[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1988484] [NEW] Holding down volume keys sometimes crashes xorg

2022-09-01 Thread Alan Pope  濾
Public bug reported:

Running KDE 5.24.4 on Ubuntu Jammy. On a few occasions, I've been able
to trigger a complete desktop crash by pressing and holding the volume
keys on my laptop.

Steps to reproduce:
1) Have something play audio - typically youtube in a browser
2) Hold down Fn+F3 or Fn+F2 to increase/decrease volume.

Crash.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1938195] [NEW] Configuration for eGPU removed on update

2021-07-27 Thread Alan Pope  濾
Public bug reported:

ThinkPad X1C9 running Kubuntu.
I'm using an external nVidia GPU in an enclosure, attached via thunderbolt.

I have applied updates over the last few weeks, and rebooted today.
Got a black screen. Turns out an update back in mid June (22nd) removed the
Option
"AllowExternalGpus" "true" from my xorg.conf.

Why is an update removing a vital configuration option enabling me to
display my login screen?

I had to re-edit the xorg.conf like an cave man from 20 years ago.

If I type my password into lightdm and wait long enough the characters
appear one by one over a period of about 10 minutes. But it's basically
unusable now. There were some CPU overheating/throttling events leading
up to this, but not a lot.

Now booted back to 3.18.0-13-generic and it still goes bonkers when I touch the

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1421575] [NEW] Desktop corruption when changing monitor config

2015-02-13 Thread Alan Pope
Public bug reported:

Thinkpad X220 running vivid up to date.

Usually sits in docking station with external monitor.

Today I ran the laptop outside the docking station, and plugged it into
the dock while running (which worked fine forever on utopic) but today
it now freaks out.

I deleted ~/.config/monitors.xml to reset my display config

I restarted and logged in with both monitors active.

As soon as I change the display config doing the display corrupts,
flickers and becomes unusable.

Using the display thing as guest works fine.
Creating a good ~/.config/monitors.xml as a guest and then copying that into

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1369113] Re: Steam game began crashing 2014-09-12 (cross-post Source bugtracker)

2014-09-17 Thread Alan Pope ʕ•͡ᴥ•ʔ
I'm getting this on my intel based X220 when running this game demo:-

http://www.imake-games.com/nubs-adventure/

To reproduce download
http://www.imake-games.com/nubs/earlyBuilds/NubsAdventureEarlyAccess.jar.zip
Unzip it then run it with

java -jar NubsAdventureEarlyAccess.jar

The game graphics are corrupted (as seen in the attached screenshot) and
I get the same _xgeWireToEvent: Unknown extension 148, this should
never happen. error in the terminal. Easily reproduced, doesn't happen
on nVidia based desktop

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1283568] Re: Desktop crashes when changing resolution

2014-03-13 Thread Alan Pope
Well. Here's a funny thing. I was going mad last night trying all kinds
of xorg options. On many occasions I'd get a black desktop after login -
unity was dying. If I did get unity started then changing resolution
would corrupt the display as reported in the bug. However I could login
and change resolution as any other user. Other clues like getting the
welcome to dropbox dialog on login led me to realise it was something
broken with my profile.

I then started systematically moving/removing config from ~/.config/ and
couldn't figure out what was breaking it. So I went on a bit of a
rampage and removed all of ~/.config/nautilus and ~/.config/dconf. This
fixed the problem. I can now login fine, and more importantly can
change resolution, all with no changes to my xorg.conf (which I'd
already reverted).

Sorry for wasting your time with this bug Chris!

Sorry I haven't tried the various options yet Chris. I generally don't
have an xorg.conf (2014 yay!) :)

Is there some skeleton xorg.conf I can use which won't introduce any

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1283568] [NEW] Desktop crashes when docking/undocking

2014-02-22 Thread Alan Pope
Public bug reported:

Thinkpad X220 with docking bay with external display attached to it.
I frequently dock and undock my laptop while it's on.

