User Extensions/Externals

2010-04-28 Thread Graham Heather Harrison
In the rev Preferences there is a field User Extensions which has the file
path of the folder holding user externals. I can't get a tooltip on this, so
how do I access this from a rev script?

What's the situation in the end, and what is to be done?

2010-04-28 Thread Peter Alcibiades

Now that we have gotten to a real list, how bad is it?

Jacque basically suggested earlier that there are things present in all
versions that are missing in others, and that Linux is no worse off than the
others. I don't think this is quite correct because there are aspects of
the Linux situation that we don't seem to have in the others. One, there is
core functionality that simply does not work properly and where there's no
decent workaround. In this category surely we should put:

-- font handling
-- printing
-- resolution and sizing issues in the IDE
-- stability of the editor

Second, there is stuff missing from Linux which seems to represent the
future direction of the platform, and which does not just affect Rev as IDE.
When we see revBrowser and revWeb continue to be missing, this is a rather
big deal. It means that revved pages are a sort of Active X, completely
inaccessible from Linux. It does mean this, doesn't it? Wben I visit a
revved page, like Sarah's, I get invited to install the plug-in, but then am
told that its 'coming soon'. So revved pages appear to be a Linux free zone
right now.

Third, there is a lot of functionality in third party add-ons which is
evidently not going to come for Linux. Now this is very understandable from
the point of view of the writers of the add-ons, but from the point of view
of a user, it adds up to a further feature deficit.

Fourth, there are some ways in which Rev on Linux is not a well behaved
application: here you would put support for virtual desktops.

Another category of the missing features seems less serious: that is sound
and video recording. This is less serious because there are the features in
Linux to allow these functions to be implemented as a shell call from any
gui front end written in anything, so there are workarounds.

Bottom Line.

We have to be pragmatic about this. Rev is a fairly small language
community. On the recording features, it probably makes most sense to just
include in the user guide a shortish section on how to call the standard
Linux tools from the shell to do recording and playback. Maybe there are
other areas in which Mac or Windows specific features can be implemented
easily enough in the shell, and the UG should cover this at least in
outline.

On the core stuff that doesn't work, this has to be fixed, or we don't have
a product. I really like Rev (and the people), but we can't be expected to
carry on struggling with resetting the screen resolution every time we want
to use the IDE, just because we have a 22 inch screen, and to have printing
and fonts not working properly, and to have the editor freezing so we have
to use an editor with none of the integration of the built-in one. This
stuff just has to be fixed if Rev wants to carry on selling a Linux version.

Richard has sometimes argued about resources and market share, and there are
aspects of this where these arguments make sense, but they do not make sense
on this stuff, because there is no point being in a market if your product
is not simply lacking features, which is understandable, but if the features
it has do not work to a level which make it only marginally usable.

RevWeb and RevBrowser are must haves, but in a less urgent sense than the
above. Without the core stuff, the version does not have a present.
Without these, it doesn't have a future. But it does not have to have these
next month, it just has to have them on the development path in the
reasonably near future, and there has to be some proposed date or release in
which they are scheduled. The same applies to support for multiple
desktops. It has to be done if you're going to have an acceptable Linux
product, but it does not have to be done next week. The product is usable
without it. Its just below standard in one respect.

The migration of higher levels of functionality into platform specific add
ons is a serious strategic issue, but if we are in triage mode, it can wait.
I do have thoughts about this, and it should be addressed, but after some of
the more urgent things are taken care of.

Finally, we need some communication about the broken core functionality
elements. If we are not going to fix printing, fonts, the editor, ability
to use the IDE on large screens, with the most goodwill in the world, you
just can't carry on using Rev. Is there a commitment to fixing these soon?
Please someone, say something!

Peter

Re: OT: MacBookPro advice needed.

2010-04-28 Thread Jim Ault
Modern versions of both parallels and fusion can run multiple
instances of Windows while running OSX.

If you purchase a MacBook now vs buy a used model from a private
party, you will be working with Snow Leopard. You need to check for
compatibilities and ask specifically about Snow Leopard to make sure
you will get the performance you want.

Do you have the option of visiting an Apple store? The one in Vegas
is very busy, very helpful, and has a well-trained staff that I have
found tells is like it is and not just to sell computers.

