It didn't work for me (bluescreen while installing XP). Better solution for me was to set up an MS SUS server, install XP with SP1 only and configure to get updates directly from SUS server. With SUS1 only security patches are possible to install, but M$ plans SUS2 with support not only for OS. Give it a try if you have a chance to do so. The problem is that in an insecure environment, the OS is vulnerable DURING the install. During the Blaster worm attack I personally verified that the worm was able to infect a new computer during the graphical part of the install. If you have a worm/hacker attack inside your network, any new computer may be infected during the install. For XP and 200SP4 there's only 2 hotfixes that are really necessary during install. This is the Workstation/Messenger and the RPC fix. These two must be slipstreamed. Any other patches can be installed afterwards, with SUS, automatic updates or any other method you like. -- Dag Nummedal ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) --- The SF.Net email is sponsored by EclipseCon 2004 Premiere Conference on Open Tools Development and Integration See the breadth of Eclipse activity. Re: [Unattended] Security patches
Hi, I found an interesting tool that may be useful to integrate hotfixes in the windows distribution: http://greenmachine.msfnhosting.com/XPCREATE/ . XPCREATE is a utility program that will combine an original XP distribution and assorted hotfixes and updates to produce an up-to-date XP Distibution CD. XPCREATE allows the user to define custon installations and setup programs, but it's main richness lies in the slipstreaming of most available updates and hotfixes, thus insuring the integrity of both the initial installation, and the physical CD media. Slipstreaming the latest hotfixes and updates is important in avoiding possible vulnurability attacks during the setup phase, and in avoiding the need to re-apply hotfixes after a windows component is added or removed. The main goals of XPCREATE are: 1. Provide an automated procedure to produce a Windows XP Distribution that, once installed, will require zero updates, either critical or recommended, as shown on the Windows Update Site. 2. Integrate the service packs, hotfixes and updates as completly as possible into the Windows XP Distribution. 3. Perform the above two tasks with a minimum of user intervention or file manipulation in order to make Updated XP CD Distributions available to all XP users, regardless of level of expertise. . Unfortunately at the moment it only works for WindowsXP and the international language support is not trivial :-( Regards Rosario Patrick J. [Unattended] Security patches
Can security patches be integrated in the windows install files in the same way service packs are? Thanks Oriol de los Santos -Original Message- From: Patrick J. LoPresti [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, January 22, 2004 8:59 PM To: Steffen Kaiser Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [Unattended] when does the undis3c driver work Steffen Kaiser [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: reading the docs I get the impression that the undis3c driver should work for almost any recent card. I tested the driver with 3c905C and 3c940 / 3c2000 cards, but it didn't found the adapters. In DRIVERS.txt it is hinted that the driver requires a PXE/UNDI stack, hence, it is working in PXE only? Correct. It depends on the UNDI stack, which is only available when you boot using PXE. (You also need to provide the right options to PXELINUX. The inst target does this in our distribution. It is badly named and I plan to fix it eventually.) - Pat --- The SF.Net email is sponsored by EclipseCon 2004 Premiere Conference on Open Tools Development and Integration See the breadth of Eclipse activity.
