Shale - init and destroy being called twice

2006-07-14 Thread vramineni

Hi,

I am a newbie to web development in Java. Coming from ASP.Net background, I
thought Shale framework would be easier for me to understand. Actually, I am
able to progress well with Shale/Clay/MyFaces and pretty much do everything
that I could using ASP.Net. I am stuck with this problem of init() and
destroy() being called twice. First init() call has PostBack set to false
always. I thought I was doing something wrong, I have downloaded the Shale
usecases project and even this project has the same issue. Right now, I am
getting by using a counter. Any help on this would be appreciated.

Re: Dynamic Sort depending on the field requested by user.

2006-07-14 Thread paz . periasamy
Sorting is purely Java logic. I dont think Struts has anything with
sorting logic.

You can use Java comparators to do the job easily rather than you
programming it.

Hi Group,

I have a requirement like I need to display a list containing Name,
Date, Department, Last update etc., after displaying the list the user
can select any field to sort the list display, but it should not query
again, only with the first time result we should be able to provide the
sort order as per user request. He can request the sort order on any
field. Can any one know how to achieve this with struts? Any help, links

Problem using logic:present tag

2006-07-14 Thread Pankaj Gupta

Hi All,

I am passing parameters to my JSP like:
forward name=successActive path=/hello.jsp?isActive=true
contextRelative=false/

and reading the parameter using logic:present tag which is not working:
logic:present name=isActive
   bean:message key = activeTitle/

 /logic:present

However if I do the same thing using scriptlets:
% if(request.getParameter(isActive) != null
request.getParameter(isActive).equals(true) )
%
   bean:message key = activeTitle/

It works well. Please suggest what I am doing wrong.

You can name it whatever you like - for the default implementation you
configure the actual file name using a message-resources element in
the struts-config.xml and specifying the file name in the parameter:

AW: [HELP] Need reasons to upgrade from Struts 1.1 to 1.2.9

2006-07-14 Thread Martin Kindler
Shawn,

I do not know whether any bug fixes in the 1.2.x releases fix bugs in the
1.1.x releases. I would read the release notes of the releases newer than
your currently used release.

The same for security patches. And you should also check whether the
problems fixed in a newer release are relevant to your app. I didn't upgrade
to some of the releases of the 1.2.x family simply because the faulty
behavior could not happen in my environment.

Bug fixes are all listed in the release notes (theres a link in each

Hi Anil,

I have a similar section of a project that I am working on. I am using AJAX
DOJO for the sorting. It is working for me great so far.

If you go to www.dojotoolkit.org and download the scripts...They have a
sortable table widget that you can wrap around any table. It is very simple
to use.

If you want an example with some source code on this you can check out:

see it in action - General Widgets - SortableTable

Best of luck...

Re: Compare two strings in Validator frame work]

2006-07-14 Thread Adam Gordon

For basic string validation you can do the following:

Use the validwhen attribute value for the depends attribute on the
field element.  I.e.:

   field property=oaSpeakerTollFreeNumber depends=validwhen
 arg position=0 key=your.i18n.property.key/
 var
   var-nametest/var-name
   var-value(propertyName == someValue)/var-value
 /var
   /field

Where propertyName is the value of the property attribute for the
item in your JSP.

Note that the var-value element will support logical and/or using the
keyword and and or to join sections. Note also that you must
surround your boolean expression with parend and if you do use the

Re: how to dynamically generate select fields

2006-07-14 Thread Yanroy

Thank you very much for your reply. That looks like it could solve my
problem. I guess I'd have to code the input fields by hand (i.e. using
INPUT ... instead of a taglib tag), but that's not at all a problem.
However, I've never before seen or used those tags that begin with c:.
After a little googling, I discovered they're part of Struts EL. I know I'm
not currently using that, and it's not at all clear how to begin using it.
I found a wiki page at http://wiki.wsmoak.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?StrutsAndJSTL
that just made me more confused; I guess there's some kind of strange
heirarchy between all these different version numbers that I'm not seeing.
As a sidenote, I've found all the (limited) struts documentation and example
websites to be very hard to follow. It seems like much of the struts
documentation is out of date or doesn't convey any useful information (or
worse, it's just plain wrong). Anyways, back on subject, I'm not sure which
version of struts I have - I'm not in charge of server configuration. I
couldn't find an easy way to find out what my version is, so I looked inside
the struts.jar file in tomcat and I found files with a number of version
numbers, the highest being 2.3, which leads me to believe I'm using struts
2.3. So if I'm reading that wiki correctly, now I have to make some kind of
decision between Struts-EL and JSTL? Aren't all these tags Struts-EL?
Maybe the apache docs were lying to me when they said the c taglib was
Struts-EL. Please help me straighten out this confusion. Also, I assume
the syntax ${variable} is another Struts-EL or c taglib thing... I've also
never used that, but I recall seeing it on some doc page eons ago...

