[UC] metal thefts in the neighborhood
A friend of mine at 44th and Baltimore and I (45th and Kingsessing) have been robbed of our collections of hairpin fencing in the past few days. Yes, they were locked up. One of the metal recycling containers was taken from Clark Park. -Lew You are receiving this because you are subscribed to the list named UnivCity. The lower floors of these houses have the good stuff--cherry or oak. The third floor was usually something a little less expensive-- like pine. As to whether anyone would want them- Yes, as a replacement--but it's not like they're collectors items or anything. Call Restoration Hardware and see if they're interested. Since we already have all the doors we need, I'm thinking of selling them. What type of wood was used for doors in these old houses (1896)? What would the original wood doors be worth? [UC] Burglaries
I had a lengthy conversation with one of the local town watch reps and I was informed that there have been an incredibly large number of burglaries in the area, spreading from campus and continuing west to 49th beyond, Market st. to Chester Ave. A large number of them have been reported along Chester avenue; in many cases, the perps are gaining access to apartment buildings, and then breaking into individual apartments by kicking in doors. Houses are also being targeted. The majority of these incidents have taken place between the hours of 9AM and 3:00PM, when many people are not home. Two suspects have been captured for a number of the burglaries, and confessed to several dozen; they are awaiting trial. However, it was also discovered from the two suspects that there is a larger crime ring involved. Burglaries have continued since; the most recent one I am aware of occurred at a house on the 4700 block of Springfield on Saturday afternoon. Surveillance cameras captured images of two suspected individuals in one of the incidents; I will see what I can do to get copies of those images and pass them on. You should remind your neighbors to keep their doors and windows locked when they are not home, and to keep an eye on neighbors homes as well. *It is vitally important that people realize that it is okay to call the police to report suspicious behavior. Loitering and canvassing are two immediate signs that something might be taking place, and you should not hesitate to report something that doesn't seem right.* (In one case, a suspect had a bucket outside the building to make it appear as though he was washing his car outside a building; he was confronted and ran when asked why he was washing his car without any water!) [UC] Palin/Biden VP debate watching tonight at Abbraccio
Roger Harman tells me that Abbraccio will be featuring tonight's VP debate on multiple tv screens, so my husband and I are going to head over for a late dinner and drinks at the bar. (The debate starts at 9 p.m., and the Phillies are playing at 6:07, so hopefully they'll have already won their game by debate time.) Here's an invite for others to join us! Abbraccio was packed last Friday night to watch Obama McCain's debate. It was good to watch along with neighbors friends, and I think that this debate will be even more interesting for a group event. [UC] DP Letter about UCD and Baltimore Ave
Here is a letter in the DP written by a Matt Wolfe. Mr. Wolfe raises a number of very important issues for members of our community to consider. Last week, I noticed a councilmen resolution to dissolve a special services district in Frankford. Should we come together as a community and ask for public hearings and a review of all such districts operating in our city??? Some of these special service districts are a front for other entities with problematic agendas other than service. Not all would be deemed a threat to their communities, but I would strongly support dismantling this corporate/Penn creation, UCD. Penn could more efficiently fund the garbage collection services necessary for the student ghetto through the city Dept. of Streets. http://media.www.dailypennsylvanian.com/media/storage/paper882/news/2008/10/02/Opinion/Your-Voice.Letters-3464778.shtml Let's give this some serious thought! I've called the police before about a theft in progress, the attitude from the PPD is yawn. Re: [UC] Scale and its adjudicators
PCPC did consider physical size and scale an issue, and a serious-enough one to reject the proposal in April -- but not, I repeat, as a deal-breaker. The developer changed the proposal to reduce the impact of its height, so PCPC approved an amended proposal in September. To quote from your link: “'Initially we had major issues with the height of 11 stories,' explained the Philadelphia Planning Commission staff’s Acting Executive Director, Gary J. Jastrzab of the staff’s decision to endorse the hotel towards the meeting’s close. 'But with the cut-outs,' added Jastrzab in reference to the five rooms that were removed from the hotel’s top story, giving it the appearance of a reduced scale from certain angles, 'the staff views this development as a very difficult trade-off.'” Par for the course with PCPC. Trade-off is the key word here. It's not PCPC's style to treat any one troublesome factor in a complex case as a line in the sand that cannot be crossed, no matter what other benefits might accrue. Instead it'll bash away at such factors until it gets some give-back, then meet the developer somewhere in the middle. Not what opponents in Spruce Hill wanted, for sure ... but also no sign of unusual behavior or special treatment. PCPC acted no differently before Greenburger from Penn took over its lead. On to the next inning. The lineup will be different, so perhaps there'll be pitching changes as well on both sides. -- Tony West UNIVERSITY*CITOYEN wrote: from the beginning, the pcpc DID consider the physical size and scale of the hotel, and deemed it within its scope. on april 15 the pcpc rejected the hotel based on its height, and even after considering revisions to the hotel on april 25, pcpc admitted that 'it's still an 11-story building in the middle of the street' http://tinyurl.com/4jdug6 again, on may 20, the pcpc considred the hotel's height and scale: http://tinyurl.com/3p9h3v [pcpc chairman] Altman's remarks responded directly to many of the concerns made by those opposed to the construction of the hotel at the 40th and Pine Street location. These included how the hotel's development would not only clash with the surrounding architecture of the West Philadelphia Streetcar Suburb and the Woodland Terrace's national historic designation where it is proposed to be built but also how its height of 115 ft. would loom over the other residences of 35 ft. but on may 20, the pcpc tabled the question of the hotel until a future meeting. then, on september 16, the pcpc approved the hotel. how? by approving a traffic study and telling neighbors that they would 'get used to' the 'shock' of the hotel's size and scale. that was the 'job' that pcpc couldn't do in may, but one that it could do in september: by september, the question of the hotel's size and scale had been reduced to one of traffic, and penn's alan greenberger had been appointed head of pcpc. Anthony West wrote: PCPC did consider physical size and scale an issue, and a serious-enough one to reject the proposal in April -- but not, I repeat, as a deal-breaker. pcpc DID consider the hotel's height and scale, from the very beginning. it was that serious. but pcpc couldn't justify approving the hotel's height and scale in the face of neighbors' opposition and a pcpc staffer's reservations (even after the developer's revisions). so pcpc tabled their decision in may, scrubbed the neighbors' testimony from their minutes, and instead used an approved traffic study months later in september as their justification to approve the hotel -- while telling the neighbors they would 'get used to' the 'shock' of the hotel's height and scale. the hotel's height and scale was always an issue that pcpc considered. they chose to ignore it, to minimize its importance, and to choose, instead, another issue (traffic) as their reason for approving the hotel. that is why I originally asked: 'what happened to the main issue: the hotel's massive scale and height and footprint?'
