[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1947131] [NEW] HDMI display not recognized

2021-10-14 Thread Jarno Suni
Public bug reported:

$ xrandr | grep -i hdmi
HDMI-1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

This is even when the monitor is connected.

IIRC it has never worked with nouveau, but on the other hand nvidia-340
is unsupported nowadays by Nvidia.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1946987] [NEW] HDMI not recognized after upgrading from 18.04 to 20.04.3

2021-10-13 Thread Jarno Suni
Public bug reported:

I tried both nouveau and nvidia-340 deivers. It used to work at least by
the latter one in Xubuntu 18.04, even with HWE kernel

When using the nvidia-340 driver:
$ xrandr
xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default
Screen 0: minimum 1920 x 1200, current 1920 x 1200, maximum 1920 x 1200
default connected 1920x1200+0+0 0mm x 0mm
   1920x1200 77.00*

A device is connected in HDMI and xrand does not even list the
connector. When using nouveau, HDMI is listed but it shows as
disconnected.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1631715] Re: Password required twice returning from suspend

2020-01-29 Thread Jarno Suni
Stephen, do you use xfce4-screensaver? Is the other lock screen from
light-locker. You do not have to use both. Check your autostarts.
Purging light-locker changes power manager settings UI, but there is
still checkbox for locking.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 218637] Re: Non-breaking space is easy to write accidentally and impossible or hard to distinguish from regular space.

2019-08-22 Thread Jarno Suni
** Description changed:

OS: from Hardy to at least Bionic.

When you use Finnish keyboard, you have to hold Alt Gr down to type | or
\ or certain other characters. When typing a shell command, you may
often want to enter a space character after such characters. But it
easily happens that Alt Gr is still down when you press space, and
consequently you type non-breaking space character U+00A0 (at least, if
you use UTF-8 keyboard layout, which is default in Ubuntu).

  $cd /tmp ; echo 0 > foo\ bar ; ls "foo bar"
ls: cannot access foo bar: No such file or directory
  $cat foo bar | grep 0
No command ' grep' found, but there are 16 similar ones
   grep: command not found

Besides it may be hard to see the typing error, as non-breaking space
character looks exactly same as regular space character.

A way to avoid such typos would be to use another keyboard shortcut for
non-breaking space. Besides non-breaking space should look different
than regular space in terminal emulators and in editors.

  WORKAROUNDS:

  Run
  setxkbmap -option "nbsp:none"
to make type regular space character.

Even better option is to use "classic", "mac" or "nodeadkeys" keyboard
variant instead of "". This could be set up in /etc/default/keyboard and
maybe in configuration dialog in your desktop environment.

Non-breaking space can still be typed (in GTK apps) by u
00a0, if needed. Another option is to use compose key:
   .

In Bash scripts you could also use `printf '\u00a0'` or `printf
  '\xc2\xa0'` to print a non-breaking space. (You could use `echo -en`
instead of `printf`.) Or you could set up a variable `readonly
  nbsp=$'\u00a0'`.
+
+ Yet another workaround would be to use a font that displays regular
+ space and non-breaking space differently, but is there one?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 218637] Re: Non-breaking space is easy to write accidentally and impossible to distinguish from regular space.

2019-08-19 Thread Jarno Suni
** Description changed:

OS: from Hardy to at least Trusty.

  A workaround in to run
  setxkbmap -option "nbsp:none"
- to make type regular space character,
- and use `printf '\u00a0'` or `printf "\xc2\xa0"` to have a non-breaking space
in scripts and in command line.
+ to make type regular space character. To make this default
setting, you could add
+
+ XKBOPTIONS="nbsp:none"
+
+ in '/etc/default/keyboard'.
+
+ Then use `printf '\u00a0'` or `printf "\xc2\xa0"` to have a non-breaking
+ space in scripts and in command line.

