On 2010-11-30T18:47:00+00:00 Chris wrote: Created attachment 463801 abrt report from Xorg crash Description of problem: If you attempt to use the X font server (xorg-x11-xfs) on Fedora 14 with the Fedora 14 X server, the X server will crash on many or any operation that seems to involve inventorying fonts. The minimal set of packages over a stock install necessary to do this seems to be xfs itself and the 100dpi bitmapped fonts, but it's possible that other font types will also do this. (I have not attempted to do an exhaustive inventory.) Reverting back to the Fedora 13 X server (and dependent drivers) on a Fedora 14 system avoids the crash. This crash happens with all versions of the Fedora 14 X server that I have seen, both the one on the distribution image, the initial update in the updates repository, and the latest update. This may be the same bug as #651197 and #648608. I am refiling because I have somewhat different abrt traces and a minimal reproduction, but please feel free to mark this bug as a duplicate of one of the others as appropriate. Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): xorg-x11-xfs-1.0.5-8.fc14.x86_64 xorg-x11-fonts-100dpi-7.2-11.fc14.noarch xorg-x11-server-Xorg-1.9.1-3.fc14.x86_64 How reproducible: Completely Steps to Reproduce: 1. install a stock 64-bit Fedora 14 system (may repro on i686; haven't tried) 2. install xorg-x11-utils (for xlsfonts), xorg-x11-xfs and xorg-x11-fonts-100dpi 3. start xfs with '/etc/rc.d/init.d/xfs start' 4. log in and add the xfs server to your font path: xset fp+ unix/:7100 5. run xlsfonts; the server will immediately crash Actual results: Server crash. Expected results: List of fonts. Additional info: The stock xfs configuration serves the same fonts that the X server is already using, since both point to catalogue:/etc/X11/fontpath.d. This has let me see that just having X with the bitmapped fonts or just having X talk to xfs for fonts are not enough to create the crash. The crash can also be reproduced with Xvfb: Xvfb :1 -noreset & DISPLAY=:1 xset fp+ unix/:7100 DISPLAY=:1 xlsfonts Testing with Xvfb this way commonly shows a glibc error: *** glibc detected *** Xvfb: double free or corruption (!prev): 0x01d82210 *** (the address varies) I am attaching an abrt trace (from an Xorg crash, not Xvfb). Ivan Frederiks, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ . If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications-Accessories-Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report: apport-collect -p xorg-server REPLACE-WITH-BUG-NUMBER Please note, given you already have done this in a prior release, performing this on a release prior to Trusty would not be helpful. In doListFontsAndAliases(), if we get a Suspended result when the client is already sleeping with the same closure (I don't really understand enough what the code is doing to know if that's expected or not), then the xinerama_sleep code frees() the closure c, so when it next wakes, the closure c is being used after being freed. Being a use after free bug possibly explains why the original reporter is able to avoid the crash by changing the sequence of actions slightly. The crash is not observed after reverting the noted commit, or with xserver 1.8.2 Reply at: https://bugs.launchpad.net/xorg-server/+bug/794895/comments/0 On 2010-12-09T14:52:05+00:00 Jon TURNEY wrote: See also https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=658587 Reply at: https://bugs.launchpad.net/xorg-server/+bug/794895/comments/1 On 2010-12-09T16:27:42+00:00 Jajones wrote: Created attachment 40973 Possible fix Haven't tested this thoroughly, as I'm not convinced early-out is really the right way to handle Xinerama here, but I think this should fix the crashes at least. Hey idfred, You filed this bug report against natty, but I see it's still open and doesn't appear to have much activity recently. So, now that oneiric is released and stable, this may be a good point for you to upgrade and re-test if this issue is still present there. If it's solved in the new release and you think it's worth backporting the fix, please indicate that. Or if having the fix in the new release is good enough, feel free to close out the bug (or let us know and we'll close it.) If it's not solved, leave the bug report open. I can't promise we'll get to it (we get way more bugs filed than we can usually get to), but your testing and feedback can help out if and when we do. ** Changed in: xorg-server (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed = Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/794895 Title: Xorg crashes in doListFontsAndAliases To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/xorg-server/+bug/794895/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 794895] Re: Xorg crashes in doListFontsAndAliases
Well, strict answer is no, because there is only a workaround (not quite obvious to regular user) but there is no patch that actually fixes this bug. On the other hand it seems, that people on freedesktop.org bugzilla actually treat this bug as won't-fix. But preventing nVidia config tool (and maybe other tools) from writing FontPath unix/:7100 to xorg.conf could also be threated as a fix for this bug. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/794895 Title: Xorg crashes in doListFontsAndAliases To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/xorg-server/+bug/794895/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