The largest drain on performance is running graphic/video apps no
matter what OS, so triple boot may depend on which apps. I run my
MacBook 13 inch (single boot only) with a second monitor so screen
size is not the issue in my office. I think the adapter mini-VGA
comes with a new MacBook, so the external monitor is simply plug and
play without reboot. OSX moves all the windows and desktop icons
automatically so you can switch on the fly, even back and forth if
necessary.

MacFixiT.com usually has a wealth of info about all the glitches/
tricks and presents a high volume of searchable contributor material.
The VMWare support site also has a wealth of articles about specific
programs and compatibilities.

Good luck,

Re: browser can't find .irev files on new on-rev subdomain

2010-04-28 Thread Martin Baxter
Martin,

I don't have any suggestions about your index.* files not being served,
though it sounds like there is some unintended redirection occurring.

However you can turn the directory file listing off by adding this line
in the .htaccess file:

Options All -Indexes

That will then generate an error if anybody does e.g.

http://www.yourdomain.com/directory_with_no_index_file/

Directory listing denied or whatever

The .htaccess file will affect the directory it is in and all its
subdirectories

This was one of the first things I changed when I got my on-rev account.
They are set up rather insecurely by default, in my view.

Martin Koob wrote:
 Hi Michael

I tried just putting a basic html page in the subdomain's document
root as index.html and that still generates the 404 error.

if I take out the index.irev and index.html pages I will see a listing
of the files in the document root.

I am not sure what I did wrong. The process I used to create the
 subdomain was:
 1. I used cPanel to create the subdomain for a hosted domain
 2. I used the file manage from cPanel to copy the files from a
document root where I was working on the site to the new
 document root.
 3. I updated a config.irev file to ensure all the information
was correct to reflect the new path.

Is there something else I need to do to set up a subdomain.

Hi Graham Heather Harrison,

If I uderstand you correctly, you want your script to find out where
the My Revolution folder resides, in case the user changed it. To get
this path, you can use the revEnvironmentCustomizationPath() function.
This function isn't documented either ;-) and this function is not

Maybe you don't need all this. The externals that I have inside the

If you're on the Improve list, the intro email you received explains the
NDA status of anything posted to that list. I think most people already know
that the next version is in progress, but technically we should discuss it
 over there.

That said, it's pre-release software and those who use it can expect some
bugs. The reason to release it to a limited audience is so that the bugs can
be reported and fixed before the version goes final. Images shouldn't turn
black (that's an alpha glitch which could be due either to Rev or to the
format of your image) so I hope you'll report it. That way the team is
 alerted and can check it.

They don't recommend using pre-release builds for any real work. Stick
with the release version for that stuff.

and far more very nice features.

OT Exporting movie clip to stills

2010-04-28 Thread Mark Swindell
Can anyone point me to a utility that would allow for the following scenario?:

Select a section of a .mov file
Set a particular number of frames desired for export
Have the selected section of the .mov file divided into the above number of
frames, and
Export a still of each section

So let's assume you have a person diving.

Select a dive (a five second section of .mov file)
Select 10 frames
Click export
You get 10 evenly spaced stills of the dive (a stop action sequence) exported
to the folder of your choice

Of course it wouldn't need to work exactly as the above, but this is the
idea... to be able to print freeze frame analysis of sports plays

Thanks,
Mark

Re: User Extensions/Externals

2010-04-28 Thread J. Landman Gay

Graham Heather Harrison wrote:

I am nowhere near deploying, just learning. This parameter is
available, but seemingly not used by rev until you rub it's nose in
it. Since I dislike doing things twice, I see no reason to repeat the
information in a rev script. And the two lessons available, get
around the problem by making the user select the file, which is just
as unpalatable.

Now you introduce choosecutomizationpath which may be a good solution
but I can find no reference to it in the user guide, or the
dictionary. Not the first such omission by any means.

Mark S. has given you an undocumented, internal IDE command. I would not
use it, not at this point in your learning experience.

The second lesson I mentioned explains what to do to make the external
available universally throughout the IDE. I don't think that's what you
want to do, so you can ignore that for now.

The lessons ask you to choose a file, but that is a one-time only event
for the initial setup. It isn't what your users will do, and you won't
have to do it twice either.

