2013-04-16 Thread Bryce Harrington
Fiorenzo De Santis,
Please run the tool sudo intel_reg_dumper once when the screen is working
correctly, and once with it showing the blank screen / out-of-range error, and
attach both files. Comparing the register settings for them may highlight
where the problem is.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1166916] Re: temperature overheating of cpu and radeon in 12.10 and above

2013-04-16 Thread codeslinger
apparently I am still not doing a very good job of explaining the
situation... let me try again.

on 10.10 the best case idle temp is 51C
on 12.04 the best case idle temp is about 57C
on 13.04 the best case idle temp is 75C (that is at idle! and more typically
it is low 80's)

under full load:
the max temp of 10.10 is 83C
the max temp of 12.04 is 81C
the max temp of 13.04 is 96C and climbing... (it was shutdown rather than risk
meltdown)

it is expected that 12.04 would be a little bit hotter than 10.10
because 10.10 is 32 bits and generic whereas the others are 64 bits and
low latency. The difference between 10.10 at full load and 12.04 at
full load was probably due to lack of consistency in the load itself, in
any case, they are close enough not to matter.

Suppose that blowing the dust out of the fan achieved an unrealistic
gain of 10C in cooling. That would still leave 13.04 at 86C (or higher)
which really is still too hot. However, blowing the dust out of the fan
would be expected to affect all of the oses equally. So that still
leaves us with a differential of 75 - 51 = 24C at idle and 96 - 83 = 13C
at 100% load, between the oses.

That is a huge difference and the only source of that difference is the
software. If I were running these tests years apart, that would be a
different thing, and it would be reasonable to blame dust for the
difference, but I am not; instead I have a multi-boot setup and I am
running the tests within ten minutes of each other, so hardware
differences are ruled out because it is the same hardware and the same
amount of dust.

Furthermore, on 10.10 when the temp gets down to around 55C, the Fan
Shuts Off... therefore however much dust there might be, it is not even
a factor for the temperature of 10.10 because under light load or idle
it does not even use the fan. With the other os versions the fan never
shuts off, but 12.04 can get pretty quiet, 13.04 the fan is always loud
even at idle.

so there is indeed a very serious problem here.

I started out thinking this was a video driver issue, because I started
out with the observation that at idle up to moderate loads the video was
consistently 2 to 3 degrees hotter than the other temps. However, in
further testing I observed that at high loads the other temperatures
greatly exceeded the video temperature. So at that point I back-tracked
on my assumptions about the video driver being the sole culprit.

It has been my experience as a programmer that when one is presented
with a complex set of symptoms, it is usually the result of multiple
bugs appearing to be a single problem. So, I'm inclined to suspect that
there is a problem with the radeon but that there is also a problem with
the cpu scheduler too.

Right now I am working on two things. The first thing is that I have
done a fresh clean/new install of 12.04, because my main version of
12.04 has had a lot of changes made, so I want a pristine os for
testing. The other chief advantage is that on the stock os, lm-sensors
is able to read the radeon temperature, but on my main 12.04 lm-sensors
is no longer able to read the radeon temp. So, with lm-sensors working
properly we can have a direct comparison with 13.04.

The second thing that I am working on is trying to solve the problem of
why lm-sensors can't read the fan speed. I think it would be very
helpful to see exactly what the fans are doing.

Now, in preliminary testing of the 12.04 new install with nothing added
(except temperature reading software) and no updates I was very
surprised to see that it was running substantially hotter than my main
12.04 which has had zillions of updates and other changes. This is a
preliminary finding I ran out of time and was not yet able to pursue
this further, but the result was quite surprising.

Something else that I have played with a little bit is the scheduler
mode. Changing it from OnDemand to PowerSave shows cpu use going way up
at the same time that temperature goes down. The problem appears to be
that the time spent on power saving is not being properly accounted for
in the cpu load calculation. HTOP returns numbers that are nearly
identical to my own program's calculations, so it may be a problem with
the kernel's accounting.

