Here's what I ended up with , with the extra php file (one for the rss, one
to clean up the html a bit [that file was 13 lines long]). Total lines =
20 lines.

on mouseUp
set the itemDelimiter to br /
   put URL http://mydomain.com/cleanHTML.php; into tURL
   put tURL into fld fld4
replace br / with return in fld fld4
put any line of fld fld4 into fld fld3
end mouseUp

Here's with just the original php file for the rss. No extra php file and
only 12 lines of LC.

on mouseUp
put URL http://mydomain.com/rss.php; into fld fld1
put text of fld fld1 into tText
replace CR with space in tText
replace quote with space in tText
   replace https://www.mydomain.com/show.php?l=0p=0056i=; with

replace space with CR in tText

put tText into fld fld4 -- should be a list of URLs

   repeat

 if it 0 then
put the number of words in char 1 to (it + tSkip) of tText into

And you can always be certain you are using the most recent version of the

So your splash stack can actually check the version in the table where you
store the most recent version, (if you have a version number column)
compare it with your existing version, and then replace the substacks in
your app with the most current ones.

This is all theoretical, you understand, but no reason why it would not
work. You may have to encode the binary data first for transport over
 internet routers.

One person moved to another computer (and consequently another network)

Once, my client was getting the same 400 error all morning and then that

This definitely seems network-related to me but I don't know what it could
be. The queries are reaching AWS and it is returning the error. We don't
have access (or don't know how) to see the server logs that Amazon has; we
only have access to the logs on our own server, and the requests never get
 that far.

 Any ideas?

either with get shell(start MyProgram.exe) or with the launch command
 e.g. launch MyProgram.exe

where MyProgram.exe is the program you downloaded and want to start.

Re: file checksums

2014-04-22 Thread Shawn Blc
I'm guessing that most people that download files have no idea about MD5
and checksums let alone know how to verify the integrity of the download.
Besides the geeks around here (LiveCode geeks are awesome), could your
neighbor verify the following? Probably not.

 9cfec5c23c16e1fbd1a1d4bffb0e6ab2 vs 9e107d9d372bb6826bd81d3542a419d6 vs
 ec96823c9795fb3cfa1bbad6c99ed8fe

So while MD5 provides a way to verify the integrity of a file for the
honest and geeky, it does nothing to protect your average computer user
from those trying to highjack their banking and credit card information.
See my example above, just because there's a hashtag doesn't make it a
legit download.

something out that is NOT documented in the dictionary. A recent example:
I had trouble with the cursor disappearing once I compiled. Happily,

to the dictionary and make my OWN note about that under cursor - since I
don't have a photographic memory and because LC for me is a hobby and not a

 difficult to remember everything.

Sure, I could make a spreadsheet with cursor in column 1 and my notes
in column 2 - whatever. But that seems like a pretty dopey solution.

I hope some of you will agree with me that this feature would be VERY
useful and a great timesaver. Then let's rattle the LC cage.

 Thanks for listening.

According to Kevin:

*Surprises to come?*

All these statistics are particularly impressive when you consider the many
years it took to build up our user base prior to going open source. Also,
while we've started to deliver on our next-generation project goals, we
still have plenty of amazing new technology in the pipeline. We have some
new partnerships with strong potential in the pipeline too. And we even
have perhaps a few surprises in store for you all. Suffice to say, we may
have momentum now, but I believe the best is yet to come!

As we pass this milestone I want to take this opportunity to thank each and
every one of you for your support. Without your help none of this would
have been possible. We are here to serve you, our loyal community. We have
our foot firmly on the accelerator. We intend to hire, expand and push even

 want to move on.

If RR continue to supply LC6.6 with support for Mac OS X 10.5 then I don't
see where the issue is. If a dev want's to support older versions to keep
his/her clients happy, then they are the ones that need to put in the extra
effort and charge accordingly, not the rest of us that don't want or need
 it.

As far as schools are concerned, I taught Photoshop in schools for 7 years
and they refused to upgrade from PS Elements 2 with their reasoning based
purely on cost, even at education prices, so I'm sure most of them will be
happy to run LC 6.6 until such time as they can upgrade their ageing
equipment, it must happen eventually. If they can't/won't run newer
hardware how can they expect to run the most up-to-date software,
especially when they will be getting if free?

I haven't seen any demand for PPC/Universal support, even though I did
offer it to my clients, nobody ever requested it. That puts demand
according to my experience at below 0.05%.

Looking forward to a faster, leaner and more modern LiveCode.

Re: existing Double-opt in subscription solution with livecode-server?

2013-06-03 Thread Shawn Blc
Mark, the double opt-in feature is when the subscriber also receives a link
to his/her email address that must be clicked. Typically the link will
expire in 7 days. Once the link is clicked they have opted-in to receive
your list, etc. If the link isn't clicked and expires the user is never
confirmed.