Actually, Jacque's suggestion:

I usually put the external in the same working folder with my stack
and point the stack's externals property to a relative file path.

sounds very good to me. As soon as I decipher the guide's explanation
I will give it a go.

In a nutshell: you need to attach the external to your stack. Externals
only load when the stack first opens. You can set the stack's externals
property and after that, each time the stack loads it will also load the
external. For now, that's what I'd do. You are not using a
cross-platform external, only a Mac one, so for now don't worry about
jugging the OS versions, etc. Keep it simple to start. If I were
teaching a class, I wouldn't recommend messing with externals at all at
this point, so do the bare minimum to get it working and worry about the
finer details later.

Put your external bundle into the same folder with your working stack.
Set the externals in the property inspector to the path to the bundle.
For now, use a hard-coded file path specific to your Mac. Save the
stack, close it, reopen it, the external should be available. This isn't
a portable solution, due to the hard-coded file path, but it will let
you continue working and learning. You can fix it later.

I've just noticed a report similar to yours from 2 years ago, now fixed.
It said that black images occur after pasting into a stack. Are you
pasting, or using the import as control feature (the latter is usually
prefereable)? Make sure to specify that in your report. Also, the fixed
bug report mentioned Pages as the culprit, so it would also be good to
say what image editor you're using to create the images.

2. Remember that a video file is a series of discrete frames. Making a

To be honest, I think you could write a little Rev utility pretty
quickly. Place the player controller at the start of the segment, get
the currentTime, put it at the end of the segment, get the curentTime.
By subtracting the two and diving that number by the number of images
you want, you'll get an even distribution.

After that it's just a matter of scripting a loop that sets the
currentTime of the movie to the desired frame and taking a snapshot.

Re: OT: MacBookPro advice needed.

2010-04-28 Thread Paul Looney

Alex,
Over the last decade and a half each new laptop I bought had a bigger
screen. I've always considered this an improvement.
On the last purchase I debated for almost six months between the 15
and the 17. I finally got the 17 and have not regretted that
decision at all. Based on my experience, you would probably be
happier with a 15 instead of the 13 - and happier yet with the 17.
Several people have mentioned connecting to a larger monitor at home
or in the office. I use this arrangement myself and my old eyes like
it a lot. If you are going this route I'd recommend getting an
external monitor with the same resolution as the laptop (just a
larger size) - that way, when you change from laptop to desktop
monitor, everything is in the same relative position (in other words,
the icons don't get re-arranged when moving to the smaller screen).
This works with the high resolution 15 and std. 20 monitor or the
17 and a std. 23 monitor.
For a laptop, with many applications running, the amount of RAM will
make more difference than the processor speed. Get a much as possible.
You didn't ask about the SSD option but I'd advise skipping it on a
laptop - put the money into RAM. BTW I use an SSD on my Mini and it
is fantastic.
I can't stand the glossy screens, some people like them better. This
is an important decision (on both the laptop and the desktop) be sure
to look at both before buying.

I only run OS X so I can't offer any assistance with item 2.
I'm sure you will enjoy your new computer - no matter which one you
get - today you really can't go wrong. Congratulations.

RE: Importing of data from fields into ListMagic table

2010-04-28 Thread Jim Bufalini
Dear Charles,

I have six fields (Plan Date, Last Name, First Name, Grade, Review
 Date, and
Reevaluation Date) that I want to populate in a single row in ListMagic
 when
the user clicks on a populate button. This is not a list. Each time the
 user
uses my app they can add this information for each case to other cases
already into the ListMagic table. Any suggestions?

Are you saying that you have 6 separate fields that are not a part of any
list but on pressing of a button, you want to make the 6 fields part of the
list?

If this is the case then, in your button script, do something like:

put cr field1 tab field2 tab (... etc) after tListData
LMPopulate tListData

Please use the syntax in the syntax tab if you have more than one list or in
different cards. If multiple people are updating the list, use a global as
in gListData.

Now, if this is not the case, I'll need a better example of what exactly you
are trying to do.

Aloha from Hawaii,

Jim Bufalini

Video Grabber Audio question

2010-04-28 Thread stephen barncard
I posted this on the wrong list a couple of days ago.
---

I've gotten the Video grabber to do mostly what I want

- except decide how to control the audio - it always seems to just follow
the video input

Problems
1. The audio mutes in record
2. the audio level is low in preview
3. Ins and Outs don't switch with default settings

is there a missing audio panel for the grabber?
Should I be using Trevor's Quicktime External for all of this and forget the
grabber?

or you can't get there from here ??

