[Ubuntustudio-bugs] [Bug 938751] Re: Images are washed out or colors are skewed in some apps (particularly Image Viewer and Chrome)

2023-04-03 Thread David
Hello, I experienced this issue as well (EOG 42 on Pop!_OS/Ubuntu 22.04
LTS). I just described it here:
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/eog/-/issues/289

I solved the issue by disabling the auto-generated colour profile in the
gnome settings.

As I said in the description, I can't assess if this issue is related to
some specific monitors (I have a ThinkPad T480 monitor), or it's a
common problem.

[Ubuntustudio-bugs] [Bug 1851573] Re: configuration file //.config/debconf-kde-helperrc not writable

2021-06-18 Thread David
Hmmm, at a loss. Created 2 VMs, one as control but with a root access
user, the other standard but using sudo - E to install kde.

Both gave the same error when attempting to install anything from the
software manager (strangely, synaptic is never an issue).

Thought it was XDG_CONFIG_HOME as it wasn't set for some reason - set it
- no change, although when queried (echo XDG_CONFIG_HOME) it shows
correctly after being set.

When file is manually created at /.config/defconf-kde-helperrc and
permissions are set, the error is gone (no need for logoff). I do notice
that installations seem to "pause" now, although maybe that's just in my
head. Seems resolved after setting owner and group the same (username
for both).

Of note - issue doesn't occur until kde is started. Can install kde but
as long as the plasma desktop isn't started, no error. Once the plasma
desktop is used, will get error on any display manager.

Anyway - I'm done. Fixed with /.config/debconf-kde-helperrc file
creation and permissions setting. I'm a rank amateur with this - think
we are on the right track but it'll likely take someone else to find an
elegant solution or heck...a patch for the program?

[Ubuntustudio-bugs] [Bug 1851573] Re: configuration file //.config/debconf-kde-helperrc not writable

2021-06-17 Thread David
Creating the .config folder and file works fine (for me anyway). Think
there may be some confusion as to the pathing - the .config folder
SHOULD be /home/username/,config - but, it's NOT. The command
//.config, at least in my case, is referring to a non-existent folder -
specifically /.config (yes - off the root directory). Of course, the
folder doesn't exist and even if it did, in it's location we wouldn't
have access to it.

Simple to "fix", but a bit clumsy
terminal - sudo su or whatever you gotta do to get root
cd /
mkdir .config
cd .config
touch debconf-kde-helperrc
cd /
chown -hR username .config

Inelegant, but whatever, it works. I've avoided too much command line
trickery as that's always a bit confusing for some folks (myself
included - just getting back into linux after years away, gotta say it's
AMAZING).

Anyway, be looking into the root cause of this issue as time allows, but
until then, it's working without error and the file doesn't seem to get
written to anyway (still 0 bytes)

Cheers

[Ubuntustudio-bugs] [Bug 1870395] [NEW] Ubuntu Studio 20.04 ZFS Option Fails to Boot

2020-04-02 Thread David R. Bergstein
Public bug reported:

As part of installation, I selected the experimental ZFS option. Ubuntu
Studio then installed without errors, however upon booting the new
system there was a zpool import failure and I was prompted at the initrd
to manually import the zfs datasets.

The workaround at initrd was to enter the following commands:

zpool import -R /root -N rpool
zpool import -R /root -N bpool
zfs mount -a
exit

The system then booted up normally, however the workaround above has to
be used for each subsequent boot.

** Affects: ubuntustudio
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

** Package changed: ubuntu => ubuntustudio

[Ubuntustudio-bugs] [Bug 1781637] [NEW] numpy not included with blender package

2018-07-13 Thread David Allyn
Public bug reported:

Blender 2.79 comes with Python package numpy by default. However it is
not included in the distribution through the package manager. I
initially asked a question, however the immediate answer to the question
was to report the bug.

More detail:

specifically, I'm beginning to use "Animation Nodes", but I can't
activate the add-on giving me the error: "...Animation nodes requires
the numpy package. Unfortunately the blender build you have does not
include it. Please download... " blah, blah.

After a bunch of googling around I was not able to find a good solution.
I also ran into problems actually downloading blender directly - Kubuntu
is giving me grief for some other issues.

So i decided to raise the issue with you - the source of the package,
and ask that you include it. I realize there is probably a good reason
why you removed it from blender, however it really needs to be included
so that we can use community developed add-ons.

If there is an official workaround, please let me know. Perhaps there
is a way to force blender to use the system-wide distribution?? (which
I've updated completely - great for using python - but animation nodes
are still having issues)

Thanks for taking a look!

