[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1517046] Re: Unable to set 1920x1080 resolution in Ubuntu 16.04 as a VMWare Fusion guest

2017-03-14 Thread Allan Bogh
I'm sorry, I made a mistake and said it doesn't list the native
resolution. This was wrong. The displays application lists the native
1920x1080 but the display goes blank when this is selected. Using a
lower setting (1280x720) works. Adding a higher setting (2048x1152)
fails for obvious reasons.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1517046] Re: Unable to set 1920x1080 resolution in Ubuntu 16.04 as a VMWare Fusion guest

2017-03-14 Thread Allan Bogh
@yuval can fix the issue by creating a ~/.xprofile file with the xrandr
lines (change the lines to match your configuration):

xrandr --newmode "1920x1080" 173.00 1920 2048 2248 2576 1080 1083 1088 1120
-hsync +vsync
xrandr --addmode eDP-1 1920x1080

use "cvt 1920 1080 60" to get the --newmode line

I am getting similar results as OP with an HP 2711x using Ubuntu 17.04
beta. The monitor is detected but it doesn't list the native 1920 x 1080
@ 60Hz resolution. Adding the resolution with xrandr makes the external
monitor go black, but the displays application still shows it on and
connected.

Two other new Dell monitors won't detect at all, however one is using
USB-C->HDMI to HDMI->DP adapters which I think is causing issues. The
other is using Thinkpad's DisplayLink with the latest drivers.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1553328] Re: Mir/Unity8/USC crashes/freezes on nouveau (nv50) in pushbuf_kref() especially with multiple monitors, webbrowser-app or system settings

2017-03-14 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Even easier workaround for Mir/USC: Just default to clone mode instead
of side-by-side, which is the problem in today's duplicate bug 1672793.
Mir's legacy clone mode will at least ensure there is only one
compositor thread, so nouveau should be stable then.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1553328] Re: Mir/Unity8/USC crashes/freezes on nouveau (nv50) in pushbuf_kref() especially with multiple monitors, webbrowser-app or system settings

2017-03-14 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Per comment #17 it might actually be easiest to build a workaround in
Mir for now... Either disable secondary compositor threads, or build a
SingleThreadedCompositor to replace MultiThreadedCompositor.

In my spare time I'm working on an idea where post() could be made non-
blocking. So that would eliminate the need for Mir's compositor to be
threaded, and nouveau should then work (as well as it ever did for X).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1672033] Re: Xorg does not work in rootless mode on nvidia proprietary drivers (GNOME)

2017-03-14 Thread Tim
I don't currently have access to my nvidia hardware and to be honest not
even sure if rootless Xorg is supported yet on nvidia drivers, however I
would have assumed that if wayland is mostly working then the KMS
support would have been in good enough shape for this to work.

Without xserver-xorg-legacy gdm should start in wayland mode, so not
sure how that is related to rootless Xorg?

Igor, Can you get a back trace of the mutter crash? As far as I recall
most of the rootless Xorg stuff is at a lower level than mutter, and
handled by logind and Xorg. systemd-logind passes a fd for your drm
device over to Xorg, are there any log messages related to that?