Since about thursday (I think) the desktop becomes completely unusable
when I dock or undock. The screen visibly corrupts, for example when
undocking (and going from 1x1080p external screen to 1x768 internal
panel) or docking. It flickers madly as if it's trying to crowbar
1920x1080 pixels into 1366x768 panel. Switching to VT and suspend/resume
doesn't fix it.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1277905] Re: Game windows (minecraft, titan attacks, maybe others) on Intel are transparent and no longer playable

2014-02-12 Thread Alan Pope
Well this is odd. It's happened again today.

I played Minecraft at ~18:45 and now it's ~22:30 and it's broken. No
reboot inbetween, however I logged out and back in inbetween at ~19:15.

I did some updates earlier (lunch time)..
http://paste.ubuntu.com/6922587/ which includes some xorg packages.
Related?

2014-02-10 Thread Alan Pope
That's possible.

Rebooted on Friday in US, flew home, slept.

alan@deep-thought:~$ last | grep reboot
reboot system boot 3.13.0-8-generic Mon Feb 10 00:58 - 10:26 (09:28)
reboot system boot 3.13.0-7-generic Fri Feb 7 13:45 - 10:26 (2+20:41)

Looks like I did some updates on Friday/Saturday. Nothing interesting
looking though.

http://paste.ubuntu.com/6908331/

Filed bug on Saturday afternoon after trying minecraft.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1277905] [NEW] Game windows (minecraft, titan attacks, maybe others) on Intel are transparent and no longer playable

2014-02-08 Thread Alan Pope
Public bug reported:

Fully up to date Trusty.
Open Minecraft, notice that the window is transparent - you can see through to
the desktop wallpaper, making the game unplayable.
Also tested with Titan Attacks which is also a lwjgl based game - dunno if
that's coincidence

This worked a few days ago. Probably before the most recent xorg update.

See screenshots.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1272338] Re: Xorg memory leak on trusty

2014-01-31 Thread Alan Pope
I tend to have two chromium sessions open, one for personal, one for
work. Typically they can have 20 tabs open each. They both have gmail
always open. Personal also has G+, tweetdeck, drive and few non-dynamic
pages. Most of my work pages are google docs or launchpad pages.

I may have spotify open.

Other than that I have a couple of terminals open and a few indicators.
Now and then I'll open minecraft, but not that often, and that doesn't
seem to correlate with this.

Nothing seems to aggravate it, but I do tend to have the same pages open
all the time, so it could well be some js heavy page like G+ or
tweetdeck?

Here's a process list in case I missed anything obvious.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1041790] Re: [snb] GPU lockup IPEHR: 0x0b160001 IPEHR: 0x0b140001, workaround i915.semaphores=0

2013-10-30 Thread Alan Pope
I have been running kernel 3.12.0-031200rc6-generic for a while now and
in 8 days uptime I haven't had any lockups that I recall. Previously on
older kernels on 13.10 I would get more than one lockup a day, sometimes
many a day.

2013-09-10 Thread Alan Pope
I filed the duplicate of this bug 161 as I get this frequently on
both my i7 laptop and i7 desktop.

I think I found a way to reproduce it easily on demand. Open chromium,
and visit google maps. Sign up for new maps. Visit somewhere on the
map and zoom all the way in then zoom in and out a bit. I have triggered
this bug a few times just by doing that. I'm not using dual screens or
anything funky. Just a basic Ubuntu 13.10 install with Unity.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1041790] Re: [snb] GPU lockup IPEHR: 0x0b160001 IPEHR: 0x0b140001, workaround i915.semaphores=0

2013-09-08 Thread Alan Pope
** Description changed:

X locks up periodically for a 2 to ten seconds at a time and this crash
log gets generated. It's significantly more than several times a day but
  not quite continuous.

Temporarily disabiling semaphores seems to eliminate the problem. E.g.:

  $ sudo -s
  # echo 0 /sys/modules/i915/parameters/semaphores

  [Workaround]
- 1. Edit your /etc/defaults/grub file.
+ 1. Edit your /etc/default/grub file.
  2. Change this line:

  GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash

  to

  GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash i915.semaphores=0

  3. Then run

  sudo update-grub

  4. And reboot

If you indeed have this bug, that should stop the lockups from happening.
If it doesn't, then file a new bug report.