[Ubuntustudio-bugs] [Bug 1280772] Re: ubuntu condensed bold font not shown correctly inside inkscape

2017-09-26 Thread David Millar
I'm still able to reproduce this in 0.92 on Fedora 25. I had some text
in an SVG that was rendered as Normal in Inkscape, but was set to Bold
in the UI. The PDF export showed the 'faux bold' effect since my system
does not have the proper bold version of the font. Additionally, when
clicking the style dropdown in the UI, the only available option was
'Normal' even though the initial setting was 'Bold'.

** Attachment added: "Example of initial setting and available settings."

No, this is due to recent versions of the font libs requiring
more stack space.

In main.cc, line 253, increase the stack size of the interface
thread:

  iface->thr_start (SCHED_OTHER, 0, 0x0002);

This should solve the issue.

[Ubuntustudio-bugs] [Bug 1708027] Re: aeolus crashed with SIGSEGV in memset()

2017-09-18 Thread David Kastrup
#6 also would be consistent with me seeing this problem only after
converting my system to 64 bits: it is perfectly conceivable that this
would increase the stack size requirements.

When I started computing, 128kB would have been double the total address
space (let alone local variables). Sigh.

[Ubuntustudio-bugs] [Bug 1395635] Re: export videos without sound

2017-07-11 Thread David Anderson
The suggestions about libmlt libmlt++3 and getting same from current
debian  (current there is libmlt++3_6.4.1-5_amd64.deb
libmlt6_6.4.1-5_amd64.deb)
won't install on x86_64 16.04 without getting several other things.
There are conflicts. Ugh.

With 16.04 x86_64 , Ganesh's suggestion is no help. The ppa has libmlt
6.0.0.0-2 too.

[Ubuntustudio-bugs] [Bug 1395635] Re: export videos without sound

2017-07-11 Thread David Anderson
libmlt libmlt++3 in Ubuntu 16.04 are still 6.0.0.0-2 .
So openshot still won't generate sound in an output video.
Debian current is 6.4.x.x for some x.x.
Openshot 2.3.4.

While nothing in openshot says what the grayed-out square/circle/slash
related to sound
in the attached property screenshot mean it is perhaps a hint
openshot won't write some sound?

** Attachment added: "Showing slash indicating sound generation refused"

[Ubuntustudio-bugs] [Bug 1703176] Re: jackd assert failure: jackd: rawmidi.c:268: snd_rawmidi_open_conf: Assertion `err >= 0' failed.

2017-07-09 Thread David Kastrup
I think that the problem is likely in

/usr/include/sound/asound.h:625

struct snd_rawmidi_params {
int stream;
size_t buffer_size; /* queue size in bytes */
size_t avail_min; /* minimum avail bytes for wakeup */
unsigned int no_active_sensing: 1; /* do not send active sensing byte
in close() */
unsigned char reserved[16]; /* reserved for future use */
};

struct snd_rawmidi_status {
int stream;
struct timespec tstamp; /* Timestamp */
size_t avail; /* available bytes */
size_t xruns; /* count of overruns since last status
(in bytes) */
unsigned char reserved[16]; /* reserved for future use */
};

Here are 4 uses of size_t which will result in different structures for
32-bit and 64-bit compilations even though 32-bit binaries can
communicate with a 64-bit kernel via ioctl.

So this would appear to require fixing in the ALSA headers of the kernel
and recompiling alsa-lib with the changed headers.

I think using unsigned rather than size_t should work fine in this
regard. However, there are also structures using snd_pcm_uframes_t
which is typedeffed to unsigned long and thus should also be
architecture-dependent.

It's not clear to me why or how the respective ioctl calls would work
for PCM here when running with a 32-bit alsalib/executable and a 64-bit
kernel.

[Ubuntustudio-bugs] [Bug 1665979] Re: jack_server_control crashed with SIGSEGV in __strncmp_ia32()

2017-03-02 Thread David Kastrup
This is an upstream bug. I read in a source repository (mirror?)
https://github.com/jackaudio/example-clients/blob/master/server_control.c#L151-L154

struct option long_options[] = {
{"driver", 1, 0, 'd'},
{"client", 1, 0, 'c'},
};

This is missing a final entry {0, 0, 0, 0} to end the array. Does
anybody have an idea who to contact?

Marking as security; either Firefox is wrong or libavcodec is vulnerable
and probably we need security people to look at it to determine which
one it is...

