[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1752194] Re: Intel GPU tools crash with "Couldn't map MMIO region"

2018-04-04 Thread John Yang
but of course the intel-gpu-tool for trusty hasn't been updated since
2014 so likely it doesn't support i7-7700 (released in 2017) as you
described. However it's the same MIMO error message I am getting. I'm
hoping the same fix will be updated to the version for trusty.

2018-04-04 Thread John Yang
Yes I did run with sudo. The error message is different without sudo. I
think the new 14.04.5 fixed a lot of problems with the new intel cpu. At
least it fixed all my graphics card driver issue in one shot. However,
how do I find out what is supported with intel-gpu-tools?

In responding to change in direction of my finger, the finger has to
travel several millimetres (about half a centimetre) before the cursor
changes direction.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1757951] Re: FFE: wayland 1.15, move libwayland-egl to src:wayland

2018-04-04 Thread Timo Aaltonen
I have the packages in ppa:canonical-x/x-staging, but wayland should
bump it's breaks/replaces against the mesa packages to fix file
conflicts (because we didn't pull in this change yet). libwayland-dev
might also need to be split to have egl frontend/backend headers in
separate packages, I'll look into that first and push it to Debian, then
sync to ppa again.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1761261] [NEW] nouveau/nvidia drivers do not work with display in Bionic on Asus GL703VD Laptop

2018-04-04 Thread Luke Williams
Public bug reported:

Tried to install Bionic Desktop on my Asus GL703VD ROG Laptop with
NVIDIA GTX 1050M Video Card (with i915 Intel graphics card when not
using 3D) and the installer does not display. I have tried
nouveau.modeset=0 and nomodeset boot options to no avail. I was able to
finally install Bionic by hooking up the laptop to a projector, but
after a reboot, the laptop display still did not work and I had to set
the account to autologin otherwise I could not loging to the laptop. I
then install openssh-server so that I could ssh into the laptop and I
installed the nvidia-390 drivers from ppa:graphic-drivers/ppa which
installed, but still no local display.

In Artful, I could install with the nouveau.modeset=0 and then
installing the proprietary NVIDIA drivers and everything (except
touchpad, LP: 1738263) worked.

lspci shows the graphics card and NVIDIA card, and lsmod does show that
before NVIDIA drivers install, it is using nouveau, asus_wmi, and i915
for graphcis, and once NVIDIA drivers are install, lsmod only shows i915
and asus_wmi for graphics while nvidia is used for gpu and 3D, but still
no display on the laptop.

lsmod_prenvidia.txt shows the nouveau driver and the /proc/cmdline
lsmod_nvidia.txt shows nvidia drivers installed and the /proc/cmdline
lspci.txt shows the detected hardware
lshw.txt shows the hardware in the laptop.

Please let me know if you need any other information.

Thanks,
Luke

Gnome-shell will freeze at unexpected times when using the firefox

I've switched to chrome without having gnome-shell freeze on me.

Is there something particular about the way firefox 59 (Quantum)
interacts with my graphics hardware?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1756984] Re: Xorg crashed with signal 7 in dl_new_hash()

2018-04-04 Thread Alan Jenkins
I strongly suspect this is the same bug in upstream kernel v4.15, which
causes this issue:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-
server/+bug/1760450/comments/6

I am basing this on the "signal 7" (SIGBUS), as this is relatively rare
on x86 [1]. Also that it occurs inside xorg_backtrace() - this is also
*supposed* to be relatively rare, because libunwind tries to use a
clever trick to avoid reading wild pointers and dying with a
segmentation fault [2].

[1] https://stackoverflow.com/questions/2089167/debugging-sigbus-on-x86-linux
[2] https://lwn.net/Articles/502864/

I would also predict that the original fault was caused by fetching the
first instruction of the function, but it looks like we don't have the
symbol information for it. (boo, nvidia).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1760450] Re: Xorg crashed with signal 7 in _dl_fixup()

2018-04-04 Thread Alan Jenkins
Hi Ubuntu users! Signal 7 is SIGBUS. SIGBUS should be relatively
unusual on x86 [1].

[1] https://stackoverflow.com/questions/2089167/debugging-sigbus-
on-x86-linux

I'm excited to inform you that Fedora Linux users also started seeing
the same root problem. It is tied to the upgrade from kernel v4.14 to
v4.15.

Fedora bug report:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1553979

Arch Linux independently identified this as caused by the kernel upgrade:
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=235027

It can happen after resume from suspend, not every time but maybe once
every three days. We have reports for both Xwayland and Xorg getting a
fatal SIGBUS in _dl_fixup(). (While this is actually a secondary crash
in xorg_backtrace(), we have a load of SIGBUS traces that have the same
primary trace as each other).

Notice the specific faulting instruction in disassembly you captured: it
is not performing a memory access!

=> 0x559c102a4060 :  sub$0xd8,%rsp

Instead, notice that this is the first instruction in the function
ErrorFSigSafe. This is a big common factor in our traces. (We actually
have several different traces captured, with the failing function
varying, often along the same call chain).

What's happening is a fault on the instruction fetch. You should be
able to confirm this if you look at the address which generates the
fault. (si_addr field of struct siginfo. I don't know where the Ubuntu
crash collector saves this information)

The kernel failed to load in the page which holds the program code at
this point. That's the real problem: some sort of transient IO error
during wakeup. Users sometimes see other symptoms of these IO errors as
well:

PM: resume devices took 1.017 seconds
Restarting tasks ...
Read-error on swap-device (253:1:836184)
PM: suspend exit
systemd-coredump[755]: Process 1356 (Xwayland) of user 42 dumped core.

and

PM: suspend exit
EXT4-fs error (device dm-2): ext4_find_entry:1436: inode #5514052: comm
thunderbird: reading directory lblock 0

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1761121] [NEW] Latest intel ucode update halts my system during boot to graphic session

001: sig 0x000306a9, pf mask 0x12, 2018-02-07, rev 0x001f, size 13312
microcode update prevents me to boot to graphic session on any(4.13.0.38[37])
kernel.
I can successfully boot to the recovery console.
In some of failed attempts i got "NMI deadlock detected on CPU0,1,3 in mkswap"
I guess nvidia-384 has some issues and conflicts with updated microcode.
I have to disable microcode update with
IUCODE_TOOL_EXTRA_OPTIONS="--date-after=2018-02-07" to get my unity session
back.
