[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1666357] [NEW] Xorg freeze when returning from fullscreen Youtube is in play mode

2017-02-20 Thread GSJ
Public bug reported:

Hi,

Unfortunately, I've been having numerous problems with Ubuntu 16.04 LTS
user interface, to the point where I am looking to give up on Ubuntu,
after using it for number of years.

In the last week, I've to reboot the system number of times, either
because of the "freeze bug" or "gpu hang", see
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1656658.

Any help or pointers would be very much appreciated. If need be, I am
willing to help the developers in any way to dig further into the system
for the root cause.

Brandon MacEachern:
>"This issue was not a problem before 16.04, and so far since being on 16.10,
>it's gone away again."

That largely addresses my request from #5, and gives me additional,
helpful information regarding a regression.

Given the issue is addressed in 16.10, and folks who use 16.04 may
utilize the 16.10+ kernel/xorg stack from
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/LTSEnablementStack, this is considered
Fix Released as defined in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Status.

Also, while I understand your passion towards this issue given your
friend, they way you are expressing it comes across as abrasive, and not
welcoming to folks who take an interest in the problem.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1657875] Re: Google Chrome flickers badly on web pages

2017-02-20 Thread Brandon MacEachern
Let me break it down for you, the BIOS is NOT out of date in regards to
any of the Intel video BIOS portions. Version 2.27 has the same Intel
video BIOS extension that 2.29 contains. It is foolish to update BIOS's
just because you can, generally you do them because something is broken,
but in this case, the broken portion is NOT because of the BIOS at all.
If the devs over there at Canonical had a brain on their head, you could
have easily determined this by grabbing any of your same CPU/GPU type
laptops and ran 16.04 with Chrome. In fact, many people have already
explained this countless times only to have had their time wasted.

Fact is, Xorg people already now know about the bug, and know it is a
fault with Xorg, but sadly, they have not fully found the issue as to
why. So this bug report is a bust. My time was in fact wasted, and yes
I will call out and accuse those who make people go through hoops that
will not resolve it. You are the dev, correct?

So once again, the portion of the BIOS that needs to be update, IS
already up to date, none of the other fixes are related to this, and
being Xorg already knows that a BIOS update won't resolve it, I refuse
to update my BIOS for no reason other than your explained reason which
IS the invalid step to pursue.

This bug IS a personal matter because the flickering almost gave my
epileptic friend a seizure, and you bet I won't have my time wasted. It
took almost 10 days to get a response from you, it's taken MANY others
months to get any response. This issue was not a problem before 16.04,
and so far since being on 16.10, it's gone away again. It IS a 16.04
problem, and for an LTS release, you WILL fix the problem, either be it
by backporting the Xorg drivers, or anything you need to do.

I am done with this bug report, go fix it yourself. I already fixed it
because my workaround IS valid. And for my one last remaining same
laptop on 16.04, it has permanently fixed the issue, and works faster
with higher framerates in GL games.

PS: I am a long time Linux user, for 17 years in fact. This isn't my
first go at getting things fixed, but I'll be damned if I sit here and
have a dev who IS wasting my time, and not familiar with the Xorg bug
reports on this same matter.

Goodbye, I'm done here. I'll setup my own PPA to fix this issue.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1657875] Re: Google Chrome flickers badly on web pages

2017-02-20 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Brandon MacEachern, to advise, if you would care to review the Lenovo
website, your BIOS is clearly outdated.

Also, a WORKAROUND is not a fix, and wouldn't be eligible to create a
patch from.

Despite this, to fix your issue in the default configuration (i.e. no
WORKAROUNDs), it is most helpful to developers for you to test the
latest version of Ubuntu (live environment would be helpful). If
reproducible, then it can be upstreamed for review. If you can't, that's
fine. Fixes come out as a matter of course in development.
Unfortunately, the issue you are experiencing won't be fixed that much
faster.

Finally, accusing someone of wasting time, attacking them, and ordering
them around doesn't really motivate anyone to want to help with your
problem.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1655752] Re: Xorg crashed with SIGABRT in libinput_device_config_tap_get_finger_count()

2017-02-20 Thread TJ
@Robie: "It looks like your backport also pulled in upstream commit
116cddba69b37246db564c1ddf772c0144c589f0. Was this intentional?"

No, from what I can see the backported commit
72bac84df9ce72f2baf730655ecc23f1692d1e64 removes and re-applies that
specific change too.

@Timo: My local package version is higher than that in -proposed so it
hadn't been applied locally. I'll report back after the next
logout/reboot cycle.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1663989] Re: Screen flickering

2017-02-20 Thread Dave Long
Confirmed that the bug is fixed in the 4.10 kernel series.

Further confirmed that this is down to the i915.enable_psr parameter:

Linux 4.8 with no command line => flickering (enable_psr defaults to on)
Linux 4.8 with i915.enable_psr=0 => no flickering
Linux 4.10 with no command line => no flickering (enable_psr defaults to off)
Linux 4.10 with i915.enable_psr=1 => flickering

** Package changed: nvidia-graphics-drivers (Ubuntu) => linux (Ubuntu)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1586539] Re: Major screen flickering in Chromium and Google Chrome

2017-02-20 Thread Gakaza
Hello guys, does this only affect Unbuntu 16.04? I have seen my Ubuntu
14.04 Chromium having the same issue shown in the same video that Vasya
Pupkin (the user of the original post) posted.

I just happened to have my Chromium flickering whenever I'm watching
YouTube videos or sometimes even pdf (rarely), and I have intel HD
graphic as well with no additional graphic cards.

I tried to follow the above solution and edit the
/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf/20-intel.conf but the file doesn't exist. I
also tried to disabled the "Override software rendering list" option in
chrome://flags but it doesn't work either.

Sorry if I made this confusing, I'm a newbie to Ubuntu and hopefully
could find a solution for this problem.

System: Ubuntu 14.04.5 LTS
CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4770 CPU @ 3.40GHz
GPU: Intel Corporation Xeon E3-1200 v3/4th Gen Core Processor Integrated
Graphics Controller (rev 06)

Please consider this issue as closed. This looks to be an issue with the