[Ubuntustudio-bugs] [Bug 1502701] Re: The USE_TYPO_METRICS flag is not set in the OS/2 table of Latin Modern Math

2016-06-29 Thread David Venhoek
I can attest that this is (as of 29-06-2016) still an issue, and it
makes mathematical reference material such as http://dlmf.nist.gov/10.6
somewhat annoying to read. a fix would be highly appreciated

For reference, this is on Ubuntu 14.04.4 LTS

Bug description:
  Dear Maintainer,

lmodern contains version 1.950 of the modern font. In this version,
the USE_TYPO_METRICS flag is not set in the OS/2 table of Latin Modern
Math, which can lead to excessive line spacing. See
  http://www.microsoft.com/typography/otspec/os2.htm#fss

This bug is fixed upstream, please upgrade to version 1.959:

This bug is also fixed in Debian:

[ Rationale: Starting with Gecko 31, the typo metrics are used when either
USE_TYPO_METRICS is set or the font contains a MATH table. However, starting
with Gecko 43, it will only be used when USE_TYPO_METRICS is explicitly set:

Even a very basic test of this extension fails. First, I create some
text, then select it, convert to paths, ungroup. Then I create from 1 2
3 4 a box with the pencil or pen tool, being sure that I continue the
line all the way until I have a closed box. Then convert to paths.
Then I select all the text paths, then the box path, and run the
Extension>Modify Path>Perspective tool, which either causes the box to
only disappear, or only the first letter of the text to disappear. The
text is not mapped to the box. If fails reliably. It does not work at
all.

I've used this extension before, and had it work. I've checked my steps
and this is how the Perspective extension is supposed to be used.

[Ubuntustudio-bugs] [Bug 1504175]

2015-12-05 Thread David Henningsson
The easy way out is just to blame the hardware. The harder way is to
make sure we don't block other things while waiting for the hardware.
Which should be possible - the tricky thing is to avoid creating races
at the same time...

Thanks. It seems the big hickup (about 2 seconds) is below. Because
pavucontrol starts recording from all sources, that includes the usb
webcam mic. Just to check if this is the actual cause, could you try
disconnecting the webcam and see if the problem goes away?

Installed: 0.3.6-1
Candidate: 0.3.6-1

After recording a session with gtk-recordMyDesktop, a dialog pops up
claiming that encoding is in process and that closing the window or
canceling will discard the record of the session. The dialog includes
a progress bar which never advances. My current configuration for
gtk-recordMyDesktop is to encode on the fly, and the session *is*
recorded to an ogg file in my home directory, but gtk-recordMyDesktop
doesn't seem to realize this and instead scares me by acting broken
and claiming it is going to destroy my data.

My gtk-recordmydata configuration file (written automatically, I
  haven't edited it) is attached.

[Ubuntustudio-bugs] [Bug 902618] Re: Blender crashes when an object is selected

2014-12-03 Thread David R. Miller
With Blender 2.71 on Xubuntu 14.04, right-click often crashes as
described above when using the Intel integrated GUI (HD 4600, Mesa
drivers 10.1.3), but never when using the discrete Nvidia GTX 870M GPU
with Nvidia graphics driver 331.38.

Title:
Blender crashes when an object is selected

Status in blender package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Blender crashes nondeterministically, but when it occurs, it's
immediately following a right-click on an object. I can right-click
an unpredictable number of times just fine, but then suddenly poof!
Blender instantly vanishes and I'm looking at the command line.
Sometimes the very first right-click after starting Blender will crash
  it.

All Blender 2.5x and 2.6x show this crash, including a recent 2.6
compiled from source. All versions of Blender were obtained as
binaries in tarballs from the official Blender site, except source
obtained through their svn (or was it git?) repository. What about
the official Ubuntu package for Blender? Tried it too, and it
  crashes.

I had been using ubuntu 11.04, with xubuntu-desktop added, when this
problem started. When 11.10 came out, I hoped it would fix the crash
by updating some hypothetical buggy library or something, but no it
  didn't.

It's a Heisenbug in that all attempts to create a small simple scene
for testing don't lead to a crash. Apparently the bug senses when
I'm doing serious work. Scenes that do crash have meshes of only a
few hundred quads, only 3 or 4 lights, and default textures. There's
plenty of CPU power and RAM.

I suspect something other than Blender itself is the problem. Blender
ran fine for hours at a time, but started crashing about three weeks
ago. Memory, disk check out ok, and all other complex software runs
fine. From years of experience with computers, software development
and Linux, I get the impression it's a problem with some library or
X11 version mismatch, maybe something with the windows manager or
desktop system, or a misconfiguration of any of these.

I will be happy to run any special debuggers or diagnostics to get to
  the bottom of this.

