[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1453742] Re: xorg started to systematically crash after every suspend/resume
teo1978, thank you for your quick response. Regarding using UEFI, it's strongly advised not using it unless you absolutely must, as noted in https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEFI . Regarding dual-booting, also strongly advised not to do it. If you must use Windows in an ongoing basis (some legacy application that can't utilize WINE or you can't use another program) just virtualize it via virtualbox and save yourself the hassle. Regarding regressions, if the code changes in kernel/xorg stack require a more precise BIOS implementation or was providing some BIOS hack WORKAROUND, that being reverted is not considered a bug in the kernel/xorg but in the BIOS. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1453742 Title: xorg started to systematically crash after every suspend/resume To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1453742/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1453742] Re: xorg started to systematically crash after every suspend/resume
versus take the hour out of your time to do as previously requested (which in itself is quite simple) It's not just the time, it's the risk of breaking everything. When I first installed Ubuntu, in dual boot with Windows by following Ubuntu's official documentation and the onscreen installation steps, nothing worked out of the box, and I had to tweak things a lot with BIOS UEFI settings (again, all officla ubuntu guides giving instructions that would either not work or not correspond with reality) until I finally got the dual boot to work as it should have worked out of the box. So now I'm afraid that updating the bios may screw up everything (just like simply upgrading ubuntu from 14.04 to 14.10 screwed up grub rendering the system unbootable which fortunately I could repair) Anyway, regarding the issue at hand, remember that this is a regression and hence the fact that the bios is outdated should not be of any relevance (and actually is never a good reason for ignoring bugs in the first place as I already pointed out many times in other reports) given that the issue was not present prior to recent updates with the same bios.
Please don't be ridiculous. This has started happening recently (by the way, I have rebooted several times and it keeps happening, not systematically at every suspend/resume but very often). This didn't happen before, and the bios I'm using is the same, so it is clearly a REGRESSION in some recent update. Whether or not it is *triggered* by a bug in the bios, if xorg crashes it has a bug; otherwise it would handle the error. And the fact that this didn't happen before demonstrate that whatever triggers the crash can, and hence must, be avoided. I won't update my BIOS until Ubuntu offers a way of doing it in a simple way without relying on another OS. Machines with outdated bios exist out there and they'll always exist. Ubuntu must either support them or offer a safe and easy way to upgrade the bios.

Regarding using UEFI, it's strongly advised not using it unless you absolutely must, as noted in https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEFI I'm not sure what exactly I did with BIOS settings but perhaps it was disabling UEFI. Regarding dual-booting, also strongly advised not to do it. That's simply ridiculous. Regarding regressions, if the code changes in kernel/xorg stack require a more precise BIOS implementation or was providing some BIOS hack WORKAROUND, that being reverted is not considered a bug in the kernel/xorg That's a bad polict. If that's the approach, Canonical should change the way Ubuntu is marketed, because it does not reflect reality. Quoting from http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop Complete Ubuntu comes with everything you need to run your organisation, school, home or enterprise. Accessible Computing is for everyone regardless of nationality, gender or disability. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1453742] Re: xorg started to systematically crash after every suspend/resume
teo1978, thank you for the quick follow up. I won't update my BIOS until Ubuntu offers a way of doing it in a simple way without relying on another OS. Just to advise, this will more than likely not happen anytime soon (on the order of years). In the PC industry, the responsibility of the BIOS update mechanism is upon the computer OEM (in this case Acer) and the OS vendor they have a formal partnership with (in this case Microsoft). However, if they don't formally support your OS (like with Ubuntu), or they don't have an alternative update method as a courtesy (burn update to ISO and reboot into this environment, etc.) then the next best known good working solution is temporarily install the OS the OEM supports, and then update the BIOS as they intended when they sold you the computer. At this point, you have put yourself in an impossible situation in the short-medium term because you would rather wait for years for something that may never materialize, versus take the hour out of your time to do as previously requested (which in itself is quite simple). If you want to wait, that's fine, but I wouldn't hold your breath.

Luckily I retained the old 3.2.0-83-generic-64 kernel from 12.04. It seems that it is a kernel related bug since both 3.13 and 3.16 kernel freeze the screen a few seconds after the boot. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1389732 Title: The computer freeze randomly To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1389732/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1432194] Re: Graphics unstable on Ubuntu 14.04 and 14.10 using Intel HD Graphics 5500
I've got a Gigabyte Brix GB-BXi7H-5500. This computer only has HDMI and mini DisplayPort outputs, no VGA. All the Desktop systems I have tried to install (Ubuntu, Fedora, etc) have all failed because the screen is totally unreadable, with graphics flashing all over the place and nothing sensible to be seen. I managed to install Ubuntu 14.10 server and installed xinit and twm (yes, those ooollddd ways of doing X!). A barely usable system as long as only xterm was used. Trying to run e.g. firefox was a total mess (photo attached). So it's not a window manager issue, nor a GUI toolkit issue: this was absolutely minimal X. Updating linux kernel to 4.0.2 didn't help. Ubuntu 15.04 was no good - triple mouse pointers against a magenta screen. Fix #32 worked and I can play 1080p movies such as Big Buck Bunny (a bit jerky as no i965 loaded). But it only works once I have the server install done - doesn't help Desktop installs. I've also logged this as bug 90401 on bugs.freedesktop.org as HDMI i915 driver broken on Gigabyte Brix GB-BXi7H-5500 *-display description: VGA compatible controller product: Broadwell-U Integrated Graphics vendor: Intel Corporation physical id: 2 bus info: pci@:00:02.0 version: 09 width: 64 bits clock: 33MHz capabilities: msi pm vga_controller bus_master cap_list rom configuration: driver=i915 latency=0 resources: irq:63 memory:f600-f6ff memory:e000-efff ioport:f000(size=64) Linux desktop-14-10 3.16.0-37-generic #51-Ubuntu SMP Tue May 5 13:45:59 UTC 2015 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux ** Attachment added: Photo of Firefox on Gigabyte 5500 https://bugs.launchpad.net/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/1432194/+attachment/4398515/+files/firefox.jpg -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1432194 Title: Graphics unstable on Ubuntu 14.04 and 14.10 using Intel HD Graphics 5500 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/1432194/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 223774]
I think the original bug report here (NoDCC causes hang) has been fixed. I am currently testing the trident driver on an ancient laptop here, and it has many bugs, but this isn't one of them. The vesa mode doesn't work, and most importantly auto-detection doesn't work. Manually writing your own Xorg configuration and assigning driver as trident however, works fine. What you need is: Driver trident Option AccelMethod EXA At that point you get the proper response from Xorg: (WW) TRIDENT(0): Option NoDCC is not used So it simply skips NoDCC in the config file and in turn skips the hang. I will be opening another bug report regarding detection. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-trident in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/223774 Title: NoDDC option doesn't work for trident cyberblade/i1 resulting in system lockup To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-release-notes/+bug/223774/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
