I'm having these exact symptoms on 17.10, all the time. I can only go a few minutes without triggering this bug. Thinkpad X1 Tablet, clean install of 17.10, happens in both X and Wayland sessions. The other bug is about specifically about dragging from the desktop to nautilus, and some people report it happening in X as well as in Wayland. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1716184] Re: failure of xrandr to find any outputs
This problem has been RESOLVED. After much hassle, machine was returned to Lenovo for service. They could not find any hardware test that indicated any failures, but after I raised a ruckus they replaced the "system board" and now the problem is gone. I am curious. I wish I knew what really failed... Oh well... I hope that this was a useful post.
