[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1896171] Re: Wayland GL apps appear corrupt on Raspberry Pi 4B (v3d driver)

2021-04-05 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Reopened (like the upstream bug) to avoid confusion about the fix not
being enabled by default. You just need to run:

  gsettings set org.gnome.mutter experimental-features "['kms-
modifiers']"

But we can close this again after that's been done automatically in a
future release.

The package being installed does not mean it is used. Xorg will use the
correct driver 'modesetting' by default.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1873895] Re: Regression: block staircase display with side-by-side monitors of different pixel widths

2021-04-05 Thread Sean Davis
** Description changed:

+ [Impact]
+
+ * This issue affects AMD graphics on Xfwm4 4.14.1.
+
+ * Windows are displayed staggered with a multi-window layout
+
+ [Test Plan]
+
+ * Use AMD graphics drivers
+
+ * Connect a second display at a different resolution
+
+ * Open multiple windows
+
+ * While the issue is present, the windows and desktop will appeared
+ staggered
+
+ * Once fixed, they display normally.
+
+ [Where problems could occur]
+
+ * Regression potential should be relatively low, as the release between
+ 4.14.1 and 4.14.5 are bug releases.
+
+ * With window managers, some changes could lead to different behavior
+ and other broken displays. Non-AMD graphics users should also test for
+ regressions.
+
+ [Other Info]
+
+ * Please see the Xfwm4 release notes for changes between 4.14.1 and 4.14.5:
https://gitlab.xfce.org/xfce/xfwm4/-/blob/xfce-4.14/NEWS#L7-44
+
+ [Original Report]
+
  Update based on further research.

This only happens when the secondary external display is operating at a
different pixel width to the internal. In this case eDP is 1920x1080
whereas the external HDMI-A-0 is natively 1680x1050.

It is caused by xfwm4's recent switch from using glx to xpresent for AMD
  GPUs.

The underlying bug is in the AMD driver.

I was able to reproduce on an external 1920x1200 display only when it
  was set to a non-native 1680x1050 resolution.

  ---
Two identical Lenovo E495 laptops with 20.04 installed. The problem occurred
initially on the laptop that is having package upgrades applied regularly.

With dual monitors and the external monitor placed left or right the
display has a blocked staircase effect shown in the attached photograph,
  and seems related to

  https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/xorg/driver/xf86-video-amdgpu/-/issues/10

More detailed investigation suggests it only happens when the X
coordinate of the two monitors is different. The symptom looks like an
off-by-one error because it appears as if the display is divided into,
say, 10 rows and 15 columns but the first row has 16 'columns' worth of
blocks on it and so wraps to the beginning of the 2nd row, and so on.

On the laptop without package upgrades being applied this didn't happen.
So I upgraded it (314 packages) and restarted and it too sees the same
  problem.

I suspected libxcomposite1 and downgraded it to 1:0.4.5-0ubuntu1 but
  that didn't solve it.

I now suspect libxcb but so far haven't been able to prove it.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1921552] Re: xscreensavers

2021-04-05 Thread Seth Arnold
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Reviewing your dmesg attachment to this bug report it
seems that there may be a problem with your hardware. I'd recommend
performing a back up and then investigating the situation. Measures you
might take include checking cable connections and using software tools
to investigate the health of your hardware. In the event that is is not
in fact an error with your hardware please set the bug's status back to
New. Thanks and good luck!

Public bug reported:

desktops and text gets on top of one another.

I am well aware this is development stage, so raising this issue and
making sure it is taken care of, to provide a far better experience for
testers and finally users is beyond important.

Doing some testing as part of me being thorough to confirm the FTBFS
doesn't happen with the updated nvidia-settings present (in PPA - want
to reproduce the FTBFS first before putting the new nvidia-settings into
that PPA for testing the FTBFS)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1887190] Re: MSFT Touchpad not working on Lenovo Legion-5 15ARH05

2021-04-05 Thread James Hennig
I don't know what I was comparing before, but I was wrong. The pinctrl-
amd.c drivers are different between the two kernels. Apologies. I wonder
if just dropping in the 5.9 pinctrl-amd.c driver (+possibly other
related needed ones?) into 5.10 (or later) would work?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1887190] Re: MSFT Touchpad not working on Lenovo Legion-5 15ARH05

2021-04-05 Thread James Hennig
Since this is the main thread on the Internet about this issue, I
suppose it is appropriate to post here even though I am using Manjaro.

- This issue is non-present on a Thinkpad 3 14ADA05 with touchpad
MSFT0001:00 06CB:CE2D on kernel 5.9.16-1 which uses i2c_hid. It is not
elantech or designware (doesn't load the associated specific i2c
drivers). Installing an entirely new keyboard panel with a new touchpad,
essentially rebuilding the entire laptop does not address this issue. It
is the same model touchpad for this specific laptop model even if you
order a new one (unless I got bad luck of the draw).