Bottom line is that there is an overheating problem, in fact it may be
two different problems, and this is a serious issue because it can lead
to hardware destruction.

But figuring out what the problem is, is going to be difficult. I am
working on some more tests to try to make the situation clearer.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2013-04-16 Thread Frank Schilder
I think this bug is assigned to the wrong package. It is very likely a
kernel problem. On my hardware, the kernel actually detects the lock. I
posted extracts from the syslog file recovered after a hard reset in the
following two posts to another thread on the same problem: a
href=https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1154006/comments/42;1154006#42/a
and a
href=https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1154006/comments/46;1154006#46/a.
The lines to look for are

Apr 10 18:58:51 ceylon kernel: [ 2412.456005] ioatdma :00:08.0: reset
Apr 10 18:58:52 ceylon kernel: [ 2412.603756] BUG: soft lockup - CPU#3 stuck
for 22s! [svn:5127]

in #42 and

Apr 14 13:16:12 ceylon kernel: [18557.572005] ioatdma :00:08.0: reset
Apr 14 13:16:12 ceylon kernel: [18557.772001] INFO: rcu_sched detected stall on
CPU 1 (t=15000 jiffies)
Apr 14 13:16:12 ceylon kernel: [18557.772002] sending NMI to all CPUs:

in #46. I just went back to 10.04, the instability of 12.04 is just
ridiculous. I hope that a kernel developer is following this discussion
and might find a hint in the syslog extracts I posted under the other
number.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1169333] Re: Screen resolution too low and missing launcher when connected to HDTV via HDMI

2013-04-16 Thread Christopher
Yeah. The laptop's highest resolution is 1366x768 and the HDTV is the
lower value. What changed is that both could co-exist with the mirrored
display unchecked, but now when the HDMI cable is plugged it the laptop
display acts as if the size is larger than it really is, with no
launcher or bottom dock (Cairo) and my desktop icons just off the left
edge where the launcher normally is.

Unplugging the HTMI cable restores the display as it should be, without
even changing the display settings.

What's needed is separate control of the displays as in (I hate to say
it) Windows.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1164093] Re: FFe: new upstream release 9.1.1

2013-04-16 Thread Maarten Lankhorst
** Description changed:

The Ubuntu X team would like to push mesa 9.1.1 for raring. It has been
on a staging ppa for roughly two months now, and we've tested it on a
variety of hw. During this time we've identified a regression with the
Intel driver having a slow blur effect, causing issues with kwin and
Unity dash. This was why we didn't upload it to raring before it got
  fixed upstream.

For me personally, it also fixes a bug in the Intel driver where compiz
hangs after returning from another user session.

Upstream release notes for 9.1 and 9.1.1:

  9.1 New features

Note: some of the new features are only available with certain drivers.

  GL_ANGLE_texture_compression_dxt3
  GL_ANGLE_texture_compression_dxt5
  GL_ARB_ES3_compatibility
  GL_ARB_internalformat_query
  GL_ARB_map_buffer_alignment
  GL_ARB_shading_language_packing
  GL_ARB_texture_buffer_object_rgb32
  GL_ARB_texture_cube_map_array
  GL_EXT_color_buffer_float
  GL_OES_depth_texture_cube_map
OpenGL 3.1 core profile support on Radeon HD2000 up to HD6000 series
Multisample anti-aliasing support on Radeon X1000 series
OpenGL ES 3.0 support on Intel HD Graphics 2000, 2500, 3000, and 4000

  Bug fixes

TBD -- This list is likely incomplete.

  Changes

Removed VAAPI state tracker (unmaintained and broken)
Removed i965's broken hardware implementation of GL_NV_vertex_program
  Removed swrast support for GL_NV_vertex_program

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1168967] Re: regression: no video after upgrading kernel, mesa, libc, and several other packages (ThinkPad T500)

2013-04-16 Thread Greg Ward
This is starting to look very much like a kernel bug, although I'm still
confused about several things. My main evidence is that I'm having
similar problems with System Rescue CD, a Gentoo-based rescue distro
that boots from CD or USB stick.

