uploading a test revlet on safari to a web site

2009-07-24 Thread revinfo1155
I've successfully created a web application with webmedia. it runs good
although I'll have to clean up a few things. The question is, how do I upload
the web application from the test mode in safari that webmedia creates to an
actual web page on the web? i have access to idisk storage and iweb. Can it be
done on them?

  Bill,

Thank you for the fresh insider perspective! Perhaps I can finally put
to rest my conspiracy theories. (I hate it when that happens.)

 e
I guess I assumed the leadership at Apple controlled the robustness
and goals of the teams involved in product development, even at Claris.
The HyperCard team apparently lacked in both areas.

Thanks for the perspective.

Well, I had the good fortune to be at Claris during the HyperCard
transition. I knew the development team and the product managers
well. I

don't think it was anything so deliberate/nefarious as you surmise.

  - Claris didn't know how to make money on a program that had been
given away
for free. The demotion of the free HyperCard to a player and
starting to

charge for the full version ended up upsetting/alienating a lot of
 customers.

  - In those days, there was free, unlimited, red carpet technical
support.
You could call in with just about any question and the support
group would
go to the ends of the earth to solve it for you. (This included
writing
scripts and debugging stacks.) With everyone from commercial
developers to
11th graders calling in, HyperCard became one of the most expensive

products

to support, surpassing even FileMaker Pro.

  - Key members of the Apple team that built HyperCard declined to
move to
Claris and the product just wasn't upgraded quickly enough or
smartly
enough. It took forever to get their act together under the
reorganization
chaos. Not enough features were added, and the ones that were often

were not

done in a way that pleased customers.

  - No one knew how to position it within the Claris product line.
FileMaker
was also the chief moneymaker, and there was some question why
someone would
use FileMaker if HyperCard was able to do the same things (easy
reports, for
example). There was actually a lot of contention for a while
whether to use

HyperCard or FileMaker as the engine for the technical knowledgebase
 (FileMaker won).

  - As a producer of software primarily targeted at consumers and
small

businesses, Claris didn't have the depth of experience to create a
 developer-oriented tool.

  - The HyperCard team tended not to integrate well with the rest of
the
company. They didn't eat lunch at the same tables. :) I think this
prevented

a lot of discussion, crossover ideas, and innovative thinking from
 occurring.

  - HyperCard was not making a profit; there were therefore no
substantial
funds for marketing it. Combined with all the other factors above,
other

companies (like SuperCard) stepped in and started to compete for the
HyperCard audience. Market share of HyperCard fell dramatically.

After HyperCard went back to Apple there may have been some
additional

machinations that I'm not aware of. However,

  1) The Claris spinout was the beginning of the end for HyperCard as

far as
I'm concerned. It's not that Claris was a bad company (quite the
opposite);
it's just that insufficient strategic consideration was given to
how it
would grow there, and it probably should never have left Apple
anyway.

  2) I never once at Claris heard the notion that HyperCard stacks
reflected

poorly on the image of the Macintosh. Quite the opposite.

  3) No one -- except a few crazies no one listened to -- saw the
potential
for HyperCard to impact the Web (and vice versa). So close yet so
far.
(sigh.) HyperCard's paradigm was mired in floppy-disk distribution
of
  stacks... a bandwidth-friendly, streaming, component-ized,
multi-user,
client-server world was simply not envisioned. By 1993/1994 the Web

was

clearly the next big thing and HyperCard missed the boat.

tablefield and standalone app issues

2004-11-05 Thread Revinfo1155
Thanks to all who gave info on table fields. The design came out well but
I'm still experiencing trouble with the function of the tablefield stack. When
I build a standalone to run my tablefield stack, I chose the table option to
add that feature to the standalone. Was that the thing to do? Although I did
that, as I tabbed thru the tablefield, the cells seems to get a bit confused
and then the stack and the standalone went all white and froze. My first
inclination was a memory allocation problem (not enough memory). I went back to
the standalone builder and couldn't find a way to allocate more memory.
Couldn't we do that in an earlier version? Any help with these issues is
appreciated as I'm new to tablefield behaviour.

It could be the player is configured for maximum security (whatever
that is called in Rev.) It is supposed to act something akin to the
shockwave player, which prevents harmful activities (saving files,
deleting files, etc.) on the end-user's computer.

I don't think so. I haven't tried it yet, but I bet if you incorporate
normal Save or Save as scripted menu items in your stacks, then they
should save according to the scripts, otherwise what good would the player
be? I mean, it should disallow access to code, but not to updating files
which are specifically interacted with, and handled by, the code in your UI.

All the best,
Ken N.

I have produced a small number of CBTs for a UK government
organisation who need to validate all executables for security
reasons.  Supplying a single player with add-on stacks makes life
easier in this respect. It is easier to persuade public sector
customers that they are only running a single program with
downloadable modules than it is to say they need to allow an
increasing number of new executables.  They get twitchy about the
security implications of new EXE files!

Also, it minimises network traffic if each client workstation has a
single player installed which is set up as the helper-app within the
browser so the user can download any of a number of CBT stacks
without having to download the player engine each time or have to
decide what to do with an executable (with attendant "security

Also, the Pan recently uploaded a bunch of sounds, but they're for Macs and
may need to be converted:

Sounds

2003-03-15 Thread Revinfo1155
I want to experiment with sounds in a stack but don't know where to begin. Does rev have any built-in sounds other than the beep. Where do you get sounds and how do you get them into the stack?

Questions about opening stacks

2003-02-20 Thread Revinfo1155
When I try to open a stack file by clicking on the file itself it doesn't open the rev application. Is this normal?

On my Mac sys 10.2.4, often when I try to open a stack thru the rev applicatio/file menu -when I locate the file it is dimmed or disabled? Why

As always -thanks for the help

How to edit a palette?

2003-02-06 Thread Revinfo1155
The Rev documentation says you can make a palette editable with the topLevel function and then control click (MacOS) and a contextual menu will open which allows you to edit a palette and of course study the scripts etc. Does anyone have experience with this? I'm not having any luck with it.
