[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1129220] Re: Fails to boot to X, but starting lightdm afterward works

2013-02-19 Thread Franck
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 982889 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/982889

Thanks Chris. After searching a bit, I guess my bug is a duplicate of #982889.
Notice this is concomitent with me upgrading my SSD to a faster one (840pro).
Might explain why I now meet the race condition...

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1129872] Re: Could not find video drivers

2013-02-19 Thread Dave Lentz
The problem is that you installed fglrx driver and it does not support
your card.

sudo apt-get purge fglrx-updates
sudo apt-get remove --purge xserver-xorg-video-ati xserver-xorg-video-radeon
sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-ati
sudo apt-get install --reinstall libgl1-mesa-glx libgl1-mesa-dri
xserver-xorg-core
sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup
sudo rm -rf /etc/ati

Reboot.

2013-02-19 Thread Matt C
I notice that this is filed under package “xserver-xorg-video-intel” yet
people report issues on various graphics cards. Mine is AMD chipset with
VGA controller Radeon AMD nee ATI RS880 [Radeon HD 4200].

Will this reduce visibility to those concerned with the radeon driver?

2013-02-19 Thread Matt C
Re. #713 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-
intel/+bug/993187/comments/713

I have ran for 24 hours on 12.04.1 with LTS Enablement stack from
Quantal installed (with kernel 3.5.0-23-generic and X.Org X Server
1.13.0 / 2:1.13.0-0ubuntu6.1~precise2).

Although the OS and graphics run smoother in 3.5 kernel, I just had a
crash. Different message but similar symptoms. Black and white dump
screen showing Kernel Bug message followed a few seconds later by
corrupt graphics on screen and a need to Emergency Sync + Reboot -
although system IS responsive to Num Lock this time, it's not entirely a
hard lock but as Ctrl+Alt+F1 doesn't work to get to a console it might
as well be.

This time error is:

Kernel Bug at slub.c Invalid Opcode

At the time I was copying backup data to a removable disk across SSH and
working in Unity as normal.

Trying Kernel 3.8 next, as per suggestion from Shayne on comment #673:

+
+ install NX server, log in remotely using kde session
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+
+ small, patch has been in raring for a couple of weeks now without issues
+
+ --
+
This behavior is 100% reproducible. I have freenx-server installed from here:
  https://launchpad.net/~freenx-team/+archive/ppa

And am logging in from a remote machine with the newest nxclient from
nomachine.org. What happens is that upon login or shortly thereafter,
kwin crashes with a segfault. After restarting, it crashes at regular
  intervals as well.

I reported a bug to the KDE4 tracker:
  https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=298370

And it was marked a duplicate of a bug NOT related to NX:
  https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=293209

Judging from the backtrace, and from the comments in bug 293209, the
problem is related to Xorg, and the people at KDE seem to think that the
problem might even be Ubuntu 12.04 specific. So I decided to re-report
the bug here and give you pointers to the relevant KDE bugreports.

We are really desperate to get Kwin working under NX and are willing to
  test whatever you like!

  Many thanks in advance.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1123885] Re: Gestion espace libre

2013-02-19 Thread Adela Suhani
Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make
Ubuntu better. We noticed that this bug report is not in English. If you
could translate it to English it would be more understandable to
triagers.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1127497] Re: Xorg crashes when exiting steam segfault in sna_pixmap_set_dri()

2013-02-19 Thread Chris Wilson
I am almost 100% sure I have this fixed in upstream. I've been through
all the places where gpu_bo/gpu_damage can become out-of-sync and
validated that the checks are now inplace. If you can find the time to
test with ppa:xorg-edgers (dated from today) that would be extremely
useful.

Never mind, at the time of the crash there was no possibility you could
have been in nomodeset mode, since the nouveau ddx will not load in that
case.

After reboot it sugget to load in low-quality mode. /etc/X11/xorg.conf was not
created, so I put old onece back and restarted again. Still the same problem.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1124693] Re: Xorg crashed with SIGABRT in drmmode_from_scrn [hybrid]

2013-02-19 Thread Bryce Harrington
I think he didn't deliberately set nomodeset; it sounds like we're doing
this via grub for failsafe. Perhaps we shouldn't, but until that's
changed we should continue tracking this issue. Ideally the system
should give the user an error rather than crashing, or default to
something safe when we're in failsafe mode.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1076776] Re: 12.10: Default background after logon

2013-02-19 Thread Bryce Harrington
Offhand this sounds like a compiz crashed bug, particularly if you're
finding the issue does not appear with lubuntu or other non-unity
ubuntu's. If this is true, then you should be able to launch a terminal
window via ctrlalt t when the system is showing just the
background.