Non-breaking space can be typed (in GTK apps) by u 00a0,
if needed, but it looks exactly like a regular space.
For me, would be a good shortcut for non-breaking space.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1812367] Re: xdotool does not work well if launched by a shortcut

2019-01-20 Thread Jarno Suni
** Description changed:

If I run 'xdotool click 3' as a keyboard shortcut (in Xfce at least) it
does not work as a right button click unless I add short delay by sleep
command in a script before running xdotool:

  sleep 0.2
  xdotool click 3

Supposedly it works even better, if I release the shortcut keybinding
  before the other command:

- xdotool keyup super+Space
+ xdotool keyup super+space
  xdotool click 3
- (if the key-binding is super+Space)
+ (if the key-binding is super+space)

These could even be combined in single xdotool command:

  xdotool sleep 0.2 click 3

  and

- xdotool keyup super+Space click 3
- (if the key-binding is super+Space)
+ xdotool keyup super+space click 3
+ (if the key-binding is super+space)

I think it would fix this, if the shortcut manager could handle the
  keyup part.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1812367] Re: Issuing right button click by xdotool does not work as expected

2019-01-20 Thread Jarno Suni
Issue with the --clearmodifiers seems to be fixed in v3.20160804.1
(https://github.com/jordansissel/xdotool/releases/tag/v3.20160804.1)

Devoting this bug report to the issue with launching xdotool by a
shortcut.

** Description changed:

- 'xdotool click 3' does not work. Actual left mouse button does not work
- afterwards. Using right mouse button before may help. This happens when
- I run the command as a keyboard shortcut in Xfce. If I use
- --clearmodifiers, it also happens when I use the command on terminal.
-
- Besides: if I use the command as a keyboard shortcut (in Xfce at least)
- it does not work as a right button click unless I add short delay by
- sleep command in a script before running xdotool.
+ If I run 'xdotool click 3' as a keyboard shortcut (in Xfce at least) it

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1737750] Re: nvidia-graphics-drivers fail to build [error: implicit declaration of function ‘init_timer’]

2019-01-12 Thread Jarno Suni
nvidia-340 from bionic-updates seems to work with linux
4.18.0-13-generic installed as a dependency of package linux-generic-
hwe-18.04. It didn't work with 4.15.0-43-generic last time I tried. Even
with the newer kernel there is Bug #1811402.

3Wouter Depuydt, would the same work for 340.107-0ubuntu0.18.04.1?
Doesn't apt report about broken dependencies later?

I used nvidia-bug-report.sh to report this bug to nvidia. (I had to
email to an address reported by the script.)

Release highlights for the 340 driver:
https://www.nvidia.com/Download/driverResults.aspx/135161/en-us
" The 340.xx legacy Unified Memory kernel module is incompatible with recent
Linux kernels, and the GPU hardware generations that the 340.xx legacy driver
series is intended to support do not support Unified Memory."

Bugs of nvidia-340 have been marked as duplicate of this bug. Should
they be separated?

2016-07-06 Thread Jarno Suni
BTW When using nouveau driver, there is also an issue with suspend to
RAM: after returning, visible mouse cursor does not follow mouse events,
but stays still. You can operate by mouse, though, but it is hard, since
the effective cursor is not shown where it should. Workaraund is same.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1409332] Re: Mouse cursor freezes, when using e.g. youtube in chromium, and stays that way

2016-06-23 Thread Jarno Suni
It is about the same xorg version in Trusty and later (1:7.7). I wonder,
if there is anything done to solve this bug? Would it help if I install
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/LTSEnablementStack in Trusty? xserver-
xorg-video-all-lts-xenial is not available, though (even if linux-
generic-lts-xenial is available for Trusty).

HDMI modes of NVIDIA GeForce 9400M do not work either by Nouveau in
?ubuntu 16.04. xrandr lists the modes though, but setting them just
corrupts the integrated display. By NVIDIA drivers HDMI works fine.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1589056] [NEW] HDMI does not work

2016-06-04 Thread Jarno Suni
Public bug reported:

xrandr displays "HDMI-1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis
y axis)" even if it is connected using a HDMI cable to a Samsung monitor
(model S27B350H) that has both HDMI and VGA connectors. Using Nvidia
driver the output works, though.

hyperboria, you need to use the script, if you use another locker than
light-locker. Is activating screensaver by "xset s activate" desired?

