[UC] New UCity Towing Zone Proposed

2009-01-16 Thread Dave Axler
Currently under review by Council's Committee on Streets and Services
is Bill No. 080946, introduced in December by Councilmember Blackwell.

This bill would modify the Traffic Code by changing the established
towing zone locations in the University City area.

At present, the following are included in the tow zone, in the hours
as posted category:

South street, from the Schuylkill River to Thirty-third street, both
sides.
Spruce street, from Thirty-third street to Thirty-eighth street, both
sides.
Convention avenue, from South street to Thirty-fourth street, both
sides.

Thirty-eighth street, from Chestnut street to Sansom street, east side.
Thirty-eighth street, from Chestnut street to Walnut street, center
island.
Sansom street, from Thirty-eighth street to a point one hundred and
fifty-two feet

east thereof, north side.
Thirty-fourth street from Convention avenue to a point two hundred
ninety feet

south thereof, west side.]

Under the revised bill, the tow zone (still hours as posted) would
be substantially enlarged in all directions,

to cover the following:
On all streets from the Schullkill River on the east, University
avenue/Woodland
avenue on the south, Fortieth street on the west, and by a line along
Filbert street,
between Fortieth street and Thirty-fourth street, along Thirty-fourth
street to Arch street,
along Arch street, between Thirty-fourth street and the Schulykill
River.

[UC] [Ucneighbors] White Dog

2009-01-16 Thread Frank

I sent this the other day but it didn't arrive.

From the Inquirer:

Breaking some eggs: A house-cleaning and a back-of-the-house cleaning
have come to the landmark White Dog Cafe in University City. After
longtime owner Judy Wicks took on managing partner Marty Grims
(Moshulu, Du Jour), this week saw the firings of longtime chef Andy
Brown and staff. Workers then emptied the kitchen, power-washed it and
installed new equipment. New staff should be on board, as the
restaurant aims to reopen tomorrow night.

[UC] ALERT: ROBBERIES NEAR 48TH STREET

2009-01-16 Thread Patty Bulack
Hello All,

A neighbor from near 48th and Kingsessing let me know that he was beaten and
robbed at 7 pm on the 900 block of 48th St. last night (Thursday), right at
the corner of Windsor and 48th. One person confronted him as he walked
north on the sidewalk, cornering him against a parked van, and two (or more)
others jumped out behind him from where they had been hiding (likely from
behind a tall bush near the sidewalk). They knocked him to the ground and
got his wallet, while beating him up. They then ran down Windsor towards
49th St. He is not seriously injured, and did report it to the police.

I have heard of a few other incidents this week: two nights ago, a person
was robbed at 48th and Hazel, with the 3 assailants running down 48th to
Cedar and turning west. One of them was armed with a gun. Also, 3 or 4
nights ago, 2 women were robbed at 48th and Kingsessing.

All of these incidents happened in the early evening, between 7 and 9 pm.
There are not good descriptions that I know of, beyond the usual dark
hoodies. If I hear anything else, I will pass it along. Obviously, exercise
caution while you are out and about.

[UC] Re: [UC-Announce] ALERT: ROBBERIES NEAR 48TH STREET

2009-01-16 Thread MLamond
Hi, Patty, thanks for the warning. Have these incidents ALL been reported
to both the police the UCD? I've heard that our current 18th District
police captain is very good, and that we are targeted for extra crime-reduction
services. A few weeks ago undercover police followed 4 juveniles for TWO
HOURS,
from Kingsessing Ave., finally over to 47th St. outside of Abbraccio where
one of the 4 pulled a gun on a young woman walking down the street. The 4
undercover cops had the 4 juveniles down on the ground INSTANTLY. So it's
really, really important right now that they know that they need to have even
more
undercover guys out there right now, since obviously there are still more
criminals.

So, were these all reported?

[UC] Finally, an Apple store!

2009-01-16 Thread Frank
Not in the Radian where I wanted it but at 1619 Walnut St. This is the
site of the now-closed Brasserie Perrier and formerly KYW TV studio
where The Mike Douglas Show was taped. Everyone was on that show, from
John and Yoko to Totie Fields! Great choice.

In a word, yes. These incidents were all reported. We need to continue to
encourage each other to report any and all incidents, so that they can be
part of how the police respond. I have also heard that there are more
patrols. But the police can't do everything, and so we all need to do our
parts by practicing safe behaviors and being alert to unusual behavior, and
keeping an eye on each other.
