[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1325940] [NEW] Desktop sometimes comes up with undisplayable screen resolution
Public bug reported: Hello, the PC from which I'm sending this report sometimes fails to boot into the desktop properly (which desktop environment doesn't seem to matter). In the failure case the following happens: - The Plymouth Ubuntu splash gets displayed, but it looks distorted. Flickering horizontal artifacts are shown all over the screen, it looks a bit like a CRT Television with low signal. - When the desktop is loaded (via autologin), one can see short glimpses of its wallpaper, but after a few second the screen becomes black and remains that way. The monitor _does_ seem to receive a signal though. - It is possible to switch to TTYs and to use them, but they show similar artifacts like the Plymouth logo. - If I query the display information on the monitor's OSD when the screen is distorted, it reports a resolution of 1681x1050 or 1683x1050, which is 1-3 pixel bigger than the native horizontal resolution of the 22 LCD screen. Switching between different resolutions via entering 'xrandr --size 1024x768' blindly, followed by 'xrandr --size 1680x1050' brings up the native resolution properly. This does not happen on every boot, only in ~10-15% of the cases. I was not able to find any pattern so far in the occurence of this bug. The only thing I observed is that it _never_ happens when Windows XP is started, thus my assumption is that the bug is related to the xserver- xorg-video-radeon driver. I tried to specify the correct resolution explicitly on the kernel command line(adding video=DVI-I-1:1680x1050 ) but this has no positive effect. The monitor is connected via DVI. Below is a video attached that tries to show how the TTYs look when this bug occurs. Notice the abnormal blue lines, which are constantly flickering. Kind regards, Jan ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 14.04 Package: xserver-xorg-video-radeon 1:7.3.0-1ubuntu3.1 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 3.13.0-27.50-generic 3.13.11 Uname: Linux 3.13.0-27-generic x86_64 ApportVersion: 2.14.1-0ubuntu3.2 Architecture: amd64 CurrentDesktop: XFCE Date: Tue Jun 3 13:23:38 2014 InstallationDate: Installed on 2014-04-22 (41 days ago) InstallationMedia: Lubuntu 14.04 LTS Trusty Tahr - Release amd64 (20140416.2) SourcePackage: xserver-xorg-video-ati UpgradeStatus: No upgrade log present (probably fresh install) ** Affects: xserver-xorg-video-ati (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: amd64 apport-bug trusty ** Attachment added: TTY-distorted.ogg https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1325940/+attachment/4124733/+files/TTY-distorted.ogg -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-ati in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1325940 Title: Desktop sometimes comes up with undisplayable screen resolution To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-ati/+bug/1325940/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1326048] [NEW] Xubuntu 14.04 screen flickers (VGA: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07))
You have been subscribed to a public bug: Hi all, after a fresh install of Xubuntu 14.04 LTS the screen flickers continuously. The VGA is :: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07) The problem didn't take place on earlier versions of Xubuntu (or at least it wasn't as visible since I didn't notice it) Now it is very disturbing and tiring for the eye. It is much more visible with brighter screen and seems more visible immediately after log in, but it might be because after a while the eye gets used to it. It might be worth noting that I do not have any option to change the refresh rate from 59.1Hz ** Affects: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: flickering intel screen vga xfce xorg xubuntu -- Xubuntu 14.04 screen flickers (VGA: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07)) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1326048 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in Ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1324638] [NEW] Grub and possible kernel issues when installing ubuntu on Quad core with Radeon graphics
You have been subscribed to a public bug: I bought a new HP PC (details below) intending to replace W8.1 with Ubuntu. Boot failed with both 12.04 LTS and 14.04LTS. The details below are pretty much the same for both. The system gets as far as rebooting into 14.04 after installation from .iso image on USB disk. I am running grub 2.02~beta 2.9. Ubuntu is supposed to install successfully. When you start up (without USB disk present), it offers a grey screen with a purple border 10-20px wide all the way round. It then puts up a tty screen with the login, then after a while comes up with: Your screen graphics and input device settings could not be detected correctly. You will need to configure them yourself. Hit OK It then says what would you like to do? and offers a menu list the first of which is: * Run in low graphics mode for just one session. There are a list of other options, but these are greyed out. Hit OK System freezes (no movement after 15 mins or so. Looks like grub/Ubuntu can't recognise any I/O devices. It should be happy with the Radeon graphics shouldn't it. I believe that the touchpad is standard too. How can I sort this?? TIA BTW before anyone suggests h/w failure it runs W8.1 just fine :-( - if you like that sort of thing. It bombed on Mint16, too. - System details: HP Pavilion Notebook AMD A10-5745MAPU + Radeon Graphics + 8GB + 1TB disk Bios is Insyde F.13 (Insyde H20 setup utility R3.7) I have got UEFI running because 14.04 is supposed to be able to handle it. Legacy boot is disabled. The grub partition is at about 1 MB, the main partition is about 800 GB and the swap is about 17.8GB - For the full discussion and why I think this is a bug see: https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/249309 in particular my solution at the end contains detail. ** Affects: xorg (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: bot-comment -- Grub and possible kernel issues when installing ubuntu on Quad core with Radeon graphics https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1324638 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg in Ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1314367] Re: Flickering with Ubuntu 14.04 and nvidia card reappeared
It's a Compiz problem. I figured this out about a week after I installed 14.04 (which was a week after 14.04 was released). To fix it, you get CompizConfig Settings Manager (ccsm) and you go down to Workarounds in the Utility Category and check the box that says Force full screen redraws (buffer swap) on repaint. This will fix the problems as it forces the system to draw only the latest info and discard of any old buffers that cause it to flicker between old and new draws. I recently reset unity and I was trying to find out how I fixed it and then I remembered while I was on this page, so I decided to tell you guys how to fix it and maybe help Canonical developers fix this annoying problem. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1314367 Title: Flickering with Ubuntu 14.04 and nvidia card reappeared To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1314367/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1325137] Re: bugs
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears to be a regular (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy. Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find. ** Information type changed from Private Security to Public -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1325137 Title: bugs To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1325137/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