Actually, you don't need the ~/.Xresources customization in guest
session if you don't start xscreensaver in guest session.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1568604] Re: Mouse cursor lost when unlocking with Intel graphics

2016-04-29 Thread Jarno Suni
As for #43 still, if you use other locker than light-locker and switch
user using an Action button in xfce4-panel, you can switch back without
giving password (by pressing Ctrl-Alt-F7). So it is better to use a
script "xflock4 && dm-tool switch-to-greeter" for switching user, if you
do not use light-locker. Besides, xscreensaver does not let you unlock a
guest session, since it takes null password as cancel. Customize your
guest session to not lock on suspend, not to autostart xscreensaver, and
to have the ~/.Xresources customization for it, too.

BTW. you can not unlock guest session even if you use light-locker.

2016-04-29 Thread Jarno Suni
As for #43, you have to log out and log in before the "New Login" button
works in xscreensaver. You do not need to give password twice: first
time you can skip it by Ctrl-Alt-F7.

I added 9th test so it will set integrated screen on in the last step.
In Wily this seems to work ok, though I did not have VGA monitor
connected.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1541247] Re: Zooms image on TV horizontally so that the bottom part of framebuffer does not fit in display

2016-02-03 Thread Jarno Suni
** Description changed:

$ xrandr --verbose --fb 1067x600 --output TV1 --set mode PAL --mode 800x600
--rate 50.00 --scale-from 1067x600 --output LVDS1 --mode 640x480 --pos 0x0

  crtc 0: 800x600 50.00 +0+0 "TV1"
  crtc 1: 640x480 59.94 +0+0 "LVDS1

Expected result: the whole framebuffer fits on TV1.
Actual result: Image is zoomed vertically, and, low part of framebuffer is
cut. Horizontally ok.

However, sometimes this works fine, at least, if I set
--set 'top margin' 15 --set 'left margin' 40 --set 'bottom margin' 25 --set
'right margin' 40
- for output TV1. And then the following workaround does not work. Also the
image in TV may be sometimes offset so that there is black are on top and left.
All in all setting graphics works unreliably.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 995715] Re: X defaulting keyboard locale to US at login by a keyboard paired with Logitech Unifying Receiver

2016-02-01 Thread Jarno Suni
Oh, after editing /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf like told in comment #23, I
was unable to get login screen after boot in Xubuntu 15.10. At least I
got login screen after I removed the (otherwise nonexisting) file.

** Description changed:

- Note: A way to circumvent this bug - at least for the login screen when using
LightDM - is to add:
- display-setup-script=setxkbmap
- In /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf
-
-
- After upgrading Kubuntu Oneiric to Precise, X locale is defaulted to en_US
regardless of system-wide and user-specific options.
+ After upgrading Kubuntu Oneiric to Precise, X locale is defaulted to
+ en_US regardless of system-wide and user-specific options.

I found out about this issue when I tried to login via the KDM greeter
and it was not recognizing my password. I got pam authentication
failures in the auth.log, but authorizations files were just fine. In
fact, I could login from the console and within KDE itself. When I tried
typing into the KDM username box, I found out that special characters
were not corresponding to my it_IT layout. My password was including the
special character @ that was typed as ; thus not accepting my password.
I worked this around by changing password to not include any special
  character.

I installed LightDM and the problem persisted, so I thought about an
  evdev bug.

I posted this issue on the Kubuntu Forums at first, where you can find
  more information and logs [
  http://www.kubuntuforums.net/showthread.php?58623-Can-t-login-via-KDM-
  after-upgrading-to-Precise ].

Recently, German users were experiencing the same problem [
  http://forum.ubuntuusers.de/topic/kein-login-in-kdm-nach-upgrade/ ]
where I found out that the only thing in common is a wireless keyboard.

I bought a Logitech K800 (which uses a Unifying Receiver) when I was
running Oneiric, making this the first time I upgraded a distribution
while a wireless keyboard is connected. If that happens to be the
problem, it could mean that my keyboard locale was not recognized during
  the upgrade process.

I'm attaching some configuration files and logs, please tell me if you
  need more information.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 218637] Re: Non-breaking space is easy to write accidentally and impossible to distinguish from regular space.

