[UPHPU] No UPHPU April 2022 - Looking for Speakers May and Beyond

2022-04-19 Thread Mark Niebergall
Utah PHP Users,

We were unable to line up a speaker for this month, April 2022. The meetup
has been canceled for the month.

We are hoping to schedule users for the next several months. Please respond
back to this email, or message Mark Niebergall or Derek Caswell if you are
interested. This is a great environment to share your experience,
knowledge, or cool things you have learned with others. Topics can be
anything related to PHP development - from soft skills, technical talks, or
related technologies. Attending the meetups is great for networking, career
development and advancement, and staying current with the latest in the PHP
community.

See you in May!

[UPHPU] UPHPU Tomorrow - PHP TestFest 2017 with Pizza

2017-09-20 Thread Mark Niebergall
UPHPUers,

Our PHP TestFest 2017 event is TOMORROW, Thursday, September 21, at 7pm,
and there will be pizza provided by Alex Clark with TEKsystems. We are
participating in a world-wide community event to add tests to PHP core by
writing tests in PHP for PHP functionality.

To be prepared, please watch these 6 instructional videos produced by Sammy
Powers on how to set up and write the tests. They can be found online at
https://phptestfest.org/tutorials/writing-tests-for-php-source/. Ideally
come ready to start writing tests by having PHP source cloned and the
ability to run tests, which is videos 1 and 2. Please bring a laptop to
work on and a power cord. Even if you are unable to watch all the videos
and do the setup, still please join us and you can do some pair programming!

As part of my preparation, I built a new very basic Ubuntu VM using
https://puphpet.com/ (doesn't even need PHP) and then followed Sammy's
videos running the commands. The abbreviated commands version to go from
that bare VM to running PHP tests is (after extracting zip from puphpet, cd
into that directory, and make sure to have vagrant and virtualbox
installed):

---
vagrant up
vagrant ssh
sudo apt-get update

cd /var/www/html
git clone https://github.com/php/php-src.git
cd php-src

sudo apt-get install autoconf -y
./buildconf

sudo apt-get install libxml2-dev -y
sudo apt-get install valgrind -y
./configure --enable-maintainer-zts --enable-debug --enable-cli-sapi
make
sapi/cli/php run-tests.php -P tests/basic/001.phpt
---

Please feel free to email me or message me on utos.slack.com with any and
all setup questions.

We are all in this together, learning and participating. Please join us
whether you are new to PHP, have some experience, or have even already
written tests for PHP core. There are prizes for user groups and individual
prizes to be won as well, just be sure to include a '--CREDIT--' with your
name and UPHPU (similar to this PR https://github.com/php/php-src/commit/
141f26e9a9b6633a317742d1c0696b2cfdd8c1cf) and reference UPHPU on the PR.

I'm forwarding this message on - details about the PHP Unicorn conference
and a discount code.

---

Hi Everyone,

As you may or may not have heard, there is a new PHP Conference happening
next Thursday, May 4, called PHP Unicorn.

This is an online conference which will be streaming live, so you can watch
from the comfort of your office, home or anyplace else you may be. Even if
you can’t watch live, your ticket also gives you access to view the
recordings any time you like.

If you’ve been to a conference before you know they are an excellent place
to learn new techniques and get a sense of what other people are doing with
PHP.

There is a pretty impressive lineup of speakers and tickets are just $100
USD.

In addition, the organizers of the conference have extended a 20% discount
to our members. To get the discount, simply go to the registration page at
https://www.crowdcast.io/e/php-unicorn-conference/register <

[UPHPU] UPHPU Great meetup last night, Upcoming meetups, Conferences, and Call for Papers

2017-02-17 Thread Mark Niebergall
UPHPUers,

We had a great turnout and some good discussions regarding security last
night, thanks for all those who were able to attend! Slides from the
presentation are posted at:

https://www.slideshare.net/MarkNiebergall/security-php

Upcoming UPHPU meetups:

March 16: H Hatfield
April 20: Levi Morrison
May 18: Kyle Waters
June 15: Looking for a speaker, probably an OpenWest preview talk
July 20: TBD (OpenWest is the week before)

OpenWest is July 12-15 this year at the South Towne Expo Center in Sandy.
The CFP is open now at https://cfp.openwest.org/ please submit! Speaking at
OpenWest is a great way to share your knowledge, get a foot into conference
speaking, learn more about a topic, and get involved in the community. Plus
you get into the conference for free and have a great excuse to attend!

Now is a great time to plan out upcoming conference attendance for the
year. OpenWest is here in Utah in July and great to attend or speak at for
everyone local. If traveling is an option, consider Lonestar PHP in April
in Dallas, php[tek] in Atlanta in May, ZendCon in October in Las Vegas, and
a handful of other great PHP conferences. You can get all the latest
conference details at http://www.php.net/conferences/.

