[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1966093] Re: Update to the 510.60.02 and the 390.147UDA NVIDIA driver series in Bionic, Focal, and Impish

2022-03-24 Thread Alberto Milone
** Description changed:

  [Impact]
  These releases provide both bug fixes and new features, and we would like to
  make sure all of our users have access to these improvements.

  See the changelog entry below for a full list of changes and bugs.

  [Test Case]
  The following development and SRU process was followed:
  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/NVidiaUpdates

  Certification test suite must pass on a range of hardware:
  https://git.launchpad.net/plainbox-provider-sru/tree/units/sru.pxu

  The QA team that executed the tests will be in charge of attaching the
  artifacts and console output of the appropriate run to the bug. nVidia
  maintainers team members will not mark ‘verification-done’ until this
  has happened.

  [Regression Potential]
  In order to mitigate the regression potential, the results of the
  aforementioned system level tests are attached to this bug.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1957094] Re: on-demand mode doesn't work with nvidia-390

2022-02-02 Thread Alberto Milone
I suppose I could simply detect the version in nvidia-settings. I
already have code that does that in a different patch that I wrote for
nvidia-settings.

** Description changed:

  [Impact]

   * In any Ubuntu series, if user using a old GPU (which supported by
  nvidia-390 only) then issuing glxinfo will get "Error: couldn't find RGB
  GLX visual or fbconfig". Which mean the Xorg doesn't load dri driver
  correctly.

  [Test Plan]

   * install nvidia-390 on nvidia-390 supported system.
   * prime-select on-demand
   * reboot
   * glxinfo
   * after applying this patch, it will fall back to "ON" mode after reboot.

-  * install nvidia-450 on nvidia-450 supported system.
-  * prime-select on-demand
-  *
+  * install nvidia-450 on nvidia-450 supported system.
+  * prime-select on-demand
+  * reboot the system
+ * prime-select query (and check that on-demand mode is still in use).

  [Where problems could occur]
   * Since nvidia-390 doesn't support on-demand mode (RTD3 either). If a user
stays in on-demand mode with 390 without problem, the after upgrading u-d-c and
reboot. The mode will fall back to "ON" mode.
   * From my point of view, it's fine because nvidia-390 doesn't support RTD3.
Thus, the nvidia will always stay in "Active" stage no matter which mode it is.
  * While there is no way to inform the user about this change, changing to the
only supported default will avoid breaking GLX.

  ---

  The regression from https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-
  drivers-common/+bug/1942789.

  It impacts Jammy and Impish so far.

  [Steps to reproduce]
  1. Find a GPU supports nvidia-390
  2. ubuntu-drivers install nvidia:390
  3. prime-select on-demand
  4. glxinfo

  [Expected result]
  Shows intel or nvidia drives monitor

  [Actual result]
  Error: couldn't find RGB GLX visual or fbconfig

  Since we are all agree "on-demand" mode as default mode.
  Pre-talk with Alberto, on-demand doesn't support with nvidia-390 (no matter
RTD3).
  We could consider to make it as performance mode and leave a note on
nvidia-settings.
  I'll prepare some test packages.

(other than forcing me to re-upload the exact same sources) for
something that can be amended in the bug description on Launchpad.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1935082] Re: [MIR] egl-wayland

2021-10-20 Thread Alberto Milone
> After installing libnvidia-egl-wayland1 and restarting the Wayland
compositor, how do you verify that this package is being used? Does this
work with any Wayland compositor in the archive or only specific ones?

The main scenario that we support is Gnome shell, with its default
compositor (Mutter), which comes by default with Ubuntu 21.10.

As for verifying that libnvidia-egl-wayland1 is in use, you probably
can't, at least directly. You will notice, though, if 3D applications
run unaccelerated.

> How do you enable KMS? How do you verify that KMS has been enabled?

If you install the driver using the ubuntu-drivers tool (or if you
install Ubuntu 21.10, and select the proprietary drivers) Wayland
support will be enabled by default, as long as your GPU is supported by
the NVIDIA 470 driver:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/NvidiaDriversInstallation

> Can you expand upon the 'not Wayland native 3D application'? Is the
idea to test the X11 compatibility layer? Or is this also not an X11
application? What application will you use for testing this, is this in
the archive already or is it packaged elsewhere?

3D acceleration on Wayland already works on native applications (using
the GTK3, GTK4, QT5 toolkits, etc). Applications which use their own
toolkit, such as Firefox, may also feature Wayland support. GTK2 apps,
apps that rely on Wine, and older QT apps can be assumed to run on X11
(XWayland) when Gnome Shell is running on Wayland.

To check that you are running a Wayland compositor:

$ echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE

You can also get a list of the apps which run on X11 on your system
using the following command:

$ xlsclients

> Can you expand upon the 'single GPU' bit? What happens on systems with eg two
> or more GPUs?

If your system has an integrated (AMD or Intel) GPU, and an NVIDIA
discrete GPU, the Gnome session will run off the integrated GPU, and you
will have to tell the shell to use the discrete GPU for selected
applications.

Thanks

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1935082] Re: [MIR] egl-wayland

2021-09-23 Thread Alberto Milone
No, unfortunately, the test can't be automated.

Here are some steps to test it.

1) Make sure that libnvidia-egl-wayland1

2) Run a Wayland session using the NVIDIA driver (KMS needs to be
enabled).

3) If it is a single GPU system, run a 3D application such as a game,
that is not Wayland native. If you are using a hybrid (Intel+NVIDIA, or
AMD + NVIDIA) system, you can launch the app by right-clicking on it and
by selecting "Run using Discrete GPU".

4) If the application runs without problems, then everything works.