Side Effects: Rendering throughput is dropped by 10% with SNA, or as
much as 3x with UXA. OpenGL performance is likely to be reduced by about
30%. More CPU time is spent waiting for the GPU with rc6 disabled, so
  increased power consumption.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1189850] Re: (Needs a 3.10.3 kernel) saucy/raring has frequent image corruption (intel, sna)

2013-08-13 Thread Alan Pope
I'm experiencing this bug (or something very similar) on my X220, and
with bug 1211754 seeming to trigger it about every 10-15 mins, it's
pretty annoying. I'm running 3.10.3-031003-generic from the kernel ppa
and xserver-xorg-video-intel version 2:2.21.12-1ubuntu1.

See photo attached.

Good spot! Thanks Chris. Strange given I had that parameter in there to
stop me getting GPU lockups. I hope whatever caused those is now fixed
then :)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1163209] Re: Xorg freeze

2013-04-02 Thread Alan Pope
I presume when it locks up to the point of un-usability, the only way
out is a reboot?

If so, when you boot back up, can you login from a console and grab the
~/.xsession-errors and attach it to this bug report. You can also
collect data about your system to make it easier to diagnose using the
following command:-

apport-collect 1163209

I'd also run this just to make sure nothing went missing during the
upgrade from 12.04 to 12.10 (note the caret):-

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop^

2013-03-05 Thread Alan Pope
@pgraner I have the same GPU lockup frequently, daily. I sometimes
forget to set the workaround i915.semaphores to 0, but when I do the
lockups go away. I have now set it in the /etc/default/grub as
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash i915.semaphores=0 and update-
grub...

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1111853] Re: Smooth (per-pixel) scrolling unavailable on X230 touchpad

2013-02-04 Thread Alan Pope
** Description changed:

- This is the same hardware as in #1042069, but is a different issue.
+ This is the same hardware as in bug 1042069, but is a different issue.

Two-finger and edge scrolling work correctly in both horizontal and
vertical directions. However, there doesn't appear to be any
smooth/pixel scrolling: scrolling actions still register as clicks of
the mouse wheel and there don't appear to be any smooth-scrolling axes.

It should be noted that I'm using the workaround in comment #5 in the
above bug (copied below), but smooth scrolling is not present without
the configuration either. It may just be a detection issue: I haven't
booted Windows on this laptop since I purchased it, but per-pixel
scrolling did work there, and it worked on my previous laptop with a
Synaptics touchpad. Please let me know if you need any extra
  information.

The workaround in comment #58 does eliminate the GPU lockups. Which I
notice when I boot in the morning and forget to do that workaround and
get a lockup part way through the day.

I'm seeing this on an X220 running up to date raring. Happens a few
times a day. .

alan@deep-thought:~$ grep SNA /var/log/Xorg.0.log
[12.175] (II) intel(0): SNA compiled: xserver-xorg-video-intel
2:2.20.19-0ubuntu1 (Timo Aaltonen tjaal...@ubuntu.com)

alan@deep-thought:~$ grep UXA /var/log/Xorg.0.log
alan@deep-thought:~$ grep AccelMethod /var/log/Xorg.0.log
alan@deep-thought:~$

Pretty sure I have the very latest BIOS from Lenovo as I recently
installed Windows on the machine to do exactly that.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1088806] [NEW] X crash on full screen game exit with unredirected windows on

2012-12-11 Thread Alan Pope
Public bug reported:

Running compiz from ppa:unity-team/sru with unredirected windows
switched on in ccsm

Start session (issue only seems to happen when system started from cold, can't
reproduce on second run after a crash).
Launch minecraft (not tried other full screen games), go full screen with F11
Play the game for a bit - usually 5 mins is enough, not tested with shorter
durations
Without leaving full screen, exit minecraft gracefully Quit Game
X crashes.

I did a quick backtrace. Let me know if there's anything else I can try.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1002958] [NEW] Moving external monitor around hard-locks x

2012-05-22 Thread Alan Pope
Public bug reported:

On a Lenovo Thinkpad X220:-

1. Attach external screen to the displayport connector via HDMI adapter
2. Boot the computer
3. Login
4. Observe all okay until running the display system settings applet and move
the external display above (behind) the laptop display.

