[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1354841] Re: Screen corruption (characters are drawn as black squares)
apport information ** Tags added: apport-collected ** Description changed: Sometimes, the characters are rendered as black squares (cf attachment). I couldn't find any event in the systems logs that could explain that. I can stop the bug by changing the anti-aliasing options in the system settings (enabled / disabled, level of hinting) and restarting the applications, but the squares can come back later on, and I have to repeat the operation. The bug almost exclusively happens with firefox and thunderbird, though krunner is also affected (but not other kde apps). I'm not using many GTK applications, but I can also see the bug with unison. It used to happen in 13.10 as well, and upgrading to 14.04.1 hasn't improved the situation ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 14.04 Package: xorg 1:7.7+1ubuntu8 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 3.13.0-32.57-generic 3.13.11.4 Uname: Linux 3.13.0-32-generic x86_64 ApportVersion: 2.14.1-0ubuntu3.3 Architecture: amd64 CurrentDesktop: KDE Date: Sun Aug 10 14:03:25 2014 InstallationDate: Installed on 2011-01-10 (1307 days ago) InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat - Release amd64 (20101007) ProcEnviron: LANGUAGE= PATH=(custom, no user) XDG_RUNTIME_DIR=set LANG=en_GB.UTF-8 SHELL=/bin/bash SourcePackage: xorg Symptom: display UpgradeStatus: Upgraded to trusty on 2014-08-06 (3 days ago) + --- + ApportVersion: 2.14.1-0ubuntu3.6 + Architecture: amd64 + CompizPlugins: No value set for `/apps/compiz-1/general/screen0/options/active_plugins' + CompositorRunning: kwin + CurrentDesktop: KDE + DistUpgraded: 2014-08-06 14:32:56,683 DEBUG enabling apt cron job + DistroCodename: trusty + DistroRelease: Ubuntu 14.04 + DistroVariant: kubuntu + DkmsStatus: + virtualbox, 4.3.10, 3.13.0-40-generic, x86_64: installed + virtualbox-guest, 4.3.10, 3.13.0-40-generic, x86_64: installed + ExtraDebuggingInterest: No + GraphicsCard: + Intel Corporation Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:0046] (rev 02) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller]) +Subsystem: Dell Device [1028:0428] + InstallationDate: Installed on 2011-01-10 (1407 days ago) + InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat - Release amd64 (20101007) + MachineType: Dell Inc. Yes it still happens from time to time on 14.04 Actually, I think it didn't happen at all in Sept-Oct, but it happened a couple of times in Nov. It coincides with the reboot I did at the beginning of Nov to upgrade the system, but I can't tell if it's related to the bug due to its highly intermittent nature -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1354841 Title: Screen corruption (characters are drawn as black squares) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1354841/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1314367] Re: Flickering with Ubuntu 14.04 and nvidia card reappeared
Some status update: I enabled Don't wait for video sync and Force full screen redraws from compizconfig. I've not yet experienced the flickering problem. Before the compizconfig modification the problem was severe in gnome image viewer, right after rebooting. I have never seen problems as severe as in Robert's video: for me, the flickering never occurred between different windows. The flickering occurred mostly in gnome image viewer and gnome terminal: for example, when I exited vim, I could see the vim screen still there, painted over by the command line prompt and the flickering was the same rate as the cursor blink rate. It was worse in image viewer however, making it almost unusable. Even though the flickering happens inside window borders I would still rate this very severe bug, disabling common out-of-the-box media functionality. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1314367 Title: Flickering with Ubuntu 14.04 and nvidia card reappeared To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1314367/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

But I had to create myself the patch from your edit to my the distro package (synaptics 1.7.4) and a lot of things are differents between this version and 1.8.1. I see that you partially take the code from the patch which allows the thumb resting option. But have you found a way to avoid the mouse acting crazy during a drag n drop ? It is our last step before having something ok. If so, it would be nice to know what part of the code can fix that and I will create a patch and deb packages for everyone. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-input-synaptics in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1026046 Title: Missing support for thumb resting on bottom of clickpad To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/xserver-xorg-input-synaptics/+bug/1026046/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

