[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1294391] [NEW] Screen freeze during use of chrome/chromium
Public bug reported: I am using ubuntu 14.04 64-bit. (All my packages were up-to-date as of about 1 week ago.) My hardware is an Acer C720 (Intel graphics). The symptoms of the problem is the display completely stops updating, except the mouse cursor continues to move. Clicking and any keypresses have no effect. The system remains in this state for about 15-60 seconds, then it recovers and goes back to normal. The problem most commonly happens when using chrome or chromium to do any kind of intesive hardware-accelerated rendering. Typically a youtube video or and HTML5 game with lots of animations. The problem tends to happen during periods of high CPU usage. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1294107] [NEW] XU 13.10 causing frequent laptop (acer 5620) hard lockups.
You have been subscribed to a public bug: since upgrading from LTS to XU 13.04 & then XU 13.10 the acer laptop is experiencing frequent hard lockups. one source of lockup has been GL screensaver, so I turned it off. Still the lockups happen Power management for AC is also off. The laptop does not run too hot, and the lid is up Is there a daemon that can catch the source of the lockups? I'm installing gnome system log viewer and are there log search terms to quickly find the trouble? I've checked the system with chkrootkit but it has a fatal flaw Checking `aliens'.../bin/egrep: /dev/.bootchart/proc/sysrq-trigger: Input/output error the same machine does not lock up under Linux Mint 15 MATE. kernel 3.8.0.xx Memory is tested often. 2GB Hard disk has no errors and is tested monthly System has been put through "crashme" and CPU intensive operations in order to raise tempurature, system remains stable. Most likely times of lockups are: - system left idle on AC and power manager is set to no suspend & GL screensaver activated (will lockup less often with no screensaver activated) - view webm or flash videos via browser and have more than ~ 800MB RAM usage - run glxgears full screen with some RAM usage resulting hard lockup shows venetian blinds effect on screen. ** Affects: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: bot-comment -- XU 13.10 causing frequent laptop (acer 5620) hard lockups. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1294107 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in Ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1293425] Re: [Dell Vostro 3550] Display resolution keeps switching with external monitor connected
I am now using Ubuntu 14.04 from the link above. At the time of starting this bug report I was using 13.04 (raring) and then also 13.10 (saucy) but the problem was the same with both. Will see how will it be with 14.04. So far I have noticed one difference though! If I did cat /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch on 13.04 and 13.10 I got: 0:IGD:+:Pwr::00:02.0 1:DIS: :Off::01:00.0 With 14.04 I get somethin a bit different: 0:IGD:+:Pwr::00:02.0 1:DIS: :DynOff::01:00.0 Notice the Dyn in second line. This is ofcourse before installing AMD drivers. After I install those, vgaswitcheroo is no longer there. For now, I will not install AMD drivers on 14.04 to see if the problem will come up out-of-the-box. If I don't see any troubles for a whole week, I will install AMD drivers and provide feedback about both. If problems come up before, I will install AMD drivers right after. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1293425 Title: [Dell Vostro 3550] Display resolution keeps switching with external monitor connected To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1293425/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 907381] Re: [Dell Vostro 3550] Display resolution keeps switching with external monitor connected
Lee Willis, I was having the very same issue with fglrx - corrupted display, barely usabe, clicking didn't work, even after barely possible to target what you wanted to click, etc. However, I came to this fix that works - run Terminal with keyboard CTRL+ALT+T and do sudo su and then xrandr --output VGA1 --auto --right-of LVDS1 --output VGA1 --auto --scale 1.0001x1.0001 After that, everything becomes usable again. However, this does NOT fix the issue with random switching of resolutions/monitors/mirroring! That is still present. Now, I am testing with Ubuntu 14.04 for my bug report and will provide feedback when I have used it for long enough. Oh, Christopher M. Penalver, I have seen your info that this laptop had new BIOS released - the A12 and I flashed it today. I still had the exact same problem on Ubuntu 13.10 (saucy) and as I said, I will report (in my bug report) how version 14.04 goes... -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/907381 Title: [Dell Vostro 3550] Display resolution keeps switching with external monitor connected To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/907381/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1293425] Re: [Dell Vostro 3550] Display resolution keeps switching with external monitor connected
** Description changed: - My laptop is DELL Vostro 3550. BIOS A11. - If I use external monitor and extend my desktop to both the built-in laptop display and the external LCD, the display settings are auto-changed by the system. This may include: - - Resetting to "mirrored" displays at 1024x768 - - Resetting to a single display on the laptop panel - - Resetting to a single display on the external monitor + If I use external monitor and extend my desktop to both the built-in + laptop display and the external LCD, the display settings are auto- + changed by the system. This may include resetting to a "mirrored" + display at 1024x768, a single display on the laptop panel, or a single + display on the external monitor. - I am finding though that the issue is worse by far if I use AMD GPU than if I use Intel GPU. I switch between them with AMD CCC, however the issue is present even if I never install AMD drivers and just use Intel GPU out-of-the-box. - So, if I use AMD GPU my monitors keep switching between resolutions, mirroring switches on and off very frequently - like more times every minute. If I use Intel GPU I can go a day without spontaneous switching of resolutions and/or mirroring displays, sometimes it happens like 2 or 3 times per day. + If I use just the AMD GPU via the AMD CCC, my monitors keep switching + between resolutions, mirroring switches on and off every minute or so. + + WORKAROUND: If I switch to just the Intel GPU via the AMD GPU, or never + install AMD drivers and just use the Intel GPU out-of-the-box, I can go + a day without spontaneous switching of resolutions and/or mirroring + displays, sometimes it happens like 2 or 3 times per day.