In particular, System Rescue CD 3.4.1 (kernel 3.4.32) works fine, but
System Rescue CD 3.4.2 (kernel 3.4.35) does not. Works fine means that
during boot, it switches from 80x25 text mode to high-res text mode just
fine -- I presume this is kernel video mode setting in action? But
System Rescue CD 3.4.2 fails that mode switch: the screen just goes
black. That's not the exact same manifestation as I'm seeing in Ubuntu,
but of course Ubuntu and System Rescue CD have different boot
procedures.

More data points:
  * if I boot System Rescue CD 3.4.2 (kernel 3.4.35) using its framebuffer
console in high resolution option, everything is fine (although X is painfully
slow)
  * if I boot System Rescue CD 3.4.2 using its alt kernel option (kernel
3.7.10), everything works fine

Summary:
  * I'm seeing similar behaviour in two different distros (Ubuntu 12.10 and
System Rescue CD 3.4.2)
  * I can dodge the bug with System Rescue CD either by a) using framebuffer
console or b) booting a newer kernel
This makes me strongly suspect that it's a kernel bug, specifically related to
kernel video mode setting.

The one thing that I don't understand: why is the bug still there if I
boot an older Ubuntu kernel, e.g. 3.5.0-26 or 3.5.0-21 rather than
3.5.0-27? Very strange.

It looks like there are no linux-image packages in quantal-backports, so
trying a newer kernel will be tricky. I guess I'll repartition and try
installing raring in the new partition.

the cursor corruption can be probably solved by using swcursor

besides of that, colors are unreal (too much blue, too much red),
there's a little bit of image corruption in the middle of the background
and sometimes there also was a translucent scientific logo in the middle
everywhere.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1033533] Re: Xorg crashed with SIGABRT: exaMemcpyBox with src=0x0 on nouveau with SW rendering

2013-04-16 Thread Peter Hurley
For me, this bug is easily reproducible (happens within 1 min. of user
session start) on xserver-xorg-video-nouveau 1.0.2

My user X session is compiz + classic + upstream gnome-panel + Radiance
theme on NV84.

The stack trace is nearly identical to the original reporter's (I do get
'Failed to idle' or 'Unexpected page flip' at other times but those seem
unrelated to this bug). This bug has been low-priority for me because it
doesn't seem to affect stability.

This bug is _not_ reproducible with ppa:mlankhorst/ppa xserver-xorg-
video-nouveau 1.0.6+spam~quantal2. Let me know if bisect is required.

2013-04-16 Thread Ubuntu Foundations Team Bug Bot
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that there was an error on your system when
trying to install a particular package. Please execute the following
command, as it will clear your package cache, in a terminal:

sudo apt-get clean

Then try performing the update again. This will likely resolve your
issue, but the failure could be caused by filesystem or memory
corruption. So please also run a fsck on your filesystem(s) and a
memory test. Thanks in advance!

[This is an automated message. I apologize if it reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1169649] [NEW] Xorg freeze after installing nvidia-319

2013-04-16 Thread Max
Public bug reported:

gnome-shell was supposed to start, instead I get static image of my desktop
background. Typing gnome-shell in virtual terminal gives some GLX error and
using optirun works somewhat but it lists a lot of warnings every time I
perform any actions.
Installing nvidia-319 does something to graphics settings. nvidia-313 doesn't
do this and removing nvidia completely causes no problems.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1164093] Re: FFe: new upstream release 9.1.1

2013-04-16 Thread Robert Hooker
** Description changed:

The Ubuntu X team would like to push mesa 9.1.1 for raring. It has been
on a staging ppa for roughly two months now, and we've tested it on a
variety of hw. During this time we've identified a regression with the
Intel driver having a slow blur effect, causing issues with kwin and
Unity dash. This was why we didn't upload it to raring before it got
  fixed upstream.

For me personally, it also fixes a bug in the Intel driver where compiz
hangs after returning from another user session.

