[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1184451] Re: Ubuntu 13.10 random screen freeze while Normal OS activites
I think my system is suffering with the same (or similar) issue. The symptom is that during normal use (Ubuntu 13.10) the system will lock up. The mouse can still be moved but I can't click on any open applications. The sound services will continue to operate (seemingly in the background). Then I wait for about 10 to 20 seconds and the windows will kind of go nuts (and that's a technical term!) flashing all the windows up seemingly in a random order until it finally shows just the wall paper (background) and then settles down with a crash report. At that point, the system is either completely back to normal, or partially OK (the missing aspect being the menu bars of all open applications - in which case a re-boot is necessary). The system is running a dual Intel CPUs (E2220 - 2.4GHz) with an Nvidia GeForce 7100 graphics card. It's a 64-bit install with 4.7Gb RAM. I have already installed the current nvidia drivers and tried to remove nouveau but that seemed to have already been removed. The crash report states: ExecutablePath: /usr/bin/compiz ProcCmdline: compiz Title: compiz crashed with SIGSEGV ApportVersion: 2.12.5-0ubuntu2.2 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 3.11.0-14.21-generic 3.11.7 SegvAnalysis: Segfault happened at: 0x7f963629b960 __memmove_ssse3+64: movdqu (%rsi),%xmm0 PC (0x7f963629b960) ok source (%rsi) (0x7fcdcd19e000) not located in a known VMA region (needed readable region)! destination %xmm0 ok SegvReason: reading unknown VMA SourcePackage: unity StacktraceAddressSignature: /usr/bin/compiz:11:x86_64:/usr/lib/nvidia-304/libnvidia-glcore.so.304.117+13e0b04:/usr/lib/nvidia-304/libnvidia-glcore.so.304.117+12dce1c:/usr/lib/nvidia-304/libnvidia-glcore.so.304.117+10b6e91:/usr/lib/nvidia-304/libnvidia-glcore.so.304.117+13910f1:/usr/lib/nvidia-304/libnvidia-glcore.so.304.117+1191b1b:/usr/lib/nvidia-304/libnvidia-glcore.so.304.117+12e431d:/usr/lib/nvidia-304/libGL.so.304.117+70a15:/usr/lib/compiz/libopengl.so+387a1:/usr/lib/compiz/libopengl.so+1e90e:/usr/lib/compiz/libopengl.so+1f2a5:/usr/lib/compiz/libopengl.so+2b9d9:/usr/lib/compiz/libopengl.so+1eeeb:/usr/lib/compiz/libopengl.so+2ee14:/usr/lib/compiz/libopengl.so+25b6a:/usr/lib/compiz/libdecor.so+1c4a9 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1184451 Title: Ubuntu 13.10 random screen freeze while Normal OS activites To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/1184451/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1058040] Re: fglrx-installer not working with AMD Radeon/Mobility Radeon HD 2000-4000 cards in Quantal
G'day Andrew and Alan. According to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/LTSEnablementStack if you install the 12.04.0 or 12.04.1 point release and update you will remain on the original Precise stack and not be updated to the Quantal or Raring HWE stacks. 12.04.3 should have the Raring HWE stack with kernel 3.8.x, which should be more performant than the 3.5.x kernel in the Quantal As for removing the HWE stacks, I have not tried to do so but there are some guidelines at http://askubuntu.com/questions/265999/how-to-remove- kernel-lts-enablement-stack fglrx is notoriously bad on linux, so if you need UVD support or better power management (DPM), a better option might be to install the 3.12.6 kernel PPA available at http://http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel- ppa/mainline/ - instructions on how to install and uninstall it are available at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to fglrx-installer in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1058040 Title: fglrx-installer not working with AMD Radeon/Mobility Radeon HD 2000-4000 cards in Quantal To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-release-notes/+bug/1058040/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1058040] Re: fglrx-installer not working with AMD Radeon/Mobility Radeon HD 2000-4000 cards in Quantal
I neglected to say that to use the new DPM power management for the AMD/ATI Radeon you will need to select it at boot by adding radeon.dpm=1 to your GRUB kernel boot options as described at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2/Troubleshooting#Editing_the_GRUB_2_Menu_During_Boot If you have R700 or newer hardware (other than APUs) you will also need to install the latest AMD graphics microcode (ucode) files to /lib/firmware/radeon These are available at http://people.freedesktop.org/~agd5f/radeon_ucode/ Get the version ending in smc. R700 basically means Radeon HD 4000 series and newer. However note that according to Wikipedia and http://xorg.freedesktop.org/wiki/RadeonFeature/#index5h2 the Mobility Radeon HD 4225/4250 is a RV620 chip, so anyone with one of those shouldn't need the updated firmware files. Unlike the older dynpm method, the new DPM method works with multiple monitors and there shouldn't be any flickering as the performance level changes are handled by dedicated hardware rather than the driver. The currently under-development 3.13 upstream kernel enables DPM by default (without needing the radeon.dpm=1 boot parameter I mentioned above) for Radeon HD 4000 through Radeon HD 7000 series graphics processors but with some specific ASICs being excluded. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to fglrx-installer in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1058040 Title: fglrx-installer not working with AMD Radeon/Mobility Radeon HD 2000-4000 cards in Quantal To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-release-notes/+bug/1058040/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1219708] Re: Asus synaptics/elantech touchpad not detected during or after fresh install