- The issue becomes present on kernel 5.10.23-1 (and previous versions
of 5.10) up to 5.12rc3. Have not tried compiling 5.12rc5, but no reason
to believe it would work.

The touchpad will fail to be recognized and work on bootup between 1-30
reboots. I have tried many things such as different kernels and
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT options, yes even checking to set the kernel
config option others are suggesting (Manjaro removed then reinstated the
CONFIG_I2C_HID_ACPI=m option). I also tore apart kernels 5.9 and 5.10 to
look at the pinctrl-amd.c driver and found that there was no difference
between the two on these kernels, so it is something other than what
https://launchpadlibrarian.net/500948605/0303-pinctrl-amd2.patch
addresses since it works on the former kernel but not the latter. Also,
the patch fails to apply on 5.12rc5.

I don't really know how to compare the entire torn-apart kernels 5.9 and
5.10 to try and find what change(s) could possibly cause this bug.
Hopefully someone else knows how to?

Might be able to get somewhere if so...

Other mods might be replacing the touchpad with a model not designed for
the laptop, but I don't know where to start with that either.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1920665] Re: Ubiquity KDE crash on try/install and from live session with "malloc(): unaligned tcache chunk detected"

2021-04-05 Thread Rik Mills
@Bob Your crash log confirms it is the same issue. It crashes the
installer at the try/install stage (what you are reporting, and what
results in the message you see) AND when the installer is manually
launched from a live session.

At the moment all anyone can do is wait for the result of the mesa
uploaders git bisect, to find the commit/cause in the new mesa that
landed in the release pocket @ around the 17th of March.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1920665] Re: Ubiquity KDE crash on try/install and from live session with "malloc(): unaligned tcache chunk detected"

2021-04-05 Thread Bob H
Unfortunately what Rik is experiencing on a "live session" in his
virtual machine with intel graphics using an unnecessary 'safe graphics'
mode is slightly different to my necessary use of 'safe graphics' to
unsuccessfully boot from a thumbdrive containing the iso.

I'm sorry I am not a bug hunter, I am not aware of the protocols.
All I can repeat is that a thumb drive containing either a current daily build
or the recent beta does not boot correctly.

I would guess in my untutored way that some change to the boot process
occurred during March. Up until then I had performed test installs
without a hitch.

I would be happy to give any assistance/info I can but my programming
experience is severely limited.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1920665] Re: Ubiquity KDE crash on try/install and from live session with "malloc(): unaligned tcache chunk detected"

2021-04-05 Thread Bob H
"malloc(): unaligned tcache chunk detected" does not appear on my PC.

I am trying to install from an iso of hippo on a thumb drive.

The boot fails before any 'live session' appears.

I am not trying to install from a live session, boot fails before that point.

I do not think this is the same as the bug reported here.

Rik it appears is attemptig to boot from a live session of some sort.

My installation breaks down before reaching this point.

The iso in the daily build was not failing until some time in March.

It has not been right since.

There were a number of updates on a regular basis in March.

The change is in the boot process rather than in actual installation as
the installation has not been begun at the point the bug occurs.

I'm no programmer but I can see that installation has not been offered,
let alone begun when things go astray.

Please review any conclusions so far.

  SourcePackage: ubiquity
UpgradeStatus: No upgrade log present (probably fresh install)

Since approximately 16/03/2021 ubiquity from maybe-ubiquity (try install
screen) and from the live session is crashing on launch or shortly
  after.

Cases where the crash can be triggered:

  - Using a Virtualbox VM, where graphics acceleration is handled by mesa with
LLVMPIPE
  - Start the ISO on real hardware in 'safe graphics mode'

Cases where the crash is not encountered:
  - Start the ISO on real intel (HD graphics) hardware with full acceleration.

NOTE: The crash can be avoided by downgrading MESA 21.0.x packages to
  the previous 20.3.4 in hirsute.

  Try/Install crash:

Screen fails to start, or starts then crashes on any user action. The
  user is presented with:

"Installation failed - The installer encountered an unrecoverable error.
A desktop session will now be run so that you may investigate the problem or
try installing again"

  Live session crash:

The installer does not start from the desktop icon. Starting ubiquity
from the terminal results in an "Aborted (core dumped)" message and
  nothing else.

+ The crash is most commonly "malloc(): unaligned tcache chunk detected",
+ but inevitably from this sort of memory issue can be something like
+ "realloc(): invalid next size"

  crashes were triggered is below.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1922533] Re: Problem with identifying the graphics card even after driver installation

2021-04-05 Thread Chris Guiver
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

Bug reporting is mostly about finding & fixing problems thus preventing
future users from hitting the same bug.

xserver-xorg-video-intel is an old 'intel' driver that is no longer
maintained being depreciated.

I suspect a Support site would be more appropriate, eg.
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu. You can also find help with your
problem in the support forum of your local Ubuntu community
http://loco.ubuntu.com/ or asking at https://askubuntu.com or
https://ubuntuforums.org, or for more support options please look at
https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/community-support/709
