@dinamic I think you're seeing a different problem with similar
symptoms, probably related to libSDL2 probing order.

I get the same behaviour from gedit. It seems any application relying
on gnome-session running is going to hang. I would point at some Gnome
library as being the casue of this.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1675364] Re: [Regression] xmir applications fail to render

2017-03-23 Thread Stephen M. Webb
It seems the difference between my two test machines is that one one I
had logged in to Unity 7 previously, and that left gnome-session-binary
running. After a reboot to kill all systemd --user units, konsole now
hangs on both test machines.

It looks like this problem is in konsole, which requires gnome-session
to be running in order to function normally.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1671731] Re: [xmir] closing an app while a child window is opened leaves an Xmir process opened eating 100% CPU

2017-03-20 Thread Stephen M. Webb
This is simple to reproduce. The application has disappeared from the
screen but continues to run.

It looks like qtmir is closing the window (as requested) but no word
gets out to the actual process (ie. there is no session management).
I'm suspecting the Unity 8 lifecycle for desktops is not in place yet.

Here's a snippet from $HOME/.cahe/upstart/unity8.log.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1668429] Re: X apps fail to launch with failure to open display (no Xmir running or no access to it)

2017-02-27 Thread Stephen M. Webb
The log shows Firefox is being run natively under Unity 8 (no Xmir).
Firefox is known to not be built natively for Mir, so it's not a
surprise that it it not start.

Assuming that an Xmir instance should be launched just in case for any
and all applications run under Unity 8 was purposefully disabled to
prevent unwanted empty black windows from covering the screen.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1613708] Re: [regression] Xmir: Some buttons are unclickable after rotating the screen

2016-09-14 Thread Stephen M. Webb
Updated debdiff after adding new changelog and backporting to Mir 0.21.

** Attachment removed: "debdiff for Xenial SRU"

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/1613708/+attachment/4739347/+files/debdiff

** Attachment added: "debdiff for Xenial SRU"

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/1613708/+attachment/4740857/+files/debdiff

** Description changed:

  [Impact]

XMir clients do not have their input transform matrix modified properly
when the screen dimensions and orientation change (ie. rotation).

This shows up primarily on Bq M10 tablets which rotate on startup.

  [Test Case]

Install XMir on a device that supports screen rotation. Connect a
client (using Libertine is the easiest way to do this). Attempt to use
direct or indirect pointer input on the right side of the screen. The
  bug is it does nothing.

  [Regression Potential]

This change affects only the XMir server. There is potential that XMir
functionality is compromized but mainline x.org functionality is
  unaffected.

This XMir patch update is pulled directly from Ubuntu current
development release "Yakkety Yak" where it has been in production for
more than 6 weeks without apparent regressions.

  [Other Info]

The patch update also includes bugfixes for bug #1617925, bug #1617932,
  and bug #1591356.
+
+ This patch differs from the patch in Ubuntu "Yakkety Yak" to compile
+ with Mir 0.21. The only functional difference is an extra message
+ logged when run against Mir 0.24.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1564920] [NEW] x.org server fails to start when $TMPDIR is set

2016-04-01 Thread Stephen M. Webb
Public bug reported:

When the Xmir server is run on a device or desktop under Unity 8 it
fails to start with the following error messages.

  [xkb] Can't rename /run/user/32011/confined/com.ubuntu.sdk/fileSgDXpU to
/tmp/server-B20D7FC79C7F597315E3E501AEF10E0D866E8E92.xkm, error: Invalid
cross-device link
  XKB: Failed to compile keymap
Keyboard initialization failed. This could be a missing or incorrect setup of
xkeyboard-config.
  (EE) Fatal server error:
(EE) Failed to activate core devices.(EE)

We traced the problem down to the fact that the $TMPDIR is set in the
environment and points to a confined location in the /run filesystem,
and x.org uses the hardcoded path of /tmp which is a different
filesystem. A Ubuntu-specific patch to the x.org server attempts to
rename the .xkm file across filesystems (which is not allowed).

To avoid this error the Ubuntu-speicific patch to cache the xkb file
should also patch the hardcoded /tmp to use $TMPDUR if it is set.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1357746] Re: Compiz fails to load with xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.99.914-1~exp1ubuntu1 on some Intel hardware

2014-08-27 Thread Stephen M. Webb
The logs attached to this bug indicates an error originating in the
Nouveau video driver on startup, which has nothing to do with Compiz
(other than the video driver does not then offer required functionality
for Compiz to run) or the Intel video driver.