I've recently purchased an ASUS model X551CA. This is quite recent and becoming quite popular. I've got exactly the same issue: teh Elantech Touchpad is correctly managed by the kernel and Ubuntu, but not seen completely by Xorg. Teh consequence is that in System, Settings the tab and items related to touchpad (e.g. dual finger scroll) aren't available, and the touchpad is just seen as a PS2 Mouse. I've currently a kernel higher than 3.0 installed, as I'm on Ubuntu 12.04LTS 64bit; I've also tried the same with an Ubuntu 13.10 via pendrive and got the same behavior. So I can EXCLUDE that the 13.xx resolves this issue. I've already asked ASUS support for help, but i doubt that I'll get any from them. I've tested with another PC the pendrive I then used on the ASUS and it worked OK (pendrive is OK). I've checked the BIOS options on the ASUS touchpad and I could DISABLE it OK (then not even a PS/2 mouse- like device was detected, as expected), so I can exclude that the device is disabled by BIOS. I believe that users being on a Long Term Support release of UBUNTU expect that a fundamental item that is part of that distribution works fine and if not gets supported. Please let me know what I can do to promote this and help on solution. You have been subscribed to a public bug: Since upgrading to saucy, I've had individual characters render improperly. Unfortunately, taking a screenshot clears the corruption. Selecting the text, scrolling in the terminal (which I imagine redraws anew instead of scrolling a rendered pane), or any number of things that would trigger a re-display of a glyph seems to clear it. Incidentally I see occasional corrupted glyphs appear in this text input box as I type, and they will appear with one keystroke and disappear with the next. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1242767] Re: 10de:03d0 [HP Pavilion Slimline s5310y Desktop PC ] Freeze trying to exit gnome-control-center
penalvch, I don't have IOMMU in my BIOS, but according to this link: https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/kernel-bugs/2010-September.txt I added it to my linux string. Also, the freeze happens not just using Systems Settings, but also at unknow times. Usually some sort of graphics usage. Also using the Dash at times will freeze. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-nouveau in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1242767 Title: 10de:03d0 [HP Pavilion Slimline s5310y Desktop PC ] Freeze trying to exit gnome-control-center To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-nouveau/+bug/1242767/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1242767] Re: 10de:03d0 [HP Pavilion Slimline s5310y Desktop PC ] Freeze trying to exit gnome-control-center
penalvch, I just tried using the added IOMMU to my linux string as per the link above: iommu=soft swiotlb=131072 Of course with nomodeset it never fails. I then remove nomodeset but kept iommu=soft swiotlb=131072, and it never fails ( or hasn't yet). Apparently newer boards have the IOMMU on the BIOS, my Narra6 does not. Can the current nouveau compensate for the lack of no hardware IOMMU? [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1033533] Re: Xorg crashed with SIGABRT: exaMemcpyBox with src=0x0 on nouveau with SW rendering
I have had relative success (though not tested long term) by enabling noapic and nomodeset as kernel command line options. Without those two, my X would freeze up almost instantly at the login screen. With those two, I was able to boot, log in, and run through multiple windows (including one full 1080p video playback). However, all of this was accomplished on Ubuntu 13.10. Edit /etc/default/grub and include: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash noapic nomodeset Then run sudo update-grub and reboot Since then, things seem to be running quite well. Here are the nvidia packages I have installed: iB nvidia-319-updates - NVIDIA binary Xorg driver, kernel module a i A nvidia-settings-319-updates - Tool for configuring the NVIDIA graphics d -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-nouveau in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1033533 Title: Xorg crashed with SIGABRT: exaMemcpyBox with src=0x0 on nouveau with SW rendering To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-nouveau/+bug/1033533/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