This thing is pretty cool; it 'almost works'. I'm using it to capture every
video I've shot since 1971 at full DV resolution (on one hard drive!). I
especially like the ability to set the Progressive setting to
de-interlace, which is not always available in other apps.

thanks in advance.

Yes, very much agreed. The last laptop I bought for someone, I had him go
into stores, talk to his friends, pick up and carry around their 15 and 17

with that over his shoulder on the train or underground, along with books
and papers. The application was working in reference libraries, on
materials you can't either photocopy or photograph, as well as occasional
use in other travel situations.

We ended up buying him a Thinkpad X series, 12.1 inch screen with a neoprene

happy with it. If you use (or in this case teach someone to use) virtual
desktops properly, small screens are much less of a problem.

Re: OT Exporting movie clip to stills

2010-04-28 Thread BNig

Mark,
is this one off or do you want to write a stack that does this repeatedly?
Is it ok to use apple script, i.e. Mac only? What system version do you use?
Do you have Quicktime Pro?
this is a little applescript that assumes your quicktime movie does only
have one track and that is the movie. It makes a selection in that movie and
copies the selection to a new document. Than it deletes all the frames
except every fifth. If you have Quicktime Pro you can export these frames as
image sequence manually. If you don't have Quicktime Pro I can see if I can
provide you with a preset file for exporting the images. You dont need the
Pro license to script and export from Quicktime Player.
Of course you can do all this from within Rev and take the selection of the
movie you manually make and send it as applescript to the Quicktime Player,
which opens the movie, selects what you have selected in Rev and does the
export. It is just a little more scripting.
If you want to go Jaque's way of exporting snapshots you have to make
assumptions about the framerate. Rev only gives you the duration and the
timescale. Usually quicktime movies have a timescale of 600, but not
necessarily so. At a timescale of 600 a duration of 1200 is 2 seconds worth
of movie. At a framerate of 25 that would be 50 frames. A single frame would
have the duration of 24. At a framerate of 30/sec the duration of an
individual frame would be 20. So assume you have a framerate of 30 you would
advance your currenttime by 30 to go to the next frame, or by 150 to advance
by 5 frames.
here is the applescript
--
set tStart to 866
set tEnd to 1081

tell application QuickTime Player
set tName to name of document 1
tell document tName
set the selection start to tStart
set the selection end to tEnd
copy
end tell
set tSelectionDocName to mySelection
make new document
paste document 1
set tSelectionDocName to name of document 1
set tNoOfFrames to the number of frames of track 1 of document
tSelectionDocName
repeat
if tNoOfFrames = 0 then exit repeat
if tNoOfFrames mod 5 ≠ 0 then delete frame tNoOfFrames of track
1 of
document tSelectionDocName
set tNoOfFrames to tNoOfFrames - 1
end repeat
end tell

it also assumes that the movie you are interested in is the frontmost in
Quicktime Player.

Bernd

Can i insert text into a field from a popup button?

You have a couple of choices. The easiest is to just turn off
auto-hilite and substitute your own handlers. On mousedown, hilite the
button, on mouseUp and mouseRelease, unhilite it.

The second way is to use a local script variable to store the
selectedchunk. When the button is released, reselect the stored chunk:

 local sStoredChunk

 on mouseDown
  put the selectedchunk into sStoredChunk
 end mouseDown

 on mouseUp
  select sStoredChunk
 end mouseUp

 on mouseRelease
  select sStoredChunk
 end mouseRelease

Hi René,

I have no experience how Rev react to accents in a standalone but I
notice in your previous post that you use accent in the names of some
of your variables (vxMémoireAgencement, vxAgencementCodé).

In my experience accent and programming languages are not fully
compatible, especially during or after compilation.

If you have not solved your problem yet, may be try to remove all
accents (a quick find / replace could do the job with no effort).

Maybe it's not the problem, it's just a suggestion ;)

Usually, only the first error is relevant. Sometimes, the other errors
give you useful information, but most of the time it is the first

3. See if the dummy file exists on path2.

Still today, you could see some webpages that display
5 or more flash files running at the same time.
Each one of these files wants whole network bandwidth,
whole processor attention and all memory they can get...