Thank you very much for all your help,
Ryan

Servlet 2.4 + JSTL 1.1 + Struts original taglib

Look inside struts.jar, at the MANIFEST.MF file.

If you don't know what version of Struts you're using, it's going to
be hard for you to find the documentation that pertains to that
version. So if you're finding things that are wrong it just may be
that they apply to a different version.

I guess I'm using 2.2...  I've got this:

!DOCTYPE web-app
  PUBLIC -//Sun Microsystems, Inc.//DTD Web Application 2.2//EN
  http://java.sun.com/j2ee/dtds/web-app_2_2.dtd;

I'm glad you could settle that more or less definitively... The lab manager
here (who IS in charge of server configuration) doesn't know what struts
version we're using any more than I do. The second time I asked him (after
my last post), he told me the only way we'll find out what version it is
would be to download the latest and drop it into the server, thus making it
the latest version :P

So, that wiki page I referenced in my last post doesn't mention 2.2. I
guess I'm up a creek then? I'll see if I can upgrade.

Thanks for putting up with my inane questions and providing decent help :)

This means your application is using version 2.2 of the Servlet

Not a bad idea, as long as it doesn't break anything... 1.2.9 is the

It does now. :) And yes, if being able to use JSTL is important,
you'll need to move to a later version of the Servlet spec. This may
or may not involve upgrading your Struts version... as yet we don't
know what that is.

Re: how to dynamically generate select fields

2006-07-14 Thread Yanroy

I'm glad you confirmed for me that the Servlet version has little or nothing
to do with the struts version... I was beginning to suspect this. There
should be a wiki page somewhere that demystifies all this... Things I'd like
to be able to find (all in one place) are the relations between different
versions of struts, the Servlet versions and which combinations are
interoperable with the various taglibs. Also, it would be nice to know what
libraries/websites/etc provide each of these (so people like me who don't
know what they're doing can figure out which ones they have, which versions
they have, and how to upgrade any pieces of the puzzle that aren't the right
version). I'd be more than happy to write this wiki page, but obviously I'm
still asking questions, so I don't have the answers :) If someone would
like to provide me with that info, I could write the page (Wendy, I just
realized that's your wiki I discovered... maybe there would be a good place,
except it's read only?).

The deeper I go into this, the more tempted I am to just put some java code
into my JSP file... I could have been done with this yesterday if I was
willing to stoop that low.

Thanks for your help (again),

Yes, this stuff had been confusing for me too ;)

Original Struts taglib contains tags for HTML controls, for bean
access and for iterating collections. It was released in the stone
ages, way before JSTL.

JSTL is a standard JSP custom library (actually a spec) that has many
features of Struts taglib like bean access or iterators.

JSTL can be used in any JSP page, and it is a *standard* so expect
more people to know JSTL than Struts tags. Well, may Struts tags can
be used in regular JSP pages too, but these tags are not standard and
frankly, quite cumbersome to use.

Therefore it is recommended to use JSTL tags whenever possible. The
glaring omission in JSTL tags is that they do not cater for HTML form
I/O, they do not generate proper input names so values from them can
be read into applicaiton. For this you should use Struts html:...
tags.

Now, if you decide to use JSTL tags, you need your servlet container
to support Servlet 2.3 spec (say, Tomcat4, Resin 2) or better yet
Servlet 2.4 spec (say, Tomcat 5, Resin 3). In SRV2.3 container you can
use JSTL 1.0 library only. The EL syntax is limited to JSTL-specific
tags, so your markup does not look so nice. In SRV2.4 container you
can use JSTL1.1, so you can refer to Java beans right in the middle of
HTML markup.

Your web.xml does not have to match actual servlet container version,
so you can use 2.3 web.xml in 2.4 container, but you will be limited
with SRV2.3 features. What's the point in that? So usually your
web.xml doctype matches actual container capabilities.