M, as per http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/product-support/product/latitude-e5510/drivers an update to your BIOS is available (A16). If you update to this following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BIOSUpdate does it change anything? If it doesn't, could you please both specify what happened, and provide the output of the following terminal command: sudo dmidecode -s bios-version sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date For more on BIOS updates and linux, please see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette . Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful. As well, you don't have to create a new bug report. Your feedback will aid us getting this update out to other Ubuntu users. If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug, mentioning the version of the package you tested, and change the tag from verification-needed to verification-done. If it does not fix the bug for you, please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to verification-failed. In either case, details of your testing will help us make a better decision. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1026046] Re: Missing support for thumb resting on bottom of clickpad
Hi Pierre. Thank you for taking the time to create a patch. My biggest change was moving the following up in the HandleState function, so the low level state is corrected *before* doing button detection (this removed the quirk that depended on the order in which fingers hit the touchpad): //Correct HW state by throwing out fingers outside of the active area inside_active_area = FALSE; hw-numFingers = 0; for (int i = 0; i hw-num_mt_mask; i++) { ValuatorMask *f1; Bool mt_inside; double x1, y1; if (hw-slot_state[i] == SLOTSTATE_EMPTY || hw-slot_state[i] == SLOTSTATE_CLOSE) continue; f1 = hw-mt_mask[i]; x1 = valuator_mask_get_double(f1, 0); y1 = valuator_mask_get_double(f1, 1); mt_inside = is_inside_active_area(priv, x1, y1); if (!mt_inside) { hw-slot_state[i] = SLOTSTATE_EMPTY; continue; } if (!inside_active_area) { inside_active_area = TRUE; hw-x = x1; hw-y = y1; } hw-numFingers++; } You may notice that I removed the check to see if the touchpad is a clickpad - I did this because it did not look like the code was being executed. You could put that back in (turned out I was not actually replacing the installed driver when I did make install). Secondly, I also removed something odd from is_inside_active_area. That function now looks like: static Bool is_inside_active_area(SynapticsPrivate * priv, int x, int y) { if ((priv-synpara.area_left_edge != 0) (x priv-synpara.area_left_edge)) return FALSE; else if ((priv-synpara.area_right_edge != 0) (x priv-synpara.area_right_edge)) return FALSE; if ((priv-synpara.area_top_edge != 0) (y priv-synpara.area_top_edge)) return FALSE; else if ((priv-synpara.area_bottom_edge != 0) (y priv-synpara.area_bottom_edge)) return FALSE; return TRUE; } I did this mainly because the code that was there was not consistent with how the function is being used now - it would return true in circumstances when the source finger was NOT in the active area but if something else was (which could mess up the finger count). I don't think I tried the first change without the second, but it is certainly plausible that the second change could fix the type of behavior you are talking about. I have not seen such behavior on my machine with these changes. It seems suspicious that the patched driver would result in no changes. I would make sure that you are actually running your custom version of the driver and not the stock version. Try to break something deliberately - I would suggest putting: if (hw-numFingers 1) hw-numFingers = 1; After the first change and try to run the new driver. If two-finger scroll still works you know that you are running the old driver. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1386721] Re: Graphics Slow After Upgrade 14.04 - 14.10
Affects me too. I have Unity and 14.10 upgraded from 14.04, Dell E7240 notebook with Core i7-4600U and integrated Intel Haswell-ULT video. First the problem seemed to appear after upgrade when I decided to try unity8 and installed it packages (the graphics remained slow even when I was in classic Unity session), and everything disappeared, when I removed unity8. Now the problem reappeared, and I found unity8 installed again. So I removed it with all the stuff depended on it and the is likely went away again.
