drm/card0/device/power_profile to low and cpu
mode to powersave. With proprietary drivers (fglrx) I set video card
performance to ondemand (I forgot the exact name of this mode in ATI
control center) and cpu mode to ondemand, and the notebook isn't hot,
fans are not spinning (if I don't start flash, games or some similar app
with high cpu load). So with fglrx I can use the notebook on battery for
1.5 - 2 hours and it's not hot, but with the opensource driver notebook
on battery is dead in 50 minutes, the fan is always on, it noise is
loud, and the notebook is very hot.

It is not only the case with Unity(tested with Ubuntu 12.10 fresh

fglrx install per apt-get install fglrx fglrx-amdcccle, all updates

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1067320] Re: 1002:6798 [fglrx] VT cursor is visible and blinking on top of Unity Radeon HD 7970 and 5450

2012-11-18 Thread Hans-Peter Schadler
Update (with some kind of solution):
What I have tried so far:
- Disabling KMS explicitly at grub prompt: no change
- Disabling vesafb: blank screen
- Disabling Plymouth: no change

Another thing I tried right now, was installing the AMD Catalyst 12.11
Beta 8 driver. So far (tested it with 6 or 7 reboots) it seems to work.
Also switching users works again (but there are some quirks if you try
to switch back to the first user again. You have to use ctrl-alt-F7, but
that can be a general problem and may be not related to the fglrx driver
as it seems to switch to the wrong console if one uses Switch User in
the xfce menu).

Long story short: No graphic errors and no visible VT cursor so far.

What one has to do after installing the beta driver, is editing the file
/etc/ati/signature
After the installation of the beta driver, one gets an unpleasant watermark in
the lower right corner of the screen which tells that the driver is for testing
purposes only. To get rid of this, edit the mentioned file and replace the
content with

9777c589791007f4aeef06c922ad54a2:ae59f5b9572136d99fdd36f0109d358fa643f2bd4a2644d9efbb4fe91a9f6590a145:f612f0b01f2565cd9bd834f8119b309bae11a1ed4a2661c49fdf3fad11986cc4f641f1ba1f2265909a8e34ff1699309bf211a7eb4d7662cd9f8e3faf14986d92f646f1bc

(all in one line)

Hope that helps!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 949071] Re: CRT monitor refresh setting always resets to 60 after reboot

2012-11-18 Thread daniel
I found a solution to the problem and now can start at my desired refresh rate
of 75 hz, I think it can works for all other people, open nvidia-settings then
go to X server Display configuration and click on tab X Screen then on
MetaMode there are three buttons where the first open a menu containing all the
possible resolution and refresh rate, take note of the string containing your
desired settings the look at the image right above and by pressing the Delete
button remove all the resolution and refresh rate you don't want leaving only
the string you want, if you accidentally remove the desired string then use
button Add to reinsert it in, finally apply the desired resolution and refresh
rate and pressing Save to X configuration file button save in xorg.conf.
Restart and it should works, if it doesn't look at my xorg.conf below when I
modified the line
VertRefresh 55.0 - 75.0 in VertRefresh 75.0 - 75.0 to force
the use of 75 hz and added line
Option UseEDIDFreqs False in section Screen to tell X to
use only my settings. I hope it will help someone.

A small window appears, showing the side view of your current molecular
modelling project.

4) A small (but empty) window appears, then dissappears together with the whole

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1080499] [NEW] mise à jouir 12.04 LTS

2012-11-18 Thread Marc BOCCHIETTI
Public bug reported:

Bonjour,

Celle-ci fonctionne parfaitement bien pourtant.

Merci par avance pour votre aide.

Cordialement.

Marc

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1080514] [NEW] Click-and-drag in eye of gnome crashes X

2012-11-18 Thread James
Public bug reported:

If I open any image with eog (I tried several different .png and .svg
files), then click and drag with the left mouse button inside the
window, X immediately crashes and I get taken back to the login screen.
If no image file is open, nothing happens. The behaviour is the same in
Unity and Xfce.

I'm running 64-bit Ubuntu 12.04, fully updated, on a Dell Inspiron 15R
5520 laptop with an AMD Radeon HD 7600M graphics card and the official
64-bit AMD driver (not sure how to tell which version - it was the
latest a couple of months ago anyway). xorg's version is
1:7.6+12ubuntu1, and eog's is 3.4.2-0ubuntu1.1. If I redirect the
output from eog to a file, I get:

(eog:22355): Gdk-WARNING **: eog: Fatal IO error 11 (Resource
temporarily unavailable) on X server :0.0.

 /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old contains the following backtrace:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1041063] Re: mouse pointer periodically leaps to left and top of screen with absolute pointing devices

2012-11-18 Thread a7x
This bug was introduced upstream in xorg-server 1.13 (Git commit
749a593), so unless that particular commit was backported to the xorg-
server package for precise, this bug does not affect precise.

2012-11-18 Thread a7x
I backported xorg-server-2:1.13.0-0ubuntu7 to quantal and uploaded it to
my PPA (https://launchpad.net/~a7x/+archive/bug1041063). It has
finished building. To install:

sudo apt-add-repository ppa:a7x/bug1041063
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

Why is this constantly being pushed? And being pushed at all, this is a
pretty critical issue that breaks quite a few laptops, I don't even
understand why you would ignore an issue like this and push it instead
of making it a top priority issue...
