[Unattended] Manually disabling automatic login/autolog.pl

2005-07-12 Thread Tony Worrall

Hi,

Having used unattended to install a windows server, which didn;t have
the correct network drivers I manually poked it through the rest of the
process, however, now it tried to login on restart automatically, (admin
username and password changed), and I want to turn that off.

Perl and everything else is uninstalled, is there a quick
registry/security setting to turn this off manually I could use?

It's quite strange, after we press 'I' for Ignore, the updates run

[Unattended] Very last custom steps and Cleanup.

2005-03-18 Thread Tony Worrall
Hi List,
I need to run something at the end of unattnded which uninstalls 'client
for ms networks' and 'file and printer sharing', also, I need to run
some cleanup of the NETINST directory and another custom directory on
the hard drive of the target PC.

When I run my code for uninstalling the two network items, unattended
can't access the network to get to todo.pl for the last reboot.

Does anyone have any suggestions or example code for cleanup and running
something right at the end of an unattended install?

The network thing is important as these are online servers.
Thanks in advance.

Re: [Unattended] File copy fails

2005-02-24 Thread Tony Worrall
Hi,
I had this error on an old desktop machine I was using to test
unattended, before I started using it on potential production machines.
The atapi/sys error persisted stayed no matter what I tried with
unattended so, eventually, I gave up trying to install onto that
machine, tried another one and *bam* it all worked perfectly!

The only thing I can guess at causing the failed copy error would either
be a slightly iffy hard drive.

If anyone does discover a fix for this issue, I'd still like to hear it,
after all, I have an old desktop machine sitting there doing nothing :)

Sorry I couldn't be of more assistance Heather.

[Unattended] PXE Install Solution?

2005-02-08 Thread Tony Worrall
Hi, I'm trying to make an unattended installer that takes a file with
something like:
macaddress|osversion|ipaddress|admin username|password
It should be able to install an OS (based on osversion - say redhat,
debian, freebsd or Windows) based on the MAC address that it uses to get
an OS with.
for RedHat, its easy. I can just make a mapping between macaddress and
ipaddress in dhcpd.conf, and have it load a PXELinux.cfg file that has
something like:
LABEL linux
 KERNEL pxeboot.linux/vmlinuz
 APPEND initrd=pxeboot.linux/initrd.img ks=http:192.168.167.254/pxe.php
ksdevice=eth0
and I can write a PHP page that'll parse the above file, and generate a
kickstart config with the appropriate ip and password.

However, I've no idea how to approach this with windows. Can someone
recommend how I change the unattended installer to use a different IP or
username, based on it's mac address ?

Re: [Unattended] A few windows tweaking questions...

2005-02-07 Thread Tony Worrall
Stefan Kell wrote:
Hi Tony,
First: you didn't specify operating system (Windows 2000, 2003, XP?)
You didn't mention IIS or ftp server and you did not say local user or
domain user. This makes answering a little bit difficult.

My apologies, Primarily Windows 2003. However, eventually, all three.
As they're all NT based, a solution for each of the questions I've asked
will probably work across Win2k, Win2k3,and XP.

Second: automating and scripting is not the Microsoft way (TM), they
like people to klick and klick and klick and so on. So you have to
build your own tools or use the ideas of someone else ;-)

Yes, this is true, however, they do provide lots of scripting support
and so on for large OEMs and system builders.

If you are really interested in scripting you should take a look at perl
(which is used by unattended anyway). A good starting point is Win32
Perl Scripting by Dave Roth, homepage: "http://www.roth.net/perl/";,
Amazon: ("http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1578702151";). On pages
49-51 there is a script for renaming local accounts.

I've already coded a small vbs script for renaming accounts which is
working well for the administrator account. I may reuse it, however, I
was asking more about taking input and generating this script
dynamically. I'm thinking a batch file approach, fired from RunOnce
might do the trick.

Regarding ftp: What's wrong with Microsoft's own iisftp.vbs?
"http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/WindowsServ/2003/standard/proddocs/en-us/Default.asp?url=/resources/documentation/WindowsServ/2003/standard/proddocs/en-us/iisftp.asp";
I don't use it because I would never use IIS, but this script sounds
like what you want.

It looks like the way forward, thanks!
File sharing: use a firewall and plock the wellknown ports. So if you
need the shares again for updating then you can do it anytime. And you
are using a firewall anyway, don't you?

I won't need these shares again, disabling 'File and printer sharing'
and 'client for microsoft networks' upon completetioon of unattended is
essential for these systems. I'm no closer to finding an automatic way
of achieving this.

Yes, I use multiple firewall layers, NAT and ip based restrictions.
(lol, gotta love the tone there).

Thanks for your help stefan, there's been a couple of useful suggestions.

Re: [Unattended] A few windows tweaking questions...

2005-02-04 Thread Tony Worrall
Hey Stefan, thanks for replying.
I did check technet and found little info pertaining to automating these
tasks.

The services are installed by default with TCP-IP on the local area
connection and are needed during unattended for windows updates etc. I
want to turn them off when I no longer require network shares.

