Re. #713 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video- intel/+bug/993187/comments/713 I have ran for 24 hours on 12.04.1 with LTS Enablement stack from Quantal installed (with kernel 3.5.0-23-generic and X.Org X Server 1.13.0 / 2:1.13.0-0ubuntu6.1~precise2). Although the OS and graphics run smoother in 3.5 kernel, I just had a crash. Different message but similar symptoms. Black and white dump screen showing Kernel Bug message followed a few seconds later by corrupt graphics on screen and a need to Emergency Sync + Reboot - although system IS responsive to Num Lock this time, it's not entirely a hard lock but as Ctrl+Alt+F1 doesn't work to get to a console it might as well be. I have freenx-server installed from here: https://launchpad.net/~freenx-team/+archive/ppa And am logging in from a remote machine with the newest nxclient from nomachine.org. What happens is that upon login or shortly thereafter, kwin crashes with a segfault. After restarting, it crashes at regular intervals as well. I reported a bug to the KDE4 tracker: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=298370 And it was marked a duplicate of a bug NOT related to NX: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=293209 Judging from the backtrace, and from the comments in bug 293209, the problem is related to Xorg, and the people at KDE seem to think that the problem might even be Ubuntu 12.04 specific. So I decided to re-report the bug here and give you pointers to the relevant KDE bugreports. We are really desperate to get Kwin working under NX and are willing to test whatever you like! Ideally the system should give the user an error rather than crashing, or default to something safe when we're in failsafe mode. ** Summary changed: - Xorg crashed with SIGABRT in drmmode_from_scrn + Xorg crashed with SIGABRT in drmmode_from_scrn [hybrid] ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-nouveau (Ubuntu) Status: In Progress = Triaged -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-nouveau in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1124693 Title: Xorg crashed with SIGABRT in drmmode_from_scrn [hybrid] To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-nouveau/+bug/1124693/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1076776] Re: 12.10: Default background after logon
Offhand this sounds like a compiz crashed bug, particularly if you're finding the issue does not appear with lubuntu or other non-unity ubuntu's. If this is true, then you should be able to launch a terminal window via ctrlalt t when the system is showing just the background. In any case, since this bug was filed originally against linux, it does not have the X debugging info. Please reproduce the problem and then run 'apport-collect 1076776'. You may need to ssh into the box while the system is blank/lockedup/corrupted, so we can see the exact error state. If it is compiz crashing, your ~/.xsession-errors may have some more relevant error message about why compiz crashed. ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-nouveau (Ubuntu) Status: New = Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-nouveau in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1076776 Title: 12.10: Default background after logon To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1076776/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.
A 3.8 kernel did not appear to be compatible with 12.04.1... Although it booted to the login screen there was: (1) No grub menu, (2) No boot screen just purple, (3) When plugging in a USB keyboard (none connected initially), nothing happens, (4) No network. I had to boot into rescue media and restore the previous Kernel 3.5. This comment is just in case anyone else having graphics stability problems over the past 1-2 months is following this same path I am, on a quest to restore desktop stability with an AMD/radeon chipset. I just installed some new bugfixes to the 3.5 kernel from proposed. There are a few radeon bugfixes listed in the changelog. I Fingers crossed. This may be my last post on this bug, as it has been marked as (yet another) Won't Fix. This past 6 months has been very poor for stability of both for my Ubuntu Server and Ubuntu Desktop installations. Then there is 12.10, which I downgraded immediately to 12.04 upon encountering the Amazon lens, several software crashes and other gems. I can't get through a single working day without some form of Ubuntu crash. Yet my laptop at home is stable. I think it's time to review Won't Fix policy. Yes, this bug has become a hodge-podge. It is also High + Critical severity and a serious stability issue. I would never close a serious system usability bug like this as Won't Fix. I bet many of the 428 users who have marked themselves as affected by this bug would be willing to run whatever diagnostic steps the developers need. The reason why many posts are so vague could be because this is an unrecoverable random crash, which leaves no logs to post. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/993187 Title: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently. Frustating. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 979748] Re: Laptop with Intel Graphics: external VGA monitor only gets signal on boot (no “hot plugging”)
The monitor doesn't have an EDID nor generate hotplug events. Without the hw detection, we fallback to probing the EDID to determine if a display maybe present. Since that is not, we then guess based on whether we can read any values back from the VGA plane in the display (- unknown connection status). That is a heavy-weight operation and only performed upon explicit request from userspace, i.e. we do not run that check periodically and synthesize hotplug events. This is an issue where improving your experience is to the detriment of everyone else. Instead, you basically need to manually trigger a probe whenever you plug in your monitor (either through xrandr or the display manager). ** Summary changed: - Laptop with Intel Graphics: external VGA monitor only gets signal on boot (no “hot plugging”) + [expected] VGA monitor only gets signal on boot (no “hot plugging”, no EDID) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/979748 Title: [expected] VGA monitor only gets signal on boot (no “hot plugging”, no EDID) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/979748/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

Thank you for the reply. I think I understand the situation and can appreciate that many others would be negatively affected by my experience being improved! In my experience, connecting the monitor (after booted), then opening display manager will have display manager indicate the monitor is connected (and active), but still no signal is sent to it (still black, monitor reporting no signal). (In reply to comment #39) So, lads, with configurable nbsp - is there any solution that would make you all reasonably happy? Is there a way to make the spacebar more neutral *except* for the combinations that trigger something else than space? [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 979748] Re: [expected] VGA monitor only gets signal on boot (no “hot plugging”, no EDID)
Hmm, if the display is being recognised by the display manager and we don't successfully turn it on, then that is a serious issue. After it gets into the no signal state, can you please attach the output of xrandr --verbose. It could either be that the modeline is incompatible, or that we are not programming the CRTC correctly. For the latter, grabbing intel-gpu-tools and attaching the output of intel_reg_dumper would be useful.
