[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 717114] Re: [i945gm] Screen Corruption with new Xorg stack

2011-02-17 Thread Kees Cook
I see this too. It does not always happen, but when it does, that
terminal will remain affected. Doing a visual bell (terminal flash) will
clean up the corruption, but then I can trigger it again by having
something write a lot to the terminal, and the scrolling will get
corrupted. If I close that terminal and open a new one, it generally
stays gone. Not sure what initially triggers it.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 625156] Re: Bug touchpad ALPS sur HP DM1-1110ef

2010-08-28 Thread Kees Cook
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a regular (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.
Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 565981] Re: [KMS] gem objects not deallocated

2010-04-21 Thread Kees Cook
** Description changed:

  [Problem]
Memory leak. Fix to glx 1.4 backport did not deallocate gem objects properly.

  [Background]
- Red Hat backported glx 1.3 and 1.4 support from xserver 1.8. These patches
were taken by Debian as patches 03_fedora_glx_versioning.diff and
04_fedora_glx14-swrast.diff. Other distros using xserver 1.7 have likewise
adopted these backports.
+ Red Hat backported glx 1.3 and 1.4 support from xserver 1.8. These patches
were taken by Debian as patches 03_fedora_glx_versioning.diff and
04_fedora_glx14-swrast.diff, and so Ubuntu took them in order to remain in sync
with Debian. Other distros using xserver 1.7 have likewise adopted these
backports.

Subsequent testing by Ubuntu identified an xserver crash that occurs
with these patches enabled when closing Clutter apps. A partial fix was
implemented in Ubuntu based on upstream work, and the issue believed
solved, but further testing has shown that a slow memory leak is
present, causing issues such as described below, which can result in
system instability after a day or two of uptime (depending on memory
- quantity and usage).
+ quantity and usage). Distros that don't include support for Clutter
+ obviously won't see the bugs.

Following these findings, Debian has dropped the glx patches. Ubuntu is
evaluating fixing the patches vs. following Debian's approach, being
mindful of any userspace apps that may have come to depend on glx
  1.3/1.4 functionality.

  [Original Report]
There has been some buzz the last days about excessive swapping and OOM
conditions. It can seem like the kernel memory use is increasing since the user
processes seem not to grow unusually.

/sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/gem_objects shows that the GEM object bytes
number is increasing. One way to reproduce, is this:

- $ for t in `seq 1 10`; do eog /usr/share/backgrounds ; echo `grep object
bytes /sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/gem_objects` `ps ocomm,vsz,rss $(pidof X)|grep
X`; done
+ $ for t in `seq 1 10`; do eog /usr/share/backgrounds ; echo `grep object
bytes /sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/gem_objects` `ps --noheaders ocomm,vsz,rss
($pidof X)`; done
  142376960 object bytes Xorg 25812 15372
  145907712 object bytes Xorg 25812 15372
  150458368 object bytes Xorg 25812 15372
  154816512 object bytes Xorg 25812 15372
  159244288 object bytes Xorg 25812 15372
  163721216 object bytes Xorg 25812 15372
  168148992 object bytes Xorg 25812 15372
  172699648 object bytes Xorg 25812 15372
  177152000 object bytes Xorg 25812 15372
  181530624 object bytes Xorg 25812 15372

It shows that the Xorg process is not growing, but gem objects are. Similarly
counting and summing objects show there are gem objects adding up (with
refcount 2) but not disappearing again when the application closes:
   awk '/name/{ i++; s+= $4 } END{print i   s}'
/sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/gem_names

These issues have been seen on intel and ati, with the lucid kernel as
well as the mainline 2.6.34 snapshot.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 563457] Re: xinput crashes on wacom properties list

2010-04-14 Thread Kees Cook
Something is returning a very invalid Atom number to the end of
XIGetProperty list for the Wacom Button Actions (282). This patch adds
some defensiveness to xinput to at least not crash, but is not the
source of the real problem.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 563457] Re: xinput crashes on wacom properties list

2010-04-14 Thread Kees Cook
Ah-ha, got it. Atoms are packed as 32bit values, and on 64bit systems,
this will mean the last atom in the list copies 4 bytes out of xinput's
heap after the end of the data buffer. This patch is a real fix and
corrects the dereferenced size so that the resulting atom is zero-
extended instead of filling the high half with garbage.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 542357] Re: upgrade from karmic to lucid: gui is crashing on login

2010-04-04 Thread Kees Cook
Can you attach the contents of your /proc/cpuinfo file? It seems like
glibc is choosing the wrong library for accelerated memcpy maybe?

BTW, instead of building your own glibc, consider using the existing
debug symbols for the regular eglibc build in Ubuntu. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProgramCrash for details.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu

to be a regular (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 481591] Re: xvfb-run totally broken

2009-11-14 Thread Kees Cook

** Description changed:

xvfb-run fails to launch any more on karmic. Reverting the patch from
2:1.6.4-2ubuntu3 fixes the problem. This breaks any tool that uses
xvfb-run during its build (like openjdk-6).
+
+ impact: tools needing xvfb-run will fail (e.g. openjdk-6 does not perform any
testsuite runs)
+ addressed: refactored to correctly wait for xvfb execution.
+ patch: see attached
+ discussion: regression potential is low, since xvfb-run doesn't actually
function in karmic.
+ TEST CASE: the follow command should report 0:
+ xvfb-run -a -e /dev/null -s -extension GLX true; echo $?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 451697] Re: Xorg pegs CPU, desktop performance suffers after Karmic upgrade

2009-10-14 Thread Kees Cook
To clarify, this is not bug 439138 since the CPU would idle when not
doing anything (and cryptsetup is not installed).

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

I'd been using Karmic for the last couple of weeks and did an upgrade to
get latest last night. After a reboot I logged in and overall
performance was really lousy. Scrolling from within a window, dragging
a window around, typing within a window were glacially slow. Any time I
did any of the above things Xorg pegged the CPU. I tried rebooting
again, that didn't work. I also tried rebooting and using an older
  kernel, that also didn't work.

What managed to get everything back to normal was reverting from
  xserver-xorg-video-intel_2%3a2.9.0-1ubuntu2_i386.deb to xserver-xorg-
  video-intel_2%3a2.8.1-1ubuntu2_i386.deb. After another reboot
performance was as it was before the update. All other packages remain
  as they are.

- This is (apparently) not related to the cryptsetup version, I have the
- most recent (fixed) version:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 195767] Re: Xorg crashed with SIGSEGV in free()

2009-09-16 Thread Kees Cook
** Description changed:

I am using the nvidia-glx drivers
under a ubuntu hardy heron alpha 5 release
for my Nvidia graphics card (nVidia Corporation G72M [Quadro NVS 110M/GeForce
Go 7300])
in a dell lattitude d620 laptop
with the driver nv set in the /etc/X11/Xorg.conf file for the device
module. this works, but of couse without any desktop efffects.

Changing this driver option (as switching from the nvidia-glx driver to
the nvidia-glx-new driver) from nv to nvidia to get the 3d desktop
effects, the login window appears correctly, bu after login, the opening
of a GDM session fails where the Xserver crashes and restarts after a
  while.

while everything worked well under ubuntu gutsy gibbon with the driver
option nvidia and the 3d desktop effects, I get the reported error
when using it for hardy heron alpha 5.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 428715] Re: too slow graphic performance

2009-09-13 Thread Kees Cook
Thank you for using Ubuntu and taking the time to report a bug. Your
report should contain, at a minimum, the following information so we can
better find the source of the bug and work to resolve it.

Submitting the bug about the proper source package is essential. For
help see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage . Additionally,
in the report please include:

1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'cat /etc/lsb-release' or System -
About Ubuntu.
2) The version of the package you are using, via 'dpkg -l PKGNAME | cat' or by
checking in Synaptic.
3) What happened and what you expected to happen.

The Ubuntu community has also created debugging procedures for a wide
variety of packages at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures .
Following the debugging instructions for the affected package will make
your bug report much more complete. Thanks!

These binaries should either be built correctly, or have their stack
markings forced to be disabled, using execstack -c $target during the
build process (though this would require a trivial MIR for the prelink
source package to get execstack for the build).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 404710] Re: Screen crashed and inmediately log out

2009-08-02 Thread Kees Cook
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a regular (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.
Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

** Visibility changed to: Public