[UPHPU] Meetup December 15 7pm; Looking for Sponsors and Speakers; Meetup.com group

2016-12-06 Thread Mark Niebergall
UPHPUers,

Our November meetup was a blast with Stephen Godfrey - thanks for a very
useful and enlightening presentation last month!

Our next meetup is *Thursday, December 15, at 7pm* at Vivint in Lehi, Utah.
Travis Barney, a master of UI development, will be discussing "CSS Magic",
something all developers need to know how to do at some point. You can find
the talk abstract, speaker bio, venue information, and swag alerts at
https://www.meetup.com/Utah-PHP-User-Group/events/234447192/. Please come
join us for the last meetup of the year!

We are always *looking for sponsors*! If you would like to have your
company sponsor a meeting please let me know. We would love to have food
and prizes so please ask if your company can sponsor our meetup. It is a
great way for companies to build connections with local developers, find
new hires, and be recognized by the local PHP community.

We are *in need of speakers* for pretty much all of next year. I will
present in January so from February on there are openings. Please email
back or come talk with me at the next meetup if you are interested. Topics
can be anything related to PHP, from soft skills, PHP frameworks,
architecture, security, databases, design principles, APIs, testing, best
practices, tools, and more. Presenting at UPHPU is a great way to learn
more about a topic you love, build your presentation skills, fill out your
resume, and get a foot into speaking at conferences.

[UPHPU] Reminder: UPHPU Meetup TOMORROW Thurs Nov 17 7pm in Lehi

2016-11-16 Thread Mark Niebergall
UPHPU Members,

Please join us at our meetup TOMORROW, *Thursday, November 17, at 7pm*, at
Vivint in Lehi, Utah.

https://www.meetup.com/Utah-PHP-User-Group/events/234447178/

This is going to be a great talk for any developer, PHP or other languages,
about pitching and charging for freelance work. Whether you've attended
meetups recently, or you've been thinking about attending UPHPU meetups in
the past but haven't, or perhaps you used to attend but haven't for a
while, please come!

*Talk: Freelancing and Money: How to Pitch, How to Charge, And Make More
Money*

Money is one of the primary reasons for freelancing, but most of us are
doing it wrong. As a result, we lose out on some of the things that money
can buy. Some of these are freedom, security, and peace of mind. So let’s
fix that. In this seminar, we’ll cover some key lessons that will change
the way you look at side projects and freelance gigs.

Specifically, we’ll cover:

   - Why time has little correlation with value (and the Wizard of
   Schenectady).

   - The different ways of billing (hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, fixed,
   and value).

   - Proposing different options, and giving customers reasons to pay you
   more.

   - Finding out the value of a project by using NDA’s.

   - What other people are charging (an interactive group activity), and
why that doesn’t have to matter.

   - Becoming a top-tier consultant and beyond.

   - The mind-shifts that will get you there.

   - Any random questions you might have.

And as you implement these lessons a number of things will happen: You’ll
make more on projects. You’ll be able to work less. You’ll have more time
to spend with your family to do the things that you want to do. Most of
all, you’ll become more than just a developer. You’ll become a high-end
consultant who just happens to use a computer to solve business problems.
And though it’s just a label, it’s an important label that comes with a
high price-tag.

*Presenter: Stephen Godfrey*

Stephen Godfrey is full-time freelancer who runs Mountain Fresh Media. He
specializes in full-stack development (PHP), and making wickedly fast
websites. He recently bought Freelancecollege.com, and is in the process of
turning it into a hub for teaching college students how to freelance. He
blogs on the side, writes novels, and loves to fix things up around the
house. He’s happily married, has two kids, 11 chickens, and a half-acre
homestead. Life for him is simply good.

*Swag Alert*

At the end of the presentation, one random lucky winner will win a free 1
year individual subscription to any single JetBrains Toolbox product.
Choices includes PhpStorm, WebStorm, DataGrip, or others seen at
https://www.jetbrains.com/products.html. Thanks JetBrains!

*Venue*

Vivint
3401 Ashton Blvd
Lehi, Utah 84043

*How to get there*

The address is 3401 Ashton Blvd, though some mapping tools put that a
little far down the street (if so, try 2719 Ashton Blvd instead). It's the
first office building south of the intersection, nearest to the Dickeys BBQ
on the corner.

Just come in the front door and we'll be on the first floor, to the right.

The front door will be locked, but there's a guard on duty right inside
that can let folks in, and we're really close to the front door, so we
should be able to help people get in pretty easily.

If you can't get in, call 801-391-8249 and we'll get you in!

*The After Party*

We will be going to JCW's for the After Party. Come check it out with us.

