[UC] Christmas Party

2008-12-19 Thread J. Matthew Wolfe
Denise and I are having some friends over tonight, Saturday, December 20 at
our home at 4256 Regent Square (between Chester and Woodland on 43rd). We
will kick off at 7PM or so and expect to run late. Santa Clause is expected
at around 8:30 PM or so for the kids.

We certainly do not know everyone on these three University City listservs,
but we are always happy to meet neighbors whom we have not met before. Feel
free to stop over sometime over the course of the evening and bring friends
and family.

Merry Christmas.

[UC] Fwd: truly unbelievable traffic signal boxes

You have to go to the link to see the size of these things. The
hard copy of the paper shows a picture from inside a cafe where the
new box (up against the building!) completely blocks the view. I
mean, WTF? We can make cameras the size of cigarette lighters, so
why do they have to be like this? This could be last straw for my
moving to Europe or someplace else that gives a damn about their
street life.

[UC] 311 system, corporate wins again

2008-12-19 Thread Glenn moyer

It’s adding insult to injury that this 311 scheme is introduced on the same day
as the libraries are to close! (See Inq. link below)

Here is another snow job from our leaders which is completely contradicted.
These platitudes are not believable compared to the real facts. As Camille
Barnett foreshadows, this is intended for a “strategic use.” It just ain’t the
one she suggests!

Any long term Philadelphian knows that the only thing which is not a problem
when calling city departments is looking up the initial phone number! If I
were a gambler, I’d lay 2 to 1 odds that this is being designed to serve
tourists in center city and our district, whom are looking for upscale extended
stay hotels.

Once again the little people are to invest in a Ponzi scheme hoping that riches
will trickle down from developers we make super rich. All, while the common
citizen is pushed beyond absurd “belt-tightening.”

Currently, when people call city departments they get:
1. A phone that rings continuously
2. An answering machine, and never a return call
3. Someone answers who says, “what do ya want from me. I don’t know
nothing.”

This 311 propaganda, this new and improved contact index, is ridiculous. We’ve
been given platitudes repeatedly from the current outfit even though the
reality makes them absurd. At best, it would be an ass-backward way to improve
customer services to citizens with phone books.

The city is buying new corporate technology from corporate buddies to solve a
non-existent problem, while a complete shake-up in city hall citizen services
is actually needed throughout the city systems. We don’t need technology; we
need good committed ethical leaders who would provide leadership and commitment
to improving citizen services from top to bottom!

I want to ask, what constituency would benefit from a specialized customer
service department? Wouldn’t it be nice if tourists could dial 311 to be
quickly linked with tourist aid services? That makes a hell of a lot more
sense to me!

Re: [UC] Throwing shoes available

2008-12-19 Thread Glenn moyer

I am saving my throwing shoes for the next time Dubya is in town. Am I bitter? Yes!Jim
He and the entire war gang need to be sent to an international court immediately.  I know the people of VT want to bust him, but I don't think the rest of the world trust the American process.
It seems much of the world is hopeful that Americans are serious about hope and change.  Sending them for trial in international court and decommissioning the global military-industrial imperial empire would be a great start for change!
Those shoes are needed for local, Dubya like, characters!
In solidarity with the brave citizens of Greece and Thailand,

Howdy neighbors,

Is anyone having any secret meetings with the anointed or at city hall? I have
a couple pair of throwing shoes available for free to a good upscale neighbor.

Let me know. I’ll have one of our good good friends, Tom Liesalot or Melani
Richndumb, drop them at your tax abated condo.

Your good good neighbor,
Glenny