X crashes to the point I have to use Alt+SysRq to reboot.

I can run with the displays side-by-side but not one above the other.
(my desk arrangement has the external display behind my laptop not side-
by-side). I can recover the situation by moving ~/.config/monitors.xml
out the way. I have attached my monitors.xml which may have some
configuration issue causing the crash in X.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 956208] Re: Screen corruption on AMD with Radeon driver

2012-03-16 Thread Alan Pope
It's real hardware, not a Virtual Machine. It's an HP Microserver N36L.
I went through this process to remove the old driver.

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/FglrxInteferesWithRadeonDriver

Dunno what I have missed though, maybe some library somewhere still
kicking about on my system?

The EDID tool just barfs on Windows 7 unfortunately. Will try the other

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 927155] Re: [snb-m-gt2+] Viewsonic VA2012w not correctly detected (Invalid EDID)

2012-03-06 Thread Alan Pope
Hi Bryce,

Thinking back over the history of this display. It was previously one of
a pair of identical screens each plugged into ports on an nVidia 7900 in
twinview. So I would have always had an xorg.conf to maintain the
twinview settings and 3360x1050 resolution. I have also just tested a
12.04 live CD with the screen attached to another nVidia based desktop
and I get the same problem, so it does look like a monitor-specific
thing rather than a video-card related issue, and may well not be a
regression after all.

I will try the other things you suggest though.

I bought it in September 2006. It has a DVI port but my laptop only has
VGA and some odd HDMI out (which I don't have an adapter for). I have
tried numerous VGA cables though.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 921450] Re: nVidia GPU lockup

2012-02-03 Thread Alan Pope
Thanks Bryce. I have since disposed of this laptop (to a family member,
running OSX instead of Ubuntu) and have replaced it with a non-nVidia
one. So unfortunately I won't be doing any further testing on this bug,
sorry.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 921450] [NEW] nVidia GPU lockup

2012-01-25 Thread Alan Pope
Public bug reported:

On a couple of occasions now whilst using firefox I've had the GPU lock
up on me.

[ 60580.875] [mi] EQ overflowing. Additional events will be discarded
until existing events are processed.

The laptop hasn't been suspended, but has been on for 17 hours and has
had the browser open all that time. This is the 2nd or 3rd time this has
happened in the last week. Pretty sure I'm always in Firefox. Tabs
include gmail, twitter, google calendar (x2), facebook, youtube, google
docs, Google+ and a few intranet pages. I recently watched an embedded
youtube flash video - a few minutes before the crash occured.

I'm using unity 3d, and also have thunderbird, a terminal, tomboy and
shutter open.

Had this again, triggered when someone gave me a link to a G+ page which
contains an embedded flash (youtube) video and some photos. I was able
to play the short video but the display became very laggy and eventually
unresponsive.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 854189] Re: nvidia binary driver gives black screen

2011-09-19 Thread Alan Pope
I did a clean install (i.e. wiping out the existing OSX and Windows
installs) and let the Ubuntu installer do the necessary to make it work.
It looks like (forgive my misunderstanding) it's installed in 'EFI mode'
rather than 'BIOS mode' which means even the nvidia driver can't make
the card work:-

Insert Ubuntu CD, reboot, hold down 'alt', choose Windows.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 768958] [NEW] Keyboard layout wrong on MBP 7, 1 Macintosh International

2011-04-22 Thread Alan Pope
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Hullo! Clean install of Natty on my MBP 7,1. During install I chose
Macintosh International as the keyboard layout because Macintosh
resulted in various keys being in the wrong place.

However, now I have an odd issue as a result.

If I want normal quotes I have to press SHIFT+' followed by SPACE. If I
do SHIFT+' then the next letter, it accents the next letter. á - like
that. If I do two sets of double quotes I get these:- ¨ when I want
these .

In System Settings it says 'United Kingdom Macintosh (International)' as
the keyboard layout.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 742380] Re: Error activating xkb configuration

2011-04-13 Thread Alan Pope
I moved xorg.conf out of the way and restarted gdm. I then logged in and
still got the error. I'll probably do a reinstall at some point. So will
report back if it still happens on a clean install.
