I will need to debug this more in detail. If we find it is Xorg giving
us the negative pointer coordinates then it should be fixed there. But
it might just be a mutter bug...

XPS 9575 isn't (currently) available for purchase with Ubuntu. So yes,
it's below the radar for something that is typically tested, tracked, or
fixed from a BIOS or validation team perspective.

Is there any hope that this will ever be fixed because as Bryn points
out at #36 the temporary "fix" of downgrading the BIOS is far from
satisfying.

** Description changed:

On a dell XPS 15 2-in-1 with the latest 1.4.0 bios, my touchpad and keyboard
are unresponsive at the gdm login screen. Keyboard works to unlock encrypted
harddrive before that though. If I plug in a USB keyboard or activate my
bluetooth mouse, I can use those to log in, and then after logging in the

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1849084] [NEW] Freeze on system-resume caused by kwin and amdgpu driver

2019-10-21 Thread Richard Baka
Public bug reported:

This is a well investigated bug by me.

Problem: a black screen freeze occurs by suspend-resume process
Ubuntu version: Kubuntu 19.10 default plasma, or the backported 5.17
Kernel version: default 5.3.10 or the mainline 5.4.0rc3
xserver-xorg-video-amdgpu: 19.* or the newest from git, the 18.0.1-1 works well

This freeze can be reproduced only if opengl 2.0 or 3.1 compositor is
enabled in Plasma settings. Xrender is OK however I don't like screen
tearing.

On Ubuntu 19.10 Gnome desktop (X based) this doesn't occur even if the
Gnome's compositor is enabled. (I don't know what is the default one
there but I haven't disabled it)

I think this is a Kwin / amdgpu driver related bug because of the
differentiation. These can be fixed even in Kwin/opengl compositor not
just in the amdgpu driver or in kernel.

One possible solution: disable opengl compositor by suspend and re-
enable it after login. Use fe.: Xrender before login / before the system
restored from suspend.

For Ubuntu's maintainers: Couldn't be this problem solved by a
downstream solution? Maybe a proper script could be enough by resume and
by suspend. There are a lot of bugs like this reported in freedesktop
bugreport and the developers haven't got enough time for fix them fast
enough.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1848965] Re: Video Playback very choppy

2019-10-21 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks.

The poor "choppy" graphics performance is expected because you are using
kernel parameter "nomodeset". That prevents all hardware acceleration
and smooth rendering from being used. The system is expected to use
LLVMpipe in that case and it is not a bug...

Please instead open a new bug about the "freezing" issue that
"nomodeset" is trying to avoid:

  1. Remove kernel parameter "nomodeset".
  2. Reboot and reproduce the "freezing".
  3. Report a new bug by running command:

 ubuntu-bug linux

Ideally, without "nomodeset" if you can. Otherwise with it.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1848965] Re: Video Playback very choppy

2019-10-21 Thread Bradley Wooldridge
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected ubuntu

** Description changed:

My laptop is HP Pavilion g7 (Intel® Core™ i5-2430M CPU with Radeon HD
6470M and Intel HD 3000 GPUs

Already have played with Ubuntu on older spec desktops with no issues at
all, however when when installing Ubuntu 18.04 from installation USB,
had to boot with nomodeset to overcome freezing as a result of Ubuntu
  18.04 not recognising/supporting these drivers

Tried to search for additional drivers but none found

Video handling resorts to llvmpipe (LLVM 9.0.0, 256 bits)

My problem is that Video Playback is VLC very choppy in full screen mode
  - seems to get a little better when minimised, but effectively not
  usable.

Have tried many threads posted regarding this problem, but nothing seems
  to work.

Would really like to migrate my workload onto Ubuntu 18.04 operating
system, but this seems to be a real non starter where i can't play video
content, as video editing is a core function in my workload.

Not sure if there is a solution for this, however after researching many
similar threads, coupled with your in depth response to similar problems
leaves me hopeful that you can point me in the right direction, or worst
case scenario tell me there is no solution at all, and that I will have
to stick to the hateful Windows 10 which is supported and working.

  1) not sure if it is just a simple graphics acceleration problem ?
  2) as flgrx no longer supported (for AMD Catalyst on Radeon HD 6470 M - can I
disable this GPU somewhere on boot - as this seems to be where boot goes into a
tizz. If so, how would I do this.
  3) if i did this would XORG then recognise other GPU - Intel HD 3000 and give
me correct rendering to eliminate choppy video

I am a noob, but have been playing with Ubuntu for some time, albeit at
very low level, not totally computer illiterate, but do feel I am out of
my depth in trying to resolve this. It just seems odd that it works fine
on much lower spec and older desktops, but that I cant get this to work
on my not so outdated laptop.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1846398] Re: Fractional scaling has significant visible refreshes on a 4k display

2019-10-21 Thread Daniel van Vugt
We're probably not going to rewrite the Xorg fractional scaling to work
around shortcomings in the Xorg feature we rely on. It maybe isn't even
possible. More likely we're just waiting on fixes to Xorg itself:

https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/xorg/xserver/merge_requests/24

Or similarly likely Wayland will become the default where fractional
scaling works better already.