In any case, since this bug was filed originally against linux, it does
not have the X debugging info. Please reproduce the problem and then
run 'apport-collect 1076776'. You may need to ssh into the box while
the system is blank/lockedup/corrupted, so we can see the exact error
state.

If it is compiz crashing, your ~/.xsession-errors may have some more
relevant error message about why compiz crashed.

Thanks for the additional information; it's not evident what's gone
wrong but this is worth further investigation. Stick with the
proprietary driver in the meantime until we have something new to test.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2013-02-19 Thread Matt C
A 3.8 kernel did not appear to be compatible with 12.04.1... Although it booted
to the login screen there was:
  (1) No grub menu, (2) No boot screen just purple, (3) When plugging in a USB
keyboard (none connected initially), nothing happens, (4) No network. I had to
boot into rescue media and restore the previous Kernel 3.5.

This comment is just in case anyone else having graphics stability
problems over the past 1-2 months is following this same path I am, on a
quest to restore desktop stability with an AMD/radeon chipset.

I just installed some new bugfixes to the 3.5 kernel from proposed.
There are a few radeon bugfixes listed in the changelog. I Fingers
crossed.

This may be my last post on this bug, as it has been marked as (yet
another) Won't Fix.

This past 6 months has been very poor for stability of both for my Ubuntu
Server and Ubuntu Desktop installations.
Then there is 12.10, which I downgraded immediately to 12.04 upon encountering
the Amazon lens, several software crashes and other gems.

I can't get through a single working day without some form of Ubuntu
crash. Yet my laptop at home is stable.

I think it's time to review Won't Fix policy. Yes, this bug has become
a hodge-podge. It is also High + Critical severity and a serious
stability issue. I would never close a serious system usability bug
like this as Won't Fix.

I bet many of the 428 users who have marked themselves as affected by
this bug would be willing to run whatever diagnostic steps the
developers need.

The reason why many posts are so vague could be because this is an
unrecoverable random crash, which leaves no logs to post.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1127497] Re: Xorg crashes when exiting steam segfault in sna_pixmap_set_dri()

2013-02-19 Thread Chris Wilson
Frustating. Can I ask you to build from scratch with debugging enabled:

# sudo apt-get build-dep xserver-xorg-video-intel
# git clone git://anongit.freedesktop.org/xorg/driver/xf86-video-intel
# cd xf86-video-intel
# ./autogen.sh --prefix=/usr --with-default-accel=sna --enable-debug
# make sudo make install

That will (temporarily) replace your intel_drv.so with assertions
enabled. It is likely to crash much earlier - hopefully closer to the
actual culprit.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1098316] Re: Ubuntu crashes on graphical login

2013-02-19 Thread Bryce Harrington
It looks like nouveau is gpu hanging on boot for some reason.

When you're setting nomodeset, it's disabling nouveau entirely so you're
booting with vesa, which won't give the best graphics. Anyway, that's
why it works in that case.

2013-02-19 Thread Ped
13.2beta6 ( amd-driver-installer-
catalyst-13.2-beta6-linux-x86.x86_64.zip ):

still no luck on my HP 4540s, again it fails with invalid BIOS message.
But again it fails reasonably, no crash anymore, just error message in Xorg.log.

I did report it as http://ati.cchtml.com/show_bug.cgi?id=701 ... not
sure if somebody from AMD will pay attention or if the issue can be
resolved on their side, but I think I'm out of luck at least till fglrx

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 979748] Re: Laptop with Intel Graphics: external VGA monitor only gets signal on boot (no “hot plugging”)

2013-02-19 Thread Chris Wilson
The monitor doesn't have an EDID nor generate hotplug events. Without
the hw detection, we fallback to probing the EDID to determine if a
display maybe present. Since that is not, we then guess based on whether
we can read any values back from the VGA plane in the display (-
unknown connection status). That is a heavy-weight operation and only
performed upon explicit request from userspace, i.e. we do not run that
check periodically and synthesize hotplug events. This is an issue where
improving your experience is to the detriment of everyone else. Instead,
you basically need to manually trigger a probe whenever you plug in your
monitor (either through xrandr or the display manager).

