Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] OT: I'm impressed

You know, part of this problem is motherboard and chipset manufacturers
and their sarcasmoh so reliable chipset driver packs/sarcasm? :)

True Windows should be able to deal with it better, but it isn't
completely MS's fault.

 and associated
drivers are often times buggy, especially when first released.
However, Linux doesn't appear to have the same problems in this space.
Where Linux does suffer is in that new hardware isn't necessarily
readily supported when first released, however, this is becoming
increasingly isolated.

2008-01-11 Thread hazzy

Hi Slimnick,

I tried MySQL 5.0.45 and that seemed to fix the problem I was having. I
wonder what's up with 5.0.32.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] OT: I'm impressed

2008-01-11 Thread bobkoure

The windows issue is the HAL (hardware adaptation layer). In earlier
versions of NT, you could swap hardware, stick your NT CD in, boot to
that CD, run repair and that would replace your old HAL with the
right one.
This went to sometimes worked in Win2K, and they seem to have
completely disabled it in XP/2K3.

I was an NT driver developer at one point and got to see this stuff up
close and personal.

The driver and HAL architecture is actually not bad - but the fact that
they just abandoned efforts to make the HAL reloadable is, indeed, an
example of what's wrong with closed source software...

The problem windows has here is that it doesn't have the drivers on
disk.
In Ubuntu Linux every possible driver there is is compiled as a module
so that it is loaded if the corresponding hardware is being found.
This way of building a kernel gives slightly more overhead and a bit
bigger kernel but it runs on almost everything

[SlimDevices: Unix] slimbox: wireless encryption failure

2008-01-11 Thread monroeja

Hello all,

I recently made some slight changes to my router. My slimbox was
recognized just fine with my original encryption setup:

- WPA-PSK
- TKIP

I switched my encryption to AES and I started getting a:

Problem: Wireless Encryption Failure

message on the slimbox so I reverted back to my original TKIP setting,
but now I get the exact same error message after numerous attempts to
have it recognized. Emmm?

Any help would be most appreciated.

[SlimDevices: Unix] Package in Debian's/Ubuntu's repos

2008-01-11 Thread rmjb

Hello, I use slimserver for MClient and always found it a bit clunky but
see many people sing it's praises. Looking at the Server Settings in the
interface I see it can do a lot, but quite a bit never really work out
correctly for me. Two examples are the rendevouz support and the
transcoding of wma files.

I finally decided to look at the README files in
/usr/share/doc/slimserver and see that for the Debian package some
things in slimserver were removed for copyright and other non-free
reasons. Is there a guide on re-enabling what's missing for this
package?

I know that there is a deb available on this site but I like to stick
to the official ubuntu repository for straightforward upgrades to new
distro releases.

Thanks in advance,
- rmjb

There isn't a repository with SqueezeCenter in it, is there? I was just
expecting to install the debian package, but I'm a linux semi-novice so
maybe that's very much the -wrong- approach...(?)

AFAIK, there's no Ubuntu repo for slimserver. The reliable repo is the
debian.slimdevices.com one.

I'd be interested to look at the README you mention, but can't find it.
The only things in my /usr/share/doc/slimserver are seven Changelogs, a
couple of .gz files and a copyright notice.

The only READMEs I can locate are the following, and are clearly not
what you're seeing:

/usr/share/slimserver/MySQL/README
/usr/share/slimserver/lib/README
/usr/share/slimserver/HTML/README.txt

I run SC 6.5.3 on Feisty. Do you have a different set up (e.g. SC7)?

The only time I've had this kind of problem is when I've made a slight
error when entering the passkey. May be worth testing by turning the
encryption off completely and trying to connect?

Unfortunately, Linux doesn't yet IMHO have credible alternatives in

I recently discovered that mp3tag runs extremely well under Wine on my

on my WinXP box more or less ever now! :-)
