[UC] Juvenile crime prevention cut, Daily News

2010-03-15 Thread Glenn moyer
This Daily News story will give good folks something to read as they sit by the
Clark Park Paradise fountain.

Daily News: WHEN THE CITY'S Department of Human Services cut $150,000 from
the Don't Fall Down in the Hood rescue program for first-time juvenile
offenders, it might as well have cut a piece out of Archye Leacock's
heart...Leacock's program is a shadow of what it was only a year ago.

If the Clark Park Partnership needs more money for the new Clark Park Garden
of Eden, the criminal-born kids have been going to Recreation Centers and
libraries, since they can't afford soccer programs. Let's shut um down too!

MINE! When disaster strikes: The long road home for pets

Drexel University's Earle Mack School of Law Student Animal Legal
Defense Fund will sponsor an event on March 16 that explores legal
and ethical complications that emerge when natural disasters
separate pets from their owners. The event will start with
Philadelphia's premiere screening of MINE, an award-winning 2009
documentary that follows Hurricane Katrina survivors who tried to
reclaim pets that had been rescued, taken to animal shelters around
the U.S. and adopted by new owners. The 81-minute film chronicles
the custody battles that arise when two families love the same pet.
Following the film, a panel of speakers will address issues raised
in the film and this fascinating emerging area of the law.

Speakers include:

Joe Bednarik, Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission, will speak on
Evacuation Planning for Animals.
Barbara J. Gislason, founder of the ABA/TIPS Animal Law Committee,
and champion of the “Model Act Governing Standards for the Care and
Disposition of Disaster Animals,” which was endorsed by the ABA
House of Delegates in February. The Model Act is intended to provide
certainty of ownership for disaster animals by providing an owner
with a specific time frame by which the owner must reclaim companion
animals following a declared federal major disaster, and to provide
an animal shelter with specific guidelines as to how long disaster
animals must be held prior to their disposition.

Phil Kircher, Cozen O'Connor, will discuss his experience defending
a local owner of a Katrina dog sued by the original New Orleans owner.

PLUS, special guest “Katrina,” who found her way from New Orleans to
a new home in Pennsylvania.

Space is limited - registration at http://drexelmine.eventbrite.com.
Sandwiches and refreshments will be served.
Admission is free, but a $5 donation will be requested at the door
to benefit the Animal Relief Coalition for Haiti.

Date: Tuesday, March 16, 2010
Time: 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM
Location: Earle Mack School of Law, 3320 Market Street,
Philadelphia, Room 140

[UC] Tool Library's 2nd Anniversary Party this Saturday

2010-03-15 Thread Michael Froehlich
[image: West Philly Tool Library Logo]

Join us this Saturday, March 20th from 9-3 for the Tool Library's 2nd
anniversary. To celebrate, we'll be holding a* tool yard sale.*

That's right, over the past two years, we've been lucky enough to receive
hundreds of tool donations from members and other community members. And
while we're grateful to everyone for their support, it turns out that we
only need so many hammers, screwdrivers, or saws. To say nothing of the
pounds and pounds of nails, screws, tiles, switch plates, and assorted items
that we can't use (or can't figure out what they are.)

Plus, we'll also be selling several shop tools that have been donated to us
that are too heavy to effectively loan out, including two drill presses, a
large table saw, a band saw, bench grinder, and a stationery sander.

Of course, we'll also be accepting power tool donations. And did we mention
we'll have coffee and snacks?

On behalf of everyone at the Tool Library, thanks for your continuing
support.

--Michael, Ben, Morgan, Robert, Stacey, Eric, and Eugene

PS. Until May 2, check out *Imitation of
Life*http://drupal.westphillytools.org/sites/all/modules/civicrm/extern/url.php?u=2qid=574,
a selection of recent drawings at the Green Line Cafe on Locust from
Pennsylvania-born San Francisco-based artist Timothy Buckwalter. A portion
of the sale of each drawing will benefit the Tool Library.

The Walnut Hill Community Association and the West Philadelphia High School
Community Partners will host a meeting on Tuesday at 6:30 pm at the Enterprise
Center at 46th and Market Streets. The purpose of this meeting is for the
community to give feedback to be included in the school's Promise Academy
application.

Becoming a Promise Academy is one of three options available to West at this
point. It may be the option that best allows for keeping the things at West
that are working. In order to become a Promise Academy, the school must submit
an application stating what they do well and where they need help. Ms. Cruz
has asked for community feedback for the application. This meeting will be on
opportunity to give that feedback.
