Re: Anyone any experience with Livecode under Ventura?

2022-12-24 Thread Simon Knight via use-livecode
Hi Matthias,

Thank you for your offer.

I've conducted some more testing and it seems that the issue I am seeing may
not be isolated to just Ventura. Unfortunately not having a copy makes it
difficult to report on what is occuring, so I will just describe what I see in
Livecode 9.6.8 running on Big Sur.

Before starting I remove Livecode from both Contacts and Calendar in the
Privacy Pane using two calls to tccutils. With the library file installed and
my stack file open in livecode I make the request for Calendar data. The
system should present two dialog boxes requesting permission to access first
Contacts then Calendar. When run in the IDE only one gets presented followed
by a second stating that access to Calendar data is denied. This should mean
that Livecode is listed in the Privacy Pane but it is not. This issue may be
slightly different to what was being reported to me about Ventura.

I have raised a rambling bug report
https://quality.livecode.com/show_bug.cgi?id=24054
 and all the files are
attached to this report. For tests in the IDE I suggest the version of the
stack dated 24th dec 2022 and version 1.1.54 of the library. The built
versions use a slightly earlier version of the stack file but the differences
are minor.

Link to the form thread : https://forums.livecode.com/viewtopic.php?f=9=37540
  beware that the URLs
to Dropbox do work but Dropbox mangles the zips. It is better to get the files
via the bug report.

Richmond62 is using : ProductName: macOS, ProductVersion: 13.2,

Stam is using : ProductName: macOS, ProductVersion: 13.0.1, BuildVersion: 22A400

Details from a log file that Richmond62 and Stam reported in the Forum thread.
If I understand what Richmond has written in the thread Livecode was listed in
the Privacy Pane and was enabled but my library reported "denied". Stam's
Livecode is not listed and never requests access.

Hi Simon,

do you have a sample stack i could test for you here? To be honest, i have no
clue how to access the contacts or the calendar. So a sample stack would be
fine.

Re: Anyone any experience with Livecode under Ventura?

2022-11-14 Thread Mike Kerner via use-livecode
just one note that has bitten me, about using these cloud backup services:
they are not great at storing databases (which includes git repos, since
the git tree is just a db).
there are db's that take snapshots as part of their backup process (then
you backup the snapshot, not the db). backing up a db via cloud storage
(again, including a git repo) will eventually burn you. you can fix it, but
it can take hours.
but with time machine/retrospect/etc. - no issues.

Re: Anyone any experience with Livecode under Ventura?

2022-11-13 Thread matthias rebbe via use-livecode
As Jacque has written, but

in Ventura you can decide if the backup shall be done only manually, every
hour, every day or every week.

And if you have defined more than one drive for the Time Machine backups and
if you have them all connected at the same time to your computer then the first
backup is done first on the first one, then the next backup on the second one
and so on and then again on the first drive.

If you have defined more than one drive for the backup, but you only attach one
drive at a time, then the backup is written to that drive. If you attach an
other of the defined drives and remove the other one, then the backup is
written the newly attached drive.

I for example have always 1 "real" drive attached and i also use my Synology
NAS as a second drive for the Time Machine backups.

Matthias

Re: Anyone any experience with Livecode under Ventura?

2022-11-13 Thread J. Landman Gay via use-livecode
There is no scheduling, it's all automatic. Time Machine backs up once an
hour, then combines the back ups once a day, then once a week, then once a
month. When the disk is full it deletes the oldest to make room. With a
multi-terrabyte drive that doesn't happen often.

It alternates each backup every hour between my two drives. You can add any
number of drives and it will rotate every hour among them.

The UI combines all the backups into a single visual report so you don't
need to figure out which drive stores it. If you don't like the visual
display you can use the Finder and grab any backup from there. For
convenience, TM creates an alias to the most recent backup on each drive.

Brilliant. I’m inspired. (I presume you can program Time Machine to use drive A
on Mon, Wed, Fri, drive B on Tues, Thurs, Sat kind of thing?).

I do both local and cloud backups. If you haven't set up Time Machine I highly recommend it. I
have two backup drives on my Mac and Time Machine alternates backups between them. I never have
to think about it, and it's saved me more times than I can count, especially when I save a
stack and later find out I introduced problems. I just grab the last working copy and get back
to work. When I travel, I put one of the drives in a safe place at home and take the other one
with me, just in case. That came in handy once when I had to review a script to answer a
client's question while I was out of town. SSD drives are just a little larger than a cigarette
pack, inexpensive, and easy to carry.

I also have Google Drive set up to automatically backup a few important folders including my
client folder. That way I have essentially three backups of the important stuff. The good part
is that I don't have to do anything at all, the copies take care of themselves.

The initial setup happened a couple of decades ago when I lost everything. My Mac's hard drive
failed suddenly and my entire digital life went with it. I'm obsessive now. It's entirely
possible to be lazy about backups and still have them.

BTW, one or the other backup drives has failed a couple of times over the years. I take the
dead one offline and Time Machine will continue to backup to the other one until I can get a
replacement. This happens about every 3-5 years.

I haven't lost any data since the original catastrophe.

Don't get me wrong, I keep some of my documents in the cloud, especially the

I tend towards lazy myself, backing up only after the umpteenth prompt from
Time machine that I haven’t backed up in XX months. But I am also the anxious
type so if I am working on something important (like a paper, a presentation or
a program) I’ll just periodically mail myself a copy. That way, if I lose a
disk, I can just retrieve copies from whatever mail server I am using.

I have on occasion had to do just that, particularly after I retired and failed
to backup everything properly before I left my employer.

LiveCode apparently can't find the invisible folder, so e.g. it defaulted

Just to flag a different experience here. I can’t get the simulator to launch
under Ventura on a Macbook Air M1.

I have Xcode 13.2 installed and have “xcode-select” set to it. The preferences
for mobile development are set correctly and when I try to launch a mobile app
for testing on the simulator it gets stuck in the “launching app” dialog
forever.

And yes, I tried launching the simulator manually by going inside the bundle
and the simulator is working fine.

I just upgraded to Ventura and noticed that only Xcode 14 can be opened on
Ventura.

As LC 9.6.9 needs Xcode 13.2 on macOS 11 and above you can still use Xcode 13.2
 in LC.
Just add the "old" Xcode 13.2 app in LC preferences under Mobile Support

and also change the path of the active developer directory back to Xcode 13.2
by running this command in Terminal

sudo xcode-select -s

LC 9.6.9 (rc1) and LC 10.0.0. (dp4) works fine with me on Ventura.

I had Xcode 13.2.1 installed but that version does not work anymore.
I wonder which Xcode version I need now.
Which Xcode version works with LC now?

Re: Anyone any experience with Livecode under Ventura?

2022-10-25 Thread Richmond Mathewson via use-livecode
I have been using 9.6.3 and 8.1.10 through all the beta versions of Mac OS
13, and there was a minor blip 3 betas back, and I sent a report about it
to Apple.

Since then, as far as I can tell, both of those versions work like a charm.

If you have the resources, just do a Time Machine backup so you can recover if
needed. I did an upgrade recently on my home iMac, and it completely borked the
boot volume. Luckily I had a TM backup and it saved my arsenal. First time I've
seen a MacOS upgrade bork a boot volume.