 Hi Matthias,

What's a double opt-in feature? I have made several subscription forms,
mailing lists and news letter systems, sometimes using MySQL, sometimes
local text files. Can you be more specific? I guess you're going to need a
database. I use PHP and not LC Server.

 Shawn,
you have a couple of issues here ...

 1. (minor)
if this is the entire script, then tCount is a local (i.e. handler
local) variable, so it is re-created each time the handler is called, so
you finish up with the same value each time. I think you ant to make it a
script-local variable (i.e. declare it outside any handler) and then it
retains its value from one call to the next. (I'm also paranoid, so I added
 a check for it not being a number). And since it's a script-local, I
 renamed it to sCount :-)

 2. in line 3, you have an extra keyword URL You have

*put* URL (www.google.com?count= tCount) into pURL

and you need to simply have

*put* (www.google.com?count= tCount) into pURL

We are just trying to build up the string of the URL - what you had was
 trying to fetch it.

 3. (trivial) I renamed pURL to tURL just to follow convention - it's a
local variable, not a parameter :-)

I changed those - and a couple of other things for my testing, and got the
following script which seems to work OK; fails with invalid host address
 when wifi is switched off.

 local sCount
 on mouseUp
if sCount is not a number then
   put 1 into sCount
else
   add 1 to sCount
end if
put (http://www.google.com/?**count= http://www.google.com/?count=
  sCount) into tURL
put the millisecs tURL CR the Result CRCR after field F --
 just for testing
get URL tURL
if the result is empty then
put the millisecs success CR after field F
else
put the millisecs the result CR after field F
end if
 end mouseUp

+1. Awesome story, lol.

On Wed, May 8, 2013 at 11:08 AM, Peter Haworth p...@lcsql.com wrote:

My friend and ex bandmate David Brewer is a bagpiper and told me this
 story.

As a bagpiper, I play many gigs. Recently I was asked by a funeral
director to play at a graveside service for a homeless man. He had no
family or friends, so the service was to be at a pauper's cemetery out in
 the wilds of California.

As I was not familiar with the backwoods, I got lost; and being a
typical man I didn't stop for directions. I finally arrived an hour late
and saw the funeral guy had evidently gone and the hearse was nowhere in
sight. There were only the diggers and crew left and they were eating
 lunch.
I felt badly and apologized to the men for being late.

I went to the side of the grave and looked down and the vault lid was
already in place. I didn't know what else to do, so I started to play.
The workers put down their lunches and began to gather around. I played
out my heart and soul for this man with no family and friends. I played
like I've never played before for this homeless man.
And as I played 'Amazing Grace,' the workers began to weep.
They wept, I wept, and we all wept together.

When I finished I packed up my bagpipes and started for my car. Though
my head hung low, my heart was full.

As I was opening the door to my car, I heard one of the worker say,
Sweet Mother of Jesus, I never seen nothing like that before and I've
been putting in septic tanks for twenty years.

Craig, thank you. That's what I'm talking about. Much easier than I was

Thank you for the easy explanation.

Not sure what you are asking, but try this in a blank card:

Put a bunch of buttons all over the card. Group them all. Give that group

Now, with the pointer tool, select the group, and make the group much
smaller by dragging, say, the bottom right handle up and to the left. Now
select the browse tool, and scroll around the group, showing the various
buttons that were cut off when you resized.

Is this what you were getting at?

I have a card with many labels, text fields and radio buttons. In order
for this to be seen and eventually printed I'd like to be able to have
users scroll and answer the questions.

I've tried the scroll field, and adding a group but can't get it working.

Can someone explain scroll view and how I'd go about accomplishing the
 above?

In my property profiles I have the group enabled, select grouped controls,

Any ideas on what could cause a radio button not to hilite when clicked?

Can someone explain scroll view to newb

2013-05-06 Thread Shawn Blc
I have a card with many labels, text fields and radio buttons. In order
for this to be seen and eventually printed I'd like to be able to have
users scroll and answer the questions.

I've tried the scroll field, and adding a group but can't get it working.

Can someone explain scroll view and how I'd go about accomplishing the

It seems that grpA1 and correctAnswer are local variables - ie., local

 Is that it?

 I must be missing something:

On Linux (and I cannot quite see why this feature should differ
 cross-platform)
I created a stack containing one field DTEXT

and one button BUTTON containing the following script:

 on mouseUp
put my knees are so hairy they have to be shaved thrice daily into
 fld DTEXT
 end mouseUp

and, on clicking on the button, everything worked just as it should:

the text wrapped without any problems

 --

So, I thought I would try something vaguely like what you are doing, by
changing the button script to this:

 on mouseUp
put empty into fld DTEXT
put my knees are so hairy they have to be shaved thrice daily into g01
put g01 into fld DTEXT wrap text
 end mouseUp

and, on clicking the button I got an error message; button Button:
execution error at line 4 (Handler: can't find handler) near wrap, char 21

mainly because writing 'wrap text' directly after 'put g01 into fld
 DTEXT ' is complete rubbish,

and I really wonder why you didn't get the same error message.

