This has probably been covered... but is there an easy answer?

Don't know if this is any help, but I just installed the Dreamcard trial
on my new mac-mini (my first mac!). Even after installing the required
codec, the first video I tried still would not play. However, shutting
down and restarting the Dreamcard app solved the problem completely.
Apparently, the codec is read an initialized by Rev and DC when they
start up.

The good news here is that the downloaded video is cached on the HD, so
the next time you need it there isn't a download involved. :)

Re: RUNREV 2.6 DOESN'T WORK

2005-06-07 Thread docmann
From a functionality point of view, I've experienced no problems using
Rev on Linux, although I've never tried using any special
characters. I do though, fully agree with Damien about the look of
the applications in comparison to the Windows (and I assume, Mac)
counterparts. There are some really dramatic differences in the
display quality, especially when it comes to fonts.

I run Rev Studio on Windows, but purchased a separate Dreamcard
license for use on Linux, just so I have a better feel for the
differences.

My linux development goes something like this: Build app on Dreamcard
running on native linux, compile using Rev Studio on Win '98 (running
in Win4Lin), test executable on native Linux... Once I'm satisfied
with the Linux version, I reboot into XP, make any necessary
adjustments to the UI and compile stack again for Windows.

I'm not sure what the solution might be, but it would be more than appreciated.

With that said, I have to add that Chipp's altSQLite demo/tutorial for

A second attempt with considerably larger image files allowed me to

The only features of the test stacks, were an edit field, button and

Problems with resource mages

2005-05-06 Thread docmann
Hello folks,
I've built a simple test stack where I imported a dozen images fom a
folder directly into the stack as resources. Then I added a blank
graphic object for use as a container to display the images in. Next
step was to add a text field (named search) in order to enter the
name of an image I'd like to display, along with a second field (named
ext) to hold the file extension for the image.

Finally, I added a button to click, which holds my script.

I have no problems displaying images into my container using either a
local file or URL location, but cannot for the life of me figure out
how to display an image directly from within the stack file itself.

on mouseUp
put field search field ext into tGraphic
set the imageSource of Image to tGraphic
end mouseUp

When I run the script above, the debugger clearly shows that the
filename of the image is being built correctly, so I assume that my
problem is related to getting the correct resource ID of the image.

Can anyone point out were I'm going wrong?

Thanks,

Rev.101 Revisited... Background groups

2005-04-27 Thread docmann
Hello folks,
I'm getting ready to rewrite (expand) my existing application using a
new tabbed interface and another design question comes to mind before
getting too serious about it.

When using a selection of controls as a grouped background on a tabbed
interface, do the controls retain (inherit) all of the same properties
for existing scripts?

More importantly in this case, can the script of a background group be
changed on each individual card, without having the same effect on
*all* cards?

Basically, I need the same control interface (UI) for each of my tabs,
but with different scripting actions for each card.

Thanks,

Thanks for the suggestions, Dan.
I'll try that with a sample stack to test the functionality. The UI
has become extremely complex already which is the reason for the
re-write (adding tabs and more features). One way or another, I'm sure
I'll get it figured out.

Off-hand, one *possible* way of doing this (if I'm understanding
correctly what you want, which is no guarantee)
...

Maybe someone more awake than I am can offer a cleaner solution.

Heh heh... I'm sure I could have offered a better description, but I
was still 3/4 asleep myself when I posted. Writing code and asking Rev
questions between 4 - 5:30 am without the benefit of a full pot of
coffee is a sad, sad, sad thing indeed. ;)

Appreciate the help!

 1. Use a group with background behavior for the controls.
 2. Have each control call a function or handler with the same name on
 all tabs.
 3. Put the *scripts* for those handlers at the card level rather than
 the background level.

Pressing a button in the group might, e.g., send the message
iGotClicked in all cases (because you cannot have different scripts
for the objects in a single group without doing a lot of conditional
processing as far as I can come up with off the top of my head). But on
one card, the iGotClicked handler does one thing and on another card,
the handler of the same name does something completely different.

 Make sense?

One thing I've been thinking about a lot lately in conjunction with a

altSQlite out the gate for all data storage, skipping over cards and
custom properties altogether (I'm talking about storage of record-type

Anyone else thinking along these lines?

I absolutely agree. Personally, next to finding Rev in the first place
(yeah!), Chipp's altSQlite plugin has got to be the most exciting news
I've run across in quite some time.

