Quick question here:

Does s3 plugin support S3 signature version 4 ?

FYI: s3 plugin works when region which has support for both v2 and v4
signature. Whereas it seems problematic, when new regions (eg. ap-south-1)
which only has v4 signature version.

Note, per the first item above, I've put together an initial proposal of
the compatibility commitments we should make to the users. It is important
to note that my outline is about our public commitment. As a development
community, we should always work to avoid disruptive or backwards
incompatible changes on public apis even if the our public commitment
policy doesn't dictate it.

The proposal is attached here:

Re: Drill Hangout Starting

2016-03-29 Thread Jacques Nadeau
Just a quick call today.

Attendees:

Vitalli
Arrina
Laurent
Jacques

Discussions around DESCRIBE SCHEMA & DESCRIBE TABLE where? Calcite or
Drill?

- Propose initially committing to Drill. Also open two bugs to move to
Calcite once DRILL-3993 is done.

Question around progress on DRILL-3993?

- Jacques and Arrina to both bump thread to figure out next steps.

Question: why Parquet only read, not write INT96 type? Should we add INT96
type?

- INT96 read so we can convert to Drill internal date type when data is
produced by Impala. Write isn't implemented because there is no current way
to tell Drill to output data in that format (as there is no concept of a
96bit integer inside Drill).
- Propose open discussion on Drill mailing list if desire adding type. Also
question of whether the issue is actually we need to enhance Hive to
support Parquet defined timestamp types for consumption. Jacques noted that
extra types can be expensive and Drill probably needs to deprecate types
instead of adding types.

Question: Why does drill have var16char?

- Vitalli making changes to remove var16char from Hive translation
- We should probably remove var16char from Drill v2

Short discussion around removing spill files, Vitalli to update PR to clean
up earlier than end of JVM.

thanks everyone who attended!

Jacques

Haven't heard of it. Might be interesting, especially I the ignite grid stores

Re: Hangout Starting

2016-01-29 Thread scott cote
Before I started helping Ellen Friedman (MapR) promote Drill (at the inception
of DFW Data Science), I was asked to be a committer to Apache Ignite
(https://ignite.apache.org/ ) . Unfortunately, my
new job had no allowances for that project and my homelife was not conducive
for me to fulfill the role of a committer.Having said that, the tool seems
fairly impressive and might be a great way to have an in memory gird component
for drilling …. They have a sql interface that seems like a natural extension
for Drill. Working with objects in memory almost always beets the pants off of
pulling data from storage ….

Reach out to them u...@ignite.apache.org

Might be a nice mashup for Dremio and GridGain :)

Hope this helps you guys grow.

Drill Hangout minutes - 2015-10-06 Re: Drill Hangout starting now

2015-10-06 Thread Parth Chandra
Drill Hangout 2015-10-06

Attendees: Aman, Andries, Daniel, Kris, Charlie, Julien, Jacques, Jason,
Jinfeng, Matt, Parth, Sudheesh, Venki

   1.

Matt hitting issues with Information Schema queries against Hive. Will
connect with Venki on Slack to resolve.
   2.

Julien reported that he's working on speeding up building and running
tests, noting that build-time code generation runs twice and local
Drillbits for testing take 3 second to shut down.
   3.

Parth mentioned an off-by-one bug in Parquet reading and that he will
add more Parquet reading tests as part of the fix.
   4.

Aman reported a regression in performance while trying metadata caching
with 400K files. This is being investigated.
   5.

Daniel, Jacques, and Sudeesh discussed issues underlying DRILL-2288,
such as the ScanBatch.next() return value (IterOutcome) contract, handling
empty JSON files, handling zero-row sources that still have schemas, how to
limit the DRILL-2288 fix to avoid needing to rework lots of downstream
   code, etc.
   6.

Sudheesh had various updates - Limit 0 and Limit 1 queries. Jacques
suggestion to handle Limit 0 queries on schema aware systems to the
planning phase. Perf tests on the RPC processing offloading seem to show
higher memory consumption. This may simply be due to allowing more
concurrent queries as result of the patch. Perf tests reveal issues on
local data tunnel changes but these may be existing problems that are now
showing up as a result of faster local data processing. Question to be
resolved - should we merge these anyway?
   7.

Jason helping address some recent issues with flatten involving large
   number of repeated values.
   8.

We unanimously volunteered Sudheesh to work on the performance cluster.