Upstream release notes for 9.1 and 9.1.1:

  9.1 New features

Note: some of the new features are only available with certain drivers.

  GL_ANGLE_texture_compression_dxt3
  GL_ANGLE_texture_compression_dxt5
  GL_ARB_ES3_compatibility
  GL_ARB_internalformat_query
  GL_ARB_map_buffer_alignment
  GL_ARB_shading_language_packing
  GL_ARB_texture_buffer_object_rgb32
  GL_ARB_texture_cube_map_array
  GL_EXT_color_buffer_float
  GL_OES_depth_texture_cube_map
OpenGL 3.1 core profile support on Radeon HD2000 up to HD6000 series
Multisample anti-aliasing support on Radeon X1000 series
OpenGL ES 3.0 support on Intel HD Graphics 2000, 2500, 3000, and 4000

  Bug fixes

TBD -- This list is likely incomplete.

  Changes

Removed VAAPI state tracker (unmaintained and broken)
Removed i965's broken hardware implementation of GL_NV_vertex_program
  Removed swrast support for GL_NV_vertex_program
  Removed swrast support for GL_NV_fragment_program
Removed OpenVMS support (unmaintained and broken)
  Removed makedepend build dependency

  9.1.1 New features

  None.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 926637] Re: Xorg crashes to black screen when attaching HDMI Samsung monitor to laptop

2013-04-16 Thread Nils Fredrik Gjerull
I experience a similar problem with my Dell System XPS L322X (Ubuntu
developer laptop). It occurs when I first connect with my TV usin HDMI
(with a DisplayPort adapter) and then connect to an external monitor
using DisplayPort (without an adapter).

This is perhaps a relevant section of syslog:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1157458] Re: visual glitch in Evolution's importance button, etc.

2013-04-16 Thread Benjamin Drung
I updated the xserver-xorg-video-intel and DRM packages to their ppa
:xorg-edgers versions and installed the 3.9.0-994.201304110406 kernel
from drm-intel-nightly.

When booting the drm-intel-nightly kernel, the mouse does not work
(cursor will not move) and the screen corrupts when switching to a tty.
So this drm-intel-nightly kernel is totally unusable. When booting the
raring kernel, everything seems to work so far. I will continue using
the ppa:xorg-edgers packages and see if I still experience visual
gliches.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1162408] Re: little horizontal black lines sporadically appear

2013-04-16 Thread Christof K
My laptop (samsung 900x3e) screen also shows artifacts (mostly
horizontal lines)

It is not only black lines, but also flickering on some of the first
(top) lines of the screen. The artifacts in the top are always visible
when in linux. The lines in the rest of the screen appear for example
when selecting text in the gnome-terminal.

Some of the artifacts even survive reboots, and are visible in windows
after reboot. However, up to now everything is fine when booting windows
directly.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1169762] [NEW] Freezing Ubuntu 12.04 on my Toshiba Satellite

2013-04-16 Thread Maluba
Public bug reported:

I am using ubuntu 12.04 on my Toshiba satellite C850-F32Z.

RAM 4GB
i5

The problem I have is it suffers total freeze, such that the only option I'm
left with is hard reset. It freezes often even when I'm just browsing and or
have a couple of folders open, but todays pissed me off coz by forcing a
restart I lost a lot of valuable information (Thesis) I was working. . It froze
when I tried to cut-paste a 8GB folder. Please, if you can help me on how to
stop these annoying ubu freezes, or atleast how to revert (without pulling the
plug) whenever it freezes I will be greatful.
Thanks

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1071334] Re: NVidia Settings fails to disable the second monitor

2013-04-16 Thread Ant Dickens
I have had this problem. It seems to have been related to a recent
'nvidia-settings' update. The date of the original 'bug' seems to have
been a while ago which worries me whether my issue is related to this
bug but the steps to reproduce are similar. I can't disable second
monitor. Deleting x.org.conf then rebooting worked temporarily but
problem persists.

The Ubuntu X team would like to push mesa 9.1.1 for raring. It has been