2013-02-19 Thread Chris Wilson
So, the problem is the laptop monitor is off until some application
turns it on? If you want to permanently disable the output add
video=LVDS-1:d to your kernel commandline. Otherwise, it is a policy
issue that needs to be enforced across the entire system.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 979748] Re: [expected] VGA monitor only gets signal on boot (no “hot plugging”, no EDID)

2013-02-19 Thread Andy Iverson
Thank you for the reply. I think I understand the situation and can
appreciate that many others would be negatively affected by my
experience being improved!

I do need more advice on how to manually trigger a probe. In my
experience, connecting the monitor (after booted), then opening display
manager will have display manager indicate the monitor is connected (and
active), but still no signal is sent to it (still black, monitor
reporting no signal). So, any help on triggering this would be
welcomed. If I am able to manually do this without rebooting then I
would be accepting of this bug being resolved.

Thanks again for the reply.

I'd give it a bit of time before declaring success. Since you've

and harden it, which is why I was optimist I had fixed something. Can
you tell me the package name you installed from xorg-edgers, so that I

I didn't install any package, just updated all my packages which
included xserver-xorg-video-intel. The version apt reports is
2:2.21.2+git20130213.9861423a-0ubuntu0sarvatt. This is an upgrade from
2:2.21.2-0ubuntu0

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1013881]

2013-02-19 Thread Nicolas-mailhot-laposte
(In reply to comment #39)
So, lads, with configurable nbsp - is there any solution that would make you
 all reasonably happy?

Is there a way to make the spacebar more neutral *except* for the
combinations that trigger something else than space? The main complain
seems to be that some apps want to grab space combinations (which is a
really stupid idea IMHO) so can xkb work ass passthrough except for the
specific combos used for nbspc?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1125759] Re: Intel integrated graphics boots in low graphics mode

2013-02-19 Thread Adam Bruce
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 982889 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/982889

Bryce, I have added sleep to lightdm.conf as mentioned in comment #5 in
bug 982889

This boots up perfectly everytime, even without the /etc/X11/xorg.conf
file I needed before

So I guess we can assume plymouth is the issue here, as detailed in bug
982889

I'll keep an eye on that report and let you know if it fixes this bug
when that one is fixed

Thanks for your efforts!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 979748] Re: [expected] VGA monitor only gets signal on boot (no “hot plugging”, no EDID)

2013-02-19 Thread Chris Wilson
Hmm, if the display is being recognised by the display manager and we
don't successfully turn it on, then that is a serious issue. After it
gets into the no signal state, can you please attach the output of
xrandr --verbose. It could either be that the modeline is incompatible,
or that we are not programming the CRTC correctly. For the latter,
grabbing intel-gpu-tools and attaching the output of intel_reg_dumper
would be useful.

Also please make sure you have all the updates available (I would like
if you could use xorg-edgers or raring), and attach your Xorg.0.log
after it exhibits the failure.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1127497] Re: Xorg crashes when exiting steam segfault in sna_pixmap_set_dri()

2013-02-19 Thread Chris Wilson
Thanks, that suggests

commit 1f16d854264ea923303b79379266bd789fd9dd4d
Author: Chris Wilson ch...@chris-wilson.co.uk
Date: Mon Feb 18 14:30:55 2013 +

sna/dri: Prevent swapping a decoupled DRI2Buffer

If the DRI2Buffer is no longer valid for the Drawable, for example the
window had just been reparent, just complete the swap without triggering
any assertions.

as being the most likely fix. Doesn't quite fit the symptoms though, so
I'm still worried there is another bug lurking. :|

No, the race here is in the global_mutex used for serialising setting
up, tearing down and opening the device. My preferred workaround is
exactly what Bryce implemented.

2013-02-19 Thread Ábel
Hi Chris,

Thank you for your reply. This problem was specific to Ubuntu 9.10 and
works fine in newer versions.

Regards,
   Ábel

Am 19.02.2013 12:47, schrieb Chris Wilson:
So, the problem is the laptop monitor is off until some application
turns it on? If you want to permanently disable the output add
video=LVDS-1:d to your kernel commandline. Otherwise, it is a policy
issue that needs to be enforced across the entire system.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 624684] Re: [arrandale] Lenovo U460 HDMI doesn't work

2013-02-19 Thread Chris Wilson
Your laptop is known as a hybrid machine with two GPUs. The internal
display (and typically VGA) is connected to the weaker integrated GPU,
whereas the HDMI is connected to the discrete GPU. We are only just
beginning to catch up with Windows in enabling multi-GPU / multi-head
configurations - in the meantime you have to either make a choice about
which GPU to use, or to use something like bumblebee.

Note that in raring, we have the initial enabling of multi-GPU support.