  [Changelog]

  == 450-server ==

    * New upstream release (LP: #1925522).
  - Fixed an issue with the NSCQ library that caused clients such as
    DCGM to fail to load the library. Since the NSCQ library version
    needs to match the driver version, the user would encounter a
    version mismatch issue when using DCGM.
  - Fixed an ECC policy that caused a CUDA malloc failure after
    encountering a single uncorrectable error.

  == 460 ==

-   * debian/additional_card_ids:
- - Add new IDs:
-   1FB1 (Nvidia T600)
-   2231 (Nvidia RTX A5000)
-   24B7 (Nvidia RTX A4000 mobile)
-   24B8 (Nvidia RTX A3000 mobile)
-   25B8 (Nvidia RTX A2000 mobile)
+   * debian/additional_card_ids:
+ - Add new IDs:
+   1FB1 (Nvidia T600)
+   2231 (Nvidia RTX A5000)
+   24B7 (Nvidia RTX A4000 mobile)
+   24B8 (Nvidia RTX A3000 mobile)
+   25B8 (Nvidia RTX A2000 mobile)
    * debian/templates/control.in:
  - Make nvidia-dkms depend on its versioned nvidia-kernel-source
    (LP: #1925386).
  - Add transitional packages for the 450 series (LP: #1925522).

  == 465 ==

    * Initial release (LP: #1925522).

  == nvidia-settings ==

    * New upstream release (LP: #1925522). [all releases]
    * debian/patches/08_add_prime_support.patch: [all releases except for
impish and hirsute]
  - Stop the timeout after the child is done. This fixes an error
    that g_type_check_instance_is_a() was throwing.

  == fabric-manager-450 and fabric-manager-460 ==

    * Initial release (LP: #1925522).

  == libnvidia-nscq-450 and libnvidia-nscq-460 ==

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1915003] Re: SRU: Always update the initramfs when changing power profile

2021-02-25 Thread Alberto Milone
@Łukasz I verified LP: #1904583

Also, the reason why I moved self._disable_nvidia() down is that we want
the other stuff that ends up in the modprobe conf file (from
self._enable_runtimepm() and self._enable_kms()) to take place before we
update the initramfs, which we do in self._disable_nvidia().

So it's all correct.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1915003] Re: Always update the initramfs when changing power profile

2021-02-12 Thread Alberto Milone
** Description changed:

- The different power profiles require loading the nvidia drivers with
- different options (or blacklisting them, in case of intel mode).
+ Since we introduced support for dynamic power management, on systems
+ with hybrid graphics (LP: #1904583), the need to load drivers with
+ different options has become more evident.

- We need to call update-initramfs whenever we switch to a different
- profile, or things may fall out sync, resulting in a failure.
+ We need to make sure that the files in the initramfs are in sync with
+ the current user selection.

- The update-initramfs command takes a few seconds, therefore we also need
- to provide feedback, so that users know that they have to wait for the
- operation to complete. For this reason, prime-select will provide a
- spinner on the command line, and nvidia-settings will show a progress
- dialog.
+ This is also a chance to update the old nvidia-settings release in the
+ archive.
+
+
+ [Impact]
+
+ * If the modules list is not in sync with the selected power profile,
+ users may experience a black screen or increased power consumption.
+
+ * Updating the initramfs can take a few seconds, and we need to provide
+ users with some form of visual feedback.
+
+ [Fix]
+
+ * The prime-select tool shoud update the initramfs when switching
+ between power profiles, and provide visual feedback.
+
+ * The nvidia-settings panel should provide a progress dialog, since
+ profile switching would otherwise freeze the UI until update-initramfs
+ completes.
+
+ [Test Case]
+
+ Make sure a supported nvidia driver is installed (450, 460), then
+ install nvidia-prime and nvidia-settings from proposed, and check the
+ following:
+
+ 1) prime-select query (to check your current profile)
+
+ 2) sudo prime-select on-demand (or "intel", or "nvidia", depending on
+ your current power profile)
+
+ 3) Check that the operation completes successfully.
+
+ 4) Reboot your system
+
+ 5) Launch the nvidia-setting panel.
+
+ 6) Select a different profile from the PRIME tab, and check that a
+ progress dialog is correctly displayed.
+
+ 7) Close the nvidia-settings panel, and reboot.
+
+
+ [Regression Risk]
+ Medium, while the changes in prime-select are trivial, nvidia-settings needs
careful testing.

I think that change has a different scope, and needs further discussion.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1854485] [NEW] Introduce the new NVIDIA 440 series, and add 5.4 Linux compatibility to the 340 and 390 series

2019-11-29 Thread Alberto Milone
31 cases in
  Vulkan applications when video memory is full.
- Fixed a bug that could cause a blank screen on some DisplayPort monitors
  when logging in to GNOME, if the nvidia-drm kernel module parameter
  modeset=1 is specified.
- Fixed a bug that prevented NVIDIA GPUs from entering the low-power D3
  state when entering suspend-to-idle (s2idle). Note that on some systems
  this may expose an existing timing issue in the Linux kernel; see the
  "Known Issues and Workarounds" section of the "Configuring Power
  Management Support" chapter of the README for more details.

340.107-0ubuntu8
  * debian/templates/dkms_nvidia.conf.in,
debian/dkms_nvidia/patches/buildfix_kernel_5.4.patch:
- Add support for Linux 5.4 (LP: #1850824).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1850827] Re: nvidia-graphics-drivers-430 430.50-0ubuntu3 ADT test failure with linux 5.4.0-3.4

2019-11-07 Thread Alberto Milone

The 440 series replaces the 430 series, and it builds correctly with
Linux 5.4