Looking forward to seeing everyone on Thursday, November 17, at 7pm!

*December Meetup*

In December we will be having Travis talking about "CSS Magic".

*Looking for Speakers*

We are always looking for speakers for UPHPU meetups. Please reply back if

[UPHPU] UPHPU Meetup Thurs November 17 7pm at Vivint in Lehi

2016-11-01 Thread Mark Niebergall
UPHPU Members,

Happy November!

Last month we had a great meetup presented by Patricia Witt on how to get
promoted and career development. Thanks Patricia for a great presentation
and to all those who attended!

Our next meetup is *Thursday, November 17, at 7pm*, at Vivint in Lehi, Utah.

Thanks,

Mark Niebergall

2016-09-15 Thread Mark Niebergall
*Reminder: Meetup is TONIGHT, Thursday, September 15, 2016, at 7pm at

This is a great presentation for all levels of PHP users to hit the basics
on PHP data types and learn something new.

http://uphpu.org/meeting/2016/september-meeting/

*Data Types in PHP by Mark Niebergall*

Correctly understanding the eight data types in PHP is essential to a solid
foundation in development. Come refresh your knowledge of the scalar types,
compound types, and special data types used in PHP, and learn about proper
usage of each. Review type juggling, learn some common data type traps to
avoid, and how to code defensively to prevent having the data type of a
variable change unexpectedly. Finally learn how unit tests can help verify
that code is handling data types correctly.

*Swag Alert*

A free 1 year personal license to any JetBrains product will be given away
to one randomly selected attendee at the end of the presentation. Must be
present to win!

[UPHPU] Looking for Speakers - Sept, Oct, Nov

2016-08-24 Thread Mark Niebergall
Hey Everyone,

I'm looking for speakers for the upcoming UPHPU meetups in September,
October, and November. Please email me at mbnieberg...@gmail.com if you
would like to speak.

Speaking at UPHPU is a great opportunity to sharpen your skills, share
something you have learned, and get involved in the local PHP community.
Also, many conferences look for speakers with previous speaking experience,
so speaking at the local user group is a great way to increase your chances
of speaking at a conference. Presenting can also be added to your resume
to help you stand out from other candidates when you are looking for a job,
plus gives you networking opportunities with developers at other PHP shops
in the area. If you've considered speaking in the past but haven't done so
we would love to hear from you!

Meetups are held the 3rd Thursday of each month at 7pm at Vivint in Lehi:

Thursday, September 15
Thursday, October 20 (may change to October 13 due to UEA)
Thursday, November 17

Please email me if you are interested in speaking at an upcoming UPHPU
meetup.

Thanks,

[UPHPU] Reminder: THIS THURSDAY Aug 18 UPHPU at 7pm - ORM and APIs by Tom Anderson plus Swag

2016-08-16 Thread Mark Niebergall
UPHPU for August is THIS Thursday, August 18, at 7pm at Vivint in Lehi we
will be having Tom Anderson present:

http://uphpu.org/meeting/2016/august-meeting/

New this month one lucky random attendee will win a 1 year license to any
JetBrains product. See below for details.

*Object Relational Mapping and it's place in APIs*

Object Relational Mapping has proven superior to SQL query based
applications. Advantages include building your database from the ORM
metadata and the ability to traverse the database using objects. An
overview of why ORM is better then specific aspects of ORM such as the
Query Builder will give the attendee a realistic understanding of the
technology.

Tom is Zend Certified PHP and a certified Zend Framework 2 Engineer. He has
worked in PHP since 1999 and began programming on the Commodore 128. Tom is
an open source contributor. Among his open source contributions Tom has
contributed heavily to the Apigility project by Zend.

[UPHPU] UPHPU Reminder: TOMORROW Thurs July 21 7pm Vivint - Mob Programming

2016-07-20 Thread Mark Niebergall
Reminder: TOMORROW Thursday, July 21, at 7pm at Vivint in Lehi we will have
H Hatfield presenting on Mob Programming:

http://uphpu.org/meeting/2016/july-meeting/

Intro to Mob Programming

If you feel like your team could be more efficient in getting work
delivered and out the door, take a look at Mob Programming. Woody Zuill
coined the term Mob Programming as "a software development approach where
the whole team works on the same thing, at the same time, in the same
space, and at the same computer.” We’ll talk about the principles and
techniques used in Mob Programming and how to get started with your team.
We’ll also do a short hands-on example to help you get a feel for if you’d
like to try it with your team.

H Hatfield has been programming in PHP since it was Personal Home Page and
almost remembers which order needle and haystack are in. He is currently a
Senior Developer for Rain Retail building a SaaS Point-of-Sale system. When
he isn’t working, he likes playing board games, studying software
craftsmanship and playing with his wife and 3yr old twins.

Venue:
