[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 994203] Re: Xorg freeze with Nouveau drivers

2012-12-29 Thread Dr Mike Brooks
I've been having similar experiences on 64 bit systems, both with an ATI
RADEON 4650 in my Desktop, and Intel HD (on chip i5 3210m) graphics. As
it affects Noveau, NVidia, ATI and Intel, it really does not seem to be
related to graphics drivers.

I suspect this is a much more frequent problem than reported as it
requires a fair bit of knowledge to extract the relevant logs upon a
crash. Thus the majority of bug reports about this problem get shot down
due to lack of attachments which obviously require the user knowing
how to drop to a shell and copy logs across using the command line. This
is a full unrecoverable system hang, just as bad as a Windows BSOD. It
is a major bug and needs attention.

The symptoms are as described above: suddenly, for no reason, in Ubuntu
12.04 and 12.10 the desktop will freeze with the launcher on the left
and any windows being unresponsive. Widgets in the taskbar at the top
continue to remain animated, but none of these respond to mouse clicks.
I am able to move the mouse, but nothing responds. I can drop to the
shell with Ctrl+Alt+F1. Restarting Compiz does not fix the problem.
Restarting Unity does not fix the problem. The only thing I can do is
reboot the system which obviously causes DATA LOSS from any open
programs.

While in the shell I took the liberty of making copies of syslog, dmesg,
Xorg.log and kern.log. Hopefully this will shed some more light on the
issue and stop Ubuntu devs from passing the buck to the graphics drivers
about this important bug.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 994203] Re: Xorg freeze with Nouveau drivers

2012-12-04 Thread Roman
I also suffer from random freezes with Nouveau driver in KUbuntu 12.10 (64 bit).
My graphics card is GeForce 7300 GT.
The issue occures when some KWin animation is being rendered (usually window
minimization).
This animation often stucks in some middle point, and I can no longer do
anything with my computer, except for cold reboot.
In the end of Xorg.log I find the following lines:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 994203] Re: Xorg freeze with Nouveau drivers

2012-08-26 Thread Chris Carlin
I'm seeing the same behavior (screen freeze, mouse still movable) from
nvidia. Still nothing interesting in the xorg log, but here's the end of
my dmesg:

[ 3361.843042] NVRM: Xid (:05): 9, Channel Instance 8069
status 001d
[ 3361.844898] NVRM: Xid (:05): 9, Channel 0020 Instance Intr

Card is NVIDIA Corporation C51 [GeForce 6150 LE] (rev a2)

The freezes were fewer after updating to kernel 3.4.0-030400-generic,
but they still happen.

I saved them by switching to VT.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 994203] Re: Xorg freeze with Nouveau drivers

2012-06-04 Thread Maarten Lankhorst
The problem is there are a million possible reasons why a freeze could
occur, usually nouveau dies after an invalid instruction or memory
access occurs. There is some work being done so the system won't
completely freeze in the future, but it's not complete yet. If the
screen freezes, can you log in from a different machine, grab
/var/log/Xorg.0.log and the output of 'dmesg'? This would make it easier
for me to pinpoint where exactly the bug is.

Ok just experienced the issue again but on 3.2.0-23 kernel. So it isn't
a kernel issue (for me). Though it definitely seems to happen less
often with the older kernel.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 994203] Re: Xorg freeze with Nouveau drivers

2012-05-30 Thread Robert Dyer
I'm having a similar bug with the radeon driver. Randomly (though often
when watching youtube) the screen would just stop updating. I could
move the mouse cursor around and I think it was accepting keyboard input
but nothing on the screen updated. I could ctrl-alt-f1 over and kill
the x session and everything would be fine for awhile again.

However, for me it just started happening which led me to test if it was
related to recent kernel upgrades. I rebooted with 3.2.0-23 and now I
don't seem to have this bug! I did not test 3.2.0-24, but I definitely
see the bug with 3.2.0-25.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 994203] Re: Xorg freeze with Nouveau drivers

2012-05-25 Thread Luke Plant
I switched to the ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver, and I got
just the same - freeze when using LibreOfficer writer (this time when
selecting text).

So perhaps this in an xorg bug, not just the nouveau drivers, or perhaps
the same bug is in both drivers.

Can we move this to High importance? In addition to the reasons
described before, I for one am in the position where I have no
alternative - the other drivers give the same result, and I cannot use
LibreOffice for typically more than a few minutes without a full freeze
that basically requires a reboot to fix. This is a very high impact bug!
I'm going to have to try another distro before long, because I do need
to use LibreOffice sometimes, and cannot do so at the moment.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 994203] Re: Xorg freeze with Nouveau drivers

2012-05-15 Thread Luke Plant
Is there any chance of increasing the importance of this bug?

This bug is the equivalent of BSOD (all your running apps have to be
terminated), and it's happening to me multiple times a day. I can barely
use LibreOffice at all, as it usually causes a freeze within a few
minutes of use. It's happening 'randomly' at other times too.

Based on the criteria for High importance here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Importance

...I'd classify this as severe impact on a small portion of Ubuntu
users, and it affects an essential hardware component. I would say it
also fits Renders essential features or functionality of the
application or dependencies broken or ineffective, as it means I
basically can't scroll in any LibreOffice application. So I'd say it
fulfils 2-3 of the criteria on that list, and only one is needed.

Thanks!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 994203] Re: Xorg freeze with Nouveau drivers

2012-05-11 Thread Luke Plant
I'm getting this quite regularly with LibreOffice when scrolling using
the scroll wheel. It has happened twice in Writer, within an hour, and
just now in Calc within a few minutes of opening it.

The whole interface freezes and does not respond to anything, but the
mouse still moves. I can still switch to a VT and run commands from
there. Restarting lightdm restores the system without a reboot.

I can't find anything in the logs that seems relevant, unfortunately -
looked in dmesg, kernlog, syslog, ~/.xsession-errors

Please let me know if there are commands I can run from a VT to help
debug this, as not being able to use LibreOffice without risking this is
a real killer for me.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 994203] Re: Xorg freeze with Nouveau drivers

2012-05-04 Thread Maarten Lankhorst
Can you get a dmesg blindly after a freeze? From what I can tell in the
Xorg log the card froze, which likely means there's more information in
the kernel log.
