Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1668451] Re: update manager reports system of packages is broken

2017-02-28 Thread Sara
Many, many, many thanks!! It worked.

I do apologize for checking the security box: I thought it was a
security problem because I couldn't get the security updates installed,
even though I followed all the instructions given to fix it, repeatedly,
over the course of several days -- unfortunately the instructions didn't
mention I needed to add "sudo" at the beginning. Anyway, it worked.

I am a 65-year-old grandmother with no formal training at all in
computers although I've managed to figure out how to use them over the
last 17 years. but I love Ubuntu and really appreciate your very kind
assistance.

Best wishes to you

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1576844] Re: Touchpad/Trackpad freezes then eventually unfreezes (repeatedly)

2017-02-28 Thread Paul Mackinlay
These are the symptoms that I have. It happens since ubuntu 16.04 and it
affects 2 laptops that I own. Laptop 1 is an asus zenbook core i5 and
the other is lenovo B50-50 core i3. Both laptops are less than 1 year
old.

Anyhow when ubuntu starts sometimes (lets say 10% of the time) the
touchpad does not work. I login without using the mouse. Then I go into
sleep mode by pressing the power button and close the lid for a few
seconds. When I re-open it, the screen comes back to life with the logon
prompt and usually the touchpad is working again. Sometime I have to
repeat this procedure a couple of times before it starts working -
basically the way I see it this procedure forces the driver to re-
initialise.

Also, in order to run apt-get update, you will need to have
administrative privileges, usually gained through the sudo command, like
so:

  sudo apt-get update
  sudo apt-get upgrade

This should prompt you for your password, if your account is considered
to be an admin on this system.

2017-02-28 Thread Steve Beattie
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.
Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1659727] Re: Xorg freeze - blank screen - Enlightenment + nvidia driver

2017-02-28 Thread Paul Higgins
I was able to install E17 on another amd64 system with the nvidia driver
install. It has a similar failure. The screen was blank, but on this
system the mouse cursor was displayed, and the keyboard worked.

I finally stumbled across the setup instructions at:
   https://www.enlightenment.org/distros/ubuntu-start

Using that I upgraded to the latest enlightenment (E21) which seems to
have fixed the problem on my test machine. Wont be able to do that to
the system where it failed first until 3/3...

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1668722] [NEW] 60x11-common_xdg_path uses $DESKTOP_SESSION which needs a sanity check

2017-02-28 Thread Martin Nicholas
Public bug reported:

This file:
/etc/X11/Xsession.d/60x11-common_xdg_path
contains references to $DESKTOP_SESSION variable.

On one of my Ubuntu installs this variable contains: "plasma",
on the other it contains: "/usr/share/xsessions/plasma".

I don't know where either example comes from, but the upshot is that
paths are added to XDG_DATA_DIRS and XDG_CONFIG_DIRS that don't exist.
MANDATORY_PATH is also affected I believe, maybe others.

Surely a sanity check of the generated paths is in order. Seems
pointless to add non-existent ones.

$XDG_SESSION_DESKTOP looks like a replacement for $DESKTOP_SESSION, but
is that true?

Cheers!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1625846] Re: Xmir -rootless: Firefox menus pop up then close right away

2017-02-28 Thread Alan Griffiths
Incomplete for miral, we can't fix this in miral directly. The way focus
works in Mir does seem odd and I'm surprised that the workarounds
(ignoring focus loss) in the Qt and Gtk toolkits are "good enough". When
we have a plan, then will reassess how miral is affected.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1502738] Re: X apps are laggy under Xmir

2017-02-28 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I think this should mostly be fixed now in Mir 0.26 due to client-side vsync.
However as previously mentioned, more work is required specifically to make the
Xmir case optimal:
