[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1510970] Re: Intel driver crashes on Ubuntu 15.10

2016-08-21 Thread muhkuh
I have a laptop with an old Intel 945G Chipset. When upgrading from
14.04 to 16.04 Xorg already crashed on Startup before I was successfully
logged in (have auto-login enabled). Applying the Workaround from #40
worked. I get into the Desktop session and everything seems stable.

I have also rolled back to SNA and haven't yet had a crash so 16.04
seems to have solved the issue. I will probably have a crash now as
soon as I post this comment.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1510970] Re: Intel driver crashes on Ubuntu 15.10

2016-07-02 Thread Johan Tol
The same for me. Today I rolled back the "uxa"-workaround by deleting
the 20-intel.conf file from /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d (I didn't have one
before the workaround). After a couple of hours I still haven't had a
single crash. I guess 16.04 solved the problem.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1510970] Re: Intel driver crashes on Ubuntu 15.10

2016-05-02 Thread Netibqa
I had the same bug with 15.10. I used xubuntu, with awesome instead of
xfce. None of the solutions here worked.

When I had an external screen connected, the other screen would not
crash, and by going to arandr, unchecking then re-checking my main
screen would bring it back. When the screen is black, there are signs
that everything still behaves as if there was a working screen.

I reverted to 14.04 and all was fine, and now I upgraded to 16.04, and
am using xubuntu with xfce. The bug is back, and pretty frequent, but I
don't seem to see how to reproduce it (sometimes I'm just reading
something and it crashes). I disabled SNA again, maybe this time it will
work ?

I don't get how this is not a more urgent bug.

I created the file:
sudo touch /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf

sudo nano /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf
Then pasted the following content:

Section "Device"
 Identifier "Card0"
 Driver "Intel"
 Option "AccelMethod" "uxa"
EndSection

which resolved the random crash errors.

cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep -i sna

to check if SNA is enabled and working

Some time before that I disabled window animations but that only diminished the
number of crashes.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1510970] Re: Intel driver crashes on Ubuntu 15.10

2016-01-03 Thread Dieter
Same problems for weeks. Opening video files (vlan). Using Firefox. Opening or
closing folders via SMB to an external NAS.
And other activities which i do not remember, sorry.
First i would get the login screen again after 10-120 seconds. Then the crash
report would tell me that it was xorg.

It might not be the same bug then please ignore my ranting.

But the last few days (since around xmas) the system would not do that anymore
but simply freeze. Only hard reset helps even after waiting 15 minutes. I
always install updates immediately.
Using Lenovo X220 with 15.10.
Will now try disabling SNA and see how it goes.

Bad bug! Was in the middle of important work that actually pays my
bills.

2016-01-03 Thread KaySL
After a few days of this, added the xorg-edgers PPA, upgraded to the
newer packages, and I haven't had a single X server crash since. I also
installed the 4.4.0-040400rc4-generic kernel available here:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.4-rc4-wily/ but I'm not
sure if that's required in addition to Edgers.

Disappointing that this bug remains unfixed.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1510970] Re: Intel driver crashes on Ubuntu 15.10

2015-12-28 Thread Felix
The "uxa" #52 workaround helped me with starting games from steam again.

Maybe this helps with reproducing the bug: Constant crashes ocurred
while starting the game "screencheat" on Ubuntu 15.10, amd64.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1510970] Re: Intel driver crashes on Ubuntu 15.10

2015-12-10 Thread Timo Aaltonen
Axel: note that 2015Q3 intel stack actually reverts to the old -intel
release (2.99.917) which has it's own set of bugs.

Someone willing to bisect between the wily -intel driver and xenial
version would be nice.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1510970] Re: Intel driver crashes on Ubuntu 15.10

2015-12-04 Thread Mark Nitters
On my system /usr/share/X11/xorg:conf:d/20-intel.conf did not exist.
Creating it with the following content solved the crashes:

me@host:/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d# cat 20-intel.conf
Section "Device"
 Identifier "Card0"
 Driver "Intel"
 Option "AccelMethod" "uxa"

Crashes were consistently reproducible when de-maximizing libreoffice

2015-12-04 Thread Axel G. Rossberg
Had the same problem, in particular reproducible crashes when de-
maximizing libreoffice writer. Disabling SNA as suggested by Mark
Nitters above fixed it, but also instead installation of intel's latest
drivers from here https://01.org/linuxgraphics/downloads/intel-graphics-
installer-linux-1.2.1 This will then use SNA graphics acceleration.

2015-12-04 Thread Johan Tol
Thank you Axel for pointing to the intel drivers. I installed the latest
drivers and enabled SNA again. It looks as if it takes longer to crash
now, but eventually it does. Prior to the update it was easy for me the
reproduce a crash with LibreOffice Calc. That requires a bit more effort
now. I guess I have to go back to uxa again.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1510970] Re: Intel driver crashes on Ubuntu 15.10

2015-11-13 Thread Anoop Karollil
Seems to be working, for people running Ubuntu 15.10, the location of
the file (20-intel.conf) with the contents that Georgi mentions above is
/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d (rather than /etc/X11).

You can check if SNA is enabled by:

cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep SNA

If you see it in the log, reboot after creating 20-intel.conf file as
described above and you shouldn't. And hopefully the crashes will go
away. Initial testing seems to indicate it fixes it for me.

2015-11-03 Thread aldebx
@slavikz, could you please try using kernel 4.3? In my case I didn't run
into this issue any more ever since I upgraded several days ago.
Upcoming kernels can be downloaded from http://kernel.ubuntu.com

2015-11-03 Thread Marcin Miszczuk
Hello; i have had the same issues on others DE like Manjaro, Mageia and Linux
Mint. Now, i'm trying Antergos (Arch distro with Gnome default); crashes
continue;i've found this site
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Intel_graphics and i did this: to enable
KMS during the initramfs stage. To do this, add the i915 module to the MODULES
line in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf. And i've changed  LDM  for GDM. For now, since
few days, crashes stopped.
Cheers;

In may case disabling animations just decrease number of crashes from
couple crashes per day to couple crashes per week.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1510970] Re: Intel driver crashes on Ubuntu 15.10

2015-11-02 Thread Johannes Merkert
Today I had a scenario where I could reproduce the Bug: I opened
LibreOffice Writer and inserted areas into the document. The first one
always worked but when I created the second area the X-server crashed.

I also noticed that apport took longer with each crash. After the third
crash I always killed apport because it prevented me for more than 30s
to log in again.

Could you give some update on the status of this bug? Is somebody from Intel
working on this?
I have to downgrade to an older Ubuntu version if this bug can't be fixed soon.

Disabling animations did not help me. There are less crashes but still
happens. Almost everytime when I try to reply to a mail or open calendar
event in Thunderbird. This is not happening on other machines with non-
intel graphic cards.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1510970] Re: Intel driver crashes on Ubuntu 15.10

2015-11-02 Thread Anoop Karollil
I can reproduce this consistently by opening up a calendar event in
Thunderbird. I also could reproduce this consistently when I opened up a
chat log dialog in Pidgin - but I could work around it by disabling
animations via CompizConfigSettingsManager. @Johannes, you could try
that work around, but yes, please fix this. I think booting into a
different kernel fixes the problem, but I have things installed that
depend on the latest kernel.