Could HTML5 stop this non sense???

Flash is, like Director, a movie player that requires
all computer resources to ensure smooth playback.
In theory, if you are using your computer to play
a movie, you should not try to type a letter or hear
music, or use another applications. Your whole attention
must be focused in that single movie that Flash is playing.
But flash plugin (and developers) do not acknowledge this.

In any moment, and without notice, you could have 25
or 30 flash players running swf and flv content in your
browser. If Adobe enforced a rule of only last player runs,
Flash would gain greater appreciation among all developers.

User Extensions/Externals

For now, use a hard-coded file path specific to your Mac. Save the stack,
close it, reopen it, the external should be available. This isn't a portable

working and learning. You can fix it later.

Fair enough, and I had gratefully established this from your previous pointers.
But I am a magpie learner (and always looking for elegant solutions), so this
seemed like a good time to chase up relative file paths. The explanations in
the guide and dictionary references, like so many others, appear to have been
written for people who knew it once and want a refresh. Still, I have no real
deadlines, and I don't want an overflowing To Hard basket.

P.S. and OT, are random digests with every entry repeated, a common occurrence?

I like that; magpie learner. :) Okay, so read up on defaultfolder,
because you'll need to set it. There's a sort of critical mass you need
to know before Rev falls into place. That's the learning curve.

I can't remember if we mentioned it, but the scripting conference stacks
lead you through some of that curve in order.

I dont' think so, but I don't get the digest, so maybe someone else knows.

RE: [OT] GameOver Mr. Jobs

2010-04-28 Thread Alejandro Tejada

Story has a way to repeat itself.

Once upon a time I used a Mac for work and leisure.
I read MacWorld, MacUser and MacAddict and
for sure learned to love the company and the
philosophy that create the Mac way.

But then, the inconformity of Mac culture drive itself
to endless comparations of itself with Windows users.
In fact, the most detailed articles comparing Windows and
Mac OS appeared in MacWorld and MacUser.

Could you believe that i learned more about Windows
reading Macintosh magazines than many Windows users
learn reading their OS documentation?

When i had the opportunity to sit down with a Windows user
to view his Windows PC, i knew more about the Windows GUI
than himself. All this knowledge directly from Mac magazines.

The tipping point and warning signal that i have to change
from Mac to Windows was an infamous ad with an Intel
processor on the back of a snail...

I have to thanks the Mac culture for educating me in many
computing task, like frecuent data backup, keeping organized
my files in neatly labeled folders and be careful about viruses.
(At the moment of writing this, I still have not infected any of
my computers with a virus)

Time have proved that i make the right choice when i changed
platforms and skip the whole PowerPC and complete list
of propietary interface external devices experience.

Today you could buy a Mac and, if you wish, run Windows and
Linux on the same machine using cross platform hardware
and if you are enough motivated you could do otherwise...

So, what this history teach me about iPad future?
Apple changes, and changes always in the direction
of profits.

Do you want to be 100% accurate about future Apple
developments in software and hardware? Look first at
the directions where profits are blowing.

Could you feel the breeze?... ;-)

Re: User Extensions/Externals

2010-04-28 Thread Bill Vlahos
Sean helped me with the placement. I put it in two places with the External.txt
file that contained ssMacWindows, ssmacwindows.bundle in both locations with
the bundles.

Documents/My Revolution Enterprise/Externals/
Documents/My Revolution Enterprise/Runtime/Mac OS X/Universal/Externals/

And then you have to put your registration key in the application you are
developing:
on openStack
   ssMacWindowsRegister X
end openStack

The command to show that the stack needed saving (showing dot) is:
ssSetWindowModified the windowID of this stack, true

I am trying to use Shao Sean's ssMacWindows, following his instructions in
RevUp Issue 79. Wasn't sure If I should place the ssMacWindows162 folder into

 both.

The first example is to create a field with the following script to turn on
 the black dot updated indicator:
 on keyUp
setWindowModified the windowID of this stack, 1
 end

As soon as I type in the field I get:
execution error at line 2 (Handler: can't find handler) near
 setWindowModified, char 1

setWindowModified looks like a Mac parameter (?). What am I missing?