2016-02-01 Thread Jarno Suni
geany has setting in Edit > Preferences > Editor > Display > Show white space.
I think it should be default. It shows one pixel mark for regular white space,
which is hard to see, though. It shows just space for non breaking space.
Inverting colors helps a bit.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 995715] Re: X defaulting keyboard locale to US at login by a keyboard paired with Logitech Unifying Receiver

2016-02-01 Thread Jarno Suni
** Description changed:

- After upgrading Kubuntu Oneiric to Precise, X locale is defaulted to
- en_US regardless of system-wide and user-specific options.
+ Note: A way to circumvent this bug - at least for the login screen when using
LightDM - is to add:
+ display-setup-script=setxkbmap
+ In /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf
+
+
+ After upgrading Kubuntu Oneiric to Precise, X locale is defaulted to en_US
regardless of system-wide and user-specific options.

I'm attaching some configuration files and logs, please tell me if you
  need more information.

wanted. E.g. you may want to use Finnish keyboard layout (for such

For me connecting the Unifying Receiver only after the greeter is
displayed does not work in LightDM (Mythbuntu 14.04) Besides, I suppose
having the Unifying Receiver connected while upgrading OS does not
affect the bug. The bug exist in (ubuntu) 14.04 with which I started to
use the Unifying Receiver.

In my experience, a keyboard using Logitech Unified Receiver (k400) uses
different locale than the other (USB) keyboard during the login at
LightDM, even if both are connected before and during booting. After
login they begin using the same locale. (Mythbuntu 14.04 here)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 275645] Re: xcalc has order-of-operations problems

2015-08-02 Thread Jarno Suni
I suppose the flaw does not exist in TI-30. Why would they want to mimic
an old scientific calculator, that can't do basic arithmetic right?
Besides, the manual page of xcalc tells (as for the TI-30 mode): 'It
should be noted that the operators obey the standard rules of
precedence. Thus, entering 3+4*5= results in 23, not 35.'
(HP-10C mode on the other hand does has completely different approach in
the order of operations, and xcalc emulates it only, if it is started
with -rpn option. )

The bug exists in Ubuntu 14.04, too.

2015-08-02 Thread Jarno Suni
I tried current Xubuntu daily ISO by running it from live USB media
without installing the system to hard disk. Then I installed chromium-
browser to the session. I couldn't reproduce the bug, but maybe system
works somewhat differently when running live session.

BTW using usb-creator-gtk* didn't work: resulting USB stick wouldn't
boot. I had to dd the ISO file to the USB stick to be able to use it.

*) version 0.2.23 according to usb-creator-gtk --version, but the
package version is 0.2.56.3ubuntu0.1.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1480574] [NEW] xcalc -rpn does not accept comma in numeric keypad as decimal mark

2015-08-01 Thread Jarno Suni
Public bug reported:

xcalc -rpn: comma on numeric keypad does not work as decimal mark; nothing is
displayed. It works, if xcalc is started without -rpn option, but it is
different kind of calculator then. (European keyboard has comma there in the
numeric keypad.)
Comma key on numeric keypad should work as decimal mark in xcalc -rpn, too.

Anyway, xcalc displays comma as desimal mark, when dot is chosen in the
GUI, or when dot is pressed in keyboard (at least in my system, Finnish
locale LC_NUMERIC=fi_FI.UTF-8). IMO comma should work as well.

PS. xcalc has other oddities: if Num lock is on, digit keys are not
effective elsewhere, but in numeric keypad, which works even if Num lock
is off.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 275645] Re: xcalc has order-of-operations problems

2015-08-01 Thread Jarno Suni
If it were by design, what would be the calculation order rule?
It calculates 2*2^2+2 so that + has higher precedence than *.
On the other hand, it calculates 2*2²+2, 2+2*2^2 and 2*2+2 so that * has higher
precedence than +.
This is a bug.

** Description changed:

I can not make this happen, if I use Firefox, but it happens, if I use
Chromium browser and play youtube video. Visible mouse cursor stops
moving. Still I can move mouse and use it, but it is hard, when you
don't see where the cursor effectively is. This seems to happen only, if
I have hardware acceleration enabled in advanced settings.