...I've already shot my personal software budget for this month or
I'd have already licensed a copy. That's okay, though next month's
budget is just around the corner. :)

Once the ability to use binary data is firmly in place, I see the

..well, that is unless Kevin and crew decide to add a native SQL
database feature directly to Rev. :)

protecting images in a standalone

2005-03-18 Thread docmann
Hello folks,
Maybe someone out there can point me in the right direction...
I'm finally getting started with my standalone DB app and need some
ideas on how to go about protecting a *bunch* of jpg images that are
used in the database. My preference is to continue hosting them on a
remote server for use as needed, but the new consensus is that I need
to built a fully standalone app. :(

I've thought about just dumping them into a folder using an odd file
naming convention along with an extention other than jpg, which would
deter most average folks from pilfering.

On the other hand, although there is no great value to anyone other
than a few potential competitors, this will be a commercial app and
the images are of a certain proprietary nature.

Any ideas or suggestions for a better protection scheme that could be
incorporated into a REV app?

Hello Trevor,
That's pretty close to how I have the app set up now, with the
difference being that the images are stored on a totally remote server
from the data. Basically, using portions of the data stored in the
mysql file, I build a URL for each query in order to download/display
the image.

It works great and that's how I would prefer to keep it!

Unfortunately, there are some concerns about end user's having slow
connections, the possibilites of server down time, so on and so forth
that we hope to avoid, so everything really needs to be stored on the
user's hard drive.

The mysql version is the *easily* the most functional app I've ever

virtually no problems and updates are a breeze. It truly breaks my
heart to have to go any other direction... :(

One more question for the evening

I'm almost ready for my weekend marathon of Rev coding, but I need

before going too much further.

Let's say that after I've extracted and displayed data from my
database (mostly in static labels), I want the user to be able to
click a button and add the contents of certain fields into a table.
After the initial row of data is added to to the table (no problemo),
how would I script the same action for subsequent clicks?

Shopping list style:

Click -- adds a can of beans to row one in the table
New Query
Click -- add a loaf of bread to the second row

Re: Databasing with Rev... design considerations

2005-01-31 Thread docmann
Valentina would work, but first I suggest you try an internal method as
 you suggest.
Make a data stack, either as a separate stack file or as a sub-stack of
 your interface stack.
You have 4 tables, so give it 4 fields and stick your data in them.

If it is all comma separated, then it's easy to extract various items
for display in the interface. Use the filter command to find certain
records, taking care to filter a copy of the data, not the original as
 filter removes non-matching lines e.g.
put fld Table1 of stack Data into tData
filter tData with * tWordToFind *
 put tData into fld FoundRecords

When you build the app, if the data stack is a sub-stack, make sure you
check the box that says, save sub-stacks as separate files. This means
they can be written to and saved again.

 Cheers,

more advanced search options without any effort.

Hello Robert,
I suspect that you are right in that I'll be pushing pretty close to
usable limits with a table of this size. I'm guessing however that
since I don't need any advanced search features for this app, Rev will
be at least on par with the speed of my spreadsheet app or Windows
notepad's find option for the same data...

Worst case, I'll learn some new coding techniques with Rev before
having to look for an external solution. ;)

Databasing with Rev... design considerations

2005-01-30 Thread docmann
Now that the mySQL version of my first Rev app has proven to work so
well (thanks to all who helped me out!), I'm trying to get my head
wrapped around the process of building a static version. By stactic,
I mean non-server based, for folks who have slow (or no) internet
connections.

The app requires 4 tables of data, the largest of which has 10 fields
and around 25,000 records when complete. This app basically functions
as a searchable lookup table and will not be editable by the user, nor
do I wish for the user to have access to the data other than from
within my application.

The simplest method I can think of is to somehow store and use CSV
data files (exported from the mySQL version) from a separate stack,
but I unfortunately don't have a clue as to how to set something like
this up.

What might be the best approach here?

Unfortunately, I still haven't taken time to really explore many

Here's a general question: When using a standalone that calls a stack

create image Holder -- optional - if the image object doesn't exist yet
set the filename of image Holder to myURL

set the width of image Holder to 100
set the height of image Holder to trunc(the width of image
 Holder/naturalRatio)
else -- naturalRatio 1, image width is proportionally greater
set the height of image Holder to 100
set the width of image Holder to trunc(the height of image
 Holder * naturalRatio)
end if
set the lockLoc of image Holder to true -- maintain current size
set the loc of image Holder to 100,100 -- or wherever you want to put it

The above sets the smaller dimension of the image to 100 pixels. You
can vary this to set the larger dimension to 100 pixels by setting
the height to 100 first if naturalRatio 1, and the width if
 naturalRatio 1.

Re: Actual vs. Possible (was 'Menu woes')

But I'm more concerned here for new users: it may be too easy for them
to walk away from this list feeling that the whole thing's too broken to
use, and will remain so until some unknowable date in the future in
which RunRev might possibly implement all of the suggestions posted here.

As a newb to RunRev, I really can't add much of anything useful to
the conversation other than to point out just how true Richard's
perception is from someone recently on the outside looking in.

Since the initial release of Rev and up until a few days ago, I kept
track of development progress by downloading the most recent version
about every six months or so. I'd kick the tires a little to see
what was new, while trying to justify (in my mind) the cost of
licensing in comparison to it's features.

Although I've always had an overall favorable impression of the
product, much of what I would read on this list all too often had a
negative impact. Reading that Rev needs this, that or something else
left my perception pretty much just as Richard describes. The good
news is that I've now found first hand that nothing could be further
from the truth. :)

Here's a short story to illustrate:

For the the little commercial project I'm currently working on, I
spent over a year of research and planning, along with trying numerous
programming tools without ever getting to first base. Two weeks with
Dreamcard and now a week with Rev Studio and I already have the app
about 60% complete and mostly functional just as it is. (Many thanks
to everyone that has helped me in the process!)

Today I demo'd the current version at the office and my employer (soon
to be a marketing partner in the project) is *estatic* with the
results. He simply couldn't believe that I've accomplished so much
functionality in a short period of time. :) :) :)

Regardless of any flaws that may exist or improvements that may need
to be made in the future, RunRev is now my can do tool...

I don't believe that I've made any mistakes at all in that new perception.

I'm not sure if what you want can be done using only one card, but it
can be easily done using a card for each tab. Basically, you make your

then script the tab control to open to the correct card.

Have a look at the video tutorial covering window objects for exact
instructions. (About 6 mins deep into the video.)

I too would be interested in knowing if it can be accomplished using

Scaling images on the fly?

2005-01-02 Thread docmann
Hello folks,
I'm writing an application that in addition to numerous other things,
also downloads and displays various jpg. graphics from a web server.
Everything is working fine at this point, except that the graphics
are non-standard in size and do not always fit correctly in the image
container.

Is there a way to constrain or scale the display image while
maintaining the proper size perspective of the original image, to
avoid distortion?

Thanks,

Hooray and thanks!

2004-12-30 Thread docmann
Hooray! :) :) :)
I just completed the transaction, upgrading from Dreamcard to Rev
Studio as well as ordering a copy of Dan Shafer's Software at the
speed of thought. Taking advantage of the Christmas special, I know
that I got a really great deal on an already great product and look
forward to trying out the AltBrowser and Magic Carpet products as
well. (I'm a genuine browser-head and have enjoyed building several
using other development tools.)

As I think I've mentioned before, I've been following the development
progress of Rev off and on from it's very first release and finally
decided to dive in. Hat's off to the Rev development team for an
amazing product!

I'd also like to again say thank you to all of the fantastic folks
that participate on the list for all of the great help and advice to
newb's like myself. Although Rev is so much different than any other
programming tool/language I've ever used, you good folks have given me
the confidence that I'll be able to learn and prosper with it.

Much appreciated!

more SQL problems

2004-12-29 Thread docmann
Hello folks,
I've been trying to resolve a problem on my own off and on for several
days and just can't seem to get my head wrapped around it all. Even
worse, now with so many attempts and errors under my belt, I have
finally reached the point of almost total confusion. :(

Let's say that I have a MySQL database named quickref
The 3 records in my table look something like this:
--
| City | State | Zip | --*City is the primary key

  Houston Texas 74239

  Portland Oregon 32791

  DallasTexas 75217
--

dbID is the ID returned when the connection is established

revField1 is named myCity --used to display record content
revField2 is named myState --used to display record content
revField3 is named myZip --used to display record content

revField4 is named CurrSQL and contains SELECT * FROM quickref WHERE City =
revField5 is named mySearch and contains Portland

I have no problems connecting to the database and returning the dbID
and all I want to do is display the contents of a record in each of
three fields based on the name of the city entered into the mySearch
field.

RevButton Named Search
on mouseUp
  put field CurrSQL into tSQLStringPartOne
  put field mySearch into tSQLStringPartTwo
  put tSQLStringPartOne tSQLStringPartTwo into tSQLQuery

  get revDataFromQuery(,,dbID,tSQLQuery,tMyResults)

end mouseUp

I've tried using an almost endless number of
revDatabaseColumnNamed() combinations trying to extract the data,
without luck. Although there may still be more than one problem in my
scripting, I *think* that the issue is in the way I'm trying to use
the revDatabaseColumnNamed() function which I don't fully understand.

Based on the info shown, can someone please show me how to properly
get the record set into variables so I can display them in the
appropriate fields on my stack?

I'd really appreciate any help or advise.

Re: more SQL problems

2004-12-29 Thread docmann
You folks are fantastic! It works exactly as intended now. :)

Geesh, I still don't know how I got so far off track in attempting
this shaking and pounding head on desk vigorously and clearly need
to revisit the documentation. :(

On a side note, I intentionally entered data that I knew did not
exist, just to see what would happen and got a revdberr, invalid
column number message. Is there a proper way to test and/or trap
these types of errors when a record doesn't exist?

Again, thank you very VERY much!

revDataFromQuery does not use the revDatabaseColumnNamed function --
that works quite differently. You want the revQueryDatabase function
  instead.

  Try this:

  on mouseUp
put revQueryDatabase(dbID, field CurrSQL field mySearch) into q

if q is not a number then
  answer error Database Error: q
  exit mouseUp
end if

revMoveToFirstRecord q
put revDatabaseColumnNamed(q, City) into field myCity
put revDatabaseColumnNamed(q, State) into field myState
put revDatabaseColumnNamed(q, Zip) into field myZip

revCloseCursor q

Once the video has finished downloading a new screen should appear
showing a Play button, which in turn will launch your default AVI
player.

Works quite well on my end at least. :)

Thank's everyone, I appreciate your insight.

the Rev lists archives in second position and the
Rev doc for the details you will get in reading it :-)

I certainly can't argue with that. Although a lot of what I see here
in the list is still over my head skill wise, it's all very
interesting and helpful.

It seems that I'm definitely on the way to becoming a RevHead since
I'm already to the point where I check the list before I check my
regular e-mail account. ;)
Much appreciated!

Totally from a newbie's perspective in trying to get up to speed with

the printed Rev doc's or Dan Shafer's book?

Since the printed manuals are just printed duplicates of the online
material, you would probably get more mileage from the Shafer book.
That book addresses newcomers specifically. And you always have access
to the Rev manual from the Help menu.

mySQL Query... need some help

2004-12-16 Thread docmann
I'm a genuine newbie and have been having a major difficulty in trying
to format a mySQL query and thought that maybe someone can point me in
the right direction.

All I'm trying to accomplish at this point is to search for a specific
record and display the info in the proper fields. Here's how I have
things set up...

Currently the DB is connected when the card opens

DB name is: mybuddies
Table name is :revprogrammers

DB Fields:
FirstName (Primary)
LastName
PhoneNumber

Text Fields In Stack:
ShowFirstName
ShowLastName
ShowPhoneNumber

Query Field:
myQuery

I *think* this is the right general direction (not working, obviously)

on mouseUp

get revDataFromQuery(,,SELECT * FROM mybuddies WHERE FirstName =
field 'myQuery')

end mouseUp

I'd jump for joy if someone could point out what I'm doing wrong or
point me to a *really simple* mySQL tutorial/stack to learn from

Thanks,

Re: Dreamcard Player - help

2004-12-14 Thread docmann
Hello Mark,
If it's any consolation, I also have a couple of threads currently
running on the list about issues with the player not functioning with
a mySQL database.

With my testing, running my stack from the development environment on
either Linux or XP, works as expected, but the same stacks do not run
in the player on either O/S. I've tried just about every possible
combination as to where to place the support files without any luck.

Hopefully someone from support will have a look to see what the
problem might be. Waiting patiently :)

On another note, don't be too discouraged about the Rev products in
general. I've been watching/testing the development of Rev since the
very early days and it's really quite remarkable just how far it's
progressed.

Problems with the player or not, I'm still convinced that it's the
best multi-platform development tool available and will upgrade to the
studio version shortly.

mySQL Dreamcard

2004-12-12 Thread docmann
My first attempt at posting this to the list apparently didn't work,
so hopefully this does not end up as a duplicate... my apologies if it
does.

A couple of weeks ago I licensed Dreamcard as a learning/development
tool prior to a final move to Rev Studio, thinking that others could
assist with the testing process using the free player. (which I
thought was functional for any type of application.)

I've been working on a mySQL database app hosted on a remote server
and can access the db without problems from my development box.
However, when I tried testing the app on other computers (Linux XP),
I learned that the player apparently requires some additional files.

The Linux box clearly shows that the player application cannot load the needed
library file(s), although I've manually copied them into the player's directory.

I've searched the download section at the web site without luck, so
maybe someone can point me to the additional files that are required
for both O/S's?

Thanks in advanced for any help. :)