 --**---

 And, so to this:

 on mouseUp
put empty into fld DTEXT
put my knees are so hairy they have to be shaved thrice daily into g01
put g01 into fld DTEXT
 end mouseUp

 and that worked 100%

 --**--

 things worth considering:

 1. make sure the don't wrap is deselected in the prefs palette for your
 textField

and if that doesn't serve your purposes (why ever not?) you could do this:

 on mouseUp
set the dontWrap of fld DTEXT to true
put empty into fld DTEXT
put my knees are so hairy they have to be shaved thrice daily into g01
put g01 into fld DTEXT
set the dontWrap of fld DTEXT to false
 end mouseUp

which SHOULD tell ALL of us Happy Livecoders that the true/false of
 'dontWrap' is the

wrong way round !!! LOL !!!

 Best of luck, Richmond.

Re: Is there a way to wrap text in a text entry field?

Craig,

My questions are in a text input field, words are average size words. This
still has me confused. I can stretch the text input field to fit the
question, but it's a pain, because I'm also calling these questions on the
last page (where I'm checking the answers). It'd be helpful if the field
would stretch to fit the question (wrap).

In a single line, if there is not at least one space before you reach the

There is a workaround for this, if you verify that is where your issue

 Shawn,

Data Grids are made for things like this. They're very powerful, and there
is a bit of a learning curve. Fortunately there are some nice online
 lessons on Data Grids here:

What you want is a DG Form (as opposed to a table.)

Re: Question: Scrollable area with multiple choice questions using radio buttons

2013-04-24 Thread Shawn Blc
Thanks Devin and Craig. I'm new to coding, have had a commercial license
of LC since June 2012, and plopped down a couple of fist fulls during KS.
Just the day job, which has absolutely nothing to do with coding, tends to
get in the way ... 110 hours a week, 7 days at a time. I'm finally
getting my butt in gear and learning LC.

I'll give both options a go.

Right now though I have one question per card, radio buttons with the
answers (multiple choice). On the final page I grade the quiz and have a
review of the questions, correct answer and student answer. This is the
area that I'd like scrollable, as to not have to go to another card. I
could then print the results from that one page.

Hope that's a little more clear.

Devin is suggesting dataGrid forms because I think he assumed that you
want the buttons to move lockstep with the scroll. You can assign a radio
button to each line in that object, and the scrolling is managed
 internally. A packaged solution.

You could certainly manage a group of radio buttons that tracked the
scroll of a field, and that would be a great learning project. Much to
handle, but all at the novice level. DataGrids have all that built-in, but
they are complex, and you would learn much less, even after you got it
 running the way you want.

 Do both.

Devin, so using text fields isn't an option huh? I'll check out DGs.

With some help I can fill up a card, but since I have several more

Any input will help this newbie greatly. Thanks.

  Shawn,

Data Grids are made for things like this. They're very powerful, and
 there
is a bit of a learning curve. Fortunately there are some nice online
  lessons on Data Grids here:

What you want is a DG Form (as opposed to a table.)

 Shawn,

It sounds like what you want is to resize the field to show all of the
text. Have you tried the formattedHeight property, which works in
 conjunction with dontWrap?

set the dontWrap of fld myFld to true
 put whoppingHugeString into fld myFld
put the topLeft of fld myFld into tAnchorPt
set the height of fld myFld to the formattedHeight of fld myFld
set the topLeft of fld myFld to tAnchorPt

2013-04-24 Thread Shawn Blc
That's exactly what I was talking about, perhaps not making myself clear
enough though. Thank you.

Sure, using text fields is always an option. It might require a little
setup and scripting. Data Grids are actually groups composed of many
objects and scripting that takes care of the housekeeping for you. They are
very powerful and for some uses can be overkill for what you might need.

If all you want to do is to scroll through a group of fields and radio
buttons it's not terribly difficult to do, especially if you know in
advance exactly how many questions you will have. Try this:

Create several fields, one for each quiz question.

Align them top to bottom in a column, with left edges aligned.

Select all of the fields and group them.

Resize the group to so that the bottom few fields are not visible. Now go
to the group's Size and Position pane in the property inspector and lock
 the group's size.

Go back to the Basic pane and turn on the vertical scrollbar for the group.

Now you have a group of fields that you can scroll through. I think you'll
see how easy it would be to also add radio buttons to this group, one set
per field. In this case you'd want to first create groups of a question
field and radio style answer buttons, group each question set, then clone
the group to create other questions. Finally, group the question groups
into a larger group that you can scroll as described above.

I hope I'm not being either too basic or assuming too much about how much
you know about LiveCode. Anyway, give it a try.