[ 8.553] (EE) NOUVEAU(G0): Failed to initialise context object:
2D_NVC0 (0)

If the problem occurs only with certain versions of the Linux kernel,
it's likely the problem is either in the Linux kernel or in the Nouveau
video driver and not Compiz.

The original description of this problem indicates an error originating
with the Intel video driver, which has nothing to do with Compiz (other
than the video driver does not then offer required functionality for
Compiz to run). If the problem occurs after upgrading the video driver
or kernel or only with certain versions of the kernel but not Compiz,
it's likely that the video driver or kernel is the cause of the problem
and not Compiz.

It is not clear from the logs and the description of this report it two
separate and unrelated video driver problems or kernel problems are
being combined into one bug report. It's fairly clear it's not a
problem that can be solved by the Compiz package.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1307701] Re: xserver mouse pointer emulation from touch breaks with QML app.

2014-05-06 Thread Stephen M. Webb
The code in Qt that subscribes to slave device events is the explicit
tablet-handling code. Checking the code, the touchscreen on my Dell XT2
is being treated as a tablet by the Qt code because it supports a stylus
mode on one of its alternate devices.

It sounds like the bug is in the Qt XCB QPA code, which explains why it
only started occuring in QML apps after the switch to Qt 5.2.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1260068] Re: Unity continuous-integration fails in armhf due possibly to a libegl issue

2013-12-18 Thread Stephen M. Webb
To build Unity and run the tests in an up-to-date Trusty build
environment you need to use the GTK fix branch (API changes in GTK
prevent Unity from building using trunk).

# apt-get build-dep unity
# bzr branch lp:~townsend/unity/fix-gtk-build-error/
# cd fix-gtk-build-error
# dpkg-buildpackage

The unit tests are run as a part of the packaging build.

The file tests/dummy-xorg-test-runner.sh is a shell script use to invoke
a headless X.org server against which the tests get run. I believe this
is where the problem lies. It looks like the headless X.org server does
not start properly on armhf targets with the new Mesa. It may be
possible to avoid building Unity to reproduce this problem if it occurs
just running that script.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1222602] Re: [regression] [gen3] Mesa 9.2 makes Unity unusable on Atom class hardware and 943/945 graphics controllers

2013-10-05 Thread Stephen M. Webb
The downgrade to 1.4 workaround causes a different code path in Unity
to be executed, and that uses a much simpler blur function. It looks
OK, but to the expert eye it doesn't look near as good. Don't ask me
what the difference is: it all looks blurry to me even with my bifocals
on.

The root of the problem is that the newer Mesa claims it supports OpenGL
2.1 functions, but it's doing that by emulating GPU functions on the CPU
in software. So it's technically correct, but practically unusable.

2013-08-21 Thread Stephen M. Webb
This is a pretty pathological condition acknowledged as a problem in the
video drivers, and can be reproduced with applications other than Unity
(see comments above). As such, I can't justify this as a bug in Unity.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 678137] [NEW] Xorg freezes, mouse pointer still moves

2010-11-21 Thread Stephen M. Webb
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

This is on a Lenovo T410 with the nouveau driver installed and an
external monitor connected, running 10.10.

Running kernel 2.6.37 on recommendation of a kernel developer in an
attempt to solve this problem. Same problem obtains with stock 10.10
kernel.

Main symptom: X display is frozen, no display updates, no keyboard
response, no clicky from mouse. Mouse cursor still moves, though.
Problem happens frequently and generally requires a system reboot to
recover.

Finally caught this while ssh'd in. Xorg cores with the following.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 583760] Re: Mouse cursor dissappears with nouveau

2010-11-09 Thread Stephen M. Webb
I get this problem on a regular basis. Several times a day. It
requires a full reboot to reset.

I am running 10.10 on a Thinkpad T410 with an external monitor. The
mouse cursor disappears from the built-in display on the laptop but
continues to appear on the external monitor. The mouse does, in fact,
work on the built-in display but is invisible.

there is nothing abnormal in the Xorg.0.oog, but dmesg always has the
following.

[ 8319.721137] [drm] nouveau :01:00.0: EvoCh 0 Mthd 0x Data 0x0400
