[Bug 481832] Re: Verify written data button

2009-11-29 Thread David Balažic
Confirming.
After burning an iso image, there is no Verify option.

If you are referring to the check option that can be run separatelly, it
just reports, that is has no md5 data for this dic (or similar, I'm not
behind Ubuntu right now).

2009-11-27 Thread David Balažic
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: brasero

I blanked a DVD then tried to burn an ISO image to it.

it fails as brasero claims there is no space on it.

Steps:
 - inserted a recorded DVD+RW
 - right clicked its icon and selected Blank, left the fast blank option
enabled and blanked the DVD
 - in nautilus right clicked an ISO file and selected open with brasero
 - a dialog appears claiming there is no space on the blank DVD to write

[Bug 445867] [NEW] brasero progress bar resets itself several times during burning

2009-10-07 Thread David Balažic
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: brasero

progress bar starts, goes to end, start again, goes to end and for good
measure does it again. While burning an ISO image to DVD (and same with
CD).

brasero 2.26.1-0ubuntu1
ubuntu 9.04

So the issue is:
 - brasero shows I'm doing something and a progress bar
 - when the progress bar reaches 100% ...
 - brasero shows I'm doing something else and another, new progress bar
 - when this progress bar reaches 100% ...
 - brasero shows I'm doing yet something else and another, new progress bar
 - when this progress bar reaches 100% ...
 - repeat

Instead, it should show a progress bar, that starts at 0%, then
progresses towards 100%, and it reaches 100%, when the DVD burn is
actually finished. So it tells the user about ... progress. Not just
being there, because the GUI toolkit has a progress bar widget.

(this was originally reported as bug 399958, but got misunderstood for
some other issue)

[Bug 410085] [NEW] should not read image file just for checksum

2009-08-06 Thread David Balažic
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: brasero

Recently I burned a DVD-R from an ISO image file.
It was very slow.

The reason: brasero reads the input ISO file twice, once for the
checksum, then again for the actual burning.

In my case the file was heavily fragmented and the performance was very
poor (5 minutes to read the file instead of 1 minute when not
fragmented).

The fragmentation is a separate issue, but braseo could be optimized by reading
the file only once.
While burning, it could parallelly compute the checksum.

Or if that is hard to implement: Do not use checksum at all, but compare
the burned data to the input file. This way in case of verify error, the
exact point(s)/sectors(s) of mismatch can be identified.

Frankly, the current way of doing seems the wors possible (except if the
checksum is remembered, but reading other bugs suggests that it is not).

[Bug 399466] Re: Creating image checksum message not informative anough

2009-07-16 Thread David Balažic
I also noticed that Creating image checksum is printed twice. Once
before the burn and then after.

I guess first it is Calculating checksum of the image for later
verifying and then it is Reading recorded disc and calculating its
checksum to verifiy against image checksum.

[Bug 399469] Re: must eject dvd after burning iso

2009-07-16 Thread David Balažic
OK, now I did this:
 - insert the Win7 DVD
 - open its icon that appeared on desktop
 - check that window shows correct content
 - close window
 - check with 'df' in terminal that DVD is still mounted
 - start : brasero --brasero-media-debug --debug brasero-debug_try4.txt
 - in brasero click Butn Image
 - in dialog select source file : karmic-desktop-i386.iso
 - check in options that eject is not selected
 - burn
 - when finished, close burn dialog and close brasero
 - in system menu Places click UDF Volume (the remnant of the previous DVD
content)
 - two error dialogs appear:

Cannot mount volume.
Unable to mount the volume 'UDF Volume'.
Details: the bloody text can not be selected, even if people calimed that is
can..., I'll attach a screenshot

and the other dialog (small miracle, it can be navigated to by using
alt-tab) says:

Error
Unable to mount UDF Volume
DBus error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Message did not receive a reply
(timeout by message bus)

the brasero log is attached

[Bug 399469] Re: must eject dvd after burning iso

2009-07-16 Thread David Balažic
I also tried opening Places / Computer and the right clicking the DVD
icon (also labeled UDF Volume) and selecting Mount Volume. It is the
same: the DVD spins up, then the above error dialog appears.

So the Eject after burning option does not have any real use, as one
must eject the medium anyway (and reinsert it) to be able to use it.

[Bug 399469] Re: must eject dvd after burning iso

2009-07-16 Thread David Balažic
Another not: I opened the brasero burn dialog again, and saw that the free
space indication is wrong. It says 4.4GB free, but that can not be true. The
inserted DVD has the image of the karmic-desktop-i386.iso on it, which is 700
MB big.
So there is at most 4,5GB - 0,7 GB = 3,8 GB free on the DVD. Or 0 GB as I doubt
it makes sense to append one iso image after an existing on on the DVD medium.

It seems the cause of the problem is that the system still has out of
date data about the medium, from before the burning.

** Description changed:

  Ubuntu 9.04

  I just burned an ISO file (9.10 alpha2 x86) to a DVD+RW medium. I choose
- not to automatically eject it after butn.
+ not to automatically eject it after burn.

Expected: I can use/access the newly burnt DVD.

Actual result: Trying to open the DVD (double click in nautilus) gives

2009-07-15 Thread David Balažic
Hi!

Here I did the same, but started with a DVD video on the media and
overwrote it with Windows 7 CD.

Opening the media in nautilus results in correct content displayed,
except the label. It showed the label of the previous content (movie).

[Bug 300985] Re: when copying a DVD the speed multiple is reported as though it where a CD

2009-07-14 Thread David Balažic
Funny.

I just burned an iso file to a DVD+RW and here it is the opposite:
 - duringg burn, the speed is reported as a multiple of DVD ( KiB/s 4.1x)
 - when finished, it uses CD units : 5544 KiB/s (32.2x)

The iso file was karmic-desktop-i386.iso (alpha2).
The DVD medium was a FUJIFILM 4x DVD+RW, containing Windows 7 RC x86 (UDF
filesystem).

[Bug 399466] [NEW] Creating image checksum message not informative anough

2009-07-14 Thread David Balažic
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: brasero

brasero 2.26.1-0ubuntu1
Ubuntu 9.04

I burned an ISO file to a DVD+RW.

After burning there was a step labeled Creating image checksum.
This is not very clear (unless you are an experienced brasero user).

As I understand, it is reading back the disc content to verify the burn
was without errors.

The message should be changed to be more clear.

Users care what is done (verification), not how it is done (by
computing and comparing a checksum - I guess).

Verifying CD/DVD seems an obvious choice.
Or maybe Verifying recorded data correctness.