Struts version is not relevant. You can use Struts on any container
(starting with 2.2 I believe). I think that upcoming 1.3.5 release
warrants for SRV2.3 minimum).

how to dynamically generate a property within JSP tags using JSTL -EL

2006-07-14 Thread Devkanth Jijjavarapu

Any help in this regard, would be appreciated..
I have been trying to generate a property using a list defined in the
formbean. I want to know, if i can populate an empty list while looping
through another outer list

  table width=100% border=0 style=margin-top:5px;
margin-bottom:20px; summary=layout
tbody
  c:forEach var=parm items=
${reportDefFormBean.reportParmList} varStatus=status
c:choose
  c:when test=${parm.controltype
== PARM_CONTROL_TYPE_CHECKBOX}
tr
  td width=20%
c:out value=${parm.displayname}//td
  td
html:checkbox
property=${reportDefFormBean.reportParmValueList[status.count]} value=
true/html:checkbox
  /td
/tr
  /c:when
/c:choose
  /forEach
/tbody
  /table

I am trying to set the status count into the second
List(reportParmValueList), the formbean is the place both the lists reside.
Based on the control type, i have to display the corresponding displayname
and property.

I would really like some fedback and some help in this regard. I had to
refrain using Maps since i was having the same problem as Lists receiving
an error as shown below

No getter method for property component of bean
org.apache.struts.taglib.html.BEAN'

The reason because, property attribute always looks for a getter method in
the formbean, but in this case I am just passing the value to a property
from one list to the other..
entry in one list becomes the counter of the entry in the other.

ActionMapping forward.findForward(str) with dynamic parameters

Example:

TestAction.java:

  return mapping.findForward(fwdDetail);

Problem with validation rule

2006-07-14 Thread Sebastian Stein
Hi,

I have a form, which should also use validation based on a mask. I already
enabled this kind of validation in another form and there it works. So I
guess I just have a type or did something wrong during copypaste. Here is
the form definition in the struts-config.xml:

  form-bean name=menuForm
 type=org.contineo.forms.MenuForm
 form-property name=menuText
type=java.lang.String/
  /form-bean

...

  action input=/AddMenu.do
  name=menuForm
  path=/SaveMenu
  scope=request
  type=org.contineo.actions.admin.menu.SaveMenuAction
  validate=true
 forward name=addmenu
  path=/pages/addMenu.jsp
  redirect=false/
  /action

And here is the validation rule:

  form name=menuForm
 field property=menuText
depends=requireList,mask
var
   var-namecount/var-name
   var-value1/var-value
/var
var
   var-namefield0/var-name
   var-valuemenuGroup/var-value
/var
var
   var-namemask/var-name
   var-value^[a-zA-Z]*$/var-value
/var
msg name=menuForm.menuText
 key=errors.required
 resource=true/
msg name=mask
 key=errors.val.username
 resource=true/
 /field
  /form

Interestingly the requireList validation rule works. So if the user does not
select something in field0, the validation fails. However, the mask rule is
not applied. It seems the content of menuText is not checked against the
pattern.

Does anybody can spot the error? I'm using Struts 1.1.

Do you mean something like ActionRedirect?

 .addParameter(key, value);

It still won't allow you to redirect to a tile, though.

Hi,

I have a form, which should also use validation based on a mask. I already
enabled this kind of validation in another form and there it works. So I
guess I just have a type or did something wrong during copypaste. Here is
the form definition in the struts-config.xml:

  form-bean name=menuForm
 type=org.contineo.forms.MenuForm
 form-property name=menuText
type=java.lang.String/
  /form-bean

...

  action input=/AddMenu.do
  name=menuForm
  path=/SaveMenu
  scope=request
  type=org.contineo.actions.admin.menu.SaveMenuAction
  validate=true
 forward name=addmenu
  path=/pages/addMenu.jsp
  redirect=false/
  /action

And here is the validation rule:

  form name=menuForm
 field property=menuText
depends=requireList,mask
var
   var-namecount/var-name
   var-value1/var-value
/var
var
   var-namefield0/var-name
   var-valuemenuGroup/var-value
/var
var
   var-namemask/var-name
   var-value^[a-zA-Z]*$/var-value
/var
msg name=menuForm.menuText
 key=errors.required
 resource=true/
msg name=mask
 key=errors.val.username
 resource=true/
 /field
  /form

Interestingly the requireList validation rule works. So if the user does not
select something in field0, the validation fails. However, the mask rule is
not applied. It seems the content of menuText is not checked against the
pattern.

Does anybody can spot the error? I'm using Struts 1.1.