The desktop article you linked to might work, I'll try it. :)
When I say FTP server, I mean the FTP functionality within IIS6.0. I
have it installed and have removed anonymous users, but I want it
automatically stopped when installation is complete. I was unable to
find a metabase.xml entry to specify this.

Finally, renaming a user I can do with VBS, it's setting the password
and doing it all from a batch file which prompts for the values I've
having trouble with. Does anyone know how to do a batch file/somehing
to prompt for user input and then run some dynamically generated vbs?

Thanks again for the reply.

[Unattended] A few windows tweaking questions...

2005-02-03 Thread Tony Worrall
Hi,
There's a couple of small tweaks I want to make to the unattended
windows installs, I'm not having much luck trying to find help online,
I'm hoping people here may have the experience/insight to help.

1. Automatically disable "Client for Microsoft Networks" and "File and
Printer Sharing" for Local Area Connection after the install is complete.

2. Automatically set a desktop background for all users after install is
complete, I can already set it fro tghe .default user in the registry,
with the key: [HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop]
"Wallpaper"="c:\\windows\\800x600.bmp" However, once a user logs in, it
disappears.

3. Disable FTP, I want FTP installed, (working), but I need the default
FTP site in a 'stopped' state.

4. Provide a batch file at the end of the install process which will
prompt for, rename and set a password for an already setup user.

Hoping ye can help me out... :)

[Unattended] Windows Server 2003 Updates?

2005-02-02 Thread Tony Worrall
Hi Patrick/All,
A couple of weeks ago, there was some windows updates and unattended was
updated to reflect the changes.

In CVS, version 1.73 of the batch for for win2k3 included the comment -
"Remove MS03-045, since it is superseded by MS05-002."

When I install a win2k3 server and connect it to the windows update
site, it lists MS03-045 as a critical update.

Do I need to put this back in? Or is Microsoft just slow to detect that
we have MS05-002 installed?

[Unattended] Avoiding partitioning choices?

2005-02-01 Thread Tony Worrall
Hi,
The documentation says I should be able to use the text below in the meta_ section of unattended.txt to do this, unfortunatly, it hasn't worked.

[_meta]
   fdisk_lba=1
   fdisk_cmds="fdisk /clear 1;fdisk /pri:4000;fdisk /activate:1"
   fdisk_confirm=0
   format_cmd="format /y /z:seriously /q /u /a /v: c:"
   replace_mbr=1
I also need something slightly different, Option 4, 12Gb C:\ rest D:\
Using DOS boot cd, does it really matter which disk I use?
Hope someone can help with this or point me in the right direction.
Thanks,

Tony Worrall

Hi Kaari,
On first try, I changed your .iss file from NTAuth to SQL Auth, and it
failed.

Then, I switched back to NT Auth and everything ran fine, just need to
add in a .reboot 194 now :)

Thanks for the help!

Hi all,
I have SQL Server installing silently after a Windows 2003 Standard
Server install, however, the service pack, sp3a, doesn't seem to work
silently, yet installs fine otherwise.

Is there anyone out there already doing this as part of
unattended? If
so, please let me know how you've approached this.

I'm using this to install SQL 2000 plus SP3a:
=Begin sql2000.bat=
:: OPTIONAL: Install Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Personal Edition
@Echo off
:: Reminder, things get installed in REVERSE order!
:: SP3 Installation
todo.pl ".reboot-on 194 %Z%\updates\sql2ksp3_de\SQL2KDEF.BAT"
:: Server Installation
todo.pl ".reboot-on 194 %Z%\packages\sql2000\sqlins.bat"
=End sql2000.bat=
SQLINS.BAT and SQL2KDEF.BAT are the default ones provided in the
installation directories, just make sure
to provide the serial number, login type and password in sqlins.iss and
sql2kdef.iss.
HTH,
Kaari

[Unattended] File copy fails

2005-01-20 Thread Tony Worrall
Hi all,
I'm seeing a problem where Win2k3 systems being setup by unattended copy
all the files over the network and then reboot, when they come back up,
windows setup starts 'copying files' and can't find atapi.sys. I can
skip the file and it will continue for about 3 or 4 files till in comes
to the next one it can't copy and so on and so on. I think this is the
stage of windows setup where it extracts the atapi.sy_ to atapi.sys (ie.
second reboot).

Having sucessfully setup a Win2k3 Web edition install with unattended, I
was quite chuffed, I'm pretty sure I didn't change anything with the
setup which might have affected it this way.

I added another OS, Win2k3 Standard Edition, edited the config.pl a
little and since this problem happened I have removed my changes. Tried
since on two seperate systems and it fails at the same point everytime!

Can anyone shed some light/experience on this?

I've read back over the archives of the list and seen that the

The behavior I'm looking for is to boot a raw system from the cd,
select the NIC and then have it partition to this scheme
automatically, reboot, select NIC, automatically format and continue
to choosing OS and Apps.

Any and all help and suggestions appreciated.