  Description: Ubuntu 11.10

[Ubuntustudio-bugs] [Bug 1322968] Re: Changing country leads to invalid locale

2014-10-02 Thread David Fendrich
This just happened to me. It screws up all the programs, including
Konsole, Emacs and Chrome, so I cannot type unicode characters in any of
them. My /etc/default/locale is good, but the setlocale.sh (which it
took a lot of bug hunting to track down) overrides my choices with a
locale that does not exist and cannot be generated.

Title:
Changing country leads to invalid locale

Status in “kde-runtime” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
New installation of Kubuntu 14.04 and upgraded via kubuntu-ppa.
Initially, country is set to United States. The locale settings are
  the following:

  ~/.kde/env$ cat setlocale.sh
  export LANG=en_US.UTF-8
  export LANGUAGE=en:el:en
  export LC_NUMERIC=en_US.UTF-8
  export LC_TIME=en_US.UTF-8
  export LC_MONETARY=en_US.UTF-8
  export LC_PAPER=en_US.UTF-8
  export LC_IDENTIFICATION=en_US.UTF-8
  export LC_NAME=en_US.UTF-8
  export LC_ADDRESS=en_US.UTF-8
  export LC_TELEPHONE=en_US.UTF-8
  export LC_MEASUREMENT=en_US.UTF-8

Then, I change Country to Greece, via System Settings. Locale changes
  as follows:

  export LANG=en_GR.UTF-8
  export LANGUAGE=en:el:en
  export LC_NUMERIC=en_GR.UTF-8
  export LC_TIME=en_GR.UTF-8
  export LC_MONETARY=en_GR.UTF-8
  export LC_PAPER=en_GR.UTF-8
  export LC_IDENTIFICATION=en_GR.UTF-8
  export LC_NAME=en_GR.UTF-8
  export LC_ADDRESS=en_GR.UTF-8
  export LC_TELEPHONE=en_GR.UTF-8
  export LC_MEASUREMENT=en_GR.UTF-8

As far as I know, en_GR.UTF-8 is not a valid entry. A severe loss of
functionality is that accents cannot be set properly to greek vowels.
  Changing manually setlocale.sh to:

  export LANG=el_GR.UTF-8
  export LANGUAGE=en:el:en
  export LC_NUMERIC=el_GR.UTF-8
  export LC_TIME=el_GR.UTF-8
  export LC_MONETARY=el_GR.UTF-8
  export LC_PAPER=el_GR.UTF-8
  export LC_IDENTIFICATION=el_GR.UTF-8
  export LC_NAME=el_GR.UTF-8
  export LC_ADDRESS=el_GR.UTF-8
  export LC_TELEPHONE=el_GR.UTF-8
  export LC_MEASUREMENT=el_GR.UTF-8

  solves the issue.

[Ubuntustudio-bugs] [Bug 1332900] Re: [Alienware 18, Realtek ALC668, Speaker, Internal] Playback problem

2014-06-24 Thread David Henningsson
One other thing I noticed is upon startup/load of Ubuntu, at the top
of the screen it says something about snd hda codec module has bad
taint.

This is the alsa daily build module. It is printing an warning message
to inform you that you're running a module that was not compiled with
the rest of the kernel. You can ignore it.

tee: /sys/class/sound/hwC0D0/reconfig: No such file or directory

Hmm, maybe this is related to the daily HDA DKMS too, somehow. There has
been some reorganising upstream w r t the devices. Try uninstalling the
daily DKMS again, reboot, and retry.

Are there any guides for this hdajackretask as to how I can do what
you say, otherwise how might I get started experimenting with
hdajackretask?

Omgubuntu wrote a small introduction here, not sure how helpful it is:

http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2013/12/turn-headphone-jack-microphone-jack-
ubuntu

 @David : I think you meant modprobe.d (not modprobe.conf)

Yes, thanks.

Status in “alsa-driver” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
Bug seems similar to another reported bug with Alienware 18 laptops.
It should be Realtek ALC3661 however it shows up as ALC668. Sound only
comes out of 1 Channel, which appears to be subwoofer. Unlike the
other bug, closing the lid appears to have no effect on sound.

When doing the bug test, it said sound would alternate between 2
channels, however I only heard one consistent sound. It did not
alternate. I believe it is playing from the subwoofer only. I would
love to know more about how to route the sound to the proper speakers.

I attempted modifications to daemon.conf in pulse and .asoundrc but
have not found the correct configuration yet.

This laptop is equipped with 2.1 Surround and should play sound
accordingly. Also, alsamixer only shows (1) speaker control, whether
this is normal I am unsure.
